As much as I love all of the mario kart games, Double Dash's drift mechanics have been pure perfection since conception. I've won multiple tournaments, dodging blue shells with drifting alone. No other mario kart can compare to DD.
@@averyminya Their lawyers can show up at my door, but they can't do anything because this is a dig at their marketing department, and Nintendo's marketing doesn't baseball bat your shins like the legal retainers do.
No, the manual drifting in Double Dash! is terrible, since you have to unintuitively turn back and forth to get it to activate! Why should I need to turn right to turn left outside of possibly a licensed game of the movie "Cars"?! The automatic transmission option is a saving grace, but of course there's a stiff penalty for using it, since you can't get the best mini-turbos from it. Thankfully, they fixed this problem in the future games of the series, except apparently MK DS.
@@Compucles Manual and automatic drifting? Do you mean mini-turbos? Also, a quick jiggle of the left stick is much faster at getting max turbo compared to the duration build-up turbo that every other game uses.
Thinking about it, it kinda made sense. They did have an exclusivity deal on Gamecube, so having ports of older entries there alongside new then-exclusive games might've solidified Gamecube as the new home of Resident Evil.
@@pokemonduck Well, it's still the same reason why first and second party games are always company exclusive...except on some occasions with Microsoft these days, but even they refuse to share their biggest IPs like Halo.
My dad told me about Grizzley as a kid, about it being a Jaws rip off. He also told me that the production company for the movie was being sued, and the founder fled with 1 million dollars and was never heard from again. His name was Edward Montoro.
Shinji Mikami's statement on what Resident Evil's design philosophy is everything modern Resident Evil is missing. Every mainline RE game since 5 (arguably 4 but I think 4 is a little closer to that original style) has been all about fighting enemies rather than choosing whether you want to risk fighting them or not. RE7 disempowers the player more, but you're pretty much forced to kill every common enemy because they chase you to the ends of the earth if you don't- It still feels like an action game moreso than a survival game.
They haven't done it again because of how controversial it still is today. Plus, with the addition of bikes and other kinds of vehicles, it'll be a balancing nightmare.
@@user-be3qc7re9o Was controversial how though? I never had any issues with it. The swapping between characters, or anything. Was a pretty fun, & great game honestly.
I just wish they'd bring back the character individual super items, the other great feature that was exclusive to "Double Dash!!" Wario Colosseum, as well. Oh, and All Cup Tour...except that one is no longer feasible with all the courses they cram into the games now.
@Compucles For sure! I never got to play the Wario Collosseum i dont think. All Cup Tour would be great, but i agree with you on too many courses for it to work.
I'm not at all opposed to the character switching, I just don't see the appeal. What in your opinion was so fun about that mechanic? I've played double dash, I just don't find it to be special.
Those giant bananas are why I always pick Diddy or Donkey Kong as one of my racers in the single player modes. They're essential for slowing down the cheap rubber-banding AI at chokepoints and setting traps right before ledges on higher CC's. I usually pick one of the Koopas for my other racer so I get access to triple red shells too.
that was very smart of Scott to consider torque. going faster decreases your angular velocity. surprised 3d sonic never incorporated that. games in that series either have sonic feel too sensitive at top speed or too sluggish at slower speeds.
I kid you not, I first laid eyes upon Grizzly a couple days ago when my step dad checked it out on Netflix. I was floored at what on Earth I was looking at. So to see it briefly show up in the intro flash banged the HECK outta me.
Good news, designing games are easier these days with the insane amount of tutorials for gaming engines, the tricky part is to practice and be constant, and of course, having the time to dedicate yourself to that thing since it is clearly time demanding and consuming, otherwise, if you like and trust the process, then you can enjoy it!
It's okay. I've already found a new calling. And since I got a good degree, I can always switch to the game industry if what I'm doing now isn't the best job.

Im so glad you guys are covering things from different languages. There's so much that people don't know about their favorite series just because of language barriers. Something a community widely knows might've gone unknown by the majority of people in another language for decades.
It's always good to remember though that deadlines are what get some games finished at all too. Too much time on hand and you get spinning wheels going nowhere, the project losing focus on what matters, disheartened developers, raised expectations that can't be met...
This is a great way to do the did you know videos. Rather than rapid fire bits of info. I appreciate the history that goes along with it. It was a great video. Thank you.
5:10 - Honestly he kinda sounds weak...he left Retro for EA... and expected less of a crunch from EA known for yearly sports releases, Battlefield, and at least the great SSX series... among other games...
"we didn't want new fans to have to buy a Playstation to experience the rest of the story" Damn if only Square Enix would learn from that. They did Kingdom Hearts 3 on Xbox without porting the rest for years. Then they made the Crisis Core remake on all consoles, but the FFVII Remake is still mostly a Playstation thing with PC later on.
If you're wondering what took Prime 4 so long, when you compare the development timeline of the restart with the development timeline of most other games, they entered full production around 2020. And there's your answer.
Man, I love these videos. Learning about this nostalgic period of my life makes me feel like there was bonus content I never got to experience, now now I have the players guide so I get to see everything I missed xD
Not at all most powerful, but it was impressive at times, no doubt. Its failure was just simply an unfortunate timing culturally. I wish Sunshine and Wind Waker hadn't been rushed, though.
It also had excellent 3rd party support that still has not been matched on a Nintendo console since then, not even with the Switch. However, even if they had used full-sized discs, there was still no beating the PS2 unless their console also had online play (over the Internet) and DVD playback (back when DVD players were new and very expensive).
The fact about scott makes me realize the reason of those delays a bit more… Jfc metroid was lucky to be announced finished but…man. imagine if this the same reason metroid 4 was delayed so much. Im starting to see these games require a LOT of stuff…and so much time…
True true. Having worked in various fields of IT. I think gaming is underrated. It is the HARDEST field of all IT fields. You need to combine everything: grafics, physics, networking, special effects, customization, etc etc. It's ridiculous
I wonder why they never went back to adding back the option of tandem karts. Mario Kart kind of peaked at double dash in general TBH. I mean sure, 7 and 8 are fun with the low gravity and transformation mechanics but they're just not the same.
I think part of it is also how drifting feels in DD vs 7 and 8. There is a small difference but noticeable enough. I prefer DD's driving feel than the latest games.
I cannot imagine Double Dash being such a success or so memorable without the double kart system, the special team items, or tracks like Baby Park and D.K. Mountain. Amazing to think about how they all came to be.
The morph ball trick is very satisfying to look at. Watching morph ball be lined up the more the speed grows, this is a very clever visual aspect for the game ! It is not even hard to implement. Let say you have a ball with a weight, you just have to add 4 weight point around the sphere, making a plane, so the ball would be affected by the torque from the additional weight points when the ball gains speed.
I still got my gamecube it was fun to work on internationally but I decided to retire it when I got my Wii that plays GC games But I still make sure my gamecube is in great condition, the system and how it was built was very unique it's kinda like wearing multiple hats, Definitely best system ever
I keep my GameCube around mainly for one reason: The Game Boy Player. It's my Wii I no longer have hooked up due to it being redundant next to my GameCube and Wii U (plus, I transferred my digital account to my Wii U).
the whole 60 hour work week just proves that its not that games are getting more expensive now, its just that companies arent getting away with that kind of bs anymore and have to staff appropriately, if games back then were staffed like they are these days they would have cost alot more but crunch was way more prominent then with people being paid less
Its not just staffing appropriately because more staff can have its own issues, but planning out the development a lot better. Just like a remodeling project, add a reasonable cushion of time for underlying problems that may be found which would end up delaying progress.
What do you mean? They are still getting away with it. You’re still looking at 60 hours per week or more even with hundreds of staff (employees or contractors). I get what you’re saying but even with that in mind, I do think games are more expensive, and there’s multiple factors involved. You could get away with a lot less back then. If you had posters with “text” in game, it could be blurry scribbles, whereas now you need someone to write, proofread, translate in multiple languages, and made it. It’s minor, but an example of the exponential growth that occurred with the jump to HD. You could get away with objects or areas being single flat drawn images, whereas now everything is its own model. Ya modelling software has improved, but outside buying pre-made Unity assets, those will still take more time than that one image. But most of all… making open-world games. The detail with each aspect has grown, and then you try making a big interconnected world as well. Whereas most games were linear back in the day. So it was shorter (in content), and took less time to develop. Now, that’s not to say it’s a free pass. These companies don’t get to whine it takes half a decade to make and cost obscene amounts of money when they’re making record profits (even account for inflation). You could say the customer is “forcing” them, but they make no attempts to scale it back in anyway, or bother developing smaller projects. They bet it all on high risk, high reward, and then complain to you as if they’re not swimming in money. They don’t care about sustainability (why certain IP like Nintendo’s are so valuable), which is why they push and burn through employees. Their workers, even the higher up ones, mean nothing to them. Meanwhile, you’ve got people at Japanese companies there for 20-30 years.
@@mrshmuga9 Although, isn't that much more of a problem with Japanese white collar companies in general? At least a number of isekai manga and light novels claim it is.
@@kamikazilucas And who is claiming that? Rockstar themselves? I'll believe it once a few employees say something. There's also the practice of guilt-tripping people. They may not "force" you to work overtime, but if everyone else does and you don't they won't like you and management might treat you worse "not a team player". The only shift I'm aware of is Eidos Montreal switching to 4 day work weeks. They keep the same pay, and they're still only working 8 hours a day (so 32h a week instead of 12h days to keep 40h a week). So they get an extra day off with no compromises. I'm interested to see how that works for them in a couple years, and if anyone else will try to replicate it. Looks like that happened 3 or so years ago. Maybe it'll be mentioned alongside their next game.
While hearing Shinji MIkami was so obsessed he went around stores to fix their TV's to make his game look as good as it possibly could, combining it with that revelation that Scott got super-burned out doing his best to make Samus's Morph Ball work is... making me wonder what it was like to work under a guy like Mikami.
It was nice to learn about more Double Dash. I'm glad they saw the appeal of Baby Park because it wouldn't be quite the same game otherwise. I believe it's both fun for it's sheer chaos and a great way to break-in new players as without any boost pads, they usually want to learn how to go faster and quickly figure out what the items do.
As a multi-time visitor to Newport, RI, which also has mansions you can tour... I'm totally with Mikami on the mansions. One is kind of interesting, but then they get boring.
Its always amazing hearing how nervous the developers we're about certain features, I love all these games and to think they might've been different if they had cold feet is crazy.
Great vid! Especially the spotlight on Scott, and the destructive nature of crunch. Who knows what else folks like Scott could have contributed if they weren't squeezed out of thr industry? Thank you for honestly reporting his reasons for departure.
The quote early on of, "It is great he could articulate and tell me what he wanted." is such a designer thing to say. I have over a decade of drafting and design career experience, and it is insane how bad people are at just saying what they want the final product to do/look like. Like you don't need to know every technical detail about every screw in the product we make for you, but at least know vaguely what problem you want solved. This extends to people commissioning artwork too. My sibling is an artist and he hates the commissions that are like, "Uh I was a guy with a big sword and he has a red jacket." My sibling just sits there and is like, "Is this guy posing with the sword in any specific way? How old is the guy? Is he wearing just a jacket?" Like you don't need to know everything, but it helps to at least be like, "I need a drizzled warrior resting on his sword after a long battle. His jacket is a red military uniform that is open with a tank top underneath." and boom now that is a point iteration can begin from.
Bro I need to play the singleplayer version of MKDD. I hope one day Nintendo releases it alongside GameCube legacy content or makes an old Mario Kart collection that has it or something.
Funny to be German (or Japanese) and read those magazines and know those things while English speakers are unaware. We live in auch global times but still a bunch of information is language locked.
Scott Johnson's story is so telling. Nobody should feel old at 35, but the games industry will chew you up and spit you out if you let your passion overrule your self-respect
Fun fact; that rotational torque value that applied to the morph ball when it is rolling in a straight direction is actually the reason that the well-known glitch "infinite speed" works.
Man this is why Double Dash is still the most creative and fun Mario Kart game, they really made a big banana and thought "That's so funny we should put it in the game"
I loved double dash, I got half way though playing that game solo then my older brother came over asked what I was playing and after that we ran though the rest of the game, best time ever, I wish they'd bring that back as an option mode for a new Mario Kart
Double Dash is the best Mario Kart game ever made and I will fight anyone who thinks otherwise. The tandem mechanic allowed for strategy and the manual drift boost control allowed for more skill-based racing
It’s sweet that you gave credit to Scott Johnson! People like him deserve more credit 😊

As much as I love all of the mario kart games, Double Dash's drift mechanics have been pure perfection since conception. I've won multiple tournaments, dodging blue shells with drifting alone. No other mario kart can compare to DD.
Double Dash is such a unique experience, and I wish they would port it.
@@jasonkeith2832 clearly you aren't thinking of the MK8D sales, Nintendo's lawyers will be in touch with you.
9:13 I think they really perfected this philosophy in RE4 when Leon backflipped off the door instead of just backing up like a normal person
Heres a new tid bit of info about Prime, apparently Tomy Tallarico coded the entire game hand on hand with miyamoto. His mom is very proud.
Funny, I was a flyer between Germany and Japan in the early 2000s! Moved to Germany in 2001 and got a GameCube while living there.
I was hoping I'd see this comment
But the real question is: Have you already been aware of this video's trivia?
11:33 That's such a frank way to port games. A simple "we don't want them buying the competitor." Honestly pretty cool.
Thinking about it, it kinda made sense. They did have an exclusivity deal on Gamecube, so having ports of older entries there alongside new then-exclusive games might've solidified Gamecube as the new home of Resident Evil.
sadly that doesn't happen anymore with many franchises split on many consoles...
@@pokemonduckThe Kingdom Hearts fanbase: *PTSD intensifies*
@@pokemonduck Well, it's still the same reason why first and second party games are always company exclusive...except on some occasions with Microsoft these days, but even they refuse to share their biggest IPs like Halo.
Now it’s put the first game on pc and force them to buy a system to play the rest. Complete 180 from all those years ago.
My dad told me about Grizzley as a kid, about it being a Jaws rip off. He also told me that the production company for the movie was being sued, and the founder fled with 1 million dollars and was never heard from again. His name was Edward Montoro.
Jeez 😅
Shinji Mikami's statement on what Resident Evil's design philosophy is everything modern Resident Evil is missing. Every mainline RE game since 5 (arguably 4 but I think 4 is a little closer to that original style) has been all about fighting enemies rather than choosing whether you want to risk fighting them or not. RE7 disempowers the player more, but you're pretty much forced to kill every common enemy because they chase you to the ends of the earth if you don't- It still feels like an action game moreso than a survival game.
The double dash mechanics were amazing. Wish theyd do another with similar mechanics.
Was that a "Y can't Metroid crawl?" Reference in 2024?
Well played, DYKG.
Miiverse was amazing.
Scott Johnson is the hero I didn’t know I had.
I kid you not, I first laid eyes upon Grizzly a couple days ago when my step dad checked it out on Netflix. I was floored at what on Earth I was looking at. So to see it briefly show up in the intro flash banged the HECK outta me.
Poor Scott. He reminded me of how 20 years ago, I wanted to become a game designer. Things change now in my 30s.
Never too late

Imagine how good games would have been/would be if there was no “Christmas/Seasonal Deadline”…
It's always good to remember though that deadlines are what get some games finished at all too. Too much time on hand and you get spinning wheels going nowhere, the project losing focus on what matters, disheartened developers, raised expectations that can't be met...
Double Dash's partner system should be a mode in whatever next Mario Kart entry is being brewed over at Nintendo.
Some game developers back then were legends. I'd love to see more of that in today's games.
0:20 Homeland is such a cool game, the online part looks super neat as well. Hope Spike Chunsoft gives the game another shot someday…

Imma say that back then mah boi GameCube was dissed in every opportunity and it was, perhaps, the most powerful console of its time.
Shot themselves in the foot with the mini-dvd format
Not at all most powerful, but it was impressive at times, no doubt.
Its failure was just simply an unfortunate timing culturally.
I wish Sunshine and Wind Waker hadn't been rushed, though.
Xbox was the most powerful console that generation.
and while the library isn't very big, there is so much good stuff in it :D
It also had excellent 3rd party support that still has not been matched on a Nintendo console since then, not even with the Switch.
However, even if they had used full-sized discs, there was still no beating the PS2 unless their console also had online play (over the Internet) and DVD playback (back when DVD players were new and very expensive).
The fact about scott makes me realize the reason of those delays a bit more…
Jfc metroid was lucky to be announced finished but…man. imagine if this the same reason metroid 4 was delayed so much.
That morph ball is prob my fav element of prime. Always thought it felt so natural to control and satisfying. Great to see who's behind it
Crunch time has plagued the video game industry for so long.....

I cannot imagine Double Dash being such a success or so memorable without the double kart system, the special team items, or tracks like Baby Park and D.K. Mountain. Amazing to think about how they all came to be.
shout out Scott
The morph ball trick is very satisfying to look at. Watching morph ball be lined up the more the speed grows, this is a very clever visual aspect for the game !
It is not even hard to implement. Let say you have a ball with a weight, you just have to add 4 weight point around the sphere, making a plane, so the ball would be affected by the torque from the additional weight points when the ball gains speed.
I still got my gamecube it was fun to work on internationally but I decided to retire it when I got my Wii that plays GC games
But I still make sure my gamecube is in great condition, the system and how it was built was very unique it's kinda like wearing multiple hats, Definitely best system ever
@@mrshmuga9 most game companies are now going away from it, even rockstar are not doing it anymore after having 100 hour work weeks
I'm working on my German degree right now and minoring in Japanese, if you need help translating in the future I can help!
Double Dash was my first ever Mario game as a kid. Accessibility to new players? They nailed it.
As a multi-time visitor to Newport, RI, which also has mansions you can tour... I'm totally with Mikami on the mansions. One is kind of interesting, but then they get boring.

Double-Dash IS the best MK game to date. Anything else that released afterwards, feels too safe and dull.
Interesting nostalgia coded take
I only played Double Dash recently via emulation, after watching Rebeltaxi's video about Gamecube games and I enjoyed it a lot.
Channels like these are the reason why I love gaming!
10:09 impressive, he bought a DVD for a B-series movie in 1995, before it was available to the public.
Nice to highlight him!
The resident evil info was awesome 🤩
The fact they included Scott in Metroid for a Japanese company after quoting is praise enough. He made his decision.
Tiburon is Spanish for shark.
Man this is why Double Dash is still the most creative and fun Mario Kart game, they really made a big banana and thought "That's so funny we should put it in the game"
3:25 Scott Johnson sorta looks like Jim Carrey
Amazing video. Tonnes of research went into this. Love this channel!
I loved double dash, I got half way though playing that game solo then my older brother came over asked what I was playing and after that we ran though the rest of the game, best time ever, I wish they'd bring that back as an option mode for a new Mario Kart
🏆 RetroAchievements for GameCube launches tonight! Good timing!
Making the first RE zombie stronger then the others is devious af but makes so much sense
U ever talk about super scope 6?
New gamecube facts? Hell yeah!!
I'm tire. 🛞
Thank you Scott family >
"just running away in a horror game isn't good"
lol *laughs in amnesia*
0:23 Ah, _P.N.03._ That's a GameCube game that literally no one talks about.
Yet it's the only game of the illusive Capcom Five that remains exclusive to the GameCube.
It was mid of the mids
Double Dash is the best Mario Kart game ever made and I will fight anyone who thinks otherwise. The tandem mechanic allowed for strategy and the manual drift boost control allowed for more skill-based racing
