The Ultimate Solo Road Trip [ Camping in the Kosciuszko National Park ]

- I have been on many solo road trips, but this one was the ultimate solo road trip camping in the Kosciuszko National Park.
My solo road trip heads out of the tiny East Gippsland town of Buchan, and continues along the Barry Way towards Jindabyne in New South Wales.
Travelling along the Barry Way, the road is tight in spots with stunning views looking down over the Snowy River.
The old school house at Suggan Buggan has been on my list of historical sites to see for many years, and it was amazing to see the school house that was built way back in 1865.
After having lunch on the Suggan Buggan River, i pressed on with my solo road trip for my camp spot in the Kosciuszko National Park.
I camped my first night in a camping ground called Pinch River camp ground.
This is a really nice spot to camp, and right on the banks of the Pinch River.
Setting up camp and getting the camp fire going, ready to cook up my dinner.
A simple dinner of sangs in wraps was on the menu.
The next morning after cooking a toasted sandwich in my jaffle iron, i packed up camp and continued along the Barry Way into Jindabyne.
My camp spot for tonight is still in the Kosciuszko National Park at a spot called Island Bend. I set up camp at high elevation under the snow gums and relaxed for the night around the camp fire.

What makes you standout is not because I'm Victorian so I have a instant bias, but because you give the background and history of place's and tracks.

As a video editor, I highly appreciate the multiple camera angles! Alot of work for a solo person to get all the vehicle and camp footage! Love the videos!

It is a stack of work setting up all the camera's on my own, and then cutting them in during the edit.

what if Suggan Buggan had a teacher by the name of Duggan? LOL What is good about Tim's videos: 1) No fancy stuff - nice and simple 2) No women in bikinis or shower scenes to deliberately hike up the views 3) chockablock with good practical ideas helps novices and experts alike 4) No fancy "media" and that sort of self importance. Glad you make them and share. Please show a bit of what you have set up for after dark - lighting etc.

Timbo, jump on eBay and buy an AM/SSB CB for around $120 (with scan feature) or even the new Uniden digital 980 SSB and install it as a 2nd CB and you'll find you'll be able to hear all the chat between station properties and alot of the 4x4 boys out in middle of Australia, all who treat the chat alot more professionally.
In WA last night, conditions were perfect and a few of the 4x4 boys out at Mt Augustus were talking to other 4x4ers out at Ularu and they were asking if you were on the channel to have a chat. Something else, not sure if you do already or not (as Graham Cahill does with his 3 two ways) but when parked up at camp, leave the 2ways on SCAN and turn squelch up to scan away quietly in background incase someone does a call out for emergency assistance, youll be close and able to respond. 👍
Also, keep up the filming of these trips, it's allowing everyone around the world who can't be here to at least travel along with you. 👍

I’m not understanding your point on why I need to get one of these radios while on my solo trips.
I understand the point of winding up the squelch on the uhf for longer range
If I’m driving on my own I sometimes do that and I do run my uhf on scan so I can hear if and groups are coming towards me.
Not sure if I explained that well lol.

I know that route from Dargo to Jindabyne via the Barry Way quite well. Travel it once a year at least on the way to Sydney and back. So much better than the Hume if you have the spare time. Guess the dislikes are for forgetting the garlic eh? :-)
Regarding the old school house; legend has it that like my grandfathers axe, having had two new handles and one head replaced, the school despite burning down and having the roof replaced twice and the doors and windows three times, it's still the original 1850s building. Who'd have thunk wood out there would last so long, what with all the termites! :-)

It can be very hit and miss when it comes to the weather and windy days.

The watkinson of Suggan Buggan helped in the restoration of the school house .Edmund O Rouke was the first settler there back in 1858 and should be looked after to show future generations of the hardship these people went through..This whole area is full of history . Thanks Tim to bring me back memories of the region .. I definitely will doing a trip back to the Suggan Buggan Valley

Did an almost identical trip in early March myself Timbo, right down to the G & T's (in a pint glass 😂) . . . just about the only difference was that I had me flyrods with me - just added a little more to the trip.
You are dead right . . . it is the most beautiful country and the Barry Way is a spectacular ride in the extreme . . .

Little hint for your jaffle iron if the handles are made of wood, alfoil around the handles will stop them from burning. Just a trick I learnt .

Island Bend Campground is my favourite campground at the Kosciusko National Park. Plenty of spots both right next to the river and above the hill where it's flatter. A great place to swim in summer - with one side of the campground having relatively fast flowing water, and on the other, much calmer, almost lake like. The National Parks also placed metal fire pits with swinging grills & hotplates on each camp spots. Plus plenty of locals (ie. wildlife) to say hello at dusk and dawn - from mobs of kangaroos, to wayward wombats, & cheeky possums. So make sure you put your food locked up at night.

I went down on the river at Island Bend for a look and it was jammed packed. Like a caravan park during Xmas but in the bush.
Thats why i camped up the top on my own.

I also do all my camping solo. I think it is very brave to highlight it to the world.
My dogs are great companions, and enjoy my camp oven cooking. No national parks for me, cause I want my best mates with me.
Maybe you could start a 'movement', so solo campers could meet, interact, have their g & t's, and then disappear but into their own shells.

I would so love to have a dog. Only one reason i dont, is National Parks. It is s real shame, as a dog as you said would make a great travel buddy.

For me a good camping trip involves a camp fire, and being able to have my old and young dog with me.
When QPWS impose fire bans, when local fire authorities have no local bans in place, I regret taking the effort to get out there.
Loving these solo episodes Tim. Always something to learn about these though as simple as they seem.

I can smell the eucalypt Tim....and the smell of fire smoke. It's a great drive. I like the stretch through the black cypress pine forest on that track. It came as a surprise for me used to gum trees.

Watching this brings back lots of great memories for me having travelled this route a few times myself. Surprised to hear you haven't been to Kosciuszko before. Looking forward to watching the next episode(s). I hope you hike to the summit of Mt. Kosciuszko. It's well worth it and was one off the bucket list for me.
I've also taken a kayak and canoe down the Snowy River from Willis on the N.S.W./ VIC. border to Buchan a few times with mates. Five days at a leisurely pace, camping on sandy riverbanks each night. Allows you into the many deep inaccessible gorges on that part of the river. Absolutely unforgettable.

I have been to Kosciuszko once before when i hiked over the top in my scouting days, some 45years ago.

Gday Tim....great video mate !!...i started to do some solo camping in remote places myself, i would like to get further up the high country on my own, but i have this paranoid thought of wild dogs and big goannas hanging around my swag at night....have you ever encounted any problems like that? 😁😁

I have never had any issues with wild dogs on any of my trips and specially on my solo camping trips.
I sure do hear them, but never felt threatened by them coming into my camp.
Maybe try a few locations that aren't quite so remote and see how you go.

@@timbates4wdadventures mate I am travelling down from Brissy next week on to Port Campbell Vic to see some mates. Let me know of any good camping spots. I then have to go back to Bourke and see a Crosley Engine my dad rebuilt restored. It used to power Sydney in the old days, then was used as a water pump near Narromine where I hail from. Now resides at Bourke.
Once again tim you have outdone yourself alwasy producing the goods, keep it up mate would love to have a pie with you someday
