  • What is the difference between love and attraction? Can you fall in love with someone you don’t initially get along with?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright compare the many couples from Enchanted, particularly Giselle and Edward and Giselle and Robert. They talk about what love is and why the classic love at first sight and true love’s kiss tropes don’t work. They discuss what it’s like to play a cartoon character in live action, and why Amy Adams nails it. They’re excited for Enchanted 2 and what Giselle and Robert’s relationship looks like years later.

I really like how Nancy wasn't portrayed as a jealous competitor. She was rightfully upset that her boyfriend had a half-naked woman in his apartment, but accepts and forgives his apology. When she realizes that Robert is Giselles true love, she puts her own feelings aside and tells him to kiss her. Although her ending is kinda cheesy, I'm glad she got a happy ending

That's actually a good point, like she ended up instead of being bitter, she was upset or felt some sadness which is natural, but instead takes her steps and moves on and of course in true fairytale fashion found someone for herself

My head canon is that she knows that Robert really isn’t that into her, but he’s a dad with a daughter who isn’t jaded and cynical.
When you’re marrying someone with kids, you’re marrying the kids too. Being a mom to an adorable little girl who needs a mom in her life may be what both of them need and Robert is simply a convenient vehicle to that relationship who provides a lot of practical value and stability.
Possible she’s also been hurt in the past and Robert’s practicality might not be what she wants, but that stability may be more valuable to her than the romance.

I will try to not to spoil but I was always sad at how Morgan spoke about Nancy. I understand her view as a kid not wanting her dad to date again, especially with someone he doesn't vibe with. However, when we meet Nancy she's really just a normal lovely lady, maybe unused to kids. A great step mother trope break.
In the new film, it feels like they address that a little. She becomes one person Morgan can actually rely on in a fairy godmother ish way. It felt like a retro-active apology of sorts

And in the small snippets she gets of his character from their interactions she can tell he'd be a great man / is what she is actually looking for.
      1) he's romantic (he introduces Giselle in very big, passionate terms.)
      2) he's not afraid to commit (getting married after a non existent courtship.
      3) he doesn't play games. (he's starting to clue into the Robert/Giselle romance and instead of flirting with Nancy he keeps an eye on them.)
      4) he's willing to accept advice/ influence from others, even if he doesn't like them, if it's the best course of action. (It's Robert that suggests true loves kiss and he goes with the idea)
      5) he has great respect for women and isn't intimated by them being smarter or having power. (He is very deferral to Narissa, his step mother and Queen regent. He refers to her as mother. He only strip's her of her title / ability to rule for her evil deeds. If she had been decent I'm sure he would have sought her advice for running the kingdom.)
      6) he's generous and caring enough to put the needs and welfare of others above his own. (When he tells Robert to kiss Giselle and after she's back he looks genuinely happy for them even though it means he has no bride. He could have also taken Giselle back to Andalasia without marrying her since that's where she belongs but instead sets her free.)

The things is: Robert was saying he was ready to marry Nancy because he believed he fully knew her. But as Giselle set up romantic things for her, Robert was surprised that Nancy enjoys fresh flowers and was absolutely down for the Kings and Queens Ball. He missed this whole entire side of her despite being with her for 5 years. Something so many couples do to each other. They think they know all there is to know and stop pursuing each other. They stop learning about each and just start co-existing.

The thing I like the most about Enchanted is that it consistently upends tropes like "damsel in distress", "love at first sight", etc. But more than anything, Giselle gets to be feminine, "girlie" and badass at the same time. At a time when femininity was looked down upon (the 2000s were a fever dream), this character is a pink princess who slays dragons with a sword. Because you can be both. And I love that.

One of the things I really like about the “That’s How You Know” song is that it basically goes through the different love languages.
“Does he leave a little note to tell you you’re on his mind?” Words of affirmation
“Send you yellow flowers when the sky is gray?” Gift giving
“Does he take you out dancing just so he can hold you close?” Quality time and physical touch
“Dedicate a song with words meant just for you?” Words of affirmation
“Wear your favorite color.” Service i guess?
“Plan a private picnic by the fire’s glow.” Quality time/service/gift giving
And of the “he’ll find a new way to show you a little bit everyday” which I think is the key message to the song and to healthy loving relationships. Love is a choice, and you have to show your partner that you love them everyday, in whichever way they find meaningful.

Both Giselle and Robert make valid points about relationships during the Central Park scene. Robert insists that you have to take the time to get to know the other person before getting into a serious relationship, and that many impulsive ones can end badly, while Giselle insists that it needs to be romantic. For a relationship to be successful, you need to both work a building a solid foundation, and to let your partner know how much they mean to you.

Nathaniel was oddly satisfying as a character after he stopped simping for Narissa. She is so obviously manipulating him, but he just keeps falling for it through most of the movie. So it made me smile so hard when he finally stood up to her. And the fact that he was ashamed of what he had been complicit in doing, but still taking responsibility... Good on you, Nathaniel! You don't have to put up with that, and you can stand up and say, "No. I'm not going to do this, and I'm not going to protect you from the consequences of your actions. One where a party thinks all the bad things their partner is doing is right in their own way, maybe they’ll change, its okay they’re doing it for me. The moment she said “worthless” to him is when he finally gets that he was always just a tool. If we see the scene where she acts pitiful and manipulates him into going to the real world, she’s actually giving him a hope of togetherness so his simping isn’t mainly a one sided crush. He really was led on by her numerous times until the real world changes his perspective.

One of my favorite things about this movie is that the pre-existing love interests AREN'T the villains! That's SO rare in a romance/rom-com. So often the main characters are attached to awful people and the choice in the end is simply to not be with a terrible person. But in this one, it wasn't that anyone was "bad", but they just weren't with the right person. It wasn't a black and white good/evil issue but just... this new person is a better match for me, and we're all happier with these other people because we're a better fit, not because the other one was a bad person.

I also like how even though we're mostly following Giselle as a point of view character, and Robert is maybe the more relatable one as the audience lives in the real world like him, neither of their perspectives on love and relationships are shown to be wrong/ignorant or completely compromised/invalidated. They just see two different sides to it, which are both important and have value. Like a lot of media will side with one over the other regarding its message and how it frames things - either the sunny optimistic character needs to be more realistic about the world and learn how uncaring and harsh it is, or the grumpy cynic needs to open up and learn to love and enjoy life.
But neither character is entirely one or the other themselves so it avoids those flat archetypes (and falling into the worst parts of some tropes like the MPDG as they're helping/supporting and inspiring each other instead). So Giselle is able to navigate and understand the "real world" and find joy and beauty in it (while bringing some of her own from hers), and Robert lets her be more realistic with herself about her feelings and what she really wants. All that to say, I love this movie and it's easily up there for me in fun fantasy/fairytale movies where I can endlessly rewatch and find something new to appreciate and overanalyse each time, along with Stardust and Tangled. ♥️

I love how Edward is not an asshole. He's genuinely a good person and he cares so much about Giselle that he begs Robert to kiss her. He just wants a good life with a nice lady and, honestly, who doesn't? Not exactly the most mature view of love, but you can see that he's willing to try and make his partner happy. I know it's a movie and all but the scene where Giselle finally feels anger is something that happened for me (not exactly that way but still). Since I was a little girl, I've had troubles expressing my emotions or even understanding them and in my current relationship (thanks to him and a lot of selfwork), I'm starting to be able to feel anger, to say out loud that this is anger and to work though it. I remember once when he was badly getting on my nerves and I actually enjoyed the feeling because for the first time it was real and strong. I was angry and smiling at the same time.

She was just so sweet and wanted to be liked and had this identity of being the good girl/the mature sibling/the responsible older sister. The first time she blew up at a situation I was grinning so hard. She stopped mid-rant and was like: WHY ARE YOU SMILING?!! And I responded: I’m smiling cause I’m so proud of you for finally speaking up. And from that point on she never had a problem telling me her opinions 😅😅. @@travisboutilier2220Um, no? People aren't obligated to stay in a relationship or engagement, especially if they're not right for each other and it isn't working. If that's the case, it's better for them to mutually end it before they make any further, more serious commitments (such as marriage). As long as the break-up or calling off is respectful and mature, and there's no betrayal such as cheating, it's just a normal part of human relationships. Not everyone finds the right person the first time around, and we're not all mated for life. There is no binding contract for engagements in most cases. We're not in a Jane Austen novel. So why do they "have to stay with them"?
Also, neither original couple is really engaged - Robert says he was planning on proposing to Nancy but doesn't, while Giselle and Edward immediately skipped to marriage and missed that whole period, so 🤷. Either way, I hardly think this film is seriously affecting people's decisions on their relationships to the point it "encourages them to go against their engagements".

He was ready to dispatch Robert, but only because he thought he thought he was holding Giselle captive. When he found out he wasn't, he dropped it immediately and didn't hold a grudge or become suspicious. When she started trying to test him by real world standards after her time spent there, he was refreshingly resilient. He didn't melt down or have a tantrum when Giselle wasn't singing back to him like she usually would. When she told him she wanted to go on a date, he didn't scoff or refuse, he was just like, "Of course! Whatever will make you happy!" When his kiss didn't wake Giselle, he doesn't waste time sulking, he just asks Robert to do it. Truly elevated, golden retriever boyfriend energy.

But I would say "love and the recognition that relationships need work make it last"? I mean, it depends, there are surely people who just do everything right naturally and who are maybe quite similar in certain things (values, how they feel about certain situations, how they handle them and so on) so they don't get in that much conflict. The problem with Robert and Nancy's relationship is that Robert took practicality to an insane extreme imo. Nancy was asking for just a base of romance, just get her one bouquet of real flowers, not a freaking Pinterest e-card with flowers and a note that even your boss would consider distant. Nancy wanted to go out dancing and he didn't view the romanticism in it so he wasn't interested. He was FAR TOO practical and everyone saw it and called it out, which is why the secretary was like that in the scene. She wasn't insulting marriage she was saying that that is what a marriage without love becomes so does he really want to marry Nancy without loving her.

Not only aren't they selling land (apparently it's not legally possible to sell plots that small), but even if they were, you also don't get to call yourself a laird if you do own land in Scotland (that's an inherited title). And on top of it, they're not planting any trees, at least not themselves, and while they claim to give money to a separate charity that does plant trees, there's apparently no evidence for that other than their word for it (and that charity, while legit, plants trees on land that's already protected, so it's doubtful it makes THAT much of a real difference).

YES. The trope where the former love interest reveals themselves to be a jerk is called the "Disposeable Love Interest," and it's wonderful that they didn't use it here. Making the former/rival love interest just act like an asshole (sometimes seemingly out of nowhere) is supposed to be a kind of band-aid for the fact that the new couple is technically committing infidelity. It's like an emotional "Get out of jail free" card, where they say that what the new couple is doing is fine, because the former love/rival love "is clearly a jerk, they deserve it!", rather than acknowledging that real love, emotions, and relationships are complex, and, like another commenter said, people DO fall out of love sometimes, or just realise that they're not ultimately a good fit long-term.

Alan, my only argument against "love at first sight" is this: I've known my wife since we were little kids, like 4 years old.
But, when I graduated high school, I moved away and didn't see her again for almost 10 years. We reconnected an event where it was kinda like out of a movie. She entered the room, I saw her for the first time since we were teenagers, and saw that she had grown into this beautiful woman now standing in front of me, and in my head I literally had this "Wow" moment, and thought to myself "I have to ask her out, right now"
Granted, I waited a week to actually ask, had to find out if she was single, get her number, etc, but now 12 years later we are going on 11 years married. So, if that isn't "love at first sight" I think it's the closest real world comparison.

They’ve basically encompassed everything I loved about this film: highlighting the incredible performances of Adams and Marsden, appreciation for that key set piece in Central Park, breaking down the contrasting themes of love at a grounded and fairytale POV - Enchanted is such an underrated classic. I’m so glad I grew up watching the Disney classics to appreciate every bit of this movie and it became a worthwhile story of its own, one that people in real life can take a page from.

To your point about Giselle’s highly simplistic understanding of relationships, I honestly think that most girls growing up in fundamentalist religious traditions have the same problem. I know that for me certainly, purity culture really set me up to believe that having serial relationships, even non-sexual serial relationships was morally wrong. Even the idea of dating more than one person was incomprehensible. I was only supposed to court the person my parents approved up, and then marry them. There was no concept of figuring out who you wanted to marry through dating, or even who you wanted to be outside of your role as a wife and mother. I remember in one of our purity talks as passing around a rose, and every person would pluck a petal off so that by the time it made its way around the room, there were no petals left, and that was supposed to be us in serial relationships. My husband got the same sort of talk, but for him they told him to imaging that a girl was like a piece of gum. My challenge now will be teaching my children how to have a healthy relationship with dating, which I have no idea how to do!

If I knew then what I know now, I would have made completely different choices. I would have completely taken religion out of the equation and lived my life as I happy human being.

Purity is a good thing, and preserving as much of it as possible is right. But one thing a lot of people miss is that even though you shouldn't have sex before marrying, you can date without having sex. Dating is supposed to be the stage of getting to know the person and find out if you're compatible, and by definition is non-committal.

@@RoninCatholicExactly this! I saved myself for my husband and our wedding night was really special and it meant a lot to him that I had done so. But it didn't mean that I just sat around waiting for my prince charming! My religious upbringing included a lot of pondering the kind of man I wanted to marry, and in turn the kind of girl I needed to become, as well as getting to know a lot of guys so I could figure out who fit that image as well as practice social skills. I didn't personally date all that much just because for whatever reason I was not the kind of girl a lot of guys wanted to date, so I always had to initiate and it was IMPOSSIBLE for me to get repeat dates except for two men, one of whom I am now married to. But I went to a LOT of dances and single activities, even forced myself sometimes because I was very shy. Social interaction before marriage is very important.

Okay, first of all, WE STAN DISNEY PRINCESS JONATHAN. 🤩 Second of all, when I was still in my abusive marriage, the lyric, "Everybody wants to live happily ever after," used to make me cry and I didn't really know why. I knew even then that "happily ever after" in the real world was complex and doesn't mean "happy every minute all the time". But I was making so many excuses for my abusive spouse and deep down I knew something was very, very wrong. And what I finally realized was that me saying "happily every after takes work," in this case, really translated to "I'm unhappy and that's just what life is like," and it doesn't have to be. I love this movie.

I really appreciate you bringing that up. I can definitely see opportunities for someone like Giselle being abused by someone positioning themselves as a princely savior type. I love that the moment Giselle is humanized in Robert's eyes is when she starts to get angry, because abusers HATE when their victims get angry or say no. And I love that Robert is the one to turn down Giselle's kiss at first because of the potential of betraying someone's trust. I saw in their James Bond video, Jono said "seduction is about persuasion ('you're gonna hafta try harder'), coercion is about getting someone to do something they don't want to do." With someone younger, they might be attracted to someone older but the older person should do what Robert does and think things through. Because in an abusers eyes, it's a case of "Isn't this what you've wanted since you were old enough to want?" With abuse, there is no place for 'want' because your agency and right to experiment has been taken away. That's why for predators, the victim can just be "the seductive party animal" and people will fill in the blanks. This movie was very healing for me since my abuse made me go from optimistic like Gisele to cynical like Robert. It's nice to watch Cinema Therapy and see what love, connection, trust, and respect look like. And its nice to see someone like Robert start to heal rather than become a Rick Sanchez or Bojack Horseman type.

Of course exceptions exists but in general I believe this to be the case and usually when people say their love was "love at first sight" they mean they were attracted/infatuated by each other from the start

Two other things I love about this movie:
    - Nathaniel has a happy ending and isn't portrayed as just evil, because having been manipulated so much he's seen as a victim too. Loved this gray portrayal.
    - After 5 years of relationship when Nancy "catches" Robert with Giselle she doesn't bring Morgan to school to have their "big girls time together". Treating it as if it was a favour to Robert. One would think that after 5 years she'd have a separate relationship with Morgan than the one she has with Audrey.
And then there's Giselle who loves Morgan from day one, and everything she does for her is because she genuinely has an interest in her and having a relationship with her. I still love Nancy's character but I think Robert started loving Giselle after he saw how she behaved with his daughter.

I feel Robert has deliberately kept Nancy and Morgan apart for fear of having another mother abandon her.
The whole point of taking her to school was to get to know her. This would indicate they don't know each other or have met very few times.
Robert wanted to be sure before introducing her. But 5 years? Like 2 years in of steady dating he could have introduced her.

after repeated watching I realized that the point is that Robert never let Morgan and Nancy build a relationship until he's ready to propose. For Morgan, Nancy is just a reasonably nice lady who her dad spends time with when she's not around. From her point of view, Nancy isn't really a romantic partner of Roberts. Robert unknowingly built a wall around himself AND Morgan which prevents Morgan from forming bonds with Nancy. I mean, after five years? Morgan should be bonded to Nancy by now. Clearly Robert prevented that. So him telling Morgan he was going to propose to Nancy would naturally be a big surprise to her. Nancy is just some ever-present shadowy figure she barely knows.
