6:34 Fucking Goku, Buster Bunny, Mario, and Raphael all appeared together, in white tuxedos, _singing_ in a commercial? How in the name of hell did I not know about this before?
Even more strange when taking a closer look to seeing the SD Gundam, Raphael, Ryu, and what practically looks like a bootleg version of fox as well in that mix.
The Super Nintendo was developed in response to the PC Engine. By the time the Genesis came out, development on the Super Nintendo had already started.
It's sad to see how badly Earthbound did in NA. If things were different and it did sell well I wonder how things would have turned out. Maybe we would have gotten Mother 3 localized.
50in. screen, money green, leather sofa, got 2 rides, a limousine with a chauffeur. Phone bill about 2 G's flat, no need to worry my accountant handles that. And my home crew is lounging, celebrating every day no more public housing.
This is perhaps the first DYKG where the crew was outright *wrong* in their claims. -The Super Famicom was *not* made in response to the Genesis. Sonic didn't even come out until the Super Famicom already had a set release date. The Super Famicom was announced in December of '88 when the Mega Drive had just come out. Sega was a none-entity compared to NEC. -The Super Famicom did *not* have a backward compatability port at any point. Chris Covell's website, where that picture is from, explains this. The connection port was a wired power adapter for the AV Famicom. Really bad research this time, guys.
I thought it was wrong. Considering Sonic didn't come out until 1991, and Super Mario world was released in 1990 (Japan) and 1991 for NA, it would be too short a time period to develop a whole new console in response to sega and sonic,
ShadowVincent3 Ah yes, I forgot Sonic was '91. Super Famicom came out Nov '90 and had been announced since Dec '88. I read one paper that indicated Nintendo had been planning an upgrade as early as '87, so that was undoubtedly in response to NEC.
Miguel B DYKG is sloppy a lot of the time, not to mention being intent on repeating prior trivia for no reason. Like I said, this is the first time I've ever seen something which was just completely wrong and needed to be said as such.
Been a lifelong gamer of 26 years and it has never *once* occurred to me to put anything containing liquid on top of a console/PC I mean wtf seriously.
Well, I can see it today, since TVs have basically merged with monitors, and a lot of people have messy desks without any room to put a snack or drink. As long as it's not spilled, really hot, or really cold it shouldn't cause a problem as long as the system is off and preferably unplugged. But back then? I have to wonder where someone would even put the system so that it's a logical place to set anything but another console.
IDK, I'd say it is definitely somewhat goofy-- if anything quirky. The game doesn't take itself seriously at all, and it boasts some bizzare music and strange text/characters. Not 'light-hearted' per say though.
I remember the advertisments for Earthbound and to be honest, I had those scratch and sniff stickers and read the adds, even the game capture screen of "I just farted - sorry". that made me beg my mother to buy the game for me and she did. But being the odd boy that I was, I was - and still am - not a majority person and so even as the adds catered towards me, I guess the mainstream are just too 'stuffy to get such humor. Oh well. I still got the game and I love it and know it's worth a fortune now xD
Totally this. Loved the scratch n sniffs. Except, i could only rent games during those times, sadly. But at least i got to enjoy it during my childhood.
I remember those ads for EarthBound in an issue of Nintendo Power. I thought the scratch and sniff cards were awesome as a kid, it honestly made me want the game lol. (And I did get it, and still have it to this day.)
Yeah, at the time I couldn't afford new games very often, and I was fairly new to RPGs so renting them was a bit daunting, and the overt smells along with the slightly dark tone to certain sections made it rather intimidating to younger me...but that just made me want to beat them even more!
The thing is, if Nintendo didn't have a strict quality control standard and high licensing fees, we probably would of got shovelware games like "Imagine Babiez" and "Babysitting Party" on the SNES.
That was my first hope after hearing about the mini NES. I also hope there's eventually different editions of the mini NES, with different games in each one.
+Ryuujin1078 To be honest,it should stop right there.Until the next gen consoles become mind blowingly amazing, the n64 should stop it there.I mean,n64 was basically the first 3D console so yeah we should be good.Without the games slot, the game cube has many different sports games and variations like madden or madden street.
I'd be on board with that if they could play actual SNES carts. That's the only reason I'm not picking up a mini-NES; otherwise, it would be an instant buy for me.
that has got to be the most amazing intro to an DYKG Episode I've ever heard. TMNT IV resonates beautiful sounds of a gaming generation. I jammed hard feelsgood
In the case of Earthbound doing poorly in the U.S., I think Roo from 16-bit gems made two great points (which btw, give his channel some love. He made great content): -1. RPG’s weren’t mainstream popular in American culture at that time. Even big hits like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger didn’t sell a million units or even half a million units (Chrono Trigger only sold 260k units outside Japan at the time). Final fantasy VII and Pokémon were still a few years away from breaking open the mainstream. - 2. Earthbound costed like almost $60-$70 at that time because of the strategy guide that came with it. I’m not saying the strategy guide thing is bad considering it was made beautifully and probably did help explain the game better, but it did bump up the cost of the game compared to other games at the time. Why spend so much money on something that you may or may not even like?
Probably the same type of morons who fall off cliffs playing Pokemon Go, or throw a Wiimote through their tv cause they dont know what a wrist strap is for. Its kinda sad how idiot proof products have to be sometimes.
all the time when I was a kid. My nintendo was on the carpet with me sitting on the ground or something, and my little TV sat on an empty plastic milk crate, in the corner of the room.
I totally remember seeing the US commercial for "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" when I was a kid; It was incredibly gross yet hilarious...and I loved it! XD
1:08 it was not "improper" it was just a side effect of the chemical to fall out of the composition when UV/sun light hits the plastic. You have that in all white/gray plastic products which used the chemical back then.
Without a doubt. It has so many games that stand the test of time. I've played a ton of games on it (or ports or remakes) that would belong in a top 50 list and am still interested in more games I haven't played yet. I know that nostalgia isn't a factor because I played a lot of the Square Enix games for the first time later on as GBA or DS ports. Hell, there are even Super Famicom only treasures like the Fire Emblem games that outshine the 3DS ones.
I actually wished they would've kept the original design of the Super Famicom here in North America. I really like all the bright and fun colors. The SNES to this day is my favorite Nintendo console of all time. perhaps my favorite console, ever.
The Super Nintendo was and still is an amazing console. It was always my favorite console, so I still play it, and I still add new equipment to my collection.
Nintendo's Mascot is a Plumber. Sega Saturn's Mascot is a Badass Judo Master who punches a Giant Sega Genesis Controller in the Mountains and beats the shit outta you if you dont play Sega Saturn. Who can top that?
+Mercynical I heard even though the saturn didn't have as much awesome 3d games as the PlayStation, it had MANY great 2d games, including BETTER versions of games that were made for the PlayStation like SOTN. In terms of mascots though, Segata Sanshiro is MILES better than Sonic, the advertising alone made the Saturn outsell the N64 in Japan. Shoulda moved him over to the west instead of milking Sonic's corpse dry. At least Segata is immortal. Wish the Saturn did better here in the west as well.
its very common on older plastics.. my ps1 also has the discolor. 8-bit guy made a video showing how to remove it. iirc he put the plastic in a bag with hydrogen peroxide and closed it, then placed it in the sun for a few hours
6:35 A mini Gundam, the fox from Fantastic Mr. Fox, Ryu, Chun Li, Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, Goku, Krillin, the rabbit from Tiny Toons, Chrono, Raphael, and Gohan? doing a commercial for the SNES in South Korea. Wow.
It's crazy how these old game systems had the potential to go online. I didn't know the SNES could do that. So here I am almost 30 and never seen this video. So glad I've seen it
1:20 So it wasn't just mine that had that issue? Interesting. Still waiting for that tales DYKG episode. Last time ProJared was in an episode in the Chrono Trigger episode there was a "vote" between Tales and Bravely default for a future DYKG episode and we still haven't gotten an episode on either of them 8 months later....
+VMUboy 50Hz really isn't that bad or noticeable. It's the fact the games were almost never optimized for it. Resolutions can be higher on Pal, but no games ever used it :(
I loved the pizza scratch and sniff on one of the Earthbound ads. I can't find it anymore since all of my old video game magazines are piled up in my closet and I can't be assed to go through them.
NES and SNES are both such worth while and wonderful systems...sadly,I lost my SNES last Christmas....I tried to turn it on but it was broken....sad Holidays for me that year.
2:45 It's amazing to see screenshots from Ocarina of Time on there. Strangely backwards, and descriptive of that time. Man, looking at this feels like looking at the old internet from around then. Weirdly nostalgic!
6:35 so we have Mario and friends hanging out with Tiny Toons, Chun Li, and Z fighters. WHERE CAN I FIND THIS ANOMALY OF ANIMATION?! that banking add-on was interesting
6:34 I would have never guessed that goku, krillin, raphael, that one tiny toons character (forgot the name), yoshi, and everyone else to be in one commercial.
i dont understand. Super Nintendo was released in 1990. Sonic was released in 1991... how can Nintendo look at Sonic's sales and come to the conclusion that it wouldn't need to make a new console if Super NES came out before Sonic did?
Hell if I know. Given typical console development cycles, the Super Famicom was in the works even before the launch of the Genesis, and well before Sonic.
"Nintendo executives were in no rush to design a new system, but they reconsidered when they began to see their dominance in the market slipping." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Nintendo_Entertainment_System EDIT: I'm not pushing this as a fact, just saying they might have got their information from the wiki.
6:34 Fucking Goku, Buster Bunny, Mario, and Raphael all appeared together, in white tuxedos, _singing_ in a commercial? How in the name of hell did I not know about this before?
I must know the source!
Because the commercial is in South Korea dumbass.
Probably a generic ad for the SNES in Korea.(Oops, my bad i mean "Super Comboy.")
+nuk3townusa stfu boi
Even more strange when taking a closer look to seeing the SD Gundam, Raphael, Ryu, and what practically looks like a bootleg version of fox as well in that mix.
Why the fuck would anyone put a cereal bowl on top of an NES
because people are lazy and don't want to get a stool
It was the eighties. Anything could happen.
Hey, nice profile pic Trollzor ;3
That's what the serial port is for!
I was just about to say the same thing
The Super Nintendo was developed in response to the PC Engine. By the time the Genesis came out, development on the Super Nintendo had already started.
Also: Sonic the Hedgehog was released one year after both Super Mario World and the SNES
Ok cool i love both but I’m from europe so yea I know the genies as the mega drive
6:35
It's sad to see how badly Earthbound did in NA. If things were different and it did sell well I wonder how things would have turned out. Maybe we would have gotten Mother 3 localized.
Yeah, most likely! Hopefully one day we get Mother 3! We need finally get Mother 1 on Switch, so who knows?
It's sold amazingly now. If only they did a better job marketing it back then.
Did anyone noticed that goku and krillin are in the background
Fucking roleplayers
go home goku, you're drunk.
goku super saiyan, picture is normal goku =\
+Remuko dude right I was thinking the same thing. I saw his pic and was like o_O O_o -__-
+Remuko cause I didn't find any picture of my super saiyan form
Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis
When I was dead broke, man I couldn't picture this
Going going back to back Cali Cali
50 inch screen, money green leather sofa

SNES turns 25 this year.
Happy birthday SNES!
Huh. Sonic the Hedgehog also turned 25 this year. What a coincidence.
Sonic Mania!!!!!
Black Shiro It might just be.
kelyaum That's the Sega Genesis console. Sonic The Hedgehog was made 2 years later in 1991.

Not to mention NES can fuck up with the slightest touch/bump.
Just setting something on it could mess it up, let alone spilling anything.
Very interesting episode! Also the Super Famicom and PAL design of the console looks soo much better than the NA version.
So glad the Gamecube did not have motion controls. It was a fantastic system.
“The goofy, light hearted mood of Earthbound.”
...You’ve never played Earthbound have you?
IDK, I'd say it is definitely somewhat goofy-- if anything quirky. The game doesn't take itself seriously at all, and it boasts some bizzare music and strange text/characters. Not 'light-hearted' per say though.
You’ve never watched ProJared, have you? He’s just reading DYKG’s script.
The real question is, have YOU played Earthbound? It's dark but it's also quirky at the same time
I remember the advertisments for Earthbound and to be honest, I had those scratch and sniff stickers and read the adds, even the game capture screen of "I just farted - sorry". that made me beg my mother to buy the game for me and she did. +John DiLoreto. Not even close.
***** Which is nothing

Nintendoin' what Genisain't!
Big Apple, 3 A.M.
That's what you go with as the intro tune(Not the title card but before/during Jared talking)? For the SNES. I'm impressed and glad.
The thing is, if Nintendo didn't have a strict quality control standard and high licensing fees, we probably would of got shovelware games like "Imagine Babiez" and "Babysitting Party" on the SNES.
(4 Years Later) Or the current state of the Switch store
With Sonic 2017 coming up I'm expecting a new sonic episode
Probably in 2017
And the Lego dimensions pack
Sonic will never be a huge hit again... it was only top notch on SEGA
Dude don't forget Sonic Mania.
+Tom Nub During the GameCube era, until Sonic Heroes/Shadow the edgehog (intentional), they put up really good games, like the advance series
"nintendo of america did not want the super nintendo to look like a toy"
*paints the buttons fucking purple*
But purples the colour of royalty
Back in the day, purple was sort of associated with electronics like computers.
Timothy Vreeland Those were present too, but definitely purple. I remember some purple on keyboards and such
... your point, OP?
Really glad that we got the japanese design in europe!
Super Nintendo had the best Rpgs ever. Current gen consoles need to take notes.
Hey it’s back
6:34 Buster Bunny, Goku, Krillin, Raphael, Ryu, Chun-Li and Mobile Suit Gundam?! Damn! South Korea had the best ads in the early 90s.
Anyone else hoping they release a mini-SNES after the mini-NES?
And a mini N64...
That was my first hope after hearing about the mini NES. I also hope there's eventually different editions of the mini NES, with different games in each one.

Between Super Nintendo and Genesis I'm with the SNES
same loved super metroid
SNES had some AAA titles, but overall, there are LOADS more GEN games I like to play this this day while many AAA titles on SNES actually bore me now.
I could tell from your profile picture 8)
Me too. My favorite console of all time.
Why not both?
In the case of Earthbound doing poorly in the U.S., I think Roo from 16-bit gems made two great points (which btw, give his channel some love. He made great content):

And now Nintendo and Sega are best friends XD
Yes, I remember Carmen San Diego. I used to play it all the time at the public library in Davenport, Iowa.
Who the fuck would put a bowl of cereal on top of a nes?!?!
People probably put the NES on a table closer to them and perhaps they were eating and put it on the NES
Do neither of you remember the days of sitting on the floor 4 feet from the TV to play your video games?
Probably the same type of morons who fall off cliffs playing Pokemon Go, or throw a Wiimote through their tv cause they dont know what a wrist strap is for. Its kinda sad how idiot proof products have to be sometimes.
all the time when I was a kid. My nintendo was on the carpet with me sitting on the ground or something, and my little TV sat on an empty plastic milk crate, in the corner of the room.
its a good coaster. since it doesnt work half the time anyways.
6:34 can we appreciate this picture for a moment? Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Goku, Krillin, Fox, Ryu and Chun-li in an official Nintendo ad
6:35 Goku and Krillin?
+Kagereneko 90's childhood all in one commercial.
+Kagereneko Thats how my dad was, he always tells me about his childhood. And though im young, I have a huge respect for 90's.
and ryu, ninja turtle, bugs bunny, shredder? and some kind of teenager bowser
also the main character of dragon quest 5.
Imagine if we had that in america
6:35 Why are Goku and Krillin in the commercial?
Because the SNES had somewhere between 3 to 5 DBZ games that never made it outside Japan/Asia.
Fighting games Boutoden 1-3, Hyper Dimension, and some other quest type games I can't remember the name of off hand. Way more than 5.
There's also Tiny Toons and Ninja Turtles. Who ever knew there was a DBZ/Nintendo/TMNT/Tiny Toons crossover commercial out there.
Who else agrees that the SNES is the greatest console ever?
Damn, even the crickets agrees !
Without a doubt. It has so many games that stand the test of time. I do
Hell yeah Sega can't outshine Nintendo, since Sega is making too many broken Sonic games *cough cough* Sonic '06 *cough cough* Rise of Lyric
But Yeah SNES is the best *Cough cough* Chrono Trigger * cough cough* select titles *cough cough*
Fantastic video! Great job ProJared!!! The SNES is still my favorite console of all time.
I hate youtube music ads
Nintendo at their very best, they were top dog from the NES to SNES and ever since have had intermitten successes but always innovate
Why am I seeing Goku right next to Mario
cuz korea dont give a fuck
More importantly, why am I seeing both of them and Buster from Tiny Toons in the same commercial?
+Cyberbrickmaster1986 and Bowser with krillen and peach
And krillin is taller
There is also a Gundam there.
I actually wished they would've kept the original design of the Super Famicom here in North America. I really like all the bright and fun colors. The SNES to this day is my favorite Nintendo console of all time. perhaps my favorite console, ever.
The more I get to know about the details of Nintendo history the more I realize is that Nintendo's biggest enemy is Nintendo
Not a fanboy but that's more of sega of American japan thing
@@somethingsomething9008 Yeah that's clear by the one still making consoles and the other not. Sega caused its own downfall
0:05 The nostalgia has hit me like an incoming truck
They forgot the genesis version mortal kombat had no blood in it whatsoever without the hand code.
Favorite game system/console of all-time.
Could you PLEASE do a Did You Know Gaming video on the Sly Cooper series?!
That's just Sega Saturn's mascot.
Nintendo apparently
Mercynical Not really. What really sucked is how American division handled itself, due to their head being an idiot.
+Mercynical I heard even though the saturn didn't have as much awesome 3d games as the PlayStation, it had MANY great 2d games, including BETTER versions of games that were made for the PlayStation like SOTN. After the slew of rehashed facts in your _Mario Kart_ video, the presence of only one reused trivia point in this one is *very* refreshing.
Mario Characters with Dragon Ball (and Tiny Toons too) one? What the heck? Is this video maybe on youtube?
*Video is all about SNES
*BG music is from Earthbound
that yellow discoloration makes the snes look p uggo on an otherwise beautiful system
its very common on older plastics.. my ps1 also has the discolor. 8-bit guy made a video showing how to remove it. iirc he put the plastic in a bag with hydrogen peroxide and closed it, then placed it in the sun for a few hours
Holy crap, that satellite and online connection software info for back then was something else. This was a great video
Still the best console known by humankind
*cough* N64 *cough*
*cough*atari jaguar*cough*
Try the PS2. *Ding*
yep
***** I know right? That console brought an era of so many ground-breaking titles and fantastic new ideas that made your head spin!
Wow.
Too bad Earthbound sold poorly. It's a gem of a game.
Despite this being my favorite system ever, I was oblivious to just about all of the behind the scenes stuff. This was interesting indeed!
Wtf, was that Goku and Kurirun? What the hell are they doing there?😂😂😂
There were several dragonball games released on the SNES that never made it outside Japan
It's crazy how these old game systems had the potential to go online. I didn't know the SNES could do that. So here I am almost 30 and never seen this video. So glad I've seen it
*Sega*: Where did you put all the blood Nintendo?
*Nintendo*: Sorry, we dont put blood in _our games._
Meanwhile... In Kirby's Dreamland 3
Dude, the goddamn SNES allowed you to do your taxes WTF
Both the Mega Drive and SNES are equally awesome
I'm glad NOE weren't as stupid as NOA when it came the console design.
Don't forget NOA (Australia not America).
-insert brexit joke-
+AlvisTheGoodra NOE is in Germany lol
I'm glad we in the US had 60Hz. Can't imagine playing PAL region games. yuck! At that point who cares what the console looks like..
+VMUboy 50Hz really isn't that bad or noticeable. It's the fact the games were almost never optimized for it. Resolutions can be higher on Pal, but no games ever used it :(
WOOOO I'M PART OF A PROJARED VIDEO!!!!!
"Nintendo Quality standards were too high" Companies always trying to fuck you.
Love you too, ProJared. Y'know, sometimes I still regret selling my old SNES... those were good times.
Earthbound sold poorly in NA, is now one of the highest price SNES games ever. Good Job, NA
No wonder, Why there's so much European & Japanense Carts
Uh, that's how it works. The rarer something is, the more people will pay for it. And thus Nintendo could charge more on VC.
Im from 2019 we have the mini snes
From the future
Nvm wrong post
I loved the pizza scratch and sniff on one of the Earthbound ads. I can't find it anymore since all of my old video game magazines are piled up in my closet and I can't be assed to go through them.
do sega genesis next
They already did that
+Jixel Gamez O
but isnt there alrady an SNES episode already as well? or was that solely about the cartriges/mode7
+marsil602 It was Super FX, so basically the cartridges
+Toonie (Clyde) There's nothing stopping them from making a part 2
NES and SNES are both such worth while and wonderful systems...sadly,I lost my SNES last Christmas....I tried to turn it on but it was broken....sad Holidays for me that year.
yeah heres a fact for you. the super nintendo came alive when i was playing it and now its killed my mother and my parents. tragically beautiful
wait...what?
nice
What a twist!
"my mother and my parents"
oh yeah you wanna joke about it huh? you think this is some kind of funny business? my mother and my parents are dead ass hol
2:45
WHOA was the SNES colors that good?
Suprised you haven't done this, actually.
i don't know why but ive always loved the color scheme of the SNES, still my favorite console of all time.
And Europe apparently doesn't exist...But Korea does? What?
WTF is a Europe?
Is this "Europe" a country?
what is this. Europe thing?
Is mayonnaise a country?
No I think mayonnaise is a state.
2:45 It's amazing to see screenshots from Ocarina of Time on there. Strangely backwards, and descriptive of that time. Man, looking at this feels like looking at the old internet from around then. Weirdly nostalgic!
Blood or not, the SNES version of MK1 was superior in every way to the Genesis version.
I have a Super Famicom. The nostalgia is real, even though I don't know Japanese. But I still love playing it.
Congrats on 2 million subs!
6:35 so we have Mario and friends hanging out with Tiny Toons, Chun Li, and Z fighters. WHERE CAN I FIND THIS ANOMALY OF ANIMATION?!
that banking add-on was interesting
Did I just see Goku, Bugs Bunny and Mario all together in tuxedos singing?
No you didn't, that was Buster Bunny from Tiny Toon Adventures :P
That's not Bugs Bunny, that's Buster Bunny from Tiny Toons!
^^^^ This guy. Doesn't know his cartoons.
Congrats on 2M subs!!! :) Your videos are awesome and interesting
Do an episode for the PS Vita
Did you know? The Vita is dead
+I, the Nintendo fan still a great system
Eric Gutierrez Meh barely any exclusives on it interest me. Like pretty much all Sony and Microsoft consoles and handhelds.
How would they even get five minutes out of that one? Talk about how great Persona 4 is?
Doctor Eggnog Plus a it's a fucking PS2 game nothing exclusive about it. When the best game of your console is a remake, you have a problem.
The first fact just proves how vital competition is to good games being made.
i'm guessing the intro music is ninja turtles in time?
6:34 I would have never guessed that goku, krillin, raphael, that one tiny toons character (forgot the name), yoshi, and everyone else to be in one commercial.
sega kicked nintendos ass in the 90's, and I was there to enjoy it... good ole days
That was yesterday
3:08 Thanks, Cherdtranic
If you put tang or corn flakes on top of your nes then you have no right to complain i it breaks
That Korean Super Nintendo commercial surprised me, so many characters that I never thought I'd see together singing in white suits? Wow! Just wow!
Am I the only one who thinks the yellow discoloration looks better than the original color?
Tails the fox if you like it looking like it was pissed on
Jeff Dees Lol
I don't even like the colour yellow, and I actually agree.
If it gets to yellow the plastic becomes very fragile and may start to break
Last time I was this early, Sega was still a rival for Nintendo
Remember when F-Zero was relevant?
Pepperidge Farms remembers.
Every University should have it.
Damn I always wondered about the color turning yellow.
i dont understand.
+ThetaReactor so these guys are just making up facts now, apparently.
"Nintendo executives were in no rush to design a new system, but they reconsidered when they began to see their dominance in the market slipping." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Nintendo_Entertainment_System
EDIT: I'm not pushing this as a fact, just saying they might have got their information from the wiki.
What a wonderful time and love playing many of my snes favorites on my 3DSXL. I wish I would have found this video sooner!
