  • The hand built brake lines are done on the abandoned 1962 AMC Rambler Classic Deluxe project car. In a previous video we built new brake lines for the front of the car. Now the back brake lines are done. Everything looks exactly like the Rambler factory made it in 1962 at the Kenosha, WI assembly plant. As many original parts as possible were cleaned & reused. The front brake line video, parts, tools, etc are linked below.

I like the idea of following the original plan if at all possible. It is the design of 1962.

Nice job! Quality work takes time! Better slow and thorough than fast and oops I lost my brakes! 😮 Very impressive that they had dual circuit master cylinder on that way before 1967! You taught me some new automotive trivia! As always thanks for inviting us in the garage! Glad we could help! 😂

LOL, that might be some wishful thinking!? The car was abandoned for a reason. I am guessing we will soon find out the car was sidelined because of torque tube trunion, torque tube Ujoint, transmission, or rear axle problems. Of them all, the two torque tube issues are most common and will provide hours of entertainment!

Hi, it was great watching your videos. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. Im working here in Argentina with a 1962 AMC Rambler, but it is a station wagon. I was wondering if you can explain somehow the setup for the parking brake... thanks a lot!

I will try my best to explain the parking brake in a future video. I can't guarantee when or in which video but I will do it. Thanks for watching in Argentina!

Fun relatable video to have on while I prep some food in the kitchen while dreading the next round of shoulder torture the 62 we are working on will provide my failing body!.... I am noticing comments from folks about driving this car soon and they are making me wonder if I Have missed an episode where the transmission linkage, transmission, torque tube, ear diff, and rear axle bearings have all been proven to be in good condition? As a much older fart, you learn after a while that the abandoned crap you drag home got abandoned for a reason so I am wondering if the tailshaft seal leaked into the torque tube, disintegrating the rubber trunion that holds trans and torque tube together (a common issue). I am also wondering if the U joint on that thin drive shaft is intact and if the Pinion Seal is intact. These things get stuck in my head as you do your work...So the whole thing of a song getting stuck in your head is so damned relatable to many of us. In ADHD and in ASD there is a phenomenon called echolalia where internally you just repeat a phrase or a song in your head..... or did I say that already......???? PS if you go to 1:37 in your video of two weeks ago, it shows a clear shot of the lines in the clips on the passenger side firewall

Thanks for another informative, educational & humorous comment. In regard to the car being close to ready to drive, I’m aware of most of the possible issues you described. I’m also not 100% sure yet how I’m going to go about those possible issues. My plan is to first finish the brakes. I have an NOS master cylinder rebuild kit coming from Canada. We’ll see how that goes. The next part of the plan is to fill the transmission with fluid & see what happens when I push the buttons on the dashboard. If I can get the car to move & stop inside the garage, I will start looking at the things you mentioned to prepare for an initial test drive. But that plan might fall apart you never know. That’s what I’m thinking anyways.

@@freemansgarage Sounds like a solid plan. Before filling trans with fluid I suggest three moves 1. remove the pan covering the bottom of the torque converter to visualize the converter area (two to three 5/16" bolts depending on laziness of PO) 2. a peek at the rear diff where it meets the torque tube? Is it wet? If so, it could be pinion or trans seal. 3. Pour three of your trans fluid quarts into a container and add a can of sea foam trans conditoner which will help with seals (Lucas is an alternative). then add the mess to the trans. In order of cataclysmic effect, common Borg Warner leak points after sitting are: Tailshaft seal (leaks into trunion and destroys it) (torque converter seal (provides high velocity liquid entertainment and a lovely smell on the exhaust), and a selector shaft seal can leak which produces something akin to waterboarding for garage floors. The dipstick tubes are usually a metal to metal contact and so not prone to leak from drying seals. If you wind up inside of it, The trans filter is metal and washable and the pan gasket should likely be purchased and not be an RTV affair. My shoulders hurt just thinking about all this work.... Your ears is bent enough so I suppose Its time to go load some pics to a FB album on the 62 we are doing. Stay at it.
