You can use a 2" hole saw and drill 2 holes in the rafter 6-12 inches below the skylight and 3"from top to vent the dead space area below the skylight on both sides.
I Like to leave few old sheets on to keep the rafters in place while I put install the new sheets. Same deal leaves me something to walk on as well. Especially if the the roof is way out of square. Saves on making slightly angled cuts keeps the seams tight and I don’t have to add any nailers to the rafters. And I staple the baffles to the back of the ply before I lay them.
My roofer said my plywood still looks good and doesn’t need removal. But offered to add in new plywood for my whole roof for $2k. Now I’m beginning to think they are being lazy. You removed the plywood with ease. lol I think I should back out on adding new if it’s still good
Love your videos Dilly. Fellow Ontario Roofing Contractor here. A lot of hacks in the muskoka area would just shingle right over that shit and caulk the hell out of the skylight or go over with 3/8 ply. Good Content!
Nothing average about your work and knowledge!!! Way above average, that’s the only way to rectify that problem you ran into with that roof. Excellent👏👏👏
Dilly is trying so hard to be serious and big times in the background acting a fool 😂... I think everybody knows to just look past him at this point 😂😂😂😂 Big timmeee!!!! Your camera skills are on point better then average 🙌
I enjoyed the video, as I'm stripping a roof this week, and re-decking it with 5/8" sheets. Question about the baffles - what manufacturer and / or supplier? Thank's for the details and the overview as well.
@@Average_Roofer Hi, I don't know if my description will make sense, but the rotten plywood I have to change on a roof is right underneath the point where another roof meets square. Do you have a vid to recommend with this situation?
How to flash it? Bro they just used some stock flashings. Small AF and didn't even have to use steps apparently. Must be nice. EZ af to install and to shingle. Livin' in the future brooo. :D
We have a leak coming through bathroom vent. I removed the boot which didnt seem to have any cracks. It came off rather quickly so the caulking obviously had failed or dried up. Under that area, there was no tar paper and where they changed the sheet of plywood they left a seam of open space about 1/8 of an inch and noticed that the shingles around it were starting to disintegrate. Could the leak have been going through the shingles and trickling down under the plywood even though there were no visible holes? Idk. That would be my guess. Anyways I'm replacing the shingles and ive already laid a new piece of tar paper around the vent pipe. I hope i'll have fixed the problem.
THE REMOTE SHADED SKYLIGHT DYLAN!!! 😂🤣😂 very informative and overall a great video. Not to mention the hilarious upselling hype man Hahaha. If you guys are ever in WI, please do my roof lol
The H-clips are for spacing, yes; to allow for the seasonal expansion of the plywood sheets. If Dilly was concerned about strength he would have used 5/8” plywood and not 1/2”.
Can you do 1/2 in. ply on a roof with a low slope? 1/12 or 2/12 maybe. Or does it need to be 5/8? I've got 7/16 now, but it's old and rotted from having tree limbs sitting on it.
That depends on your local building codes and truss spacing. Most likely you can get away with 1/2 inch though. It also depends on load, does it hold a lot of weight in the winter time etc.
I'll smoke one or two for him. Wish he could come to Tennessee. Fix less than 5 inches on my roofline. And take a trip down the ocoee river on me. This is hard for me. Plus a front birdbox. 🥺
I think I speak for all who would watch this video in saying you're not an "Average Roofer". "Your Expert Roofer" is a better description, but I know modesty is the best policy. Great work all around including production.
As for “upselling”, it would have been better to up sell the roof decking; why go with 1/2”, the minimum, when you could have used 5/8”? For durability (especially in a cathedral ceiling roof (with no attic space) and peace of mind, the customer would have been better served with the stronger plywood.
5/8 should be standard roof decking especially that low of a pitch 2 foot on center and any kind of snow load. Good work with the baffles. Should be a continuous soffit vent, if possible. Average Time!!!
What do you guys do when a roof has been totally iced with that granulated crap? The shingles stick and short of cutting the tabs stripping those and leaving the tops its near impossible to get all the shingle off. Without replacing the plywood all you can do is go over... I use a non granulated ice and water because of this. But its the first thing I look for on a re-roof job. Clients think your nuts when you say they need new ply. Ive been on jobs where they’ve have several re-roofs and there’s 2-3 layers of half shingle stuck to ice and water. Hard to be competitive on those jobs unless its a referral.
We will usually rip the roof off, and let the shingles left on the ice and water bake in the sun for an hour or so and that usually allows them to be lifted. If you can’t get them off at that point you have to either a. Go over them or b. Convince the homeowner that it’s the proper way to replace the plywood sheets. If it’s the entire roof, you must explain how the last roofer incorrectly installed the membrane.
Never smoke on a open roof! Could only imagine a spark from fallen ash from your cigarette to land and spread in that isolation. But that's what you get for an "average roofer"
You can smoke on a roof but please put the buds in your belt. And most importantly never, ever smoke when you have exposed fiberglass (really flammable)
What if you went to do just that. And then your roof had ply board on ply board? And your rafter tails where all rotten. And you cannot get through more front boards cause they're too hard to cut. And you cannot scab on to them. Then what? Sigh* Just curious.🤔
Good video, but dude, fix your audio. I could barely hear you one moment and then had my ears bleeding the next. Just wear a small mic on your collar. Easy fix and will help viewers come back. You have really good content, but horrible sound consistency will force me to Nope out faster than almost anything else.
Great video but very surprised to see no safety gear for fall arrest, would not let you do my roof. Don't come and work in BC, you'll be fined before you know it and out of the business.
You can use a 2" hole saw and drill 2 holes in the rafter 6-12 inches below the skylight and 3"from top to vent the dead space area below the skylight on both sides.
That is excellent advice! Thanks for sharing!
I find it easier to resheath taking a few sheets at a time to always have a safe place to walk on this way you dont end up in the attic!!👍👍
I Like to leave few old sheets on to keep the rafters in place while I put install the new sheets. Same deal leaves me something to walk on as well. Especially if the the roof is way out of square. Tony Keller thank you! I really appreciate comments like this!
Thank you for your detailed explanations. Loved it❤
NEVER 1/2 PLYWOOD 5/8 OR 3/4 TUNG- GROVE IF THE OWNER WILL PAY THE PRICE. YOU DO GREAT WORK KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDEOS
Show how you cut those vent holes in the plywood would help a lot. Great video
Baffles??? Brilliant! first roofer I've sen use those. Thanks for the tip.

Love your videos man!!
I dont do alot of roofs maybe 3 or 4 a year but was taught to use cap staples or cap nails on underlayment. Do normal roofing nails work just as well?
Colby Thomas we use regular roofing nails if we plan to cover it with shingles that same day. Check local building codes first though.
Does a roof replacment permit cover the decking and possible truss repair as well ?
I enjoyed the video, as I'm stripping a roof this week, and re-decking it with 5/8" sheets. Question about the baffles - what manufacturer and / or supplier? Thank's for the details and the overview as well.
Durovent 22-inch x 4 ft. Rafter Vent - Available at home depot.
@@Average_Roofer: Great - thanks! And you modified these for your use on the roof in this video - I love it. Stay safe up there... !

That's awesome using 16 inch on center baffles on 24 inch center roof

if the decking didnt have dry rot but was still 3/8" would you just deck over the old with 1/2"?
I would never deck over plywood with plywood. Always better to remove and replace decking.
Hi, for a roof decking 1/2 in 4x8 plywood works? How about osb? Thank you!!
The whole video you just hear bdr in the backround laughing and screaming bigggg timmeeeee lmao
Holmes on homes has nothing on you bro. Good video direct to the point .
What type of nails do you use for the DuPont roof protector?
Next roof i need im calling u guys bigggg timeeeeeeee
Good video dilly!
Cool song pick to play on your roofing video.
nice wood work
Great content 💪🏾🙏🏾
great music! during the time lapses

About to do the little edition on my house. Didn’t know about the H clips, I assume they are for expansion? And probably a must yeah?
H clips are for the space where he showed the plywood was weak in beginning it strengthens the plywood between trusses
The H-clips are for spacing, yes; to allow for the seasonal expansion of the plywood sheets. If Dilly was concerned about strength he would have used 5/8” plywood and not 1/2”.
Why do you use a hatchet?
Do you use the sharp end?
Can you do 1/2 in. ply on a roof with a low slope? 1/12 or 2/12 maybe. Or does it need to be 5/8? I've got 7/16 now, but it's old and rotted from having tree limbs sitting on it.

Can you just leave the old decking in place and install the new deck on top?
what happened to you saying to put underlayment over the ice shield so it will be easier to remove the shingles when its time to replace the roof?
2ft o.c should always get 5/8 ply. You working solo?
Might not be the best idea to smoke while doing that.... Highly flammable lol
Ha ha I thought exactly the same👍👍

8d common - 2 1/2 inch nails.

Why is there insulation between the rafters of this cold roof
Hey Dilly! I’m in Barrie and have a roofing question. What’s the best platform to reach you on?
Tim Hortons cup I see! I go to Tim's everyday!! I'm from buffalo ny! Hby?
Ryan Puleo right across the border in the Niagara Region, Ontario
Your Average Roofer oh shoot! So close

Amazing to those of us with soft hands that you guys never use gloves. Being "average" in the roofing game is superior. Stay average my friend>>>

I was about to say I tought no 1/2 inch could go in a roof
How do you feel about roofers that screw in decking?
Screwing does work however screws don’t have the same shear strength as nails do. We prefer nails over screws and staples.
great vid from a canadian boy. please stop smoking, you'll live longer.
5/8 should be standard roof decking especially that low of a pitch 2 foot on center and any kind of snow load. Good work with the baffles. Should be a continuous soffit vent, if possible. Average Time!!!
Should be..... but that’s not code. And look at the prices of plywood this year lol
I would have never put that skylight back in. They are the worst cause of leaks known to man.
If they are installed incorrectly yes. I’ve worked on skylights that have been installed for 15+ years.

When I was roofing we had a rule that we never smoked on the roof. Can you guess why?
Some idiot caught the roof on fire. We always have extinguishers on site. But you’re right. Probably shouldn’t smoke on the roof.
Be careful when working on high
That BDR seems like a problem.
You should fire him.
Seems intoxicated.

Fucking hate safety man stand coming out and give tickets 🎫
Fucking head on it
What is the best fasteners for synthetic felt paper? Looked like roofing nails where used in the video.
Cap nails are best, we use standard roof nails only if it will be covered with shingles the same day!
If we cover same day we use a t50 slap stapler cheaper than using up a few coils
