    I loved the part at the end of Tangled when Rapunzel’s long, beautiful golden hair is cut off and Eugene makes that playful comment that he has always had a thing for brunettes. Her hair was the only thing that was ever considered worthwhile or special about her and Eugene tells her straight away that he loves her new hair with the underlying meaning that he loves her with or without her special gift without her having to ask him for reassurance. He already anticipated something that could bother her and immediately reassured her in a playful, lighthearted way.

    I feel like Tangled is less “bad guy with a heart of gold/bad guy with soft spot for girl” and more of a “nice guy with a heart of gold who tries to be a bad guy as a coping mechanism” he put up walls his entire life because he’s only known loss and loneliness. That’s what makes it different and I think that’s why it feels better than most “bad guy turns good” movies and storylines
    Edit: I’m sick and tired of all the comments about age. She turned 18 on the day the movie takes place. He is 26. While that is a troubling age gap, and it is a little bit risky seeing as she’s only been 18 for a day, he was not taking advantage of her at all. It’s evident throughout the movie that he GENUINELY falls in love. And it’s mutual before he even tries to do anything. It’s a VERY healthy relationship, and while the age gap is upsetting for a lot of people, I hope you can see how I feel about the fact that they genuinely care about each other.
    Edit: He was not 26 when they met, he was 23, he was 26 when she turned 21. So my point stands anyway, but those of you who are uncomfortable with the age, I hope this changes your mind

    The thing that most people don’t know is that the prince never asked or ordered the search for Cinderella using the shoe, it was all his father. He was so desperate for his son to get married and wanted grandchildren so bad that when Cinderella ran away he got so mad and said that whoever fits the glass slipper the prince is to marry. The duke actually tells him that there’s no way she’s the only one with this shoe size and the king just says that it’s the prince’s problem. So yeah, the prince did remember Cinderella’s face and we actually see that in Cinderella 3 a twist in time :)

    One of the best relationships to me is David and Nani from Lilo and Stitch. David doesn’t even have to improve throughout the entire movie. He’s just as he needs to be from start to finish. He understands that Nani is under too much pressure to be in a relationship, even though he has obvious feelings for her. Instead, he is just there for her and Lilo, not just because he likes Nani, but out of the kindness of his heart.

      Lilo and Stitch is a great movie in general. The characters are amazing, and the two main messages are great: a family doesn't have to be a mom, a dad and the children, it can be anything. And the message of "no matter what's your past or conditions, you can find your place somewhere".

He shed the persona he had put on himself, to make himself more attractive, more successful, more whatever all he thought he needed to be and just was himself when he was with her. He didn't change, he just relaxed. Which didn't mean he lost everything he had become with the persona, some of it remained. Some of it was the same. He just left behind the parts that weren't true to himself.

      And we got to see more of that in the series. In the first season he was very much Flynn Rider, but that was while he was in the palace around people he'd stolen from and lied to and also people who could push aside the fact that he saved their daughter and throw him in jail immediately. When it was just him and Rapunzel, he was himself. He was Eugene. Throughout the last two seasons, you see even more of that growth as he learns more from Rapunzel about being true to yourself, and here's my favorite example.
      In the series Promo Before Ever After, he proposes to her and she turns him down. Specifically, she runs out of the room in a panic, which is the worst kind of no you can get besides a laugh. In season two, he's about to try again but Rapunzel is still not ready. He was questioning it, then he found his ex, things happened, and Rapunzel tried to tell herself she was ready to be engaged. But he knew she still wasn't ready, and stopped her mid-proposal to say he was fine waiting.
      I LOVE the writers of Tangled for that. They showed even more growth in their relationship than we hoped for, and boy oh boy was it beautiful. Watch the series if you haven't, it's AMAZING.

    It's worth remembering that, when a lot of the earliest cliche fairytales were written, most people had arranged/introduced marriages, and very few people married because of true love. The 'love at first sight' trope seen in early fairy tales is SUPPOSED to be unusual and unlike the norm. People back then wanted to hear stories about love that was so much grander, purer, and more perfect than the love they experienced - a love so singular, that the two people fell in love before even knowing eachother's names.

      Same here! I'm so glad they acknowledged the nuance in the Nesquiksand scene (Tamora feeling bad about hurting Felix's eye and not wanting to hit him, but accepting it since it was their only escape and he could heal himself) because it shows that she's not one of those "we made this female character strong by having her be sadistic and violent" types. She only uses force when someone is a threat to themselves or others, or if there's no other option
      Also these two do indeed have a very happy marriage - in post-movie content like Disney Heroes: Battle Mode (and even in their few scenes [and deleted scenes] from Ralph Breaks the Internet) they're always calling each other sweet nicknames, holding hands, being affectionate, working well as a team, and respecting each other without trying to change each other. They're a lot like Gomez and Morticia and I really wish we had more Felix and Tamora content out there!

Like when we first see a flashback of her backstory when she's walking towards the Sugar Rush tunnel, she just kinda freezes before becoming aware again, but later in the shuttle with Felix she has a full-on panic episode.
      And even though Felix doesn't understand at first, he figures out pretty fast not to say "dynamite gal" around her anymore and is supportive of her, while she treats him as an equal as well and never looks down on him for being small or mild-mannered.

    I think another key reason Rapunzel and Eugene's relationship doesn't feel like the "bad boy with a heart of gold that changes for a woman" trope is because Rapunzel isn't trying to change him. She likes what she sees as he changes, but she didn't see broken boy and go "I fix him now" which is often the catalyst for the guy's change in things that follow that trope. And you guys touched on how banking on someone changing is not a good place to start a relationship when you were talking about Simba and Nala so I need not expound on that.

      Rapunzel is the worst and most toxic girlfriend to Flynn! She always lets Cassandra or anyone else always insult him while just standing there without saying a word, keeps secrets from him, draws his face on a punching bag just for Cassandra and never even apologizes for it, travels back in time to fix his personality, ignores him on the day of hearts and rejects his proposals several times even though in the movie she wanted to give up everything just to save him at the end, are you kidding me? This seems so out of character for her! And this whole rejecting marriage plotline is just a sign that they don't fit together and such a relationship could never work in real life and we shouldn't teach kids that it could, then little girls will just expect to much and end up in a divorce later in life! This just couldn't work! No self respecting man would put up with being rejected twice or would wait years to be able to truly be together with a girl if he really wants to marry her. And it just couldn't work if one person wants to get married and the other doesn't because then one person would always have to give in and in the series Flynn always has to give in, Rapunzel never does. And this just isn't fair or healthy! What about his feelings and his wishes? Why do only her feelings and wishes matter? In a healthy love relationship, both opinions should matter! And if they have such different opinions and life goals, then it just couldn't work! And then it would be time to break up! And no man would put up with this in real life unless he is a simp but Flynn wasn't one in the movie and according to his backstory he was an egoistical jerk before he met her, so it would make no sense that he could change from an egoistical player into a simp in such a short time and it's not good that Disney is sending little girls such a message. It's no wonder that so many relationships nowadays don't work out and end in a divorce or a break up if we are teaching women that they should expect that men would always give in and ignore their own wishes and opinions while the women never give them anything in return and instead act like they don't really care about them, put their female best friends always above them, just stand there while they are bullied constantly and reject their proposals several times! And it's so unfair because if the roles were reversed everyone would agree that this is toxic but if a guy is treated like that it's ok. That's such a double standard. And Rapunzel having trauma is no excuse, because he also has trauma. He grew up alone and unloved in an orphanage and on the streets and he always treats her right. This is just unfair and toxic and it angers me that people call this the healthiest relationship in Disney when it's actually toxic and when there are other Disney couples who are very healthy but are always forgotten like Tarzan and Jane or Robin Hood and maid Marian.
      And people shouldn't criticize the other princess couples for marrying so early when that is just how things worked back then when the stories are set. If anything they should criticize them for getting together so fast because back then people got engaged quickly after falling in love and there is nothing wrong with being engaged, you could be engaged for months or a year before marrying and they should have just done that with Rapunzel and Flynn. And he didn't even propose after a few days but after a few months, and for this time period that's an equivalent for a few years in our time, so it was the right time and she should have said yes. And the way this scene is framed, it looks like she wanted to say yes but then thought about how her life would be then and if that seems so horrible to her then she shouldn't be with him anymore! Flynn deserves better, he deserves someone who accepts his proposal the first time and who doesn't subconsciously consider marriage to be a trap. Whoever considers marriage to be a prison shouldn't even have a relationship! And two people who have such different wishes and goals just don't fit together and this could never work! And why is marrying framed to be bad even when it's after they know each other for months but sacrificing yourself for the other even when you have only known each other for a few days framed to be alright? If you want such a modern relationship with such problems, then don't bring in a scene in the movie when both are literally willing to give up their lives for each other after having known each other just for such a short time! And if you want to show such a romantic and touching scene where two characters want to give up anything for each other because they love each other so much, then don't ruin it later with such nonsense where she literally rejects promising to stay together with him and only to love him! It seems so ridiculous that they say she wouldn't give up her freedom for him, when she was literally willing to do that for all eternity for him in the movie! It just makes no sense! It makes that whole scene of the movie unbelievable! And why does marrying him even mean she has to give up her freedom??? It only means that if you secretly want to break up or cheat! It's just a promise to only love each other and to not break up anymore! And if she truly loved him, she would want that and not see it as having to give up her freedom! And it's just not healthy that only he wants that and this just wouldn't work and he's always treated so badly and not allowed to have a different opinion! When he has another opinion than her just once, then she travels back in time to fix his personality and people are seriously calling this healthy??? I know that wasn't her intention but she seemed to be perfectly ok with it at the end and acted like it's right that his opinion was altered against his will even though he was right at first! Flynn deserves so much better! It's also cruel that they changed his personality so much and made him so stupid! I refuse to believe the Flynn in the movie and the one in the series are the same character!
      It's just so cruel what they did to him just because of modern feminism and because Frozen made more money! But in my opinion they completely destroyed Flynn and their relationship and i wish they never made this stupid series in the first place! The story was over, there was nothing more to tell and they just ruined the beautiful love story of the movie for me and above all sent horrible messages like marrying means giving up your freedom or that a man's opinion shouldn't matter and that he should always have to change his opinions and wishes for his girl while the girl never has to make any compromises and always gets anything she wants and is worshiped all the time by her man while she never gives him anything in return and ignores his feelings and needs because they apparently don't matter! It's just not fair! And I will never forgive them all of that and never stop hating this series and I can only still enjoy the movie if I count this as not canon!

    what i've always loved dearly about the animated cinderella is the arc of a person who has been in an abusive home for most of her life learning what it means to deserve love and affection. yes, she dances with someone handsome and he finds her attractive as well, but they also walk and talk for hours on the grounds (although we the viewers get it as a montage). as the clock strikes midnight, they've been sitting and talking to each other when she needs to make a magical quick get away - her excuse is, "the prince! i haven't met the prince yet!" and the prince has a visible reaction when he realizes she spent all this time with him, not because she's after the crown, but because she genuinely enjoyed his company. i think that's the actual important moment in the new relationship, not the locking eyes and dancing a waltz.
    cinderella gets a lot of hate from folks who haven't watched her movie in a long time (or ever). but i think those folks underestimate how powerful it is to find affection when you've been told all your life that you are garbage, barely fit to serve the people who were supposed to love and protect you the most, when you finally accept (accept and believe, not realize) your humanity and your dignity and your wholeness. and if you actually watch the movie, you find a much more interesting personality than "just be nice all the time, even to your abuser!" or "omg he's cute i'm in love". she has sarcasm, wit, emotional endurance, softness, and yes, incredible compassion. she has to hide her personality to her abusers to survive, but she's still there.
    idk, it's really easy to dismiss femininity and softness. the femmes who use traditionally masculine tactics to succeed at their goals are not the only strong femme characters; sometimes strength looks like the emotional fortitude to stay alive with your heart intact.

      I love this response. I've always found Cinderella to be one of the more compelling female leads in a Disney film because yes, she does have this seemingly impossible capacity for compassion despite her circumstances, but she's not completely blind to her situation. She knows her step-sisters and step-mother are utterly garbage people, and I love that in those moments where she is alone in her reality, she'll make a sarcastic or biting comment on them. And I absolutely agree with your comment on the power of affection. As someone who's been in an abusive relationship, you really are ground down to relying on sheer faith and the belief that you'll love again, especially when it comes to regaining the love you have for yourself. There's beauty and romance in that quiet strength you need to push through another day and realize that even if it's only until midnight, you can experience a real connection with someone again and let yourself shine through.

People in the business thought Disney was crazy trying to make a full-length animated movie. He took a huge risk to make it, changing the history of animation/cinema forever! Because it is the first full-length animated film, it earns a top place in the best-animated movies. Just don't build relationships off of it.

      I never can believe how slow people were to pick up on new ideas for technology, even as recently as back in the early 20th century. The public certainly sided with Disney. Meanwhile, I suppose Snow White is supposed to take place in what, the 15th-16th century? What do they expect? 😂

    • @JessAnderson1988
      @JessAnderson1988 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      The criticism people make of Snow White from the point of view of how real relationships are supposed to work annoys me and is colossally unfair. It always seems to be based in ignorance on why the film was made, how it was made, and who made it. It completely ignores the fact that:
      A) It's meant to entertain first and foremost (which all movies are), not be a blueprint for how to live your life. There has never been any point in time where Disney has stated that their films are meant to educate or tell people how to live. Their primary mission statement from the beginning has been to entertain. People who think otherwise are factually and historically incorrect.
      B) As you said, it was the first ever full length animated feature film. They were still in the early stages of the art form, which means there were still things that needed time to be improved. One of these was animating handsome men. At that point they had figured out beautiful women enough to convincingly animate Snow White, but the Prince was difficult for them so he doesn't appear in the film much as a result. The animation for the Prince in Cinderella a little over 10 years later is a huge improvement, but they didn't really have the handsome prince type of character animation perfected until Sleeping Beauty, which was released a little over 20 years after Snow White!
      C) It is a straight up a classic fairytale, told with the same kind of simple story telling that you would see in fairy tale books (which was smart, considering the huge risk making this film was). The filmmakers knew that, and weren't trying to pretend it was anything other than that. For scenes like the wishing well scene, where Snow meets the Prince, they did experiment in the early stages of development of having the Snow and the Prince have a conversation with each other. But ultimately, they didn't feel that it worked, and decided that going with a musical number and a more fairytale approach to the scene would make it more timeless. And quite frankly I think they were right to do that.
      D) Animated films are made by real, regular people, who have real relationships, real dating experiences, and real marriages. Walt Disney himself was happily married for a little over a decade at the time Snow White was released! So the idea that the people who made this film are trying to get a message across that real romance is supposed to look like the romance in Snow White is patently absurd.

      @JessAnderson1988 I agree! Not to mention romance wasn't even the focus of the movie. The Prince was essentially the prize Snow White got for being kind and compassionate and virtuous even when she was subjected to cruelty and abuse by her own family. Not to mention we should consider when this movie came out. Snow White was released during the Great Depression, and it was a reminder of hope and love. Romance wasn't really even the main plot, rather it was about a girl who suffered tremendous abuse and came put stronger and kinder.

    I felt like Eugene didn't so much "come clean" as found someone who he felt he could be comfortable around. I don't think he specifically tried to fool Rapunzel so much as just had a front he presented to the world, and she was just another part of the world at first. Once he got to know her a bit though, he was willing to let the mask slip since he felt he could trust her. I'd consider that notably different from what Aladdin did with Jasmine, even aside from the timing of the reveal.

      I agree. Flynn even sarcastically remarked how trusting him was “A horrible decision really” he never lies to her, and probably felt she’d turn him in once they arrived at Corona. But eventually he learns to open up when it’s obvious she’s counting on him to keep her safe and obviously help her to Corona. I really love the part when she opens up about mother and her hair, he asks “And you’re still going to go back?” genuinely concerned about her as a human after hearing how mother treated her. But I just really love the part when he tries to get around revealing poor orphan Eugene Fitzherbert, she just scoots closer and he chuckled like “Fine, I give up. I get you told me your secret.” And the way his eyes lit up revisiting his childhood memories is adorable and he’s a bit embarrassed about his past, but she actually prefers Eugene Fitzherbert over Flynn Rider. Aww!

    • @keshaartis8365
      @keshaartis8365 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      She didn't "sacrifice her dream to save him". She kissed him as a frog with the expectation that he would immediately return to being human. Her dream was temporarily put on hold bc that same kiss turned HER into a frog. Which, in searching for an actual solution, is what resulted in her spending time with the prince and BOTH of them actually getting to know AND value each other. Which lead to their wedding (still as frogs, mind you) and them becoming human again. Making both of their dreams come true.
      I am fairly certain that this prince (I do not know how to spell his name and I am 99.999% sure my autocorrect would butcher it too) is THE most in-depth personality we see from a Disney prince in a movie. Second, all time, imo, to Prince Charming in Once Upon A Time (series).

    The difference with Flynn and Repunzel is that it isn't "Bad guy turns good for a woman" and more "Bad guy turns good for a friend". Because he changes to be good before there's any romantic intention you can't pin it to the former trope, he changes because for what is probably the only time in his life there is a good person willing to be good, truthful, and accepting to him and considering he's a good person at heart he replicates those feelings and attitudes

    • @damienstadler8919
      @damienstadler8919 2 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      I disagree that he's a bad guy, but I agree with him changing after finding someone who speaks to his good nature. He isn't really a bad guy to start with. He's playacting at being a villain at best; he actually comes off more like a good guy who is also a career art thief because he romanticizes the Robin Hood lifestyle. He's very smart and cunning to have pulled off the heists that he's wanted for, but nice guy who got kicked by the system isn't a real villain. The moment "Flynn Ryder" had something better to do, Eugene popped out and stayed.
      I heard a podcast where they said Ursula from Little Mermaid shouldn't have been killed, she was a victim of Triton's kingdom and shunned for breaking the laws. BUT, if you go through juvie for a felony, get out and start dealing crack outside middle schools (making a real-world comparison to Ursula here), clearly you aren't making life choices that benefit others. Flynn Ryder was little better than a petty thief and changed his ways immediately. Ursula spent 50 years loan-sharking and breaking kneecaps out of spite over someone else's actions.

      @@damienstadler8919 Eugene stole royal jewels and countless other things to make him so infamous. Every villain and bad guy has a reason for being, but Eugene is a good person at heart which is, like I said in my comment, why he changed once he had a relationship of any type with another good person. But that doesn't mean he didn't start out as a bad guy. Ursula was just plain bad, she manipulated and attempted to ruin the life and reputation of a very naive young woman just because of spite against her father. No matter what effects were in her life to cause that those were her choices as reactions to her pain, and even if she couldn't control her pain she can definitely control her reaction. This is also in part true for Eugene, but his reactions didn't involve manipulation and derangement, just thievery to get by and hopefully into a better position in life. Both are bad, one is much worse, and both can change even if only one actually did. But just because they can change doesn't excuse what they did. Even if they did change, they do deserve a second chance but you can't forget what they did as if they never did it.

    I like to read Cinderella's reaction to the prince as her just being so happy to be treated with kindness by another human being for the first time ever since her father died. This girl has been put upon by her step family, has no outside world contact, and whose only friends are mice, birds and her dog. And granted, she was just visited by the fairy godmother, but that was a magical miracle lady whose stated goal is to make Cinderella happy. The prince is just a normal human being with no obligation to make her happy, he just does it because he wants to. 'So This is Love' is her remembering what kindness and respect felt like after years of abuse. This then gets cemented the next day when she learns that not only was that cool guy she danced with the prince, so he REALLY had no obligations to please her, but he's also doing everything in his power to find her again.
    I kinda wish Prince Charming actually did have a personality to match Cinderella's. At the time, Disney didn't put that much effort into their male leads, they just kinda existed to be the way out for our more interesting princesses. I like to imagine that the Prince is also emotionally neglected, so he and Cindy connect over that or something. Something could be done here.

      She starts out that relationship by loosing all of his respect for her, mind you this is bare minimum respect for war cannon fodder, at that point she is literally got less respect than a horse would because at least a horse can be of use in the war.

      Adding to the comments above. I think that although Shang did feel betrayed by finding out Mulan lied to him, the main reason why he kicked Mulan out of the military was because in those times it was basically expected to treat women that way, and as the Commander?/General? (I can't really remember his rank) he had to set an example for his soldiers. In fact, sparing Mulan's life (in the animated movie) was very odd in itself based on the reaction of the... Secretary?/Advisor? Regardless, since Shang didn't really interact with any other women in the animated film, we can't really say for certain what he was thinking after Mulan told him the truth, but I am guessing Shang didn't really care about gender to begin with, just following the rules, training his soldiers, and winning the war with as few casualties as possible. And as such, Mulan earned his respect by training and becoming a strong and dedicated soldier.

    Something it's easy to forget now is that Snow White was one of the first animated feature films EVER. Apparently the Prince was supposed to have a bigger role, but animating two realistically-proportioned humans in the same seen was too hard to do at the time, so he and Snow White couldn't interact much by design.

    • @hana_flower875
      @hana_flower875 2 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Yes! Also Walt Disney himself explained he wanted the focus to be about the relationship between Snow White and the dwarves, that's why it's called "Snow White and the seven dwarves" and not, like, "Snow White and the Prince". The Prince himself isn't to be considered a character, he's more of a plot point (so much so that Alan says his name is Florian but it's not quite it, the Studios had in mind a couple of names and yes, Florian was one of them and the most likely to be chosen, but since his role was small and no one in the movie was meant to address him by his name they didn't bother to actually pick one).

    • @amadhatter13
      @amadhatter13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      I was about to point this out. I wish people would cut Florian more slack. He had some planned scenes of being captured and having to fight to escape and save her. But they literally had to learn how to draw normal humans and it turns out men are harder to draw (which is why Florian has such a baby face) meaning almost all of Florian's scenes had to be cut

      No seriously. People need to back off of Florian. They did genuinely want him to be more in the movie but they couldn’t figure out how to animate him more than they already had. Obviously if it wasn’t the first animated feature film and they had a better understanding of what they would later on, Florian would have played a more active role in the film.

It might just be because I think they’re incredibly cute, or because I’ve seen the series as well as the movie and it expands on them beautifully. It’s also very nice how they don’t get married right away like so many other princesses, but instead take some time, and (especially if you consider the series), she gets to live her own life outside of a romantic relationship without disregarding it, before setting anything is stone. In case you hadn’t noticed, I highly recommend it, they’re far too cute the whole time and it’s pretty well written for a series aimed at children.

That is why she asks him if the man in the story was a thief, too; even though he never outright told her he was or wasn't. He only lied about his name.

    I just realized something about Aladdin. Every single main character is ‘trapped’ in their own way. Aladdin was trapped in poverty and couldn’t escape from it. Jasmine was trapped in rules and laws that shackled and dictated her life and fate. Genie was literally trapped inside a lamp for his entire life. The Sultan was trapped under Jafar’s spell, illusions, lies, and deceptions. Finally, Jafar gets trapped inside the lamp that he created out of his own evil actions, and because of that, everyone is set free from him.

    I ADORE Rapunzel and Eugene’s relationship in the movie. It’s really realistic to each of their goals and nothing feels out of place in terms of characterization.
    Eugene reluctantly agrees to take her to see the lights, but once he realizes how naive she is he tries to scare her away from the real world like Mother Gothel does. Her real personality shines when she turns all these criminals and thugs into singing about what they really want and when they’re ultimately faced with peril, Eugene just doesn’t ditch her to run by himself. I’d argue that while the crown was still his goal, his true nature isn’t one of crime. He just wants to feel as cool as Flynn Ryder. So after working together and ultimately saving each other, he decides to be vulnerable with who he is because as I said, it’s not in his true nature to want to do all the bad stuff he’s doing. He’s secretly longing for something and maybe thinks that thievery will fulfill that longing, but what he truly wants is someone to see him for who he truly is. Someone who appreciates him for being Eugene. Who embraces the fact that he can never be as charming as a book character, yet still likes him. It’s only then does he realize that there is mutual respect and he no longer wants to use her for personal gain. He wants to give up his selfish desire and just make him happy, because seeing the person who truly understands him happy is worth more than any crown. Things turn sideways and she sacrifices herself for him, but he proves that he sees the real HER by cutting her hair off. She’s more than a magical girl and he’s more than an orphan boy. They aren’t defined by their pasts but they can love each other no matter how they appear or act.
    Also the line: “You were my new dream” “You were mine too” will NEVER not make me cry.
    Anyways, thanks for coming to my TEDtalk.

    Prince Florian was supposed to have more screen time by himself and with Snow White. However, this was when frames were hand-drawn so they decided to cut out most of the ideas for his scenes because it was just too much to draw and incorporate into the story. So, we got a very very simplistic story of boy meets girl, boy gets girl, and they lived happily ever after.

    Belle and Beast from the original animation would be interesting. Beast has massive anger issues, almost abusive tendencies, but he recognises that he's got a problem he just doesn't know how to fix it because he's so depressed.
    People dont talk about how depression cna make you so angry. You feel angry because you're stuck and can't change.
    Then Belle comes along, rightfully runs away when she's scared and after Beast saves her, she saves him back, and they have a feisty heart to heart about boundaries. She brings out some of the best in him, and he realises his issues with his selfishness and anger will only drive people away and that he learns from Belle that being kind and gentle without asking anything in return is the key to being a good person.
    Hense the fact he lets her go, when he knows she may never, ever come back and he will be stuck forever as a monster. He gives up his chance of freedom by putting her needs first. He comes a heck of a long way in the film to when he first started and the audience believe that their relationship can work over 90 minutes of runtime. That's incredible!

      @@cchastant8251 I don't think that that's the case with Beauty and the Beast though. Belle fell in love with Beast because of his change in behavior, and it made her see past his appearance. Beast fell for Belle once he saw that she was beginning to look past his appearance. It was far from love at first sight; Beast thought Belle was beautiful but unreachable because he thought she'd never see him as anything but a monster. And in the beginning, that was all that Belle saw in him until he saved her life.
      Plus, if Belle pretended to love Beast just because he had control over her, she would've left him as soon as he made the choice to set her free.

    I just wanna throw in Quasi Modo, Esmeralda and Phoebus for having like the most nontoxic resolution of a love triangle/unrequited love I’ve seen in a movie. Quasi wanted Esmeralda to be happy in spite of his love for her, and he no longer felt the need to idolize her and depend on her affection since he had come to gain the acceptance of those around him. He was happy to see that she was happy, and he was more than elated to still be friends with her, the one who had given him his first experience of genuine human compassion
    Thing is, that’s a super sweet ending. However, from a pretty superficial glance it’s hard for the audience (ESPECIALLY kids) not to feel like Quasi got “slighted” (not saying that’s in any way justified, but it IS a common reaction). So, the way Quasi handles it without any sort of pettiness or bitterness sets a great character example on a moral point Disney Media doesn’t often address, by combatting a somewhat unchallenged idea of “entitlement to sexual love” you see in a lot of media

      You also see the contrast of the feelings the different men have for her. Frollo let his passion and feelings get out of control to the point of committing horrible crimes. Phoebus learned from her and changed his ways, but he still respected her and would have let her go. Quasi loved her, but as you said, he recognized that she was free to be with whomever she loved and he accepted it. He never threatened or pressured her. It shows that we have total control over how we act.

I mean about more than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other. I think humans should just ditch concepts like dating, marriage, and pair bonding. I feel like this world would be a much better place without romance than it is with it.
      In my opinion, romantic love should not be on the highest pedestal. In my opinion, parents and siblings' family love is the strongest. Family knows who you are. Romance is fake for lots of people, put on a false persona and romance on most parts gets ugly real fast. For the reality of romance is no Disney love story.
      Parents and siblings' family love is one of the strongest types of love there is. If romantic love is actually real, it would be one of the weakest types of love there is.

      Studies prove single, childless, women are the HAPPIEST demographic. Women are the happiest when single and focused on themselves.
      Statistically speaking, women are happiest when single and childless in today's times. Also, women can have friends and biological family that they share a life with. We as humans need the presence of other humans in our lives yes. But we can live alone. We don’t need romantic relationships to survive. We do need love and support, but it can be from friends and family. It does not need to be from a romantic partner.
      Studies also show that single women are far happier than their married peers, and that married women lose out in career earnings, career trajectory, health, and life expectancy compared to those single peers as well.
      Married women live shorter lives, and report lower levels of happiness than women who never marry. Single women live longer than married women. Also, according to many studies, women have higher rates of depression when married.

      @@rachelalucard9641 NO! It does not!!!! In that godawful series, Rapunzel is the worst and most toxic girlfriend to Flynn!

    “Relationships dont run on potential.” DAMN. I dated a guy for nearly 4 years because of potential. When we met he was a grad student studying biochemical engineering. He had plans to change the way we farm as a species. We traveled to the seed vault in Norway. We interviewed people at the rice institute in the Philippines. He was driven and wanted to change the world. By the end, it had been 2 years of him just smoking pot, playing video games, and coasting on his parents fortune. Once it finally clicked he wasnt the same person anymore, i had to mourn the person i fell in love with/thought he was or was going to be. What i thought our lives together would be.
    Turns out he did me a big favor considering right after I moved out, a total stranger messaged me to tell me he had been cheating on me with his girlfriend and had knocked her up. Sooo never have to question that decision lol.

If the advice is you would tell that friend to end that relationship then it is probably a red flag. If that advice is they should talk to their partner about it, its probably a normal flaw.
      But i also want to add that sometimes flaws arent red flags, but they are a dealbreaker for an individual. In the example with my ex, the smoking pot/video games didnt bother me - i dont think smoking pot (in moderation and legally) is a bad thing and at the time i didnt know about the cheating. It was the lack of ambition, entitlement, and just overall shift in who i thought he was as a person was the dealbreaker. Someone else might not care about those things in a relationship, so while its a “red flag” for me, it might not be for someone else.
