- The battle against Nappa and Vegeta is won but at the cost of Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu, and Piccolo's lives. Since Piccolo was linked to Kami and he was the creator of the Earth's Dragon Balls, their deaths mean the Dragon Balls are now useless. All seems lost until Popo reveals that Kami had came from a planet called Namek and they could have Dragon Balls of their own to use. Bulma fixes up a ship and Gohan, Krillin and she head off to the planet while Goku waits to heal so he can follow after them later. However when the trio arrive on the planet, they find it's under siege by a tyrannical overlord named Frieza who likewise is after the Dragon Balls. Complicating matters is that Vegeta, having recovered from his defeat on Earth, is also after the Dragon Balls. In this episode, Dodoria gives a Vegeta the history of what happened to the Saiyan planet right before Vegeta absolutely WASTES him. Following Dodoria's defeat, Vegeta runs into none other than Zarbon and seemingly has the upper hand, till Zarbon pulls a trick from his sleeve that threatens to turn the tide of battle dramatically...

Namek Saga was straight action packed. Before Goku and Vegeta were technically the Goats of Dragonball this was when everybody had a shot at coming out on top and nothing was already decided like we see now in Super. From Zenkai Boosts to there potential getting unlocked. This was when we got a glimpse of Gohan's future in that department.💪💯

I think there was only one time one of those energy volley/barrage attacks ever did anything, and it wasn’t even done by Vegeta. It was done by Turles to Goku, and the only reason it hit was cause Turles was steppin’ on man’s back and popped that shit off point blank like a machine gun.

Gohan also blasted the bejesus out of 2nd form Freeza after thinking that Kuririn died with an energy volley/barrage. Oh and THEN after Kuririn was res'd by Dende, he does a Kai-en-zai barrage that cuts 2nd form Freeza's tail off.
The barrage isn't useless at all. It's meant to intimidate and if it is done right, it works very well. Vegeta did it against Kuririn to keep him and Bluma from getting away. Worked perfectly as neither went anywhere.
The energy blast barrage move also worked against Future Gohan during his last fight with the androids, but to be fair he was missing an arm and was already down on the ground.
And in Lord slug when his henchmen did it to piccolo and gohan

I loved this part of the series on Namik. Vegeta was going around surviving and being sneaky and tactical. He barely survived some fights and had to re group and you saw him gain more strength..Same with Gohan and Krilin. They had to sneak around and just barely survived and did some really clever stuff to get by. I like I wish the later shows did that. Cell saga did good when #16 and 18 hid on the islands to avoid Cell and everyone was keeping him away from #18. I like that kind of thing. It's not just train to power up and win but it's being clever and just barely surviving.

Seeing them have to use tactics and outwit the opponent rather than it coming down to a match of who can punch harder creates way more interesting story segments. The overpowered beatdowns are cool too, but nothing wrong with a little balance

The Frieza saga is just so damn good. Vegeta doing splinter cell tactics, all the changing alliances, desperate measures, gorilla tactics, stealth. It was so creative. So many interesting stories going on. I also love how side characters got to do something and contribute. They had to think and plan, not just train and fight, but of course that's there too, its DBZ after all. I really enjoyed the Cell saga and even the Buu saga, but man I still think Frieza saga had me engaged the most. I just remember so much excitement to see the crazy thing that happens next as a kid. Don't remember that excitement at the same level for the other sagas, though they are still good.
You nailed it. The Frieza saga was the pinnacle of DBZ. This saga cemented this show as possibly the greatest anime of all time. Everything about it was incredible.

I got a theory that Vegeta threw the fight against Zarbon instead of giving it everything. He knew that Freeza had the other dragon balls so he probably thought that Zarbon would take him to Freeza's ship after taking that L if he played dead.
And even transformed Zarbon was pretty close to Vegeta when it came to power levels. Transformed Zarbon was at about 25k while Vegeta was at 24k. Could have been a closer fight.

Back in the day, I still liked the Cell Saga... still enjoy Gohan at the end. But, now that I'm looking back through a more mature lense, the Frieza saga had it all.
