Deathbringer2206 umm no no, deal was made ,Bill Gates just proposed an idea to him and he turned it down. With Sony and Nintendo they had already made a deal but Nintendo backed out at the last minute.
Blackdare actually, what would have happened was Nintendo and Sony would be in a partnership to make a 6th gen console, so Microsoft would have had to partner with somebody else. the only other company even considerable would be Sega. Sega had finally gotten a grip on console hardware but after the Dreamcast their name was a curse. Under the Microsoft name a console made by them and Sega could have done well when you think about it. a few gens later, Sega would most likely dissolve into Microsoft' main dev team and Sony being in its current status would have most likely become the main hardware manufacturer and hardware dev team for Nintendo.

(ಠ_ಠ) No, it was a Magnavox Odyssey, where it played multiple games, but you needed TV covers for them to work. It's essentially like Nintendo's early Game & Watch, a portable device that featured the first D-Pad for gaming.
That murderer behind you who's about to slam your face in the keyboard. That's a very irrelevant analogy. Did Nintendo murder people or bring down whole cities. No. Both part of an analogy should be relevant.
Great idea "leave a comment about which console you want discussed." Do you not realize that this is how the pointless comment wars start. Cue playstation and xbox fanboys arguing, PC fanboys saying they're the best, and Nintendo fanboys being actually rather polite.
Mark Canas i argue with Nintendo fans all the time there fine until you tell them something they don't want to hear. Like the wii U game pad being garbage

Another strength the Xbox had was the ability to rip CD's to the console's hard drive to listen to in games, possibly helping it start off as a multimedia console, in my opinion.
mjxbox the first one was far better and much harder. The second one was a major improvement but way too easy. Blinx: the Time Sweeper will always be better.
Everyone can argue who's console is the best, but I'm just going to sit over here and play all of them, and not care about people's preference. And yes, I'm also talking about PC, I will play pretty much anything, because who cares which one is the best so long as you can have fun?
I still enjoy and play the Xbox to this day. I own 144 games for it and if it wasn't for the amazing library of PlayStation 2 games (I own about 150 titles), the Xbox would've been my preferred console. A few reasons why I enjoyed the console: - Certain Dreamcast games that were in development went over to the Xbox - SEGA titles (GunValkyrie, Shenmue II, JSRF, Panzer Dragoon Orta, OutRun 2, PSO) - Xbox Live was awesome and I miss that format, versus what it's like, now (weird, I know.) - Adding music to the hard drive and listening to them while playing games. - It was the most underrated console of that era, in my opinion.
Gaming Powerz Nice! ***** I guess it's more underrated, but I was mainly speaking in terms of the Xbox being new and everyone was more familiar with Nintendo.
I loved The Duke controller. When I was young, it was too big but I only appreciated it more as I grew up. With the Xbox versus PS is a great war that mostly leads gamers as the winners. Mostly because I think on how far the two had to focus on building games for the market to appreciate. I remember getting Metal Gear Substance for the added content.
Japan's culture seems very sensitive and nitpicky when it comes to media. Look at the way Nintendo handles TH-cam. They didn't make a story for smash bros wiiu just because people had put brawl's cut scenes on TH-cam. Their mentality personally aggravates me
David Jones I've heard they're *reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaalllly* conservative compared to us. That may have something to do with it. That and a complete culture clash.
GodzillaGamer101 They actually like American stuff. And they love Europe too. They just don't like then westerners try to dominate their businesses. Duh. Especially when said companies don't study Japanese culture in Advance and just do what they always do. You didn't hear that from me.
I never was a big fan of the xbox franchise, but I found the og xbox and can safely say it's such a great console! Has some cheap and fun games, has some neat features such as burning cds and you don't need to worry about memory cards! Pick it up and give it a try!
I still stand by my opinion that Microsoft and the Xbox perhaps contributed the least to the gaming world out of the big 4 console lines. SEGA and Nintendo essentially created home video gaming, Nintendo then continued along its path of uniqueness while Sony's PlayStation took the place of SEGA along the path of solid tradition, and at this point when Microsoft came into the game, there wasn't much to add at all. Microsoft's best effect was on the PC gaming industry, IMHO. Still, a valuable asset to the industry, especially considering they were at some point the most viable platform for western developers.
There wasn't too much to add in the past few gens, beside things that died out. Achievements have been a big influence, then turning the system to an entertainment hub(Netflix, apps) was also something new.
Atrolity Ah yeah, achievements are great (albeit ultimately useless) addition. Though I can't agree on the media-hub thing considering they did it to combat PlayStation's pre-existing attempts. Even said that in the video.
wee1owen12 They essentially kick-started the online-multiplayer revolution for consoles, you can claim that the PS2 technically did it first, but when you compare Xbox Live to the original Sony Online infrastructure its clear that Sony were eons behind MS, hell the PSN didn't reach the level of XBL until 2 or 3 years into the PS3's lifecycle. I'm not saying they've done more than Nintendo or Sony, but to say MS hasn't had a powerful impact on console gaming is nothing short of a lie.
jackpyro No no, that's not what a contribution is. They took that pre-existing idea and built upon it. That's like giving them the credit for analog sticks just because their version is better. That's not what we're talking about. And the actual magnitude of their impact is wholly irrelevant, the relative magnitude is what we're discussing here.
...the relative magnitude is that every console on the market now connects to the internet almost seamlessly, that's a trend that Microsoft started. If we're going to discount innovation because somebody used some version of it at some point in the past, then most of the big 3 can be considered footnotes in gaming history... Getting there first matters very little.
I think you forgot to mention that the original Xbox was the first ever HD capable console, outputting up to 1080i. However not all games we're capable of running at HD resolutions. I would also like to note that the original Xbox 'Duke' controller was so huge that it was recognised in the Guinness Book or World Records: Gamer's Edition 2008 for "Largest Mainstream Videogame Controller".
Despite hating the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One, I actually love the original Xbox. Maybe because it wasn't tainted with Squeakers, Micro-transactions, DRM and forced proprietaries, maybe because it had a theme of unbridled nuclear energy instead of "is a consul pley it plz", or maybe it's because Early 2000's Microsoft was less bullshit than Mid 2000's to Mid 2010's Microsoft.
The 64th Shadow I do like their original Xbox lineup and their X360 exclusive games from 2005-2010. Then they just stopped trying and just stuck with their core franchises, which is what they're doing today.
tbh the xbox one doesn't have much squeakers, unless you're playing gta5. in fact most people don't even talk anymore. and the xbox one isn't that bad as everyone makes it out to be
Sexy Little Shrimp Girl To be fair, some of those arguements over existent microtransactions, toxic communities, and holding to stuff you bought are reasonable arguments since they do exist.
So xbox wanted to make sure the console was built for gaming, and not so much other tasks, but yet they built the xbox one, with multitasking, and many other features, instead of putting gaming first
Atari started the book of gaming. E.T. threw it in the ocean. Nintendo fished it out and rewrote it. Sega stole the old copy and tried to dry out the pages, but ended up failing after a while. Nintendo asked Sony to look after the book, then took it back. Sony rewrote the book while it was in their possession. Sony didn't let Microsoft keep the book, so they wrote a new book. The 3 remaining companies are trying to figure out which book is the real one... ....but PC has them all on a flashdrive. PC Master Race~!! (lol, jk)
That is so hilariously fucked up that the prototype Xbox project was called "Midway", even if it was only known as that behind closed doors. That'd be like Nintendo or Sony naming a prototype project "Pearl Harbor"
haltopen12 Yeah, true. Joseph Fox I was thinking just that, especially when I heard about the color black meaning death bullshit that Japan tried to pull on Microsoft. "But isn't the Playstation 2 black?" lol One thing not mentioned in this video is that there were plans on the Xbox being backwards compatible with the Dreamcast but the plan fell apart as someone from SEGA who was trying to make the deal happen passed away. In a way, the Xbox almost ended up being a Dreamcast 2. However, some Dreamcast games were ported to the Xbox (Hydro Thunder, San Francisco Rush 2049, etc.).
haltopen12 Exactly. Xbox didn't invest into JRPGS (Save Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and a couple others) But the Japanese also already had a such a long holding to Nintendo and Playstation, that offers more variety of gaming to the Japanese liking but the "New system from another country? EW" is definately a factor even to this day.
***** Japan's console gaming market is at it's lowest point in almost 25 years. Everyone plays on their phones while commuting to work, university, etc.
Fuzzycat What part am I wrong about? It was Jet Set Radio Future in all territories. I cannot find anything about Jet GRIND Radio Future. The first game was called Jet Grind Radio in North America & Jet Set Radio elsewhere.
You want suggestions for future [console] videos? How about something on the Atari 2600? Also, how about something historical and do a DYKG on Pongn (there must be some interesting facts about the series?)
Alpha Unit Tom The Atari 2600 has been covered so many times by other sources, and its history is already so easy to find and incredibly well-known. I'm not sure it's needed.
The windows ce system for the Dreamcast was just used for game development over using the Sega software, it ended up not being used for the most part because of it being more glitchy
It doesn't end there. Microsoft developed DirectX to encourage western developers because at the time game development was dominated by Japan. What would be an appropriate name for a tool that'll be used to defeat Japan? *Project Manhattan.*
YA BOY G Just Jesus. I mean, the console war is still around today but of how Microsoft wishes to put forth such a fight just has me think about stuff gaming had over the years. Personally, I wondered how RE4 could have looked if it had released on the Xbox than the game cube. Not saying one is better, but of how the hardware was a slight edge for Xbox in the early years.
YA BOY G Now that Japanese developers got defeated the general quality of AAA games lowered, so, in retrospective maybe it wasn't such a smart move. P.S. today we need a *SEGA Kamikaze* or a *Project Pearl Harbour* to bring back the quality of games of old ☺
LogCa Games ??? You asume I play CoD which I don't. All Nintendo makes is the same games over and over Metroid Mario Pokemon and Zelda. I like them but it really is the same shit again and again and people always fall for it but then they call CoD out on it. Blind idiots.
***** the thing is he was saying in japan. X is in a lot of Japanese things. X is pronounced cross sometime in japan like in ProjectXZone (get it because it is a crossover game) or Kamen rider ZX (Zetcross, also a pun on X being 10 as he's the 10th kamen rider). X is sometimes silent like in HunterXHunter or Highschool DxD. X is pronounced X like in Megaman X. Maybe they wondered what happened to the other 9 boxes.
The symbol X in Japan represents "no," so the XBox to the eyes of a Japanese person would look like "NOPE-Box" which could easily be exploited by detractors and critics, which would lead to the death of the potential success of the XBox in Japan.
I still have my og Xbox. The other day I accidentally left it on for a week. When I turned on my TV to watch something, it started up to Spongebob in an infinite loop of dying on the final boss in the Spongebob Movie Game. Still works, too. They don’t make em like they used to, man.
Xeninja0 Not to be a dick to any 360 fans, but why do I see people saying "360 because I usually play ps3 and would like to see what the other side is like", and 360 people being like "360 cuz ps3 sucks"
Xeninja0 Ah,the 360 was fun.the controllers are comfy and dont feel a bit weird like xbox one controller and the features in 360 is definately better then xbox one though
atomic747 yeah i tried a 360 controller at my cousin's house once and it felt like HEAVEN. sadly there's not enough games i'm intrested in on the 360 and the ps3 controller works fine on the pc when u use a 360 emulator so i can't justify getting one D:
Ashton Clark You are not real retro gamer. You lose. Everybody knows Metal Slug. AVGN, Game Sack, I mean, even the modern arcade station in our country has Metal Slug X!
SaintAlia_of_the_Games If you come to Mexico and pronounce Metal Slug or King Of Fighters every fucking body knows those games. Don´t try to play again a cholo in KOF, they would like destroy you (specially in any magic plus).
The Japanese are pretty xenophobic, they don't appreciate outsiders no matter where they're from. Not saying they hate us, they just prefer domestic things more. But you see the exceptions like Hideo Kojima who loves American/Western movies.
Microsoft: Can manage a computer and video game empire worth billions, can't even create a fucking D-Pad that works for fighting games! >:c I WANT MUH MKX COMBOS TO WORK GODDAMMIT!
My inner tech nerd caught that bit where you showed the picture of a Xbox 360 board when you were describing the original xbox specs. Other than that small detail I really enjoyed this video.
It was but the Xbox was much more powerful than the other platforms so most multiplatform games run much better on Xbox even often compared to the PC ports.
I feel for the guy that went "What the fuck are you talking about with this black=death bullshit, the PS2 is black!" I mean, not only did Sony NEVER deviate from black systems as their main color scheme from the PS2 onward, even NINTENDO started getting on that! They were making first-party *black* GameCube controllers, they had alternate black Wiis eventually, and the Wii U? The at-launch version with more harddrive space IS BLACK. I mean, I know there's a general outsider disdain with some attitudes coming from Japan, but holy shit that was a massive double standard. Oh, and that "X=death" thing as well. Like wow, I'm sure that totally made Keiji Inafune scared to make MEGA MAN X, among other franchises doing something similar. Or coincidentally Xenoblade X!
The Xbox was a majority of my remembered childhood. I grew up with the n64, but that was when I was still fairly young. When the Xbox came out, I was old enough to fully remember the full experience, starting from getting it on Christmas bundled with Halo.
Why did you show pictures of the 360 internals when talking about the original XBOX? Can't trust a video like this when you can't even get the pictures/facts right.
TinyHippo Gaming No I feel like the PS3 was leagues better then the 360 but the Xbox one definitely seems to be a lot better then the PS4 at this point.
Why is everyone being a dick to each other? Like each consol has their good and bad points but they all level out at the same number. And to be honest - fuck making a game exclusive. I hate that so much. I transfered from Gameboy to 360 to PS3 to XBOX to Wii. And now I'm in the process of getting into PC gaming. And to be frank. I love them all in their own way.
-Darkprince- Yeah but if you like to collect old Systems and Games than Exclusiv titles are special ^^ and some little companys can't do much but exclusiv games. Look at the Ps2 libary its like 70% or so exclusiv... they probably didnt even know that there are other consoles.
PlayStation 3. A console that was barely above trash at the start of its generation and then 4 years later became the best of its generation easily. I didn't think Sony could turn it around but they did. Sadly, MS did everything right at the start but then refused to properly support the Xbox 360 by the time PS3 turned things around.
XBOX - Was very innovative at first, re shaped the gaming market and community as a whole. XBOX 360 - Perfected the controller, but still had a paid online service just to play online, save games, use Netflix and TH-cam, and faulty hardware(Red Ring of Death) XBOX One - Worse beginning of a system, let alone as the marketing and services were fucked up (Used games, DRM) and then just became the XBOX 360 Part 2, just with a dumbed down controller (for me anyway). Oh yeah, it also made Sony make online being paid too. Thanks for ruining a good console Microsoft. All well, I still have my PC. Oh wait.
without paid subscriptions we wouldn't have as many exclusive titles. Maybe not good for you and me, but for Sony and Microsoft (I think Microsoft is a joke about Gates penis lol) it lures more people into their system
@@rubyrovers506 Series X is not really anything to rave about since it also had a weak launch since their flagship game was Halo Infinite being delayed. Game looks good, but its late arrival impaired the console's release thus no one is really taking about it as much as the PS5.
Xbox has never been anything more than extra baggage on the gaming industry. It's essentially been a different version of Playstation without the good exclusives (except Halo, which was amazing back in 2001). Every platform had something unique to offer. Then Xbox stepped in and started offering the same thing as Playstation minus a few important titles. It divided fans and messed up the industry. Microsoft's idea for having a gaming console to replace PC gaming wasn't bad, but it was executed terribly. It lacks the important features of PC gaming while offering nothing unique. A PC gaming device for the living room is still a good idea since PC OS has a terrible GUI and hardware optimization for gaming and most PC gamers haven't yet made the transition away from the desk, small monitor, and wired peripheral inputs.
ゆい714 Imagine the audience, or even the direction games and gaming would have gone in if Xbox had done it right. I know instead of a PS3 I personally would have chosen differently. And in regardes to Halo being released in 2001; thanks for making me feel old =P
ゆい714 I mostly agree, but MS has still bankrolled some great games for its platform, and if not for them we'd be stuck with PS3 for last gen as the only HD console last gen. But on the other hand, if they hadn't step into the console fray we'd probably have gone far beyond what is possible in graphics right now(because they would have been more focused on DX and enhancing it) and we'd probably still have Ms' PC studios.
ゆい714 The XBox has been instrumental in shifting the game industry further towards the west, and its earlier years saw the birth of titles like KotOR that almost certainly wouldn't have gained any traction without a foot in the console market. I don't have anything against Japan, but it's important to feel like your culture has a place in the industry. Though I definitely prefer Playstation over XBox.
Dumb comment from the Microsoft guy, saying the rules didn't apply to both outsiders and insiders. Yes the PS2 was black, but it wasn't called "Death Box" either. Also, missing from this (although I could see why), Bill Gates once said PC's weren't meant for gaming. This was around either the launch of the Xbox, or at least on it's first anniversary. I think I read it in the PC Pro magazine here in the UK.
Michael Burke He somewhat had a point to be fair, you can take it both ways. I find it odd that the PS4 was still called the PS4 in Japan since the number 4 is seen as very unlucky over there to the point a lot of buildings and hospitals never have a 4th floor number in elevators, the word for the number 4 sounds very similar to the word for death.
Cal DW I see your point. I remember watching an explanation as to why the X on a PlayStation usually did the negative actions such as to cancel something. I think with a number it could be different as numerically it might not be bad luck, but to say it a loud may be the bad luck bringer.
Michael Burke It isn't just about saying it out allowed, they actually just call the 4th floor of a lot of buildings the 5th floor, when you go to select a floor in a elevator it just goes 1 2 3 5 V:
Michael Burke I thought they kinda explained that already...it was design choice, they chose circle for something positive because it usually means getting something correct and X well usually it meant getting something incorrect or wrong...something like that
Cal DW Well it seems that unlucky thing may be true. Then again I've seen people say PS4 is doing 'well' or 'ok' in Japan, which is laughable at best. But people's expectations of sales in Japan are so monumentally low so yeah.
Although I love the Xbox, in my opinion, of all of the major consoles during that time, the GameCube had the better exclusives, the PS2 had the better hardware, and the Xbox was in between.
+Lord Cthulhu ps3 was more stronger then the 360 it was just harder to develop for which is why uncharted 3 and last of us looks better then anything on xbox 360.
Fawthur Are you fucking stupid? The reason pirating rates are so high on PC is because it's so easy to do. It's not easy on a fucking box. And you must be looking at the child community of PC. Because all of my friends and I just buy our games and hang out. I still own all consoles and I have no problem with any of them.
So the reason that Play Station exists is because Nintendo went back on a deal with Sony... and the reason the XBox exists is because Sony wouldn't let Microsoft help with the PS2...
Well then... The origins of how current 'Console War.'

How do you think wars actually break out?
Works well for us though, any time there's competition the consumer wins.

Kieran Attrill True on both accounts.
Matthew Smith Competition fuels the marketplace, this is a good thing.
HOLD ON A SECOND so the Xbox was a direct challenge to Sony after a deal broke apart the same way the PlayStation was a direct challenge to Nintendo after a deal broke apart??
So basically, Sony are a bunch of stubborn a-holes?
So in other words if no one was stuck up then there would currently be Nintendo and pc?
Deathbringer2206 From what I understood there never was a deal between Sony and Microsoft, but Sony didn't accept the deal Microsoft offered. But of course, English isn't my native language and I'm really tired right now, so I could be wrong.

mjxbox the first one was far better and much harder. The second one was a major improvement but way too easy. Blinx: the Time Sweeper will always be better.

Dangit I did it again
Daniel Williams If 70 years is too soon, you can't talk shit about anything.
***** Thanks for the spam. My trash can was getting hungry.
***** yeah.. because "joking" about hundreds of thousands of people dying is TOTALLY okay, given any period of time.
Did You Know Gaming? - Ratchet & Clank
I second this
Yes
My favorite platformer series. Not the best, but my favorite.
what you meant to say was it was appropriately named Midway.
Sega should have called the Dreamcast "the kamikaze", or project Pearl Harbour.
I still enjoy and play the Xbox to this day. I own 144 games for it and if it wasn't for the amazing library of PlayStation 2 games (I own about 150 titles), the Xbox would've been my preferred console. A few reasons why I enjoyed the console:
- Certain Dreamcast games that were in development went over to the Xbox
- SEGA titles (GunValkyrie, Shenmue II, JSRF, Panzer Dragoon Orta, OutRun 2, PSO)
- Xbox Live was awesome and I miss that format, versus what it's like, now (weird, I know.)
- Adding music to the hard drive and listening to them while playing games.
- It was the most underrated console of that era, in my opinion.
***** I have a GameCube. I own only 42 games for it. I had some killer games, but I spent the least time playing it.
Matthew J. Boone I still play my old xbox.
Wtf this is an unpopular opinion
It's about time you did one for the Xbox :P
Ikr XD
Lol I'm saying tho
yee
...Midway? Jesus, Microsoft. You really took that Gates and Idei meeting with too much salt. Holy shit.
I got a "America hates Japan" kinda vibe while watching this video.
Also vice-versa
GodzillaGamer101 WW2
When I heard the metal arms theme.........
Hell yeah!
Is it wrong that I remember it from my gamecube?
i heard the burnout 3 theme
metal armsss
Yiss fammm sik game

The 64th Shadow x mark's the box!
I voted Xbox 360.
It's never a bad thing to learn more about the enemy.
Captain Olimar Get whatever info you can with those Pikmin.
Make sure they're not seen.
Captain Olimar Thats why i voted PS3, the opponent is clever.
Metal Arms, such a good game.
GSDAkatsuki ugh that avatar where did you get it
itseman2 rabbitbrush
GSDAkatsuki ooh ty
GSDAkatsuki Oh man I loved that game! I still have it along with my Xbox.
GSDAkatsuki So sad that sequel was planned, but never came out. ;_;
I think you forgot to mention that the original Xbox was the first ever HD capable console, outputting up to 1080i. However not all games we're capable of running at HD resolutions. I would also like to note that the original Xbox 'Duke' controller was so huge that it was recognised in the Guinness Book or World Records: Gamer's Edition 2008 for "Largest Mainstream Videogame Controller".
ps2 was also capable of outputting 1080i
The N64 controller I thought was bigger. Or was that not mentioned because it wasn't mainstream anymore by then
> Talks about how Xbox had a built in power supply
> Shows picture of Xbox 360 which had a massive brick of an external power supply
Despite hating the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One, I actually love the original Xbox. Maybe because it wasn't tainted with Squeakers, Micro-transactions, DRM and forced proprietaries, maybe because it had a theme of unbridled nuclear energy instead of "is a consul pley it plz", or maybe it's because Early 2000's Microsoft was less bullshit than Mid 2000's to Mid 2010's Microsoft.
The 64th Shadow I do like their original Xbox lineup and their X360 exclusive games from 2005-2010. Then they just stopped trying and just stuck with their core franchises, which is what they're doing today.
tbh the xbox one doesn't have much squeakers, unless you're playing gta5. in fact most people don't even talk anymore. and the xbox one isn't that bad as everyone makes it out to be
Sexy Little Shrimp Girl What?
Sexy Little Shrimp Girl How so?
Sexy Little Shrimp Girl
To be fair, some of those arguements over existent microtransactions, toxic communities, and holding to stuff you bought are reasonable arguments since they do exist.
So xbox wanted to make sure the console was built for gaming, and not so much other tasks, but yet they built the xbox one, with multitasking, and many other features, instead of putting gaming first
Smurfson Yeah, there's gonna be a change of mind in the timespan between 2001 and 2013...
Awesome that the Metal Arms theme is being played as background music love that game
When I saw blinx I got some good flash backs. They need to bring it back
+JustCallMeShwick
Dude. I've been trying to remember Blinx's name for years.
Thank You
I am going to buy it in a heartbeat.
X'D
ace-of-aces lol XD
ace-of-aces np
Blinx needs an HD remake with better textures.
Still my favorite game though
Atari started the book of gaming.
E.T. threw it in the ocean.
Nintendo fished it out and rewrote it.
Sega stole the old copy and tried to dry out the pages, but ended up failing after a while.
Nintendo asked Sony to look after the book, then took it back.
Sony rewrote the book while it was in their possession.
Sony didn't let Microsoft keep the book, so they wrote a new book. The 3 remaining companies are trying to figure out which book is the real one...
....but PC has them all on a flashdrive.
PC Master Race~!!
(lol, jk)
Lol
+Fiery Chaos lol nice
+Fiery Chaos I actually laughed out loud at the end. That was good.
Ouya couldn't figure out how to read it.
nice story
You should do a Xbox 360 Did you know gaming. That would be great. Anyways, keep up the good videos :)
Im still waiting on it...
+Poever I could make one
+TechNuggets95 Did you know? they stop making Xbox 360's? Don't forget to Press F to pay respects
That is so hilariously fucked up that the prototype Xbox project was called "Midway", even if it was only known as that behind closed doors. That'd be like Nintendo or Sony naming a prototype project "Pearl Harbor"
Ironically, the Xbox is still not doing well in Japan (better but not well). Some things just never change.
***** Japan has a very protectionist nature. its a political-economical perhaps even cultural choice.
***** Not surprising considering the biggest franchises on xbox, halo, gears of war and COD, are shooters, which are not popular in japan
haltopen12 Yeah, true.
Joseph Fox I was thinking just that, especially when I heard about the color black meaning death bullshit that Japan tried to pull on Microsoft. "But isn't the Playstation 2 black?" lol
One thing not mentioned in this video is that there were plans on the Xbox being backwards compatible with the Dreamcast but the plan fell apart as someone from SEGA who was trying to make the deal happen passed away.
Japan's not a big fan of PC gaming, huh?
So, if you're both a "PC master race" and an Otaku, do you explode?
seanmyster6 Yes multiple studies have been conducted all of them were positive... no one survived.
seanmyster6 replace otaku with japanese or weaby weaby weaboo

The Black King Simple... aliens.
Jet Grind Radio Future?!... Jet SET Radio Future. It was never Grind in any territory. That was the first game. Jet Grind/Set Radio.
***** And it was one of your favorite games and you said it right at the end lol.
***** lol
***** do your research, not feeling like correcting you
Fuzzycat What part am I wrong about? It was Jet Set Radio Future in all territories. I cannot find anything about Jet GRIND Radio Future. The first game was called Jet Grind Radio in North America & Jet Set Radio elsewhere.
Fuzzycat Unless the Japanese name translates to Jet Grind Radio Future?
Seeing the original controller for the Xbox brought back memories. That thing was so obese it felt like I was holding a brick instead of a controller.
I love Classic xbox my he dad was play this when he young age.
Spawn, Ninja Gaiden, Jet Set Radio Future and Fable... good memories.
im 12 and i was digging through the basement and found spawn ninja gaiden and jet set radio future XD i wish i grew up in the early 2000's
jet set radio future was my shit back then
Giovanny Granados i wish there was a third game
I think I saw Blinx: The Time Sweeper for a couple seconds as well. I have vague memories of renting that game.
You want suggestions for future [console] videos? How about something on the Atari 2600? Also, how about something historical and do a DYKG on Pongn (there must be some interesting facts about the series?)
I think an episode on the Atari 2600 would be neat.
Alpha Unit Tom No, they must do a video on my favorite console first, the Jaguar!
AT7outof10 Where did you learn to fly?
Alpha Unit Tom The Atari 2600 has been covered so many times by other sources, and its history is already so easy to find and incredibly well-known. I'm not sure it's needed.
Ecotom you not seen AVGN?
The windows ce system for the Dreamcast was just used for game development over using the Sega software, it ended up not being used for the most part because of it being more glitchy
Reading out loud on Wikipedia is FUN!

***** Finally someone remembers that game. So sad it didn't get a sequel.
Vajra at least Sierra gets our cries
Yeah a remake wouldn't hurt either
The reason they called it Midway was badass
It doesn't end there.
Microsoft developed DirectX to encourage western developers because at the time game development was dominated by Japan. What would be an appropriate name for a tool that'll be used to defeat Japan? *Project Manhattan.*
YA BOY G hot damn
YA BOY G Just Jesus. I mean, the console war is still around today but of how Microsoft wishes to put forth such a fight just has me think about stuff gaming had over the years.
Personally, I wondered how RE4 could have looked if it had released on the Xbox than the game cube. Not saying one is better, but of how the hardware was a slight edge for Xbox in the early years.
YA BOY G Now that Japanese developers got defeated the general quality of AAA games lowered, so, in retrospective maybe it wasn't such a smart move.
P.S. today we need a *SEGA Kamikaze* or a *Project Pearl Harbour* to bring back the quality of games of old ☺
Well... Pearl Harbor didn't end so well for the Japanese. They still don't have a standing army.
Love that Metal Arms: Glitch in the System music at the beginning of this video!
Seriously, where's the Xbox 360 vid?!
THE EVIL Mii yea
PS vs Xbox?
Screw you I'm staying Tendo
IMLR. Have fun playing the same game.
Goombalo10 K den. I hope black ops 3 is all brand new for you.
-Do I dare enter this?-
LogCa Games ??? You asume I play CoD which I don't. All Nintendo makes is the same games over and over Metroid Mario Pokemon and Zelda. I like them but it really is the same shit again and again and people always fall for it but then they call CoD out on it. Blind idiots.
Goombalo10 Lol COD IS the same thing, you're the idiot. Have fun buying that DLC
5:10 I clearly remember death not being X shaped (死=/= X) and white being the color of death in Japan. So he was possibly lied to or is lying.
*****
the thing is he was saying in japan. Maybe they wondered what happened to the other 9 boxes.
yeah the original scarface(1930s version or whenever) often used Xs like that. But who is that superstitious or would think about it.
The symbol X in Japan represents "no," so the XBox to the eyes of a Japanese person would look like "NOPE-Box" which could easily be exploited by detractors and critics, which would lead to the death of the potential success of the XBox in Japan.
X is No/Wrong/Mistake.
XboxOne is shortened to XOne in Japan or バツイチ (Batsu Ichi) which is also the term used to describe a divorcee.
IKMNification
It just gets worse and worse.
For anyone wondering what the music is from, it's from a game called Metal Arms: Glitch in the Syste
Imagine Resident Evil 4 with the full power of Xbox >_>
leftyfourguns That would be fricking awesome but ports dont use the full console power.
leftyfourguns nope xbox is shit lel o_O
MrZombiaR You play CoD so... you are invalid as a whole gamer.

leftyfourguns Fucking legit, For the og xbox it would've been reallyyy cool.
Playstation 3 plz
metal arms so many memories
I still have my og Xbox.
The other day I accidentally left it on for a week. When I turned on my TV to watch something, it started up to Spongebob in an infinite loop of dying on the final boss in the Spongebob Movie Game. Still works, too.
They don’t make em like they used to, man.
360 pls. Since I am a bit of a ps fanboy I never hear much about 360 and after watching this I'm pretty curious
Xeninja0 I respect that.
Xeninja0 Not to be a dick to any 360 fans, but why do I see people saying "360 because I usually play ps3 and would like to see what the other side is like", and 360 people being like "360 cuz ps3 sucks"
Jo Bones No matter what there is negativity in any fandom.
This is an obscure franchise but please do a video on metal slug
Ashton Clark Its obscure???
Ashton Clark lol
Ashton Clark You are not real retro gamer. You lose. Everybody knows Metal Slug. AVGN, Game Sack, I mean, even the modern arcade station in our country has Metal Slug X!
Pixelized Dreams Not the public at large though. Most don't even know what a Neo-Geo was. Ahh poor SNK. The sprite gods of old....
SaintAlia_of_the_Games If you come to Mexico and pronounce Metal Slug or King Of Fighters every fucking body knows those games.
Don´t try to play again a cholo in KOF, they would like destroy you (specially in any magic plus).
Man, the Japanese REALLY didn't appreciate Americans, did they? Now I wonder what they think of Europeans.
+LeireX Maybe some kind of friends ?
The Japanese are pretty xenophobic, they don't appreciate outsiders no matter where they're from. Not saying they hate us, they just prefer domestic things more. But you see the exceptions like Hideo Kojima who loves American/Western movies.
It depends which European nations. The Dutch and the Portuguese had an narrow trading during the Edo period.
+Halvdan Knutsson Colonialism...
+Halvdan Knutsson exactly, China and Korea, not USA and USA
3:49 - Never will a piece of Jet Set Radio Future music slip by my ear unnoticed.

I WANT MUH MKX COMBOS TO WORK GODDAMMIT!
...Xbox One has a great D-pad.
Spuffy Have you played a fighting game on it?
Use the stick
Nope.
Turd Soda FUCK. NO.
My inner tech nerd caught that bit where you showed the picture of a Xbox 360 board when you were describing the original xbox specs.
Other than that small detail I really enjoyed this video.
If the japanese guy hadn't refused Bill offer we wouldn't have that much console fighting as we do today. Shame on you Japan, shame on you.
Wait a minute, why is Burnout 3 music in here?? Wasn't that multi-platform?
Yes it was definitely.
It was but the Xbox was much more powerful than the other platforms so most multiplatform games run much better on Xbox even often compared to the PC ports.
What about the Wii?
no one cares sadly
+Noah Cosme But the Wii is the best selling console of the 7th generation of game consoles!
Nicholas Botelho best selling console ever i'm pretty sure m8
Bl Scott Second best. PS2 sold more.
It's 5th best. The PS2, Nintendo DS, Gameboy, and PS1 have sold more.
I got the duke controller and I LOVE the way it looks.

I don't why. It's like, the grammar or something
Echsbax! Echsbax!
I feel for the guy that went "What the fuck are you talking about with this black=death bullshit, the PS2 is black!"
I mean, not only did Sony NEVER deviate from black systems as their main color scheme from the PS2 onward, even NINTENDO started getting on that!
When the Xbox came out, I was old enough to fully remember the full experience, starting from getting it on Christmas bundled with Halo.
man i will never forgot playing halo Christmas morning
same here bro, I'll never forget the first time I played ssx tricky. man, the memories
***** yep
Why did you show pictures of the 360 internals when talking about the original XBOX? Can't trust a video like this when you can't even get the pictures/facts right.
+SNKega I was scratching my head at that too. I have 3 dismantled Xbox's behind me so I know too those aren't Original Xbox innards.
I wonder who told him that Black is the color of Death? that is so stupid
funny the console isn't actually black . shine a light on it and you'll see it's a very dark green
I am looking at my actual Xbox and can confirm it is black with some parts having a green tint.
Hah metal arms music at the beginning!
Xbox 360
Next videos, you can focus on PS3. I think it was under apreciated last generation
Well it wasn't a good as the 360. But the PS4 is better then the Xbox one
TinyHippo Gaming No I feel like the PS3 was leagues better then the 360 but the Xbox one definitely seems to be a lot better then the PS4 at this point.
***** really? I'm sincerely curious why?
TinyHippo Gaming Ps3 was and still is way better than the RROD 360
TinyHippo Gaming Gamecast is way better.
Do an episode on early (pre-2000) PC gaming! Then do one on 2000-2010 PC gaming up to where we are today with Steam, SteamOS/Linux, etc.
PlayStation 3. A console that was barely above trash at the start of its generation and then 4 years later became the best of its generation easily. I didn't think Sony could turn it around but they did. Sadly, MS did everything right at the start but then refused to properly support the Xbox 360 by the time PS3 turned things around.
xOmniCloudx i own both but still barely have a no more then 100 hours on PS3. IMO the games were average at best. (Talking about exclusives)

when you hear the metal gear glitch in the system theme playing at the start that game was amazing
Playstation 3
3:26 - that's an Xbox 360
XBOX - Was very innovative at first, re shaped the gaming market and community as a whole.
XBOX 360 - Perfected the controller, but still had a paid online service just to play online, save games, use Netflix and TH-cam, and faulty hardware(Red Ring of Death)
XBOX One - Worse beginning of a system, let alone as the marketing and services were fucked up (Used games, DRM) and then just became the XBOX 360 Part 2, just with a dumbed down controller (for me anyway).
SGT TUBA True. The price was insane. But then again, they were losing money anyway whenever they sold one...
@@CorkScrewDood So Thought On Xbox Series X
@@rubyrovers506 Series X is not really anything to rave about since it also had a weak launch since their flagship game was Halo Infinite being delayed. Game looks good, but its late arrival impaired the console's release thus no one is really taking about it as much as the PS5.
ahh the original Xbox I remember that my first game for the original Xbox was Halo: Combat evolved
But Microsoft Owns Windows Master Race
Ron Fourier Alonzo It's the PC master race, though, not the Windows master race.
Did anyone else think that the Xbox start-up screen looked like a green Kirby preforming sick dance moves?
For me it looked like green diarrhea being experimented on. Just like the console. It's a piece of shit.
+Vandolphvibar09-GamelordPH so savage.
The start up intro noise brought back so many memories
Although I love the Xbox, in my opinion, of all of the major consoles during that time, the GameCube had the better exclusives, the PS2 had the better hardware, and the Xbox was in between.
+TheMasterchiefan Ps2 had better hardware? Last time I checked, Gamecube and Xbox had better hardware.
Änærchy GøD Pretty much.
no no no no no haha no. PS2 had THE BEST exclusives. period.
rico anderson Haha nope.

Fawthur Are you fucking stupid? The reason pirating rates are so high on PC is because it's so easy to do. It's not easy on a fucking box. And you must be looking at the child community of PC.
