I share your skepticism on "I used to be an atheist stories".
For an "extreme atheist", I notice she didn't speak much on why she considered herself an atheist.
It seems from this small glimpse of her, that she had an experience that made her feel better. Powerful emotional experiences seem to top the list for why people convert to Christianity.
Taking a nice woman praying for her, and turning her into an angel, seems odd and unneeded. Is the Christian God not acting through its believers anymore? I guess I can share skepticism that intercessory prayer works, but I had the impression that she was supposed to believe in that now.

I explained that even as a non-LGBT, meat-eater, and theist myself (a pagan, but I didn't mention that on her video), her comments were insulting nonetheless, as some of my best friends are atheist and I have a sister and other family members who are vegan, all of them wonderful people. As an ICU nurse, this story just saddens me. This is a scared young person, one who has been forced to consider her own mortality and instead of embracing death as a necessary and important aspect of life, she shied away from it with a God story. I get it. I've watched hundreds of people die in my career, some younger than her, and the very vast majority of people haven't come to grips with the fact that they will die at all. I've had Crohns disease for about 24 years, give or take. I can fully attest that her description is accurate. I've hurt so bad I couldn't take normal breaths. And though it is true that you don't die from the disease, it is also true that you die from your immune system reacting to the disease. I've had 2 surgeries due to Chrons. I shit blood on the regular because of ulcers in my intestines. I've nearly died 3 times. Like, quarantined in ICU while my organs were shutting down. I've also nearly died from the medication used to save my life when my organs were failing. My body literally tries to kill me if I don't take immunosuppressant drugs. So you popping up how people rarely die from Chrons is painting the wrong picture. I don't believe you would do that intentionally, however, which is why I wanted to make this my first comment. No ill intent at all, just a more informed perspective. The disease itself isn't deadly, but the complications it causes are very serious, very painful, and yes, deadly.
That being said, I've never once in all my excruciating pain been visited by an angel, a god, a demon, or anything else I would term outside the realm of science and nature. I can say, however, that the pain meds they give you are top notch and it is very possible she was so stoned out of her mind that she thought this stuff happened.

I will beg for morphine as much as I can before they have to taper me off due to risking dependence. For Crohn's it's far worse than UC because the disease can also be in the small intestine, so they have to remove as little as possible resulting in multiple surgeries.
I can say that I was targeted multiple times by "hospital missionaries." I think it's a little sick to target people when they are at their most hopeless. I did have a chaplain come and just listen, and that was nice, but that was an exception to the rule.

When someone says “I used to be an atheist but now I believe in God and JC”, yeah, you can be sure they have never been atheists.

I love how this story suggests that the doctors, who presumably were actively treating this patient, were bewildered at the idea that this patient would start getting better

I love how sh3 claimed she was magically healed, only to admit she's still in pain & fooked, but now she pretends like she's saved. I'm in a similar shit boat, but I never pretend.

In the old testament god required animal sacrifice. So it fits. Kosher slaughter is cruel. As a vegan I am against slaughter in general. But Kosher and Halal are worse. I can't be the only Jew against it.

Some people have "evangelical" personalities. Before I was a Christian I evangelised for poor persecuted marijuana. Then I became a Christian and evangelised in the usual sense of the word. Then I became an atheist and evangelised for atheism and sexual liberation. Now I'm Green. And just recently I caught myself starting to evangelise for the therapeutic use of psychedelics...

It's like getting a new car, and suddenly seeing your car everywhere. Human brains do strange things when stressed. It's too bad she's turned to the supernatural, and feels like she's a terrible person because she's a *vegan*. So sad.

I think the thing that bothers me the most about this sort of testimony is the implicit assumption that if you are a non-believer, you have never - truly - "given God a chance."
They will not accept both that you are honest and that you are unconvinced after genuinely seeking.

I was an extreme Christian too! Prayed the sinners prayer as a young adult, went to a conservative bible school, taught and preached in church (my conservative church was sufficiently liberal to let a woman do all that). After almost 20’yeard I deconverted because to dedicate your life to something for which there is zero evidence, I couldn’t do it anymore. The year after I was diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disease. I thought about reconverting for about 5 seconds. I haven’t prayed a single prayer, not even in my worst, most painful moments. Too much experience praying, fasting and having vigils for cancer and heart parients, alcoholics and drug addicts, the troubled, poor and unemployed, with zero results. What a waste of time and sleep. Thanks scientists for my medicines that are doing a pretty good job so far.

I don't have Crohn's Disease so I can't speak to whether or how it affects mental health. But I do suffer from a condition that has meant living with chronic pain for the last several decades.
And yes, chronic pain, regardless of its source, does affect mental health. I've dealt with a fair amount of depression because of it. But knowing the cause of it at an intellectual level has helped me to find ways to live with it so that I'm able to function well in the world and have no suicidal thoughts. I know the cause and can use that to my advantage because I am a rational person and do not mistakenly attribute phenomena to supernatural causes when they actually have natural causes. Understanding the natural causes I am then able to address them head on, more efficiently and successfully.
This is also why I don't dance in circles wearing a white robe during dry summers, trying to convince the rain gods to give us rain during a drought.
And this is why I respect the help I can get from modern medicine, such as vaccines, because I'm rational.
And this is why being rational is a life or death matter. Practice being irrational and it's easier to get talked into doubting things such as the efficacy of vaccines ... with fatal results.
