Have a look into manifolds. That’s where a lot of the characteristics of the sound are made. The way in which a manifold directs the gasses from each cylinder and how those gasses interact/interfere with each other drastically change the sound.
I would definitely get the Armytrix exhaust! I bought one for my 2013 Audi RS5 and absolutely love it! Mine has the valvetronic system so I can open and close the valves whenever I want. Makes a world of difference. Goes from stock sounding exhaust pure racecar. It is so great.
Leave the Porsche Sport Exhaust and swap the stock cats for 100/200 cell sport HJS ones. You'll have plenty enough volume while conserving driveability plus the power bump. A catback system only makes noise and its expensive.
Great car, but can't beat the sound of my Boxster S with a proper Flat 6 Porsche sound. I've modded the air intake and had a custom stainless exhaust fabricated. Sounds the dogs! unfortunately, the 718 just has a nice sound like a Subaru Impreze or something.

You can’t fix that noise. I didn’t buy one because of the horrible sounding engine. The problem with turbo engines is it uses the exhaust gases to spin the turbos hence no natural sound coming out. Even the 911 Turbo (which I have) does’t sound very good. An exhaust improved it some but it will never be as good as a NA engine. (PS Paul Wallace is no expert)
The green is sooo much better, like it more and more every time I see it. Might be worth listening to Subaru exhausts, and seeing if they do anything good for WRX/STIs (or if you want to try avoiding that sound, etc).
Running a full turbo back borla touring exhaust on my focus st. Brilliant tone, deep and burbly. Borla had a lot of experience with four bangers. Give them a look.
Don't think that its wrong having that car in exactly same setting like now!! And yes, it is perfect!! Anyhow, whatever you think that it will make you happy, you should do it!
You're driving a turbo 4 what do you expect? You can put a quad straight pipe de-catted titanium exhaust on from kreissegg. It still won't sound like anything like the old carrera boxer 6, let alone a 8500rpm shrieking V12
Try running un equal length headers. Newer Subaru's have the same problem with lack of tone (and overall noise) since they made the switch to equal length headers.
What happens to your Porsche Warranty? If your a normal customer it gets voided with any modification and Porsche will wash their hands at any issue. But maybe TH-cam negates that for benefit of PR? Interesting to see what you’d be told compared to other owners. 👍
If a reputable German tuner does the work, and they sort out responsibility between Porsche AG and their own warranty insurer, then there is no issue. This is why German tuners can appear to be expensive. Does this insurance work? Yes it does, I blew two turbos on a tuned car, whilst the tuner was replacing the turbos, it was noticed that there were potential problems with the gearbox, so the manufacturer replaced the gearbox as well.
For a decent exhaust system for a Porsche, go to a German tuner. For starters consider Gemballa and Techart. I'm not sure when Akrapovič will have their 718 system ready. They will protect the warranty, and make sure the car is legal in Germany (which it won't be if a UK tuner does the work). Not being legal doesn't matter, until you get stopped. Then you can't drive the car in Germany. If the car is too noisy, you will be stopped. And not having cats is a guaranteed fail, illegal everywhere.
Porsche are about fun if....you get a GT4 (as you know!) I've been dailying mine for 18 months now in Dubai and it's bulletproof and needs no mods at all. Well, another 40 bhp would be nirvana but for road driving it's perfectly fast enough!
I know you had Larini on your F-Type but I’ve got a full Cobra exhaust system on my GT86. If they don’t have one made they will make one and I’d recommend it!
I’d like to see the cayman with an exhaust that makes the turbo noises much louder! I’ve seen exhausts that just make the whole 4 cylinder louder. Some serious turbo whistle and spool would make for a great sound
careful. sometimes an exhaust just makes the same sound louder, so if you don’t love the current sound of your current sports exhaust, you may not like aftermarket. Just trust that the engineers at Porsche did the best they could at trying to make the 4 cylinder sound balanced and correct without going too far. (this is coming from a guy who had 3 different exhausts on my WRX trying to find the right sound.) 4 cylinders and exhausts are tricky. Porsche has probably done all they can.
Hi, I have the factory Sports exhaust on mine and it starts to Sound better (tone wise) the more i drive it. It now has 6000km on it. I know you are going to change it anyway but it will get better 🤘🏼
I'm afraid no exhaust can fix that "dull and boring" sound. That's just the character of the engine. If you somehow put equal-length intakes the sound would vastly improve but too bad, Porsche clearly stated it's not possible because of not enough space around the engine to put them into.
Will probably sound even more like a Subaru with an exhaust than it already does. Should’ve saved yourself a few quid & got a 981 cayman with a proper flat 6. Never get bored of the sound mine makes.
You could get 1" bigger wheels with a smaller offset (all silver, like car Gods intended wheels to be), lower it 20 or 25mm and get probably one of the best looking Cayman 718s in the world.
I like the "sche". As a matter of fact, I'd just say "sche" in the future and leave out the "Por" part. As to the exhaust options, I think it's a bit like putting lipstick on a pig (audibly). Especially compared to the earlier Boxster/Cayman models. I thought Tim had a great sounding IPE system on his GT4, but who know what it will sound like on a 4-banger. I am interested in where you go with this Sam, cause I'll probably update/upgrade from my 987 Boxster to a 718 at some point.

I think you're going to be disappointed with any different exhaust system that you buy. Your friend Paul is right. The problem is the layout of the turbo charged four cylinder engine. All you're going to get with a different exhaust is a much louder turbo four sound. Maybe a different exhaust would make one of the newer 911 sound okay, because they are still six cylinders. I have a 2016 Boxster S, with the 3.4 liter six, and even without a sports exhaust, it sounds awesome because of the natural tone of the engine. Make sure when you install the new exhaust you don't burn any bridges that would stop your from re-installing the factory exhaust. I know the newer Cayman S's are great cars, but I bought the last year of the Boxster S with the six cylinder for this very reason. I wanted it to sound the way Porsche six cylinders have sounded for years, like a race car!
Content suggestion: Fancy doing a review of £65k Porkers including a 718, 991.1 C2S and a 997.2 GTS? I was loaned a 718 Boxster for a few days while my 911 was at the dealer. Would be interested in your thoughts at that price point?
Could do something different and get PCW exhaust to modify your existing system? They create a partial silencer bypass, and on Porsche's it makes them sound mega. Its a budget alternative to a full system, but would make a really interesting video.
