This kind of convinced me. I dont play the PS5 enough on the weekends when I have the chance because it is a hassle to basically shunt everyone out of the way for it, and staying up late to do it is a bit difficult if you are tired. I travel a fair bit for work and family reasons and one thing that does get at me is down time where I could be doing something else, TH-cam often ending up being the best option. As I live in Japan, I think the wifi will usually be up to the task and my PS5 is connected by cable. However, I have bought a number of other things in the past which I didnt really use so I am a bit cautious. This rundown helped a lot as always, thanks MJR!
You can try remote playing through the phone app a bit to see how it fits your needs. If you feel the idea is cool, but needs dedicated controls and a big screen, Portal fits perfectly for you.

I'm glad this works for people who want to play their PS games on the go, but I'd rather just bring my dedicated non-streaming handheld for those situations like my Steam Deck or Switch and work on those backlogs instead so i dont have to deal with any of the hoops you have to jump through (finding wifi, logging in every time, lag, etc..)
One of my buddies keeps trying to tell me I need to get this. The problem is I don’t have any digital games and if I’m going to play video games in the bedroom or on travel I’d much rather use my Switch instead.
@@BarretinJapanthat's a good idea but unfortunately that opens it to piracy. Pirates have erased the trust of the public and they won't do it. Stupid pirates.
i just finally got my ps5 a few weeks back but miss remembered i can’t remote play using the ps vita . any ideas i put the comment here as i agree with u if mj got the portal he can move the ps5 upstairs or let u have a playstation portal of ur own
Except that the PSP could run games locally. The fact that the PS Portal can't do that is a massive oversight on a mobile device that might not always have access to a high bandwidth Internet connection.
Love mine, recently been playing bg3 on my bed when wife is busy on her phone. Also even using it on the hospital wifi during my daughter chemo treatments. Not always perfect at the hospital but for slow paced game its fine enough
It's been possible since PS3. The psp has PS3 remote play, ps vita has ps3/4 remote play and phones/tablets do PS4/5 remote play. It's been a thing for a very long time.
Sitting on the fence for this. Is it worth getting with a virgin media 300mbps internet and an ethernet cabled PS5? The kids usually take over the telly and there's only so much Peppa Pig i can take.
The biggest con for me is that you can only associate one PS5 user at a time with the PS Portal. Meaning, if you want to play as a different user, you literally have to reset the connection of the PS5 and do all of the setup work just to use a different user from the console. I wish MJR mentioned that cause that is one of the biggest cons imo. If you’re a sole user, then it doesn't matter. But this is a huge overight.
@@georgemarkaryan6941You are not mistaken. I'm also not sure WHY an adult wouldn't have their own game console and need to change users in the first place.
Since I don’t travel a whole lot, and when I rarely do, I’m the one that’s driving, I don’t see a need for this. I’ll just keep playing my switch lite when I need to play on the go. In this way, I can still play anywhere and not have to worry about Wi-Fi.
I would have bought this if it wasn’t remote play I would like to see Sony creating a portable handheld that can run all of our digital games natively.
Thanks for the review. I still don't understand how this can work so well with your PS5 in Seattle and you in Norway, and I work in IT. It's like magic to me.
The amount of care and deliberation this thing has gotten from Sony is INSANE. Starting from the brilliant packaging itself, to how the buttons and triggered are re-sized for handheld with a gorgeous screen (which btw is moulded to the body and not just slapped on) to boot is pure perfection. Definitely a great buy!
I've heard crazy things about this device. People initially hating it and now they really enjoy using it. People bought it , sold it and now regret doing so. I personally bought it and still have it despite being a hater at first. It has a very mixed reception but still sells incredibly well. Ergonomically it's very well made. Probably in my top 3 most natural and comfortable handhelds I've ever used.
I remember when I wanted it, I saw people saying they would never use and I was like nah that won’t be me. It was me. Don’t buy this as you won’t use it bc it’s not that easy to play on. You might want it bc you want to chill on the couch and play or whatever but trust me you will end up very quickly not use it and just play your ps5. Trust me and don’t be like me and get it anyway bc you will regret it
Im also physical collector, but some small games or daily games, did that purpose in digitally. I mean how many games do you wanna play🤷♂️ I only playing 2 mostly of the time.
@@joshramirez7 LOL, they’re still making disc and digital consoles, so it's still a choice. PlayStation 6 and Nintendo still gonna have a disc and cartridges.
Ive had mine since day 1, and it's always worked away from home. The public wifi was the issue. I took it 300 miles to my sisters house the weekend it came out, and it worked well.
I was the same way when this first came out. I couldn't see a use case for it. Then I kept using my friend's when hanging out and finally picked one up for myself last week.
I’m one of the biggest Playstation guys out there but I personally cannot ever justify buying this thing.. the connection issues are way too prevalent, in Australia anyway
I’m located in Torquay, Victoria and it works fine. Very useful for use around the house especially. PS5 connected to Ethernet is essentially key to the best and most optimal Portal experience. Wouldn’t rely solely on WiFi connection. I traveled down to Melbourne the other week and literally had no issues with lag, to my surprise.

I was reluctant to get a Portal at first myself but I also game at work on night shift. It's a factory job and all the big wigs are gone so we take hour long breaks like 6 times in a 12 hour shift. So plenty of time to game. I at first was lugging around a Tab S8 ultra which is a 15 inch oled but I also had to bring a controller, headphones, etc. This is basically a all in one. I got a carrying case for it that also stores my headphones, wired charger and battery bank. I leave it and it fits perfectly in my locker at work. Now I personally don't play the "pretty games" like God of War, Ghosts of Tsushima, etc. I save that for my home theatre. I use this to mainly play my backlog of PS4 games like RDR1 thats 1080p or games that require a lot of grinding MK Invasions. I save the best looking games to experience on the big screen.
I love my Playstation Portal, but would have loved a successor to the Vita. I just don't think most consumers quite understood what the Portal was made for. Not being able to pair any bluetooth earbud/headphones to it is still incredibly lame though.
I keep seeing stutters in the gameplay of the footage here and that's a big turn off for me, if this had better streaming performance than just using my phone with a backbone or my steam deck to remote play my PS5 that'd be something but it really doesn't.
It still doesn't make sense at its price point seeing as it can't run any games locally while a handheld PC (Steam Deck for example) or an Android phone with a controller attachment can both remotely play PS5 games while being able to run games and other software locally.
I've had the portal since day 1 i use it away on long weekends . Used it on vacation in hawaii (i live in florida 4,600 miles away) worked flawlessly in the home i rented. Glad i have it i take my ps5 wherever i go.
I bought the Portal when it first came out. I was soo excited to be able to play my PS5 games when the rest of the family wants to watch TV. My ps5 is hardwired and I have Gig ethernet. Unfortunately, this thing CONSTANTLY disconnects even using my own home network. When it works, it's great, but the constant disconnects made me put this device back in my closet. Very disappointed to say the least. I might give it another shot since you were mentioning firmware updates. Maybe that will help with the connectivity issues. I can't even imagine playing this device across the world like you are. I'm shocked you even got it to connect! But good for you Jason! Thanks for the review and have fun over there!
Yeah i would say that is the main problem with the portal if you lose connection it’s pretty much useless as it doesn’t have games on the device itself, handheld pcs are much better
Hilarious, I currently live in Oslo so one of your travel tours came up in my feed. I watched it today. Great content. Tonight I saw someone talking about the portal andthought “I forgot all about the PS portal, I wonder how it is” search…… and here you are again 🤣
My logitech G cloud plays my home XBOX, PS5, PS4, Dreamcast, Saturn, N64, NES, SNES, Genesis, Turbografix, Android, and all my other retro games...with no issues...and actually been doing it before the portal even came out...and the best thing it has a 12hour battery life. Very happy with my purchase.
@@MetalJesusRocks That's great! I know it can vary a lot throughout the country. Thanks for the great video! We all appreciate that detailed information you provide.
I must admit that the screen is gorgeous. Having said that, I’m happy using my phone with my Backbone controller. I can play Xbox, PlayStation, Netflix games, Apple Arcade etc. I have no silly headphone restrictions, and it is half the price (or cheaper on sale).
Best video I have seen across TH-cam explaining in detail with experience abt the Portal. Thank you so much it has really shaped my perspective abt it.
the latency in devices like these are a huge issue for me. as soon as i notice it, i can't stop thinking about it and it destroys the experience for me.
I'm pretty sure sony never said you'd only be able to play at home. There were just some roadblocks using PUBLIC hotspots. Just bad communication on sonys end.
These are perfect to pick up for half off at a pawn shop. At that point it would be a justifiable purchase without question. Really anything 150 and lower in price.
You mentioned why, despite owning a PS5 with a disc drive, I opted to buy almost all of my games digitally. I knew at some point there would be a way to remote into the PS5 with some device and I wanted to have access to everything when I'm away from home
You could buy a Steam Deck and remote play to your PS5 the same way, except you would also have access to Steam, Emulators etc... and a bunch of other stuff.
@@peterhoniotes6142 it's about £100 more than a PS Portal but can do a lot more with it, making a steam account takes 5 minutes. The only thing you're losing is the dual sense features.
As a over the road truck driver that leaves home for atleast couple weeks at a time and can't use the ps5...i think this little toy will definitely work great for me. Playing an hour or 2 after a long day of driving will definitely be a great way to relax. Could probably do my daily contracts in TnL...lol Thanks for the video
I’m still on the fence, as a truck driver, im not sure how many Wi-Fi places ill come into contact with and my phones hotspot wouldn’t be good to use and my collection is nearly 100 percent physical, and buying a digital copy along side a physical game i own, several more updates, with they would have made a PSP3 ish even if it looked like this but i hope they keep trying new handheld things and keep updating this and don’t just throw it away like the Vita…. Thanx 4 the video….MJR I don’t think it was a waste of $
I would say get a steam deck or similar handheld pc I have the rog ally which is awesome for playing pc games, multiple emulators and an internet browser anywhere you want
It’s amazing to me how many people are not very sensitive to input lag. It drives me absolutely crazy, and I’d much rather not play a game than play it with input lag. I’ve taken a lot of steps to have a little lag as possible, and I know that not everything is made for everyone. I just feel like they could’ve done better and this is really expensive for what it is. At this point you could just get an iPad and throw a controller in your bag.
I am with you 100% it is a great device! On the other hand I have to say one thing. I had been looking for ways to play with little hustle. I got xbox ultimate which let's you play on the PC directly or on the cloud to the phone or ipad with no install etc. It is the best thing ever. I have a fold 4 with Xbox remote that fits my phone in the middle. It is simply amazing. Yes it does cost per month but games also cost. I have always been a PS guy all the way back to PS1 but I am blown away from Microsofts offering. I also don't need to upgrade my PC so often anymore. Pretty nuts
I don't travel much, and even when I do, that's time for my handhelds to get their play. In the house, I have plenty of games and TVs to play on, and I can already remote play my PS3 or 4 with the Vita, though that's really more of a novelty than anything, or play the Wii U on the tablet, or Switch... heck, even my Nomad. The PS Portal seems pretty irrelevant unless you're in a very specific cross-section of people who travel a lot, mostly buy digital, don't play on a laptop, tablet, or Steamdeck, and don't play portable consoles.
The required internet connection is still a big turn off for people. Paying $200 for something that can only do remote play when things like the Switch and Steam Deck can play games offline. You would only buy this if you already had a PS5. The Playstation Portal is still a product with no worth to it what so ever. This is a paperweight offline. Like the Series S will be when the Microsoft store shuts down in 10 years.
@@LampHatScott if I were to get a portable device, I would personally get the Steam Deck. I have much more games on there since my PC is my main gaming machine. Everything else is on the PS5 and Series X. Would anyone recommend the Switch on 2024? I was thinking of getting one for a while.
I got one with vouchers from work. Honestly thrilled with it, that extra 30 mins playing in bed, or even playing on the sofa in the living room when my eyes are bad. It’s great. I did have problems getting my PS5 to wake from sleep, but found a tip on Reddit about restoring settings that fixed it.
Ah it's the ps vita hypocrite that doesn't like the ps portal. Blame yourself for not buying the ps vita in 2011 and letting sony abandon the ps vita. It's the fans fault for vita. Not sony😂
I bought mine about a week ago. This video convinced me to take the leap. And now, I've used this more than the console because I can game from my bed and such lol. And as in the video, there is some latency, but I've done arcade runs in hard of Soul Calibur 6, some matches of Fighterz, even PVP in Titanfall 2 and it's all great. Biggest issue in my case is that the sticks are longer so for FPSs it takes some time getting used to.
I preordered one as soon as they were available because I knew it had plenty of potential and would be totally practical. Since launch, I use it whenever I’m at my in-laws and also enjoyed it during my Hawaiian vacation last July. I also got the Edge earbuds to complete the experience; furthermore, I picked up a silicone case and travel bag for it cheaply from Amazon.
No way I would travel with my portal. All it takes is the quickest power blip for your PS5 to not respond requiring you to go to it physically to reset it. There is no way to do a hard reboot from the Portal side. I love Sony but they have been dropping the ball left and right in this generation. Very frustrating.
@@justsomeguy2743 I'm a hardcore Sony fan. They dropped the ball big time and it doesn't help that this generation is horrible to begin with. Can't remember the last time I played my PS5. It's been nothing but switch, steam deck and retro this whole generation for me.
@@justsomeguy2743They should have done a PSP3 with better hardware and a more basic cut down version that would be the PSP 3 lite, Aka this thing, but with more features, because it didn't have to be quite this limited, but there certainly is a place for both a full on handheld and a simple handheld dedicated to streaming and basic tasks. It's a missed opportunity among many missed opportunities...
That's odd I have been playing all kinds of games on the PS5 sure first party is a little light this year but then again I have a nice PC Rig and Steam to tide me over.😊
A steam deck + Chiaki app = remote PS5 play too. Also, there is an official PS App to remote play PS4/PS5 games on your computer/laptop + using PS controller (so it works while you travel).
I luv my portal. I too was on the fence but after the firmware updates it made this a much easier purchase as you have pointed out in the video. As a dad, I can be anywhere in the house and not miss out on AAA gaming or family time and playing whatever. Also the controller makes this the most comfortable handheld I've ever used even compared to steam deck, switch, etc.

@@MetalJesusRocks heckk yeaah, I've been following the adventures since the old retro console reviews and your cool stuff you find and buy lol Much love to you guys :)
I've really been considering getting one of these... Literally so I can lounge, relax wherever around my home and property and play. Sometimes after a long day at work I don't want to sit on the couch where the PS5 is - I want to sit on the porch and enjoy the outside... or even jsjut go to bed and put on the TV - the portal seems a realistic way I'd use my PS5 and games more
Still a waste of money imo. For most people, they can get a controller for their phone and not only have remote access to their PlayStation, but Steam library on their computer. Then if you pay a gamepass subscription, you have Xbox games as well. Not to mention emulators for so many previous generations of game systems and android/iOS games. Sure, if you want a bigger screen or if your phone is not great maybe this could be an option. I'd recommend a Razer Kishi controller, but there are a bunch of alternatives like a Gamesir or Backbone. Not supporting bluetooth in favor for their proprietary wireless connection isn't consumer friendly.
@@ryans413 Don't get me wrong, the Portal seems like a high quality device, it just seems limited compared to other options available that people should consider as well. I have a Kishi Ultra with a Galaxy S23 and it just has more capability. Sure you can say the phone is 1000 bucks, but I already had it.

20 years old magic. You could use a Psp and a ps3 to do exactly the same back then
Except that the PSP could run games locally. The fact that the PS Portal can't do that is a massive oversight on a mobile device that might not always have access to a high bandwidth Internet connection.
True, but bandwidth and increased Internet speeds have made it a lot more reliable
The games that did that on the PSP were very limited, though. The PS Vita with a PS4 or PS5 is probably closer to this.
@@beatnicksodyssey PS vita also did it with PS3 and i believe was more expanded than with psp.
Damn I miss the PSP 😞

It's been possible since PS3. The psp has PS3 remote play, ps vita has ps3/4 remote play and phones/tablets do PS4/5 remote play. It's been a thing for a very long time.
I have the same thought and feeling whenever i power up my OLED Steam Deck.

Sitting on the fence for this. Is it worth getting with a virgin media 300mbps internet and an ethernet cabled PS5? The kids usually take over the telly and there's only so much Peppa Pig i can take.
Your internet speed doesn’t matter if you plan to just play it locally. Your router does. Id say its worth it if you have the right setup
If I’m not mistaken, it was addressed in the latest patch
@@georgemarkaryan6941You are not mistaken. I'm also not sure WHY an adult wouldn't have their own game console and need to change users in the first place.
@thotsunemiku I don't why being an adult is relevant to this. It's about people who share the same console in the same household.
@georgemarkaryan6941 Just checked and still unable to use a different profile.
Aaannd I'm out. If my gf can't easily use this too, using her own ps5 then it's useless to us
does anyone else feel like this is the beginning of the PS6 as a main hub with expandable clients throughout the house?
Since I don’t travel a whole lot, and when I rarely do, I’m the one that’s driving, I don’t see a need for this. I’ll just keep playing my switch lite when I need to play on the go. In this way, I can still play anywhere and not have to worry about Wi-Fi.
Exactly
I would have bought this if it wasn’t remote play I would like to see Sony creating a portable handheld that can run all of our digital games natively.

Thanks for the review. I still don't understand how this can work so well with your PS5 in Seattle and you in Norway, and I work in IT. It's like magic to me.
Compression of data is the magic.

Ive had mine since day 1, and it's always worked away from home. The public wifi was the issue. I took it 300 miles to my sisters house the weekend it came out, and it worked well.
Great video, helped me understand how the Portal actually works. For $200 I think it’s a good buy to play your ps5 games on the go
I was the same way when this first came out. I couldn't see a use case for it. Then I kept using my friend's when hanging out and finally picked one up for myself last week.
I’m one of the biggest Playstation guys out there but I personally cannot ever justify buying this thing.. the connection issues are way too prevalent, in Australia anyway
I have issues with it as well. But I do have bad internet simply cuz I'm not home enough. May upgrade.
And I also love PS.

Same in Canada and the US. I feel like this is sponsored because every con he calls a pro which is just funny.
I've been enjoying it too, i end up using it more than sitting in front of my tv, convenient and easy, it also frees up the TV for the family
Had it for about a week now and having a blast. It makes grinding in Granblue Fantasy Relink so much easier

They should add other basic features like being an actual tablet too.
I've had the portal since day 1 i use it away on long weekends . Used it on vacation in hawaii (i live in florida 4,600 miles away) worked flawlessly in the home i rented. Glad i have it i take my ps5 wherever i go.

Pretty nuts
I had one of these and it just didn't make sense to keep it. The steam deck can do the same thing.
Yeah I would say that was the best decision
I don't travel much, and even when I do, that's time for my handhelds to get their play. In the house, I have plenty of games and TVs to play on, and I can already remote play my PS3 or 4 with the Vita, though that's really more of a novelty than anything, or play the Wii U on the tablet, or Switch... heck, even my Nomad. The PS Portal seems pretty irrelevant unless you're in a very specific cross-section of people who travel a lot, mostly buy digital, don't play on a laptop, tablet, or Steamdeck, and don't play portable consoles.
Yeah I would say it’s a pretty niche device I have an rog ally handheld pc and don’t own a ps5 so I’m not buying one
The required internet connection is still a big turn off for people. Paying $200 for something that can only do remote play when things like the Switch and Steam Deck can play games offline. No way I would travel with my portal. All it takes is the quickest power blip for your PS5 to not respond requiring you to go to it physically to reset it.
