  • Dr. Eric Terry, a tourist from America, was attacked by his Grab taxi driver and took matters into his own hands - literally. Here is his story. I hope we can learn from his experience. Thanks for watching.

Cal. You can correct me on this but I assume his fiance is Filipino! If so, foreigners must be careful due to jealousy. Especially black Americans. They sometimes can't stand to see their women with foreigners Especially black guys. This may have been what triggers the guy. Who knows, he may have lose his girl to a foreigner. I've experienced this when I'm with my wife as well.
However, believe it or not I've seen more Filipinos women jealous of other Filipinos women who are with foreigners. The lighter her skin the more the Envy. Colorism is the bastard child of racism.

Also, no one knows what to do if put in this situation until it happens; that's when instincts kick in. I am glad Eric got out of there, and it was an Uber, and not a cab driver you need to be careful of those guys. There could have been 20 cabs coming down on him in a few seconds. I’m sure the comment “it’s a stupid rule” must have insulted the driver and triggered him from an already distraught driver to a pissed off enough to go kinetic.. I’m sure the male passenger is a good friend of yours Calvin, and it’s possible he felt he needed to uphold his manhood, or perhaps just thought that a physical response was the necessary call of the moment to teach the driver a lesson he won’t forget. Still I say, situations like that, it is best to have just got out of the cab and called for another one. Though your girlfriend may feel more confident being out with you at night or in some unknown place, but I also know that things can get a lot worse with her foreigner boyfriend finding himself at a a lot more disadvantaged situation, whatever that can unpredictably be, and you can believe it she would still love you as much, and perhaps even respect you more for keeping your cool in such a situation.

Been here 7 years - 5 Cebu City - 2 Inabanga. "Aggressive due to Face" is their go to attitude when dealing with Kanos. I'm 76, 5'6", 155 pounds. Grew up in inner city of Chicago, 4 years Marine Corps, 13 months Vietnam. As a smallish person my "fight or flight" leans toward flight. Actually walking :).
Better to have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it.
I always wear a "chest bag" that has a Velcro pad glued on within easy reach of my left hand. It holds a small pepper spray canister with mating Velcro pad. Canister has a stretchy cord attached to bottom of bag (about 2 1/2 ft total).
In addition I have a "collapsible steel baton" (12" closed / 28") open) that I've added three 1/2" steel nuts to the end (very heavy when extended) and a paracord wrist strap so I can't lose it.
Baton fits in bag. Have practiced holding baton tip in palm of right hand, baton up behind arm where it's not noticeable, cord around wrist, thumb resting on 1/2" nuts. Can deploy simply by pushing tip with thumb. No need to swing which can hit someone close.
Deployed them 3 times. Twice walking home at night - very dark side street leading to Winland Towers. Potential muggers! Third time below.
Was in marked walkway with green walk light on Colon St. at 138 Mall - fecking cab making right hand turn through people in crosswalk almost hit me and old lady next to me, I smacked his side window as he passed. He pulled over to Metro, stopped and got out.
I finished crossing, deployed baton and pepper spray when he started to come at me. When he got close enough to see what was in my hands, changed his mind and drove off. Sectors weren't sure why it happened. I said AH taxi almost hit old lady crossing on green light. They agreed taxi drivers are AHs.
Note for Eric - I agree. D.I. said "when you get someone down, don't think they won't get up, make sure they can't get up". Daughter - a deputy sheriff said use spray first, if needed use baton but hit them in shin, clavicle, arm, but never in head / chest / face.
BTW - bag also has a carabiner on cord I attach to pants belt loop. Can cut bag strap but carabiner stops them from stealing bag.

Well in the circumstances he handled himself well. Obviously educating yourself about the law and culture in any country you plan to visit I's important.
It will be interesting to see if there are any further developments in this story.
You and others have pointed out the problems when getting confrontational with Filipinos.
"You are not just fighting one. You are fighting them all."
So the taxi driver knows where he lives. He ended up being humiliated in front of another filipino and had to drive away having had his a$$ kicked.
Is he going to let that slide or seek retribution?
Easy to say in hindsight but perhaps the best course of action would have been to have called another cab. Hopefully it will end here.
My Dad who had a hard life took up boxing in the army and lost only one fight told me. Son there's no shame in walking away if you can but if you have no other choice then forget the rule book and hurt the other guy by any means before he hurts you

I think his reaction is understandable, but very very dangerous. Not criticizing him per se, but in most other instances like this in Southeast Asian countries (in general) the foreigner will get blamed for everything and if this were at a bar or public place the locals would’ve helped the driver and ganged up on the foreigner. The whole put him to sleep thing and aggressive response is self defense, but if he killed him (or didn’t and got an attempted murder charge) he could’ve landed himself in South Cotobato type dungeon “jail” for a very long time. There ain’t no right to a speedy “fair” trial and all that there you could possibly languish for years before your case is even heard, yes decades..
