  • I bought this faulty Sony PlayStation VR Headset on eBay as part of a job lot. It was, obviously, untested... turns out it has display issues and has a flickering image on the screen.
Let's see if we can fix it!
    Hope you enjoy!
    Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

That's one heck of a deal, Steve. Funny how one split wire can render something unusable. Love it when it's something this easy to fix, although this one was tricky to pin down. Good job!

Take a look at the Playstation 3D TV at some point. The EPROMs keep dying on it and was never addressed by Sony, they dropped it a year and a half after release. A $500 paper weight unless you have good soldering skills and an EPROM programmer (or pay $15 on eBay).

The best thing I've found Steve other than heat shrink, is a very short 1/2" or so
of self amalgamating tape. Stretch it really thin then wrap it around the soldered
wire. Satelite and tv aerial installers use this tape every day to seal water out of
    co-axial cable and their connectors.

    Nice job Steve
Something we’d do on aircraft cabling was to split the heat shrink down its length, wrap it around the cable loom and then superglue the overlapping edge - then heatshrink it
I’m not going to pretend it was pretty, and so your tape solution may be the better result as it doesn’t get exposed to any nasty environment

I can't believe you were able to fix this. It's the exact problem my brother's V1 headset had. For him, he would store it in a drawer when not in use, so the cord got so tangled that over time there must have been potentially even just a single wire damaged. No one in a 100 mile radius of me would have the skills to fix that shit.

  • @MondoMurderface

I've fixed several VR headset but never a PSVR one. You gotta have the finest touch to go near those WMR screens. They are as thin as tracing paper and shatter at the slightest tweak. You are very lucky it wasn't a screen.

You could try to cut a large heatshrink (you can get them plenty large) up spirally, then shrink it. It will overlap because of the spiral cut. Use a few dots of superglue on the ends to hold it in place. I use Everbuild Stick 2, that is proper epic stuff
oh, and it's "duct tape" used to repair ducts in days of yore

Nice videos mate 👍 like watching your repairs - TH-cam started recommending them to me and I’ve been watching them ever since.. wish I had your technical knowledge and setup to be able to do similar stuff..
Ps think you can get heat shrink tape now that you roll around over itself (slightly overlapped) then heat it up for an enclosed bond.. haven’t used it myself but been in similar situations with wiring before.
I was initially thinking maybe chopping the damaged section out and you re solder a junction Board / box inline; but that’s a lot of work and then you have a chunky box hanging inline…
    Cheers for the content 👍👊

  • @MizuhoChan
    @MizuhoChan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The two methods I would've looked at for heatshrinking are to either open the headset, desolder all the wires, put some over, then resolder, or cut the headshrink in like a spiral, so you can spiral it over the cable, yet you haven't technically cut it in half. Works better on thicker cables.

    • @Infiniti25

40 pin wide flat solid connector in the headset...would have to cut the wire clean, slide on some heat shrink then then and resolder each of the approximately 34 wires back together, + the aluminium sheath

its duct tape, also called duck tape, after the dutch word, doek, wich properly translated is cloth but bad translation made it duck, and duct-duck tape was made with doek/duck/cloth

I know that guilty feeling of wrapping duct tape or insulation tape, I'd rather cut the wire in two parts, put the ample amount of heat shrink for outer cable, strip those tiny wire ends, join with boot lugs or tiny terminals with thin pvc coating and complete the job. Sure it leaves a bulge in the cable but at least looks better than the tape.

Can you please tell me what kind of heat shrink tubing you use and how ya put it on? And how ya got it over the small wires? Is it heat shrink tape?

I'm the kind of guy who would find the damaged part of the cable, cut off six inches on either side of the break, and join everything back together 😁

It is a sensor that detects if someone is wearing it. It will dim/turn off otherwise which wouldn't be very helpful when trying to do a repair like this. Covering it up will fool it into thinking someone is using it so it will stay on.
