      Most plywood decking is at or around 1/2 inch.
      Remember to install the plywood in the proper direction (perpendicular to the rafters).
      You got this!

      Did you tackle it? Also curious if you attempt to notify HO insurance? Home Warranty? Or just did it yourself?
      New home owner 3mos in and inspections never note roof issue and this was exactly what I found when I went into the attic.
      Strong wind and heavy rains for last three days probably weaken the nails and lift I’m assuming.
      Also curious if any permit or note you did for future prevent care now that it’s repair

      @jacksonphan5870 In most cases such as this video. The cost to do this roof repair is typically under the homeowners' insurance deductible, which may not make sense to submit or file an insurance claim.

    Just found your channel today! I've been preparing myself to fix the incredible gross negligence of the home builder that made my house in th 1980s.. my roof is a disaster. I didn't care as much when I had help but now as a Widow, it's my job to keep things safe and working. Your videos are seriously so cut and dry, right to the point that it's easy to follow!! Thank you for this!

    I have been watching so many roofing videos...this one makes sense. My exhusband built a storage shed and instead of making a good strong roof, he put roof coating only lasted about 3 years. Now, he is not around so I have to come in and do the roofing myself. The roof on the shed is exposed to south Arizona climate strong sun and monsoons in the summertime. I need to fix the roof quick before the monsoons come again. Well, thanks for this video it helps what I need to do next.

    Thank you for this . Wile checking last week, I have 3 areas I need to do this. I did notice previous owner did not use Plywood, They used partical board where the soft spot is. Also seen my gutter is not installed with a small slope for water. The water built up and the partical board soaked up water , turned to mush. Glad I seen this , still can salvage shingles . Great video. An idea for another video is venting caps fir the top of roof line. Thinking to add them . That would be very cool to see. Thanks from Canadas rainy Vancouver Island

    Thank you for the video, good job. One thing that would have helped me is to know why your repair plywood is so large with respect to the damage area. You went above the vent pipe and spanned three rafters, where as the hole was below the vent and just between two rafters. I'm sure your way is correct, but as a non pro I don't know why the repair was so large. Also, when you said "this area" I don't know what part of the country you are in, so the state name would have helped me understand the context of your comment.

    • @AurumRoofing
      @AurumRoofing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jack, thank you for your comment it's very much appreciated. The reason why I jumped to the next rafter and above the pipe is because it's very difficult to see in the video but the water damage expanded past the first rafter and a bit over the pipe (just by a few inches). It might of been fine not to jump that far over but for instructional purposes I wanted to makesure our viewers learn how to do things the right way rather then a half step repair. #Pflugerville,Texas #CentralTexas

    Does the thickness of the new plywood always have to be the same as the old, so that it's flush with the surrounding area? What if the old is a different thickness that they don't use anymore, like skinny wood shingles, or a plywood thickness you can't get at the store? Did you have to inspect the hole (which is decayed anyway and the thickness can't be determined at that point), find a new spot, measure the thickness, then go to the store with the right wood before you could do the job? I've always wondered about that. It looks like plain plywood, not OSB.

    r video helpful as I am in middle of diy rotten roof decking replacement in multiple areas of my pitched roof especially those areas around several PVC pipes. Previous builders contractor left 4 sq. in. hole in 1/2 in CDX decking around several PVC pipes...I'm for leaving no room in plywood decking around PVC pipe for water to get in...close gap entirely so if shingles fail water will not pour in during flash flood which occurs way too frequent at my house. I work from attic and roof top to avoid further damaging already damaged ridges using drill and jigsaw.

      Hiring an electrician to temporarily remove the mast while you install the plywood (which could be pricey) is the only way to have 1 soild piece of plywood and not having to piece the plywood together.
      The next best thing to do is to cut a U shape in the plywood, wrap it around the pole then use a metal sheet to fill in the plywood gap. Use the sheet of metal as a plywood bandage. Obviously nails won't hold if nailed into the metal so install your nails around the U hole. The pole should be 2" diameter. Cut out 1 two foot long U 2"wide. Hope this makes sense.

    I just found out some leak from the ceiling, some water dipping down just underneath the roof. Well where is the leakage spot? Can you tell me how to find it out?

      Hi Lai. 3 tips. ( I'll make a video for this going more into detail)
      1. Try locating the leak by going in your attic. Look around the pvc pipes or vents these areas are most common.
      2. (This you may need 2 people) If you have an idea of where it's at. Have someone go on the roof with a water hose, turn it on full blast and have the other person go into the attic, makesure the hose guy or gal start from the bottom and work their way up while the other person is in the attic as soon as you see water dripping into the attic let the hose person to stop spraying and ask them to tell you where was there last spraying point. This is why it's very important to spray from bottom to top. Obviously if the leak started all the previous water sprayed area can be ruled out.
      3. If your house is a 2 story? Makesure the leak is coming from the actual roof. It's common to mistake a roof leak when it isn't the roof. If you see a stain on the 1 floor ceiling but not on the second floor ceiling, remember you have plumbing between to two ceilings which means it my be a plumbing leak and not a roof leak. Roof leaks are only going to be seen on the 2nd floors ceiling. This is common when you have small children taking baths in the 2 floor tub and you fill the water past the last upper metal ring the water will automatically drain from there.

    Must a whole 4x8 sheet of plywood be used or can you replace a bad section between studs. Thank you

    • @AurumRoofing
      @AurumRoofing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Obviously the bigger the patch the stronger the structure will be. As long as you have enough to get you between your studs is enough whether a 16" 24" 32" 36" 48" any size will work.
      Great question.

    Can you cut out a section of TPO membrane to get to the under layers of the ply wood?

    what kind/size of mending bracket would you use for a small warp where there is no joist to screw down to? Mine is on the top edge of a plywood sheet. Some guy on youtube is proud of some brackets he made but not everyone can weld to make custom brackets.

    What price range much would most roofers charge to do that job? How much extra is it to stop and go to the store for the right thickness of plywood? Is it more with a steeper roof, like 6/12, as long as they can walk on it without special equipment?
