- This is that BIG project I was talking about in my Under Stairs Closet Overhaul video last week. I spent a lot of time working through my new organization system throughout the whole process, and I believe my efforts really paid off. I know it's a bit (ok, extremely, really) long & rambly, & I am hoping to start working on some new filming & editing techniques to make my future OLJ videos more focused, less wobbly, & more to the point. Jen, you so inspire me. I married into the family home place that already had every room spoken for except the unfinished basement. This is the only space that I can do what ever I want to with. Unfortunately it is also the largest storage space we have too. I have been wanting to see your basement for over a year now, just to see what you do with such a utilitarian space. Thanks so much for sharing. I have renewed desire to go conquer the clutter down there!
Such fantastic advice at the end! Whenever I feel overwhelmed I "make a clean spot". I just organize a small space or some filing. It lightens the load and relieves the mind. Momentum usually takes over and I end up knocking out a lot! In any case, I loved this video...it was so inspiring! Jen, I'd love to see your weekly cleaning schedule and how you organize your general housekeeping. Thanks for sharing your hard work with us!
Jen,you have me pumped to continue my quest for an organized home.Your basement storage is to die for & you've made excellent use of your space.I organized my linen closet yesterday & got rid of over 50% of the items in there.Why I kept all that stuff I don't know but I do know that awful feeling each time that I opened that door.I love the euphoric feeling that I get from a freshly organized space.I can't stop myself from opening the door to the linen closet & admiring it's beauty.

I love, love, love this room. My aunt-in-law built a new house and it has three bedrooms in the basement alone. They took one bedroom and put floor to ceiling shelving around all four walls, then they put long, desk height shelving down the middle of the room. That is my absolute fav room in their house. Completely drool worthy!

I recently moved out from my old house and I invested in some good storage bin/boxes. Having my things safely corralled and safely wrapped it is so convenient in the long run. I labelled them and inside the boxes I included a list of content. it takes an extra effort, but in the long run when you can forget what you have, it is so easy to find and get things.
My family is in love with our Keurig & gladly take turns to use it at holiday parties. Plus it makes it easier when some people want car & some want decaf...

Jen, I have watched and rewatched this first as entertainment, then inspiration, then constant motivation as I tidied my room up--a first in WEEKS (MCATs will do that to you). So yes. "Enjoyed". Thank you soooo much for making such a great video. You've clearly put in a lot of work and I'm sure we all appreciate it. I do.
Instead of doing my homework like a good college going gal, I watched you for an hour. You have now inspired me to get motivated and clean out the spare bedroom and laundry room in mine and my boyfriends house. He works 80 hours a week. (Ok maybe not that many, but he is on call 24hours). The rooms are a mess. The cats totally didnt help that matter. :/ Plan on getting on it TOMORROW!! THanks Jen!

I love to see others organize & reorganize like I do. It's nice all your stuff is in one room. Mines all in basement but in 3 or 4 areas do to the design
I organize my Xmas ornaments by room also. It is so easy to set-up for Christmas that way--as most of us tend to put things in the same place year after year. Organizing the bins by room is also helpful when you come across that stray decoration that you missed when putting everything away--just locate the box of the room that it belongs to, and you're able to put it away in the right spot--quickly and easily! Love your project--beautiful job! Congrats!
I didn't think you could top your master bedroom closet videos, but you've done it! I didn't even notice it was 50 min long until after I watched it. Guess it is time for me to tackle the basement and the garage. I love the OLJ channel.
I use all Elfa shelving components from the Container Store. It is quite easy if you measure everything out & use a little elbow grease! Having a great power drill that you're comfortable using is a must have!
I like using the term "project" because it makes it seem less like a chore & more like a journey :)
I love watching your organization videos, they always inspire me to do the same. My baby is due in April and I want to get our place organized and ready before she is born. Watching your videos light a fire in me to get moving
I've been on an "organizing kick" for a few months now and knowing that others are doing it to is fun. I had the reverse problem, a climate controlled attic/upstairs room space that became a catch all for everything not in use. I cleaned it up and managed to organize everything without purchasing one more piece of plastic. Once I started purging I had all kinds of bins and baskets. Lastly, you're absolutely right that there is a calmness to living in an organized home......and mind. :-)
You can't please all of the people all of the time, but you HAVE pleased me. I am leaving my opinion hoping that it will counter-balance some of the comments that might make you doubt yourself or the value of what you are doing. I know how much time I spend on my blog, and how demoralizing it is to read the few comments that seem to feel that they get to vote on HOW I share what I share for free, and how nice it is when someone comments that they don't agree. Do your best not to take IN the comments of the entitled.
For what it's worth, I do NOT find it "very hard to watch through 50 minutes of talk and talk and talk" (one *opinion* and a bit snarky, IMHO) - I find it delightfully refreshing. Part of what I LIKE about your channels is your "real person" conversational style. I also don't find myself "lost" (i.e., "without any way of knowing where is what"). My mind may work more like yours, perhaps, but I find everything very easy to follow, and I appreciate the obvious time you take sharing your tips and techniques (and life!) with anyone watching.
I also don't consider the intro-chat time "wasted." I would hate to see you dilute your style by attempting to edit yourself or script your intros. (How much TIME do these commenters think vloggers have for pre-production planning and post-production editing? This is not some blockbuster film anybody purchased a ticket to see, right?)
FYI, and just a bit off-topic - I jumped here from your Winnie channel, which I find worth its weight in gold. One look at Winnie and it is obvious that you absolutely know what you are doing, yet you are always careful to say that this is what works for you and Winnie (and that others may find something else works better for them). I have had multiple Shih Tzu for over 30 years now, yet I have tried quite a few things you have shared that have been helpful with my 15-week-old Christmas puppy. That's WHY I decided to check out your take on organizing - for myself and for my clients.

Watched this while eating my lunch. Just what I needed . Jen you are such a hard working housewife! You have inspired this old girl (I'm old enough to be your mom...actually I have a child your age) to get in there and re do all of the areas I have been putting off. In the process of doing that wih my kitchen right now, I have thrown away or given away so much stuff. Don't know why it tool me so long! LOL
I have little spots here & there in cupboards on the main level where I stash my teapots & pitchers...everything else usually stays out. My antique teacup collection goes into the bins where my Christmas china lives when I swap out that display.
You did such a great job!!!!!!! my storage and laundry room is a big mess now but you totally inspired me to finally organize it...and my main reason why i didnt get there is because it is really big project and nobody see that space....thank you for inspiration))))))
Wonderful job Jen. Though your videos you have inspired me to reorganize my linen closet, the storage of my christmas decorations, my pantry & kitchen cardboards and all my closets (for me & my 3 kids). I think you did an awesome job on this space. It looks like a huge room but you have made good use of it. And by going through each bin and labeling them you know what you have which is so important. Great work. Currently working on my basement to be completed before Dec. 30th.

I do have a lot of my more precious figurines still stored in their original boxes. I just like to pick & choose which things are important to store like that & which are not to save space.
Great use of space. Nice job, Jen! As a side note, we are required to bring old paint cans to our local fire station and they will dispose of them safely for us.
I did make popcorn and watch full screen. LOL.I got some great ideas from it. It really inspired me to make some changes. Thanks Jen!
You are an inspiration!!!! Great job! I always enjoy your videos and wisdom. The project I have been working on you ask? Ugh, my parents are going to rent out one of their condos. I volunteered to tile the floor in the main living/dining/kitchen & foyer area, back porch and bathroom. Sore? I know that word well, 16" ceramic tiles....over 400 sq.ft. It has been 3 weeks. I'm 5'2" (48 years old) and a single mom to a teenage young lady. Girls rule!!! We can do absolutely anything!!!
We'll have at 2 on the main level, one in the basement, & 1-2 smaller ones upstairs. I'm a bit of a Christmas decoration fanatic!

Oh, a paint can storage tip: when I paint a room a new color, I fill a pint or quart sized canning jar full of that paint. I label the jar with the room/color. I still keep the big gallon (if there is that much leftover) for years but this way I can do a quick touch up. It helps me to not procrastinate because it is a small jar that is easy to open and close (I just dip in a disposable foam brush) and I keep the jars at eye level in the front of my small utility closet. Grab and go.

It's funny cuz ever since I've started watching you I've started calling things projects instead of cleaning or organizing or whatever. I recently did my office which is where I do all my school work so it's so refreshing bc I feel way more focused in there now that its not paper pile overload.

Wow! I kept thinking "how much of a project could a utility room be?" but boy did I underestimate the workload! My utility room (well, my house in general) is tiny so i couldn't fathom! You did a great job!
It looks wonderful. I'm truly inspired to start working on my storage area. I wish I would have bought the same kind of bins. I have a mish mash of colors and styles.
It's the same size as our first floor & dug extra deep for high ceilings.

Excellent!!! Dump Half of the stuff in bag, and only lift half empty bins, and then once where you want it, fill iit. I have an index box with location card and contents! i give numbers to all containers. I use 13 gallon tubs!

WOW! LOVED IT! What an enormous organizational project! I'm exhausted just thinking of all the energy necessary to complete such a big project. Fantastic job, Jen! Woo Hoo! I think you will continue feel great with an immense sense of accomplishment every time you walk in your newly organized space. I love how you left some "growing room" for new acquisitions. My storage room in my basement & my garage are next on my list to tackle. Yikes! Perhaps this is the inspiration I needed to get started.

In my town in New England every year in June we have a hazardous waste day and that is where I take my old paint cans. You might want to check with your town hall.

What a great job. Lots of work and all so well done. Way too much for one person but you pulled it off. Installing all that Elfa is very tiring and hard work. I wish I had that in me to do it. I need to do my closet so bad. I am a lot older than you, could actually be your mom so I don't have that energy to do it but would love it if you could come to my house and help. LOL.

Amazing transformation! For me, living with lots of unorganized stuff all around actually clutters my mind. Getting things organized is very freeing for the mind, don't you think? You worked hard you deserve kudos and lots of pats on the back!

your hard work really payed off!!! I know the uploading of this video was strenuous as well, however you did an outstanding job with cleaning, dusting, organizing and putting up new storage. this was inspiring and I hope that I can workin my way around this fall to tidy up my apartment to have a new sort of begining and just feel good.
