    How do you figure out what you want in life? Why is it important to face your fears?
    Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are taking a look at princess, icon, and hero, Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia… or just Mia. Mia’s journey from wanting to be invisible to becoming a princess is all about self-actualization, and Jonathan shares what it takes to get there. They rave about acting (and Genovian) royalty, Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, they get PO'd about the cat’s POV, and Jonathan tells a sad (hilarious) story about trying to impress a girl in second grade.

    I love that they softened the Grandma from the original books. In the novels, Grandmere was a chain smoking, cranky old lady who was sharp with Mia. Julie Andrews is so charming and likable, and hard to dislike, so thankfully they made Clarisse more lovable.

    • @MsNanceePants

      The difference of Grandmere vs. Julie Andrews one of the many things I _preferred_ in the books when I read them. But those things just wouldn't have worked in a 2-hour movie--especially one produced by Disney! To me the movie is so different from the books that I don't even compare them; apart from the premise they have very little in common.

      @snorpenbass4196 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +134

      @@MsNanceePants Not to mention that it's kind of far from reality - European nobles and royalty who act that way become famous for it - there's always paparazzi about, and the upper crust kind of have to "maintain appearances" at all times - that said, they can of course be (and often are!) horrible people. But they wouldn't act like it. It'd be more polite and passive-aggressive in public, and nasty in the most polite and well-mannered way possible.

      I don’t even know if it’s possible for Julie Andrews to play character we’re meant to dislike. I mean, she is a fabulous actress, no question about it, but I would feel so wrong about hating her! I’m pretty sure the closest she ever came to being a villain was Gru’s mom in the Despicable Me movies, and she was an absolute delight!

    The inclusion of Fat Louis and his perspective is directorial genius. This is a movie about a royal family and succession and ruling and CATS ARE GODS. Look at this scene. On the subject of that basketball scene... I think there IS some visual importance to seeing that Lilly is sinking every shot. You'll notice that she is speaking her mind honestly, and that after a difficult process, she has finally come to a realization about how she feels about her friend's status as princess. So, just like her words, her basketball shots land "true."
    Then you'll notice that the girls pass the ball between them a few times in this conversation, and this reflects the direction the conversation is going. Lilly makes a shot (mostly in tandem with when she makes a statement), and then Mia catches the rebound and bounce-passes the ball back. Returning the ball not only shows she is still trying to be friendly to her estranged friend, it is also a visual representation of taking the statement and giving gentle feedback. Essentially, it means, "I'm still listening; keep talking." Then when the girls get angry at each other, they chest pass instead of bounce-pass, which visually looks more like the aggression they are feeling.
    Last of all, you'll notice that the one time Mia takes a shot, she misses. Unlike Lilly, who is being sincere, speaking her mind, and knows how she feels, Mia is unfocused, and ultimately --- as she later realizes --- her decision to abdicate her title is wrong. Her words and her shots are not "landing true."
    So, yeah. Maybe it so happens the camera placements are wonky in this movie, but at least the visual storytelling is effective.
    P.S. I'm no filmmaker, but I am paying attention to the camera cuts in that basketball scene. You'll notice there are only two times you see Lilly's whole shot, from follow-through to sinking the basket. You'll also notice that there are camera cuts right before one of these shots is made. So, it's entirely possible they DID do a lot of takes to make sure she was sinking all of these baskets. (I think she still has some skill, though, even if her form is kind of unusual.)

    I think the cuts to the cat are also silly but important. Because the cat is the ultimate reason that Mia finds the letter from her father and is inspired to take the last step of self-actualization. You could see the cat as a spiritual force or familiar to Mia because cats are symbolically so finicky. Or even as a spirit of her father.
    Edit: The wide shots from the cat’s pov also alleviates tense from the audience and gives a sense that the world is bigger than Mia and her own perspective. That there is life beyond being a princess or a normal girl. She has the freedom of a normal girl to think about her future. It gives the “bigger picture”, if you will. Objectively, if the film were filmed without the cat, then the story might feel railroaded.

      Also--when Mia doesn't want to deal with the whole "being a princess" thing, she hides in her tower, like a cat hiding on top of the fridge bc it doesn't want to go to the vet. Her home is like a giant cat tree with the stairs and ladders and the firepole so mia is like a cat (a scaredy cat). Basically, fat Louis is both a mirror and partner to Mia. This is why his perspective is important during such an integral scene

    While I loved this movie a lot as a kid, and I'm still fond of it, looking back, I think it contributed to my unhealthy relationship with my hair. I resonated a LOT with characters like her who had my big poofy curly hair. And to see her perceived as pretty only AFTER she straightened it both hurt and made me feel like I had to straighten my hair to be seen as normal and pretty. Lily is the kind of friend you have when you are a weirdo and have been your whole life. If you're lucky, you find other weirdos and hold on for dear life. The thing about weirdos is that they don't always have social niceties. They're often too loud or too emotional. Lily strikes me as very relatable. Lily loves Mia, but doesn't always know how to express or share that affection and care, so it all comes out sideways. Lily is also more used to being the more outgoing friend, dealing with the most attention. It's really hard when a friendship dynamic shifts like that. Lily is the kind of girl I would have been friends with and, yeah, she wouldn't have stewarded that friendship super well in high school, but maybe it would have really matured in adulthood. So. Maybe don't bash the realistic portrayal of a weird teenage girl?

    I have had very long discussions about Lilly in mostly the first movie. She's not a bad friend she is literally 15/16 years old. We get from a line earlier on that she has a strained relationship with her dad and so she doesn't get why Mia is still upset about the death of a father who was never around. Then when Mia starts ditching her all the time for princess lessons and suddenly changes her whole appearance, she's a teenage girl seeing her best friend change everything about who she, who they have always been. "You're turning into one of them." Teenagers' brains are still developing, so they don't make the best choices. When you watch the sequel, Lilly has had time to grow and change as a person and she's a much better, more supportive friend to Mia. I think another thing for Lilly in the first movie is that I'm sure she knows her best friend has a crush on her brother, and that can make any friendship dynamic weird. But ultimately her outbursts are totally realistic when you look at them through the lens of a 15 year old girl who is seeing her best friend change right before her eyes with no explanation. So many kids especially girls lose their friends in high school, and Lilly is seeing Mia morph into the same girls that have been bullying them for years. And she apologizes in the basketball scene and owns up to her mistakes just like Mia does. I hate how much hate Lilly gets for her reactions.

    Reading some of the comments and I have to say, I’ll always defend Lilly! People forget she’s just a teen girl. Lilly has her own issues and being aware of that is great of her. She handled the situation badly, but she’s having to see her best friend pull away from her, keep secrets, and completely change her appearance. She’s just scared that she might be losing her best friend! Give her a break! When push came to shove, she supported Mia wholeheartedly and even helped her see how important of an opportunity she had. She kept her secret and even accepted Mia’s apology for ditching her without telling her for a sleazy guy. Lilly’s a good friend, I think people just don’t like her personality. Someone called her self absorbed but like… who isn’t at that age?

      exactly my thoughts!! Thank you!
      If I was her, if I was Lilly, I would've felt the same fear, the same envy because Mia had the chance of a voice and not taking advantage of it. She never wished for what Mia had, she just wanted Mia not to take things lightly. Why did she wanted her on her TV show? Not because of fame, it was because of the influence it could have and tell people to save animals. Was that a bad thing? I think not
      At the end, she never wanted to take advantage of Mia, like the bullies actually did, Lilly was hurt obviously, because of the betrayal. And again, if I was her, at her age, I would have acted the same...

    • @RaiderGamerSpice
      @RaiderGamerSpice 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +56

      Exactly this! Whenever I watch reactions to TPD, I always anticipate the reactors to just look at Lilly's character at face value and say "She's a terrible friend, she's so mean!" Probably only one reaction (The Movie Budz) actually understood that the way Lilly handled Mia's situation was, while still not the best, completely understandable. Like, imagine being Lilly, and having a best friend glued to your hip since childhood, then all of a sudden, that friend starts flaking on you without telling you why for several days, and then one day that friend shows up looking like the school's main bully, again with no explanation. How exactly was Lilly supposed to handle that? Honestly, this movie does handle teenage friendships quite realistically because both Mia and Lilly had bad friend moments, but they at least both made up for it. And while Lilly saying she needs an attitude adjustment doesn't automatically excuse her behavior, it at least shows she's aware that it's affecting her friendship with Mia and wants to do better. In short, like you said, Lilly is a good friend. She just handled things the way a teenage girl could realistically handle it, and maybe that's why most people don't like her. She's too real lol.

She has to push past her own misgivings, take actual steps to learn on the job what being a ruler will entail AND face down the possibility of whether she can marry for technicality sake in order to do what she really wants. 1. I love the chaos energy of this episode
    2. I think it says a lot about her as a person, that Mia is a literal high schooler during this movie and ends up in the place that she does. Yes, she doesn't know what she wants, and yes, she doesn't have ambitions, but in large part, that's because 99.9999% of the experience of being an American teenager is being in the no-man's land between trying for emotional self-sufficiency, and still trying desperately to please everyone around you. Parents, friends, strangers--everyone is having an impact on you. I think a large part of maturing as you're entering your twenties, is realizing that you're even ALLOWED to be your own person.

    • @MrBrock314
      @MrBrock314 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think this is a cultural thing. I'm from Canada and I'd say that's typical here too but I don't think it's typical overseas and it's definitely not typical in previous time periods. In many cultures, you're an adult long before 18 (like Hebrews (14), Latino culture (15), etc) so the expectations are quite different. Also, historically many people took leadership positions in their mid-late teens. Notably, Alexander the Great was 14 when he led his army to victory (for the first time, he was 18 when he began conquering a large chunk of the known world and was done by 30) and Cleopatra was 18 when she became Queen of Egypt. Augustus Caesar was 17 when he was going to join Julius' legions. Galileo entered medical school at 16 and started his scientific observations/work at 17 while still in school.
      More recently, Malala was 11 when she started blogging against the terrorists in her home area. Emma Gonzalez (of Marjorie Stoneman school shooting fame) was a high school senior when she became an advocate for new gun laws and Greta Thunberg was 15 when she began her environmental protests and a global environmental activist by 16.
      So, even in the modern day, teenagers are capable of becoming international leaders if given the right support.

As I watched this episode, I thought about other movies starring Anne Hathaway and of course The Devil Wears Prada came to mind and I was about to type the comment with the same suggestion for an episode. Personally I think they're all "villains" - her so called friends which enjoy the perks (as in, luxurious gifts) of her being an upscale fashion magazine employee but treat her like trash the rest of the time, her "caring" boyfried which makes her feel guilty about her wanting to pursue a career and Miranda herself who is, to say the least, violating her boundaries on numerous occasions. I did enjoy Meryl Streep's performance but the ending (which basically tried to sell you that her trashy boyfriend was right) was a huge disappointment.

    Doesn’t the cat lead Mia to find the letter from her dad that helps her make the right choice in the end? Maybe using the cat’s POV during Mia’s conversation with her grandmother was actually a deliberate implication that the cat can understand their conversation, sympathizes with Mia’s predicament, and wants to help? Maybe it drew her attention to a clue that would give her courage _on purpose._ It is a Disney film, after all, and most Disney princesses have an animal sidekick that assists or comforts them in times of need, so maybe the seemingly misplaced focus on Mia’s cat wasn’t misplaced at all, but more of a subtle nod to that “Disney princess animal sidekick” trope. But much like the rest of the movie, it’s portrayed in a semi-realistic way that could actually happen in the real world (your cat understands more of your distress than you realize and decides to draw your attention to a certain thing that will make you feel better by sitting on it) as opposed to more fantastical princess movies where anthropomorphic singing, talking mice might sew a dress for you or bring you the key to your locked room.

    Lilly never seemed to be the best friend to Mia. While she was rightfully furious over Mia ditching her for the proper crowd, she tells Mia that she needs to "get over" her dad's death after two months, when it takes some people longer to come to terms with loss than others. But then I read that in the books, he's not even dead, only sterile due to an operation, which means he can't have any more children, which makes Mia the sole heir to the throne. If this is true, could this be the reason people seem so callous in the movie, because the death was just an afterthought to the story?

      I remember how sometimes, we as teenagers tend to say things like that to our friends because we're emotional, and we just need to let it out... yet we don't actually intend on doing so; we're just expressing how angry we are. Even things like "get over it" are made in relative self-absorbed moments, because we don't have the maturity to handle such things as adults do. We're not dealing with our emotions at that age; we're still merely acting upon them in many cases
      ^Taking it at face value is the definition of a mistake, because that's looking at it with adult perspective. Most teenagers say such things without thought, for better or worse, and we've all had moments like that in hindsight were just us being awful people... and yet, we still managed to get through things somehow. So I say we should have a bit more sympathy/empathy for such, regardless of whatever objective flaws the film might have in presenting it

      Olden-day torture was the infliction of pain to do things like acquire information or just because one was mean.
      Inflicting pain as part of the punishment was considered a different thing on the societal level.
      For example, when I was young, corporal punishment (the strap at school or spanking at home) was not at all considered torture. But by the current definition, it sometimes counts. It depends on your definition of "severe" pain whether it fits the torture definition.
      Under the current definition, technically many forms of speaking could be considered torture if you include mental pain or emotional pain. Heck, school and chores could be considered torture by some under that definition.

    I truly think that when we get long shots on animals or random things that often bug grown men in movies, the director knew that the scenes would be a little intense for kids and it acts as almost a comic relief, or a sensory relief. My kids always cover their ears or eyes or look away during emotional, scary, or sad scenes. They want to watch the movie, but their natural instinct is to re-align their senses. So when we get those random or irrelevant shots in kids movies, especially during points of tension, I think it is because the directors understand that kids need that relief. So when Mia and her grandmother are discussing emotional things, and Mia is basically telling her, "I can't, its too hard, I give up" on the whole plot of the movie, it feels heavy. Louis being there to watch over Mia and always sitting near or with her during emotional moments makes kids feel more comforted. That's my opinion. You see it often in kids movies.

This movie meant a lot to me because, as far as fictional characters went, I was most similar to Mia - the social anxiety, the painful shyness, the bad posture, even the frizzy hair! What I found most inspiring about the conclusion of the film is not the fact that she chose to become a princess, but she overcame her fears and learned to not only give a public speech, but also stand up for herself. It's this character growth that gives this movie so much heart! The physical comedy and princess shenanigans are a bonus.

    I like the fact that they treated Louie like he was an active character in the story and not just ' the pet'.

      Wow! You made my day by your wee comment. 😌
      Loved this. Fun, entertaining, packed with encouragement. I feel I always get at least one “Aha” moment watching this channel.
      BTW - Methinks Garry Marshall was one of those people who anthropomorphized animals. Probably not the best for a director. But it’s why fans remember _Fat Louie._ He’s like Fred Mertz in a cat body. 😂

    The thing with the cat is, in original books he's very important to Mia and have a lot of screen (well, page) time :D So it's not just a cat, it's a character and of course he will need his own POV.
    UPD: just remembered that his name is Fat Loui, it's important :D

    I love that you chose to focus on Self-Actualisation as that was Mia's obsession in the books and I love that Alan calls Lilly out as a bad friend because in the books she is literally the worst best friend in literature.

    Love the two movies. Fun fact the queens assistant is Gary Marshall's daughter...her character is Charlotte Kutaway. Literally becuase when he needed to cut a way in a scene he cut to her.

    please consider a couples therapy with the second movie. I love the "enemies to lovers" trope they went for. But I feel like a lot more insight with their relationship could be buried that I wasnt aware of. great video ♥

    Thank you guys for covering Queen Mia, I love this series so much and hella integral to the development of my personality. Mia is such a great role model cos she's like me, a girl who's trying to do her best.

    Not only does Alan have a very valid point that the second movie's point is Chris Pine, it also has my favorite Stan Lee cameo.

    Princess Diaries is genuinely one of my favorite movies. It’s a comfort movie for me on bad days and the book series is very close to my heart as well. So happy to see you cover the movie!

    I tell myself quite often that the fear I feel over doing something and getting it wrong won't last nearly as long as the regret of not doing it at all. I admit, sometimes I don't take my own advice. So I have regrets, BUT I have fewer than I would otherwise.
    We must thank Robert Pine and Gwynne Gilford for the beautiful gift that is Chris Pine. We appreciate it lol

    Okay, I admit it, I loved the shot of the cat. It was just so interested in what they were saying! And it was cute. For all we know, it was Garry Marshall's cat, and this was his tribute. (Also, I laughed out loud a moment later at the cat's-eye view -- and laughed louder at Alan's absolute despair over it! In a nice way!) This was really fun and cute, as always -- great job, guys! I needed the smiles today -- and the inspiration.
