Good review of what looks to be a great little car. You've avoided the mistake that other reviewers have made of referring to the CVT as being a belt drive, when it is in fact an eCVT using planetary gears. You have, however, repeated their error of referring to B mode as brake regen, whereas on Toyotas the B mode is only used to provide engine braking on steep downhill runs (thus avoiding potential brake fade).
I bought my partner the Yaris on 71 plate didn’t buy it new but got from Toyota got a great warranty on it & it’s the best economical in its class she loves it ❤
I didn't like the looks when I first saw it but I took one for a test drive and bought one. I agree with all your comments about this car, you're review is spot on. What a nice car. The looks are starting to grow on me as I start to appercieate how special this car is. I'm getting 69.4mpg just driving normally to work and back. I now can't imagine commuting to work in anything else. I'm a lazy driver, and the Yaris Cross almost drives its self. What a fabulous bit of engineering! I looked at lots of reviews for this car before buying and they're all positive and a great review from yourself, thanks. I'll add that I'm finding the dealer prices have dropped since you posted this video. Eveyone watching this, should go and check for the current pricing information. You might be as surprised as I was when you compare with the competition.

Great review, my wife after previously having 7 original Yaris' picks up her premier Yaris Cross on Tuesday next. I have a CHR but I think the Cross is better for space, especially in the back. Great review. Like you, I had a dad who loved Toyotas. I have a Hyundai Ioniq which is also very good, but I did consider a Yaris, but the boot was a wee bit too small -- but the Cross solves that with SUV practicality.
Great review other journalists complain about the CVT , I'm in a Hybrid Compass 1.5 , but would consider the Yaris Cross as the road tax for one is way cheaper, I could hear the slight noise when you accelerated, no doubt in the rain it would be minimal, the only thing missing is a Sunroof 🙂
Great review....couple of things ...an all wheel drive is available and a sunroof is also an option ...toyota uses an e CVT (which uses planetary gears ) not belt driven - I have an excel and it's a great car for round town and is practical (as long as you don't have a family full of six footers). I would get another when it's due for replacement. I like your style of review so I have subscribed ... great work - thanks
My fiance and I just ordered one in Khonkaen, Thailand. It should be ready in about 4 or 5 weeks, and from our brief test drives, I am very impressed by its comfort, fit and finish, and performance. The price is very reasonable too. The interior space is indeed large when considering the overall size, and yes, it would be nice if the rear doors opened wider, but tha5 is going to be a minor inconvenience not often experienced directly by me or her.
I'm on 50 000 miles in my lease Yaris. Getting a genuine (if the car is telling the truth) 70mpg. Really like the go-kart around town feel with the electric motor. Buying next but should it be this, the Jeep or the Duster?
@@houseofcars1973already watched your Duster one. You were very taken. I'll research reliability scores and warranty. Are these things differentiators? Toyota's reliability and 100 000 warranty (with servicing) is very tempting.
Having been in the Automotive business since 1970 Have bought many Toyota mine is delivered in September 2nd, to hear why enjoy the rest of this review ❤
We’ve just ordered one, previously owned an Aygo and currently have a Verso, wanted to change as there are more ZBEs coming in here in Spain and the Verso will not give me full access. We looked at the Corolla Cross last year but found it a bit basic. Saw this model in the showroom whilst the Verso was being serviced, wanted a hybrid, looking forward to it being delivered.
Pity about the battery that goes flat if you don't drive it for 3 days. Also, the ev battery won't last more than 2 minutes in ev only mode. If only it had a 10 kwh battery or better. Still it's an 8/10 very efficient and reasonable acceleration. One great thing is it comes with radar cruise control at no extra cost.
I have left mine in the drive twice for 7 & then 8 days while I have been away a couple of times. Got in the car and drove off both times with no problems.
I have had mine for nearly two years now. The 12 v battery issue discharging was overcome with a solar trickle charger connected inside the car to the OCD socket. In winter I will leave it in ready mode on the drive for an hour to self charge. I am lucky to live where I have a secure driveway. Over 100mpg has been possible on some trips, over 50 percent electric. Using the My Toyota app is interesting to check mpg etc. about 68mpg in total driving which is great. Overall I can't fault it for it's economy. Pity Toyota did not put a better/bigger ah 12v battery in it.
Fancy having to do all that nonsense in a modern 21st century car. It simply does not make sense and would make the car useless for my needs. AA/RAC et. al would be mandatory.
HI had the BZ4X for two weeks and A transit mini bus rolled down the hill and the inevitable happened I looked at the model you reviewed but the boot was A little bit small for my needs that was A good video. if you want A change try the bz4x I love it. thank you.👌👌😀😀
I reviewed the bZ4X on AutoEV when it came out. The efficiency was very disappointing. However, on the day I tested the Yaris Cross, I drove the newly updated bZ4X which is much more efficient. Which is great as it’s a good car. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@houseofcars1973 Yes, apologies I entered the comment before I had got to the end. Glad you know there is an AWD version I thought you were referring to the Yaris Cross in more general terms. I have the 2023 Excel AWD model and love it apart from as you say the rear doors don't open very wide and a bit harsh over pot-holes with the 18in wheels. Fuel economy is better than the WLTP figures of 55mpg for the AWD model and regularly get 60+ mpg which I measure by the fuel put in which is about 3mpg less than the car says. I have on order the Premier Edition AWD and looking forward to the extra bit of power. Thought your review was great by the way - thanks.
Good review of a good car that is a little too cheap in key areas and is currently flooding European markets. Better smart hybrids than the Chinese electro swarms!
Toyota/Lexus know how to make automatic gearboxes. The Aisan box on conventional vehicles and the CVT on their hybrids. Both very good and certainly not as troublesome as some other companies efforts.
Very helpful review .I think you have helped me decide on this car .Any information regarding spare tyres ? No one ever talks about the spare tyre ?? I live in Regional Australia, so a spare is essential. Thanks for all your information ?
First of all, let me say thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I’m glad you’ve found the review helpful in deciding on your next car, and thank you for supporting the channel. You make a good point about not mentioning the spare wheel situation in cars. So that is something i need to address in future reviews. However on this occasion, I don’t honestly know what the Australian market car has or has not. Does it mention one on the Toyota Australia website?
@@houseofcars1973 ...ohh good point about the Aussie market.Apparently, Prior to 2024 the Yaris hybrid cross only supplied a patching kit .🥴Not good 👎In Australia we can be 100s of kms away from help .My drive to work is 50 kms along bushland roads . The 2024 models should have a half size tyre I believe .I shall keep investigating .Love your work .Thanks 👍
Went to check out the c-hr at the dealership the other day, found this instead. Liked visuals and inside more than the c-hr. Only concern is if it feels a bit too slow and boring?
On the verge of buying one, whats holding me back, is the thought of a wet timing belt. So many cars now use that system and threatens a massive bill to replace it or an engine replacement. So my question is, is it a chain, or rubber belt sitting in oil?
If you take out the maintenance scheme you can extend the warranty to 10years. I’m paying £30.88 per month for full coverage this includes servicing and the MOT test (after the car is over 3 years old). If the belt snaps it would be Toyota’s problem.
Yaris Cross's engine uses a metal timing chain that should last the lifetime of the car, instead of a rubber belt that requires changing at great cost every few years
Great Review I just brought 2024-05 model 115 HP love this car only thing I find the sun-shared feel very cheap, I could not stop LOL at the comparison with DAF CVT 1980 car with this one. totally different technology CVT
Very good , positive review . 62 MPG and 70MPG should surely warm the cockles of a thrifty Scottish heart on a dreek day . Are you sure you did not put a dram of Glenfiddich in the tank ?
Prices sky high has nothing to do with model of the car or brand All new and used cars are crazy expensive and all down to world and local poor economy
@@houseofcars1973great economy and reliability shouldn't be expensive for a small car! These prices are insane....and you journalist don't even mention it as a problem...
Yes I have just put down £500 on a new design version, but it’s strange that you have pick on the one issue I have, it’s the grey interior which I don’t like. My present Yaris has a loverly black interior. It’s seems the dealers keep me guessing over this issue, as they do not have a Design Model in the show room, and it is very hard to see the colouring on the internet.Could you let me know the models that have a black interior please it would help greatly.
Does anybody know if two adults and one baby seat can fit in the back row? I reckon it's going to be tight, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried that?
Thanks for that. We have had Excel with city pack for a year and getting 60+ mpg over 14000 miles. Looking at changing to premiere or maybe waiting for all electric version (2025?) Brother in law also interested in Yaris Cross but only usually does short journeys. Some forums suggest that there can sometimes be a possibility of the battery losing it's charge when the car is only used for short journeys or is left parked up for several days (eg at Airport) Does anyone have any info/views on this. We are really pleased with ours which is why we are happy to get another one.
I don't have the Yaris but do have a 2019 RAV4 hybrid. Have had it for a year and a half. I only do short journeys - typically about 10-15 miles a day and the 12v battery definitely does not get enough charge put back into it, particularly in the winter when the electrical loads such as heated seats, steering wheel, rear window heater etc are used a lot. I also have dogs and the electric tailgate is used a lot. There are lots of complaints online about Toyota hybrid cars having flat 12v batteries. So I got a battery bluetooth monitor and wired in a CTEK plug to the battery in the boot so I can monitor the voltage and recharge the 12v battery easily. My battery needs a boost about every week in winter, every 10-14 days in summer. I also carry a 12v jumper battery pack - keep it easily available under a front seat or glovebox and not in the boot. If you do short journeys and don't have a driveway or garage where you can recharge the 12v battery I would advise to think twice about a Toyota hybrid.
Think you have a faulty car.. have rav4 71 plate do short distances , sometimes sits on drive for days on ends... holidays abroad for 2 weeks at a time and its not once failed me @jimb7406
Very tempted to swap my 2015 ford focus diesel which is £0 road tax for one of these as I don’t do the miles now since covid. Has anyone drove the 115 and 130 bhp version, if so was there much diff? Also the excel doesn’t get the 130bhp engine
Tried both yesterday, the 130 is a tad faster to pick-up speed, but by a tad I mean a quarter of a second. In my opinion it is not worth the extra cost
The Yaris cross is a good choice if you can forgive the small back seat. The fuel economy is excellent and reliability should be top notch. If you need a bit more space consider the Honda Jazz .
I ordered an Excel on Saturday, not sure if I've done the right thing though. Currently have a 2.5 year old Karoq. Please comment as I have 28 days to change my mind.
Fair point. It is a small car, and the engine is quite willing, but I suppose it depends on the type of driving you do. Mostly urban, I wouldn’t worry. A lot of motorway, well it’s fine when it’s up to speed, but getting there means you need to be patient. Would your dealer offer you an extended test drive to finally put your mind at rest? 24 hours with the car should be enough to make you comfortable with your decision.
I have the same model, same year 2024, brand new from factory. Though with the one with 116HP. I genuinely dont think its worth 3000 euros extra for just that 14hp extra / 0,5 seconds faster accel + "sound dampening". 3000 euros is a lot btw.... I got mine called "Style edition" for only 26k euros. Paying by month, it costs me only 150 euros. I think thats a bargain. Not either a fan of this new Khaki color. I bought the silver shimmering color which I think looks excellent. But to each his own I guess. Though 130Hp and sound dampening is NOT worth 30k euros extra! And I honestly DONT understand all the complaints about Noise. WHICH NOISE?!? SERIOUSLY. You guys gone soft, really. Back in the days with manual cars, you are actually supposed to listen to the engine when shifting gears. You know what i think? People / you guys are getting spoiled!
@@gasmaska It would be difficult to thinking the battery still not working after 10 years. Many examples of fully electric vehicles still working as well as when they were new after 10 years and many thousands of miles.
Note it is not the hybrid battery that has died but rather the ignition start 12V battery . If this dies the car will not go and will need to be recharged . Herein lies the problem with the Yaris battery which I feel would need to be addressed by Toyota .
just bought one waiting for sept to collect may be my last car, re my age so i got my fire engine red as i used to drive them yrs ago now haha if as could as my rav 4 hirbrd will be happy
Cannot that glaring white background on that screen be changed to say, black or something darker? As it is it would be very distracting especially at night.

Toyota have a brand new all electric model coming out next year to replace or sit alongside this car, it looks very different too though. They seem to have several new all electric cars coming out, not that the Western governments have given them much choice.
The price difference between the lower and higher hp cars isn't worth it. If it was a thousand or two I'd probably go with the stronger engine....but it's a lot more than that.
2025 to all different markets except Thailand they have Yaris Lusso the 5th generation Yaris should look like all new Vios lets see the future Yaris Ativ thats the all new model based on Vios the model can come 2025 for Thailand also with Vios sedan .

I liked your review as its an honest review, but, You need to learn that full electric is out of the question for Toyota, why? They are not that stupid as the worst in electric cars will be arriving soon. Whatch out.
Gabble, gabble yet this man is slow to focus and describe actual features and layout. I gave up and used the subtitles instead. These are very good cars and although I preferred the less angular designs I read somewhere that side surfaces actually show better results in wind tunnel smoke tests. The eCVT Toyota and Daihatsu types are simpler and stronger than with other recent CVTs used by most manufacturers and 1st gear is a version of direct torque converter to save on transmission stress over the years. A major reason why Toyota never favoured 'pure' EV is because their research network correctly predicted that EVs will only be around for a single car generation. Weight issues, unstable chemical stored energy malfunctions and the upheaval needed for electric charging resulting in patchy availability just make them a bad option in large scale use. Thus, Toyota was not 'slow to produce an EV' so much as producing a few for EV fans. In Japan and the Pacific Rim EVs will continue for a while in dense urban areas where charging can break even and the target seems to be the taxi industry. Tesla is working on hybrid developments using hydrogen under license from Toyota. I will not be watching any more reviews by this presenter.
He gave the right information for me. Features are secondary. First is transmisson, steering, handling characterstics. The exact reason you need a car is for driving which requires these to know. One of the best videos explaining the transmission. Currently, driving a diesel DSG dry 115k km's fully satisfied with reliability and transmission. But atleast i know that an eCVT will do for me in future. Because i need that diesel fuel efficiency after this. As diesel cars are becoming less available. Only love about DSG is that overtaking is super punchy. Need of a country where people dont drive in lanes, so the faster one becomes the dominant and controls the wrongdoers. Lol. But thats the truth.
Apologies that you had to endure that, but this is how I review. The automotive TH-cam space is very crowded, and so in order for me to stand out, I give a bit more detail on the car I review and the marketplace it sits in. I try to aim my reviews at people who might be looking to actually buy the car, so the amount of detail I give is important - a hangover of me having been a car salesman for nearly 30 years I'm afraid. This won't be for everyone, so if you would rather watch people drag race cars, or skip over important pieces of information, this might not be your channel. If it isn't, the all I can say is thank you for giving its try and taking the time to comment. I do however plot it into chapters so you can find the relevant piece to you, but like I said, I know my style won't be everyone's cup of tea. Sorry if it isn't yours.

10:05 You can use the side pockets to store the fabric shelf. Twist it and store it.
Yes, I ordered this one, colour n all here in the Netherlands WITH a sunroof. It is slightly more expensive here due to taxation.
@@wilmaMOW I Hope you enjoy your new vehicle, certainly will save on fuel 😃
Great review....couple of things ...an all wheel drive is available and a sunroof is also an option ...toyota uses an e CVT (which uses planetary gears ) not belt driven - I have an excel and it's a great car for round town and is practical (as long as you don't have a family full of six footers). I would get another when it's due for replacement. I like your style of review so I have subscribed ... great work - thanks
@@wilmaMOWIs it an opening sunroof ? Here in UK they only offer a panoramic glass roof but non-opening.
Thank you.
We had 3 weeks in Thailand earlier in the year, 90% of cars there were Toyotas!
@@ThePhilvantwo Not true
less than 18k for the base model, cheaper than UK will get one to replace the old Vios
I'm on 50 000 miles in my lease Yaris. Getting a genuine (if the car is telling the truth) 70mpg. Really like the go-kart around town feel with the electric motor. Buying next but should it be this, the Jeep or the Duster?
I’ve driven the Jeep Avenger and the Duster. Take a look at the reviews.
@@houseofcars1973already watched your Duster one. You were very taken. I'll research reliability scores and warranty. Are these things differentiators? Toyota's reliability and 100 000 warranty (with servicing) is very tempting.
Toyota's warranty package is a goo done, and could be a big incentive for you.
A great review
Thank you.
Handling?
I kinda ❤it ...does it have airbags
The gearbox is an E-CVT - not a drive belt to be seen. I believe they use epicyclic gears and electric motors.
Is the Renault Captur e-tech hybrid a better overall car?
I must admit, I haven’t driven a Captur and I’m a big Renault fan. What I will say though is the Yaris is a great little car.
The colour is Urban Khaki - you said it’s not 4 wheel drive but there is an AWD version.
I know, and I correct myself on teh colour later in the review. I also know there is a 4WD model, but I was referring to the one I was testing.
We previously had the CHR and got this one this time around, much more comfortable, higher seats so vision better and more leg room in the back.
Yaris Cross's engine uses a metal timing chain that should last the lifetime of the car, instead of a rubber belt that requires changing at great cost every few years
The Yaris Cross has an E-CVT. It uses epicyclic gears and the electric motor. - totally different to a conventional CVT. No multi link steel belt.
Great Review I just brought 2024-05 model 115 HP love this car only thing I find the sun-shared feel very cheap, I could not stop LOL at the comparison with DAF CVT 1980 car with this one. totally different technology CVT
On the Yaris I’ve been getting 87mpg ❤ on the Yaris design
Running on Glenfiddich no doubt !

Very good , positive review . 62 MPG and 70MPG should surely warm the cockles of a thrifty Scottish heart on a dreek day . Are you sure you did not put a dram of Glenfiddich in the tank ?
We are getting 72 mpg out of ours, so cracking car, well pleased.
Crazy prices for what is a fairly cheaply made small car.
But will pay you back in great economy and reliability.
Prices sky high has nothing to do with model of the car or brand
All new and used cars are crazy expensive and all down to world and local poor economy

Excellent review. Would be good to see you test the revised Nissan Juke Hybrid which is a direct competitor.
Noted!
It is possible to spec 4x4 version in Europe at only €2k extra instead of front wheel drive.
If you need a bit more space consider the Honda Jazz .
waiting for mine.. coming in october
Self charging hybrid explains it well!
I ordered an Excel on Saturday, not sure if I've done the right thing though. Currently have a 2.5 year old Karoq. Please comment as I have 28 days to change my mind.
It’s a great little car the Yaris Cross. I have to admit, I haven’t driven the Karoq though. What is making you doubt your decision?
@@houseofcars1973 Hi, It's the lower powered version (116HP) not sure if it's got enough power?
Small car? Looks quite big to me!
Is it nousy ??😊
If a battery died, can I power up the car and can I drive a car?
As in the hybrid battery? Yes, you can still drive it if there is no power in the hybrid battery. It’s a petrol engine that drives the wheels.
@houseofcars1973 - thank you. So, after e.g. 10 years of battery warranty battery dies, I can only drive on petrol (power up and drive a car)?

Kinda annoying, isn’t it?
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the video. Thank you for watching as much as you did however.
Have a lie down
sorry but the first 10mins were litterally us staring at the car whilst you babbled on... just show us the car and what it has to offer
