AMC was the last of a different breed of car companies and hung on through its last 20 or so years by determination, scrounging and making that absolute most of the resources and models available. They didn't have the capital of the big three engineering, technology and model development. My first car was a 1971 gremlin with a 232 I6. It was mainly late 50's and early 60's auto tech but it was a tank, durable and easy to work on and repair.
From what I've been studying from that SX4 it's like really good. It's my belief as a Christian and my experience when a good product comes to market our enemy called Lucifer WILL do His best to make sure He gets rid of said product. I started watching Vice Grip Garage when he first came out.

I’ve got that same Intake and manifold kit from Clifford Performance. The two water inlets to cool the manifold tell me it’s somewhat new (pre 2007). It’s a great kit it’s on my Ford 300 4.9 and makes it sound like a beast
I'm glad to see AMC's getting some love. My next door neighbor is building a 76 AMC Hornet for his sons first car. It was originally the Great Aunts car that got passed down to a cousin and then passed down to the son. When they first got it it ran and drove but that was about it, They are pitting a V6 out of a 90's Dakota in it and then repainting it silver and having the interior redone in something close to red that came with. It'll be a nice and cool little car when they get it done.
Excellent Score!!! Always keep your eyes open. As you well know this is a Jeep chasse with an AMC hatchback body... The drive train parts are everywhere and available forever! No wimpy-ass unibody, this car has a full frame and it is stout! The worst thing about this car is it has Jeep gas mileage. This is one badass hatchback! Nice to see you are enthusiastic about the car because this is a GREAT buy on a smokin' ride. Well done. AND, best of all, it's easy to see that this car was loved. I know you will fix up this ride, it's keeper. Sweet!
Awesome score honestly that’s a really cool car worth saving, sucks about the 59 wagon but worked out in the end. Definitely want to see this thing back on the road, it’d make a cool rally car build.
I had an 84 wagon as a first car because it was free. Was sitting in a field in central Montana and I got it running and driving. Fantastic winter car that’s also a classic! 4.0 5speed sx4 would be a budget rally car
Oh man, this isn't even the fastest model that they produced! They even made a lowered RWD version with sick body kit on it that looks amazing. While I love these so much, the aero package on the AMC Spirit AMX is super rare. It is a different model name, but it is literally the same body with a bad ass Firebird TA style Eagle decal on the hood and sick aero. This body style came in tons of different trim levels. They had 4 door hatches, wagons, convertibles you name it. Even a 2 door shortened hatch version which was based on the redesigned Gremlin which was the base for the platform. Hell they even had a unique looking 2 door sedan with more of a traditional notchback and trunk. Very cool and versatile platform and highly underrated! Believe it or not this car platform was used from
@@BFKAnthony817I had an 83 amc spirit gt from 1994 to 2000. Loved that car. had quite a few mods on the 258 including 10 to 1 compression, headers, duals etc.

Way ahead of its time!! In the early 1980s I took over a pari of car-sized newspaper routes from a guy who had one of these - plus a station wagon 4x4 Eagle for his wife. I immediately think of him when I see the car. Thanks for sharing!

Im thinking he put it up there to keep it from getting hit by a loader and you can see it over the tall fence. $800 was a STEAL! You can get a rebuilt title on it. I always loved those old Eagles. IMHO, the Eagle was the fore father of the mid-sized Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. With a little lift you can fit 33s under those things making them a blast off road. Good luck with it bro, that was an awesome find.
I had an 83 SX-4 Sport. 5 speed. Very cool car and an amazingly tight turning radius. I got an offer I couldn’t refuse and have regretted selling it. It was in as new condition after 20 years. At least it left town and I don’t have to see it. Very cool cars. Bright cherry red.
I bought an 83 sx4 a couple years ago 4.2 with a t5 with no clutch MC either. I got mine from Kennedy American and made our own reservoir. That is an awesome find for a steal. The rally gauge (ones by the shifter) are pretty rare. Also if the tac works that pretty rare too
Omg that is so cool wish i was still driving my uncles.! It was black 34,000 miles and looked brand new!! The clutch started slipping and was parked for a year and he junked it before I could grab it ! Man now you got my attention!!! Lol im excited about this one!! Sorry JD your dad has the cool car now !!! Lol freaking awesome man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now that I found the 1st video about it I understand your reply on my comment and I agree 100% that it's something worth keeping as the going to town rig. Look forward to you giving it the TLC it needs.
Thats so freaking awesome 👌, I haven't seen one since I was 8 or 9. I'm 40. Thanks for the up close look. I have always wanted to know, now I do! Hope you keep it and off road the sweet thing!
All right, this time I'm jealous. I am sooooooooo JEALOUS. I've got 5 cars I'm paying insurance on and you were already making me want to get more then you go and get THIS. The last time I saw one of these on the road was in 1997 when I was working at a grocery store, it was a red SX/4. I'd still rather have the Eagle wagon. That SX/4 you found is a total daily driver.
I bought the exact same model in Tallahassee Florida back in 1991 for $500 and had it for almost a year before the gearbox shredded all the synchronizers and lost first and third. I was only 20 so sold it for what I bought it for because it was low miles and still looked in great shape. Big regrets today now. Think of a stump pulling real man's AWD 4x4 with a hatchback body. Helped several "other" 4x4 stuck in mud get out.
drove a 1973 AMC Gremlin with a 3.8 liter 6 cilinder from 1985 until 1995, realy easy cars to work on, but the funney thing is AMC reused parts in all the cars they made, like the door handle, you findit on this Eagle, the Pacer the Gremlin the Matador and so on, i see the dashboard is almost the same as the Gremlin dash. I realy liked the Gremlin and still regret i sold it, have no money to get me a other one. But very good you gona save this Eagle gem AMC is getting very rare.
Always loved the AMC brand. First car was a 1973 AMC Hornet Station Wagon. Was great for hauling my model airplane around. Lost mine to a stuck float, so yeah be careful with the fuel. :)
Those cars were awesome IMO. I'd happily climb behind the wheel of one of those things any day. Windows down, arm out the window, shifting gears and going places you wouldn't have imagined a car going back then.
When i was a kid i first saw a 4 wheel drive amc at jelly stone campground in silver lake and it blew my mind that a car could be 4 wheel drive lol. That 2 door is a sweet little car.
I use to have one of them back in the 90's it was manual trans with manual brakes and manual steering. It was a fun car I wish I had it still or like to buy another one but a AMC spirit instead of a Eagle and put a V8 into it
Awesome find Brother. I always wanted a Gremlin X. They are Cool little cars. AMC made some really awesome cars in their day. They even snuck out some cool muscle cars to.
I had a new 81 back then, one thing that surprised me was I hit a 6” puddle and the car started missing half the cylinders because the distributor was halfway down from top of engine and easily got water in it. Mine was full time 4wd it didn’t have the switch to go 2wd, fun car easy to work on.
Never thought of that, I just avoided water and got good at removing cap and drying it out. That 83 does bring back memories. I drove mine thru a lot of snow, one time I parked it at work in a snow bank at end of work drove it out only to find out brakes were not working they were all frozen so I drove it a few miles while holding down brakes to heat defrost them, lol stupid 20 yr old me.
Years ago there was a title company downtown KCMO for cars. $300 and you'd get yourself a clean title. I assume they did it legally because they were in business for a long time. I never used them. Just one of those bits of information I picked up over the decades. I think they were down at 31st and Broadway area maybe Southwest trafficway not really sure. Might come in handy for that wagon. I've heard of other ways but old car isn't worth doing something that might be considered should we say below the table. Sure wish I had more money back in the mid 80s to late '80s and some idea that these AMCs are going to be worth some money. I used to go to an auction with a guy to help him out and just hang out and these cars are almost new. Almost never did one of these AMC's sell for more than 500 bucks going across the dealer's auction. The small dealer that I hung out with offered to set me up but I can see throwing my money away. I could give bigger car with better gas mileage but not all wheel drive are some of the other options. Five time these cars are about 5 years old some of the old Farmers would beat them up to about 1500 bucks because they'd use them with as a cheap four-wheel drive to get back to the back part of the properties. Seems like a lot of people buddy up small dealers at these auctions. There's a salvage yard in Adrian having a retirement sale. It's not that far south from you. There isn't much left but maybe 15-20 cars at most. He's got a really nice drunk clip from a AMC rebel SST or maybe it was a rambler then I'm not sure what AMC took over rambler. 64 Chevy two-door hardtop stripped. About a 66 cougar banged up and some try five stuff. Also a mid-80s to 1990 mustang convertible. I used to try to buy things out of that yard years ago when I go through there from time to time. But I stopped because he would not sell anything but parts. Now he's just trying to clear it out and pretty much has before I knew it. I was interested in a couple of things but not enough to buy them. And they're all bill of sale only. You know years ago a car and a salvage yard wasn't necessarily labeled with a salvage title and some of them including that 55 with the partial diamond interior left have been there long enough that they're probably out of the system anyway. Okay just a few thoughts might help you. Oh yeah maybe this is a teaser but I've known for going on 20 years of a 500 car stash. It's thinned out some but he really never sold any parts. Now I know quite a bit about the family but their family dynamic has changed. Mainly 1948 through 1968. Plus a dozen 1930s Cadillacs and a rebel SST of the same color needing a front clip because of accident damage. But the Dynamics have changed. But there's plenty more 50 to 150 car stashes well within travel distance. Here's another one he advertised parts on Craigslist just outside of Springfield. I'm not the been to that one but he has a lot of them. There must be a reason why I know TH-camr that I know of has been to his yard and done video . Good luck in the hunt.
That '59 Ford wagon is really cool but really rusty. I hope someone saves it though. Good score though on that little AMC. It looks to be in really decent shape and should make a nice project that doesn't look like a ton of work. Should be a fun car!
Local junkyard that adjoined our property had one of these for parts running with nary a window in it, but did have a full size oxy acetylene torch setup rolling around unsecured in the back. The owners son and I were best friends, and bombed that thing all over. We ended up rolling it one day, and after a quick righting with the front end loader she was back in action. The 80s were fun.
Friend of mine had an Eagle he used on his rural mail route! Even in heavy snow he always got the mail delivered. His was just the basic Eagle with an automatic. You wouldn't want a manual shift on a mail route anyway!
Production was 2259 for SX4 lift backs in 1983. Meaning you got a deal/steal. I have been looking out for an '85 Eagle Wagon. Just like the upgrades from introduction to 85, Good looking out, Ty for taking us along
Great find! If you poke around, you might find out that a lot of those parts will interchange with the XJ (1984-2001) Cherokee. AMC was famous for using the same parts on everything. I have an old Wagoneer and it shares parts with a LOT of other AMC (and even Chevy) vehicles. Example: I have 2 dome lights in mine that Jeep suppliers want $50 a piece for. After some comparison it turns out they are actually 70s Chevy C-10 pieces available for $15. Fingers crossed that the clutch MC might be easier to find than you think.
Spent a few years in the back seat of an 83 wagon with a 5 speed. The clutch master was junk from the beginning. My dad got his wagon and then found himself between jobs in a bad way, when the clutch went out the third time he said F it and just drove it for a few years with no clutch. Put it in first and crank it up. Trans held up for a few years before it scattered all over an off ramp. I’ve always wanted one. This was the car AMC finally got right. Hell, it lasted longer than AMC did. This might be the coolest thing you own Dalton!
I would love to know how that body survived. Missouri winter, highway department isn't kind. And to have that thing not be a home for metal worms. You sir scored.
@@PoleBarnGarage * PROPERLY * Ziebarted. Up here in Ohio I see that sticker in the window and they are either super clean, or returning to Mother Earth… absolutely no in between.

Great find! Same exact model and color I owned that I bought new in 1981. I still have the sticker from the window and the VIN! You should read me the VIN on that cause I may have once owned it! As a big AMC fan I am definitely excited to see you save that sweet little eagle.
I drive past that junkyard every day. I noticed the eagle was gone, good for you.

My first car was a 1979 AMC Spirit 4 cylinder (Audi block) with a manual transmission. The AMCs have a spot in my heart. Nice find!

Cherokee uses integral reservoir, no room for it in eagle.

Dude I'm so stoked to work on it. I gotta get that Roadrunner running first, then it's all eagle
What a cool little car. Love the little duck tail spoiler. Would be a fun daily driver. I think some rear window louvers would look good on it
I always loved the look of the AMC eagles but never knew they had that body style. Its freaking sweet got a subscriber just from this car.
Hey I don't blame you, it's just awesome
Nice find, looking forward to see more of it .
There's definitely some fun to be had here!
First time to your channel. Couldn't have came across at a better time. I love the 4.0 straight 6 engine. Beautiful car! What a find!
This car is rad, what a friggin score that it already has speed parts! And it’s a stick!! Can’t wait to see this thing on the road 🤟🏽😎🤟🏽
wow. for 1K what an absolute steal. Would love one of these.
Those Eagles were built like tanks. A very good find .
That was the deal of a century!😀
drove a 1973 AMC Gremlin with a 3.8 liter 6 cilinder from 1985 until 1995, realy easy cars to work on, but the funney thing is AMC reused parts in all the cars they made, like the door handle, you findit on this Eagle, the Pacer the Gremlin the Matador and so on, i see the dashboard is almost the same as the Gremlin dash. I realy liked the Gremlin and still regret i sold it, have no money to get me a other one.
But very good you gona save this Eagle gem AMC is getting very rare.
Excellent! I have always liked those, I only rode in one once back in the late 80's. That is a great find and in great shape!
Wow lucky ,man i remember the days when i wouldn't even look at that car,but now i would love to own one.
I Love AMCs. I have a Concord that probably has half the parts you would need for it
Always loved the AMC brand. First car was a 1973 AMC Hornet Station Wagon. Was great for hauling my model airplane around. Lost mine to a stuck float, so yeah be careful with the fuel. :)
OMG!!! I am here for all of this!! Love AMC's!
Those cars were awesome IMO. I'd happily climb behind the wheel of one of those things any day. Windows down, arm out the window, shifting gears and going places you wouldn't have imagined a car going back then.
I think its really cool and 4 wheel drive makes the day
When i was a kid i first saw a 4 wheel drive amc at jelly stone campground in silver lake and it blew my mind that a car could be 4 wheel drive lol.
That is an awesomely great find so glad you're able to save it
How amazing! I really enjoyed that bit of rare luck.
Junkyard Digs would be proud of your purchase!
He is
I had a new 81 back then, one thing that surprised me was I hit a 6” puddle and the car started missing half the cylinders because the distributor was halfway down from top of engine and easily got water in it. Mine was full time 4wd it didn’t have the switch to go 2wd, fun car easy to work on.
Little rtv around the cap fixes that, been there lol
Wow I cant wait to see you get this thing screaming around the roads!
Me either. I'm jumping it
Awesome find ,so glad to see it running. 👍👍👍😃😃😃
That '59 Ford wagon is really cool but really rusty. I hope someone saves it though. Good score though on that little AMC. It looks to be in really decent shape and should make a nice project that doesn't look like a ton of work. Should be a fun car!
I will save it given the chance. That's not rust to me lol
I love those sweet little hatchbacks. Good find
The factory ones were junk even 40 years ago. Even if he got his hands on one it would be expensive and still
Wouldn’t work
Unfortunately it's an 81-83 only kinda deal. Cherokee uses an integral reservoir, there's no room on these for it
I've been looking for one of those for a long time. Glad you were able to save it from the crusher. Fix it up and have lots of fun with it.
I think it is!
You scored on this thing. I've got a 72 Sportabout and an 80's 5 speed Eagle in my fleet now.
I would love to know how that body survived. Missouri winter, highway department isn't kind. And to have that thing not be a home for metal worms. You sir scored.
They held up pretty good… actually rather awesome.
This was one that AMC actually nailed it on.
They were all ziebarted from the factory, really worked
@@PoleBarnGarage
* PROPERLY * Ziebarted.
Up here in Ohio I see that sticker in the window and they are either super clean, or returning to Mother Earth… absolutely no in between.
Always the possibility that somebody out in the desert owned it and it just ended up there the last couple of years depending on how long it's been there just a thought man.
Wow, you got that right. Must been those people who cleaned it well or garaged in winter weather mostly.
Great score on the Eagle!!
I think you could sell the intake and recover your investment, I wouldn't but it would cover it. Great find.👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great find! Same exact model and color I owned that I bought new in 1981. I still have the sticker from the window and the VIN! You should read me the VIN on that cause I may have once owned it! That would be really cool to find out you found my first new car!! Good luck with it. Mine had the four banger Iron Duke motor.
It's an 83 so unfortunately I doubt it
Cool find and it runs. Junk yard digs had a couple on his show. Took it to a jeep meet did some 4x4ing. Goods luck. .from Sweden.
