I appreciate you giving us truck drivers a shout out. Yeah it does suck out here and we have a clock that we have to abide by. When we see a van like yours with the park lights on overnight or some little glimmer of light on the window, we always know that at least one person's found a safe place to park. You might end up waking up with 15-20 semi trucks behind you because you showed us where to park.
what do you guys think about using parking lights? i cant decide if they are better or worse for safety. certainly worse for stealth camping. thoughts?
@@docshardy I'd use them if you feel like it helps for visibility. I use them on it as needed basis because I don't want to replace lights overly often.
I make this trip a lot. Coalinga rest area is only an hour South of the one that was closed. It smells from the cows nearby though. I usually stay at Buttonwillow rest area which is another hour or so after that.
Good for you Brad for being aware and courteous to the truck drivers. Not all “four wheelers” think the way you do. I’m a former driver and let me tell you it’s appreciated! Until the next leg of your trip…. Jay
2:25 FYI Milp itas PD. Goes hard in this area. A lot happens this area. Most likely your in their data base. As UC MPD goes around at night documenting plates in both parking lot.
14:20 When parking next to a Semi DO NOT pull al the way into the space and park at the front, because that will only annoy the driver who attempts to pull in behind you and then has to reverse out and go elsewhere. Best park so that your vehicle is immediately visible, when he sees the space. Then if he decides to park in front of you that is his decision and at least he knows that you are parked behind him.
Hi Nomad Brad! I was at TinyFest SJ and attended your solar presentation (very informative btw), looked up your solar company, saw you had a YT so gave you a sub! Watching your thoughtfully-crafted videos capturing ‘real-time’ your #nomadlife adventures is inspiring, thank you for that! I’ve been a part-time digital nomad for a while, soon to be full-time doing the #trailerlife and traveling across this great nation, so videos like yours are helping me get ready for it mentally. I ran into the rest stop closure problem on I-5 last week while heading to SoCal for a camping trip so I feel your pain! Safe travels the rest of the way south 🙌
Hey Brad, I'm really enjoying your videos. Learning a lot from your built, use of Google map to find a place to park and sceneries i never existed here in California
Leaving the south bay late in the afternoon, TRAFFIC! Thousands of people commute from Hollister, Gilroy, Salinas, and Los Banos (other side beyond the San Luis Reservoir). Can be an accident on any of those rural routes used as bypass. Midway stop on I5 is Harris Ranch. Has a small airport, many Tesla Superchargers. My guess that you will head east off I5 towards Bakersfield?
You got stuck in commuter traffic. People in that area commute from Hollister, Los Banos, and Santa Nella areas to Gilroy and other parts of the Bay Area. I have traveled on Hwy 152 many times. That is the Highway that many people in the San Joaquin Valley take when they want to go to Monterey California.
The same reroute thing happened to me as well. I think what happens is Google reroutes everyone and then a road not meant for that much traffic gets too much traffic and then another accident happens.
That stretch of country road with the accidents is Pacheco Pass and since I was a little boy, it's always been treacherous - lots of accidents and and stay alert as parts of it are actually pretty intense to drive with a truck. Nice that you are so considerate about the truckers. True, they are legally mandated to stop designated amount of time. But sometimes 'The Road' makes that practically impossible. Then a unknowing family parks for a night in a full truck stop. That Hwy i5 'Erreca Rest Stop' has been closed since mid 2022. But it's finally scheduled to re-open end of Oct. It's gonna be very big so it will accommodate all the trucks - it's gonna be like city. I'm laughing at my comments because I know you're probably already in Monrovia
Damn it's so beautiful out there. Dreading the thought of another grim, dreary winter in NYC. Still planning my great escape. In the meantime your videos are a great motivator. 👍
After 27 years of professional driving, yes they " SHOULD do a walk around pre-trip ", but DON'T count on it !! I retired earlier than I expected largely due to lack of professionalism in the industry. The Old School " Knights of the Road " traditional American Trucker is the MINORITY in the OTR segment of the Industry, (Over The Road) . Since around 2000-2005 the industry is declining rapidly in American drivers and increasing in foreigners and unfortunately the professionalism and skill level is not what it used to be. Yes, there are really good professionals still out there.....but MUCH LESS these days....Be CAREFUL around Big Trucks!!
Hey Brad, I've been meaning to ask you something for a while. Here in Texas, when you convert a truck into a camper to live in, do you need to apply for a permit? Let me explain better, do you need to have it reflected in the vehicle title that it is now, for example, an RV?

The traffic is SUPER COMMUTERS. These poor suckers can’t afford to live in Bay Area so they drift away to distant places. It’s an accepted term here in Bay Area.

Great video Nomad Brad!
Always good to hear someone else's inner monologue when driving/parking.
Safe travels.

I’m going south in November but I cross over to the 99 on hammer lane just above Stockton, more towns and the rest areas are nice!
I really enjoyed your video. 🤩It comforted me even though I was working at a workstation but my heart was in the scenic spot.

I’ve driven that route many times. I always stop at Casa de Fruta. It’s midway between 101 & 5. Highly recommended. ⭐️
Leaving the south bay late in the afternoon, TRAFFIC!

OMG immediately distracted by the Cricket Academy in the shopping center. I freakin love cricket! 🏏🤩

Hi. I'm doing the same. From North Brazil to South
The same reroute thing happened to me as well. I think what happens is Google reroutes everyone and then a road not meant for that much traffic gets too much traffic and then another accident happens.
Looking forward to meeting you soon and converting a truck comparable to yours into a place where I can save $1,300 a month on rent here in Las Vegas.

yea , socal for the winter. Happy van:-)
When a truck driver gets up they have to do their walk around pre-trip inspection. They're not going to back into you

Brad should stop by SJ and Orange County and try Vietnamese noodle Pho. Once ready, hook up with a Vietnamese woman.

Exhausted 🥱
How is a rest area area closed?? 😅😅😅
Greasy Gavin’s welcome to California plan!
Common in California.
Very common nationwide. Several in New Mexico are closed as well
