  • Thanks for watching. This is just a quick visual assessment of the difference between a professional Snap On Socket and a DIY Icon socket
For those that know, a quick visual look shows the difference even before using them in a real world application

As a career mechanic I’ve never regretted buying any of their hand tools. I’ve proven them to be superior many times over. My snap on rep is also the only rep that’s reliable. Everything is paid off and he still comes every week and warranties anything no questions asked. The guys I work with are always asking to borrow my tools when their cheap stuff won’t cut it.

I have snap on sockets and they were great when I worked on newer cars at the dealership, when I moved to an independent shop where vehicles are older and rust is a bigger issue, the tightness of their tolerance makes them a pain as all the bolts stick in the sockets when removed, meaning at each fastener removal you have the pull and yank to get the fastener out of the socket…,looser is sometimes just right dependent on what you work on

The real comparison is between Williams, Wright, Proto, Hazet, Koken, etc. Snap On has great quality. But so does a lot of other companies selling the same thing at much cheaper prices. But, as long as people buy Snap On no matter how expensive, they will also be the most expensive.

I have the 3/8 Icon shallow, semi and deep sae/mm chrome, work in heavy equipment had the shallow and deep since late 2018 never ever had a problem, lost the shallow 18mm and ordered a new one. Any time I think I lost a tool, usually a socket, I can spend up to an hour trying to find it because the time spent looking for it is still cheaper than buying another. Generally its stuck to the bottom of a magnet tray. Time well spent because now my cart and bench are finally clean.

For tools I use daily, SO has been well worth the money. I bought most of mine in the 90s and they were less expensive. I also bought a KRL1001 in 1999 and then a side box. That has tripled in price but mine still looks and operates as new, no regrets. Today I am not sure I would but back then SO was so far ahead in toolbox technology that it was a no brainer.

I only have two sets of snap on sockets but they are my most used sockets. I got 3/8 metric semi deep chrome and impact as a buy one get one deal a while back. I absolutely love them both and they do fit the ratchet and bolts much better than cheaper brands. For all my other sockets I have a mix of icon, kobalt, gearwrench, sunex, and craftsman. I can’t justify snap on price for all my sockets even as a professional.

@twinturbo3470 I owned a Snapon franchise for 35 years. Retired in 2021. I don’t remember any complaints about quality of Snapon’s hand tools or tool boxes. Concerning the price- what you pay for is not only quality, but engineering/research/development. Many of snapon’s competitors don’t have these expenses. They copy Snapon or someone else. Snapon is an innovator. Another thing you get from a dependable mobile tool dealer is service. If you are not getting dependable weekly service you need to have a heart to heart talk with your Snapon man. Quality and dependable service are priceless. And another thought- if your Snapon guy spends 40 hours per week actually interacting with customers, he has to collect $6.25/ minute every single minute just to stay afloat and in business. They don’t give him the truck and the inventory. He has to pay for it. That’s $15,000 per week every week. So if your Snapon guy is honest, dependable, and gives good service, patronize his business. Just some random ramblings from an old tool guy.

I realized I had barely any standard sockets so I found that I could get every deep, shallow, semi deep and low profile 6 and 12 point for $400. That was the route I went. I used to only use metric other than at work so I collected all those in metric sizes over the years. I felt comfortable with the gear wrench. I found them to be as good as the snap on and better than craftsman at work for the last decade as a technician

I have several of their 6pt industrial 3/8 drive SAE sockets I bought after using a couple at work. I mistook them for impact sockets while testing some stuff at work and didn’t realize they weren’t impact sockets (black oxide finish) until I started really looking at them and realized they were marked non-impact and actually really nice sockets and very well made. I also bought a 11” ish 3/8 quick release ratchet as it’s my favorite length but no one else made a version that inspired much confidence in their strength. Plenty of non QR version like the 90t Gearwrench, just damn few QR versions. And the craftsman overdrive is absolutely awful. Seems like it’s styling was mildly inspired by capt caveman’s club.

Buying singles a must for me, being able to maintain a complete set of matching sockets for decades because you will lose them. I could care less about a sockets lifetime warranty, way more sockets get lost than sockets break, so the warranty is useless. Snap On is expensive, but Sunex, Gearwrench, and Grey's Pneumatics are all fantastic sockets and they sell singles as well. Price affordable and stand up to shop use.

The problem with Snap-On isn't just the price, it's also availability - lots of non-pro tool users don't have access to tool trucks or don't want to open a tool truck account, you can't find Snap-On in retail stores, and their website (at least here in the UK) is a joke - everything you look at is out of stock and on back order. That being said, I have put together full sets of 1/4" and 3/8" Snap-On chrome sockets in standard, semi-deep and deep just by buying off eBay, some new and some used, so it can be done at a reasonable price with a bit of patience.

What I'm complaining about is that Snap-On only seem interested in catering to pro users who are going to be buying lots of stuff all the time, and they aren't doing themselves a favour by restricting access to their products that way. There are a lot of semi-pro or serious DIY type tool users like me who would like to buy more Snap-On, but aren't interested in going through the tool truck route, so we end up buying on eBay or similar. Nobody pays list prices for the more expensive Snap-on tool boxes. You work your way up to a larger box by trading a harbor freight Craftsman or older Snap-on box in on a modest bottom box and he gives you what you paid for the box trade-in.
Later you want a large Epiq type box and after you paid off that one you get an Epiq with trade in and up to $4000 rebate and maybe a discount.
Rarely does anybody just order an entire $30k+ set of tool boxes. For example I just traded in my old Solus scanner for Zeus+ and got almost $2000 for the Solus which was a demo when I bought it plus a big rebate which made the brand new Zeus+ $8800 with tax. Significant lower than the list price.
You’re not gone pay those website or list prices off the truck for more expensive items.
Now interest, it is what it is. You know how that works. Why one guy said the old Zeus cost him 16 grand. That’s credit and interest not the actual price.

Your play on the sockets on the rachet looked the same to me ....looked like your anvil has normal wear on it. Also put the socket on where the ball detent it...socket will be 100% tighter on the rachet with no slopI
I sold all my snap on tools. Due to being over priced n idiots on youtube ( not you lol) praising snap on like its jesus christ or something n knocking everything else. I use old craftsman. Husky gearwrench etc no problems. My boxes are us general from harbor frieght. No issues. You dont need $100,000 worth of tools when you can get the same stuff for $25k. I have tools from hf over 20 years old with no issues

Try to sell that ICON…. Nobody will want it. There isn’t a resale market PERIOD! Snap on holds its value and lasts.
