"Tiny homes" for $150k make no sense to me. We've had tiny homes for decades, they're called mobile homes. You can buy an older one for less than $10k put another $10k into rehab and you have a nice home for $20k-ish.

I used to do contracting work around the Bay Area, but predominantly in the SJ area before moving to Oregon during Covid. Despite working all over the Bay, and predominantly in the SJ area, I had an apartment in the North Bay. I would work anywhere from 5 to 20 days a month depending on the season and how busy it was (I was a stagehand by trade at that time), so I would boondock as needed during gigs. My rig is a clean white 2006 F-150 pickup with a basic camper shell, I had a Planet Fitness membership where I would shower & dress in the morning. A clean rig, arriving late & leaving early kept me from being hassled by locals or police. Since I don’t use them anymore, here’s the places I used to boondock regularly when working there: In Santa Clara, on Newhall near Elm, where Newhall ends by the tracks; In the CalTrain lot across from the Santa Clara PD, it’s quieter parking up by El Camino than over by the bus shelter; at the end of Lewis St., where it makes the 90 degree turn & becomes The Alameda, I would back in to the spots that back up to the landscaped area. In Saratoga: on Colombo Dr. by Southwood Dr, There’s a shopping center right there that seems to always have some boondocking vans, or car dwellers in their beaters, but I preferred the spot on the street there, a little quieter & lower profile than the parking lot. In Mountain View: the Shoreline amphitheater parking lot, Lot C or D; in the back corner of the Century theater parking lot, close to Plymouth St.; in the NE corner of the 7-11 parking lot on Pear Ave., there are some motorhome dwellers who park on Pear, but arriving late & leaving early in the 7-11 parking lot is my lower profile preference. In San Bruno, on Valleywood where it dead-ends against 280. In Alameda, at the former NAS, usually somewhere over by the Hornet Aircraft carrier Museum. In Berkeley at The Berkeley Marina, and in Fremont in the Niles District at one of the 2 or 3 public lots right off Niles Blvd. The most recent I was at any of these sites was early 2020, and some I haven’t been to in over a decade, so some of these places may not be as accessible or safe as back then.

Hey, just seeing this video! I rented a home near the corner of Wabash and Spreckles a couple years ago, rent was $2500 a month. I have a Sprinter van that I would sometimes park exactly where you camped. Fun fact, Alviso used to be called Little Chicago because the location relative to the bay reminded the guy who was building it up of Chicago's location on Lake Michigan. I think he was a Bank of America exec, can't recall. But that's why the street names are the same as Chicago street names (Wabash, State).
Accessory Dwelling Units are a huge think in CA because of house shortages. They can range from a studio with no utilities to 2br/2ba homes, depending on municipality.
if you had walked to the bathroom, at alviso, you would have saw the water fill station.. even has a dog level as this is a hiking spot that people go on 8 mile hikes, so the bathrooms are really nice and its not really noticeable unless you walk to the bathrooms off to the right side when you drive in toward where that bridge to the salt lake is at.
I was born and raised in Monterey Bay, just south of San Jose. I don't know if you're still in Central Cal, but you may want to go check out Monterey. It's a place unlike any other IMO. 👍😉
When I was a kid the salt flats were a natural thing to see. A lot of salt was produced here back then. You could always see a mountain of salt by the production facility near the San Mateo Bridge.
I just subscribed as I plan to start reviewing your videos; there may be some good ideas there about my own potential future abode. I plan to retire next year, with a bit of reduced pension, and always loved the concept of tiny living, though I think it would take me a bit to get used to driving about. If you have ever been in Toronto and seen the size of newer apartments, trust me, there would not be much downsizing I would have to do:) Looking forward to seeing some of your past videos and am glad this popped up as a recommendation tonight.
I've been to Alviso a number of times to explore and photograph birds. The salt flats were owned by Morton and Leslie for some time. They are returning some of that land to natural wilderness. The different colors are from the different levels of salination based on evaporation. Question. When you parked for the night. Why did you choose the sides of the houses with the water on the right vs. the field a few blocks up with the water on the right? I just thought that is where you would have chosen. Curios.
