I too am 77 years old and when I was in my teens, and the Beatles were king over here in the uk. I was listening to the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson was a genius ! I am still digging up old albums that have committed to CD. The Beach Boys concert is one of my favourites. It was live from the Civic auditorium in Sacramento ! For me - they were my favourites from the sixties !
1st concert was at the mem.auditorium when they happened to record the live album... incredible, loved them so much...my nephew and I, sat way up on the side and sang every song...RIP Wilson bros. And thank for the misic.....
The Beach Boys were about the beach early on in their career, but they are at the pinnacle of Harmony groups. Brian Wilson, their founder, is by many considered to be the musical genius of this era.
the whole "pet sounds" album was revolutionary.it wasnt the "usual" beach boys sound.but extremely introspectful.a good album to listen to when your down in the dumps.MANY dont like it because of that reason.but i think its brilliant.& solidified my belief brian wilson was & is a musical genious.
Went I 12 old , in 1964 the hole family went on a summer vacation. It's was Pensacola Florida, my ante Gail was playing the Beach Boys all day long, she made me dance with her, every body was dancing to the Beach Boys music, eating fresh fish, picking oranges on the trees, swimming in the ocean, playing in the white sand. I will never forget it.
Brian Wilson went into the studio with an orchestra and put together the basics of this album almost single handed. He didn't add the rest of the band till later. Absolute genius.
I grew up with The Beach Boy's music & had a lot of their records. Brian Wilson was the genius songwriter of the group. They span many decades but I love their early stuff from the 60's-70's. Their music conveys such happy innocent days of youth (surfing, cars, romance). They had tons of hits such as "Surfin' U.S.A.", "Surfin' Safari", "I Get Around", "California Girls", "Help Me, Rhonda", "Barbara Ann", "Sloop John B.", "Fun Fun Fun", "Little Deuce Coupe", "God Only Knows", "In My Room", "Good Vibrations" etc.
Great reaction, thanks. I grew up in Southern California and they were a big hit there. When I went to the beach at night we had a party and played them over and over.
Beautiful reaction, Sarah! ❤ Yes, it's a phenomenal tune .. one of many from the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album, which The Beatles said prompted them to up their game when it came to recording "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." 😁 A couple other gems from the same Beach Boys album are "God Only Knows" and "Good Vibrations." 👍
From that first (real;) bass drop, this was & is one of the best songs out there! Thanks for bringin' Our Boys back around the block! 🎵 "Wish we didn't have to wait so long!" 🤞
Interesting fact. The only member of the band that actually used a surfboard and actually surfed was the drummer, Dennis Wilson, Brian's brother. The irony is he drowned after an all day alcohol binge
That's not correct - FM had been in existence for some time, and I remember as a 16 year old in 1966 listening to what was called an "underground" station on FM which played all kinds of genres within one program. You could hear The Beatles, John Coltrane, Bach, Love with Arthur Lee, Hank Williams, Muddy Waters, and on and on. That station shaped the way I've listened to music ever since - across all genres from all over the world.
@@barrycowan3540 I stand corrected. Research tells me that it was quite expensive to own back in the late 50’s and early 60’s. By the late 60’s you could buy an FM tuner for like $50-$60. I first heard FM back in 1968. It was, like you said, pretty much album oriented. That’s when I heard the Moody Blues album “In Search of the Lost Chord”. We are pretty close age wise. I was 15 in 1966. Again, I stand corrected.🙂↕️
@@chrisjenkins6120 Actually FM broadcasting has been around since abt 1940 or so. It didn't really get much listenership till after WWII and frequencies where changed from what was known as the FM50 band to the FM100 band which is what we use now. So we are talking 1946-47 for the 1st FM broadcast sets. Stereo didn't come along till the early '60s even though stereo recording had been around several before.

You’ve likely heard snippets just being out in the world, and it’s almost certainly been used in films - this is one of their best and most beloved tracks. I was only 11 in 1965 and I liked but didn’t follow them - they were certainly on the airwaves so I heard them everywhere. Years later -I don’t remember exactly, I was 17-22 -I was walking Miami beach and walked by someone playing them loudly: I suddenly “got them” like a bolt of lightning, recognising their genius at expressing what it FELT like to be alive in that moment in American culture. Your emotional reaction was exactly right, one has to let go of skepticism and cynicism and be open to joy and the optimism of youth especially. This is a great illustration how pop was mostly aimed at teenagers then: a high schooler wishing he and his girlfriend could live together, imagining their happy future 🥰
Beach Boys have always made me happy and FAV song is Kokomo! It made an impact in my childhood brain that would go off to daydream land of beautiful tropical island with crystal clear water resting on a beach sipping a piña colada as waves slowly crash onto shore 🏝️, feeling a million miles away from anything I’ve ever known in my life experience. It will happen ❤ I think bc the song starts off wi/Aruba start & chorus: “Aruba, Jamaica, ohh I want to take ya, Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama, Key Largo, Montego, Baby why don’t we go, we’ll get there fast and then we’ll take it slow, that’s where we want to go, way down in Kokomo” Aruba is one of my three destination goals in my life. Kokomo is a pretty above unusual catchy dreamy tune but it’s a song that is written in a way that names a place that doesn’t exist but drops names & imagery of tropical islands but if you really listen, they are never specific and that’s intentional so YOU can have to island getaway fantasy that you come up with and it is dif for everyone (My other 2 of 3 bucket list places are Paris, France and see the little towns I don’t ever hear about. Meet the people. Have some wine and Egypt, must see pyramids of Giza and so many more amazing astonishing parts of our human history with such mystery to this day)
You need to watch the movie 'Love and Mercy'. It's about the pressures Brian Wilson was under to create hit music and led to his drug abuse, depression, and manipulation.
You probably heard this song in the movie "50 First Dates" (with Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore). Drew Barrymore's character sings this song very loudly and exuberantly while she is painting her mural on the wall!❤💛💚
I know it's a losing argument but I think It's either you love it or you hate it. It's a bit too much throw away material in there for me. It was a mistake not to include Good Vibrations, one of the greatest songs of all time on it. That might have changed it for me But even then still a stretch.
Please do more Beach Boys! Some suggestions: “I Can Hear Music”, “Sloop John B”, “Do It Again”, “Sail On Sailor “, “Help Me Rhonda”………can’t go wrong! 😁😉👍
My first experience with The Beach Boys was a prize for winning a contest I received The Beach Boys Greatest Hits LP. I was a kid then and hearing them always brings me to that memory. I wore that album out. Thanks for this reaction Sarah.
Nice! When you're ready for more from The Beach Boys check out "Don't Worry Baby", "I Get Around", "Help Me, Rhonda", "Surf City", "Catch a Wave", "Fun, Fun, Fun", and their masterpiece, "Good Vibrations" (if you haven't already).
You can hear how the Beatles were influenced by these guys...well, Brian's production values. This was pretty amazing for back then and for this type of music.
Glad you enjoyed this song.I was a mere child in the 60s but can say I enjoyed being a child back before what we are exposed to today. I can only pray American wakes up and one day finds out again its greatest investment should be American again!
Do you like THE BEACH BOYS? So I recommend you listen to "God Only Knows" and "Good Vibrations" which, according to THE BEATLES, are the two most beautiful songs to have been composed (by the brilliant Brian Wilson) and recorded since the beginning of pop rock. Three groups revolutionized the sound of pop rock to the point of becoming references, the 3B's: - THE BEATLES - THE BEACH BOYS - THE BEE GEES Three sound signatures that have become timeless.

There's a reason the Beach Boys are often considered the greatest American band of all-time. I am not sure how they could NOT be considered that.
