I know in California they passed a Right to Repair bill that is fairly decent IMO. One of the huge issues is the ESA was able to get game consoles exempt from R2R which absolutely sucks.
I would like to see training be included as part of the Right to Repair campaign. Having a right is meaningless if someone is unable to exercise it. I, for example, have literally no technical skills, tools, or even a proper workspace. Without these things, a Right to Repair my own devices is of no value to me.
@@williamharris8367 That will happen on its own faster than any legeslative change Right to repair means they cannot prevent you from aquiring the skills and parts anymore : Manuals and shcematics are now fair play and cannot be "sued away" for copyright infringement anymore Neither can they prevent you from buying parts from sellers : See Apple siezing legit parts/defective units at customs cause they have the apple logo on them. They have to prove counterfeit and trademark misuse intent to get them
@@williamharris8367 They literally don't care....its not their problem if someone doesn't know what they're doing and makes it worse, nor do the companies care if someone tries to repair their own thing. The problem is the people who try to repair something, make it worse and then try to either sell it to someone without telling them its borked or they try to get "free repairs" from the manufacturer. Its not rocket science that a company will not repair or replace something free after someone opens it up themselves, there is zero way to verify that it was broken before someone opened it or if they broke it opening it to mod, hack etc. the thing. There are also ALOT of trash people who try to buy the warranty from the store and then every year right before it ends they try to bring it in for exchange
It probably doesn't help that a lot of people are trying to play quick twitch type of games I see a lot of people in Reddit doing that with the systems. Those type of games like call of Duty or fighting games are pretty brutal on a regular controller and people are trying to do this with a portable controller with smaller joysticks.. I've had mine for 6 months no issues I play single player games 95% of the time You might catch me in helldivers or maybe final fantasy 14 online but other than that those other games I save for my controller when I'm at home.
NO....Just NO....People need to be punished for filing stupid, pointless lawsuits to stop lawsuits to begin with...NOBODY but the lawyers win with class actions they're literally take 60% of the money. MAYBE people who want "super high" build quality need to quit expecting welfare or coupon day pricing on things
Hey brother, I was kind of running your video as background noise, I've been a long-time viewer though, and when I saw you on camera I thought, "Man, he doesn't look good, hope everything's okay..." Then I read the comment section and realized what was going on. So sorry to hear you're going through this and I'll be praying for you and your family as you go through this fight. Cancer took my sister and my 11-year-old niece is fighting her own battle right now. Stay strong, lots of love and respect.
I've watched your videos for a few years now, always enjoyed them from the start. My mom was recently diagnosed with skin cancer. Seeing you power through it like the unstoppable machine you are gives me a lot of hope. I enjoyed your content before, but now your videos help me cope. Hope to see more soon.
Hope you’re doing well ♥️ I got to the end of the video and thought, instead of having nearly all of them not fixable, why not take out some joysticks that are working on some and swap them with the broken ones. For instance, having 2 devices where the left joystick isn’t working, take out a right one and swap it on the left of a device, that way you have at least 1 working ps portal for every 2?
Indeed, they are selling hall effect triggers for it, I'm guessing the originals are also hall effect ones. The price is marginally justifiable, considering how expensive the broken ones were
The original are resistance Stick. You can see that on the contacts that move on the Black surface. The same sticks like the Normal in the switch joycon

Wow man. I was not aware of what it is you're dealing with currently. But having read some comments, I see now and want you to know you're an absolute champion for still making the content despite this temporary situation. My mother had stage three cancer in 2016 and spent a year and some change going to every chemo session with her. So I understand just how exhausting and scary it can be all at once. She was cancer free after that time and has remained ever since. I wish you the best with your treatments. You seem to be in good spirits and that's one of the most important things when it comes to your health and well-being. Especially while enduring chemo. God bless and I'll continue to watch the videos and watching your progress. Be well ❤

Steve, I'll be honest, I've never soldered in my life, but I've watched practically all of your videos. It's amazing how dedicated you are to fixing all the electronics you get your hands on. I look forward to your new video every day. Thank you for your work! You are amazing!
It's disgusting that manufacturers create products in such a way that they are nearly impossible to open and repair properly, and that there are no spare parts available.
First thing to that comes to mind when I think of impossible to get into are PS3 controllers and new generation iPhones. PS5 pro controller should be the standard when it comes to being able to fix our things. Just make the parts modular. I know some people aren't as tech savvy when it comes to self repair but if it was just easier to remove and replace parts that wouldn't be a problem.
@@Kakeen I'd imagine simply whispering "modular" anywhere near the vicinity of Sony HQ (or any large corpo for that matter) would be enough to get you kicked out of the door. It's a surefire way to make things repairable and last longer. It would also mean more profits for them if they sold the replacement parts but that also means more work for them and they figure it would be just as good to try to sell you another unit when yours break.. But then the question is why buy something in the first place if you know it is built to fail asap? The more they push the failure state to happen sooner, the more it will backfire in sales. This Portal case seems like it's past the " do not buy" line for me already. I was surprised by the design of the PS5 pro controller because of this. Maybe its a way for them to test the waters and see how profitable it is that way. But it also costs a lot more for us than the regular one.... I am really tired of all those mindgames already, to the point of only buying things I absolutely need and only if they are of decent quality (or the cheapest ones if the quality cannot be confirmed). The trust that products will last at least their warranty period and buying blindly is long gone.
It's not that hard if you have a bit of practice. Just get started fixing things, they all tend to have similar processes. And it is satisfying to diagnose and fix them
Hey Steve, been a fan for a while now and I dont remember commenting ever. I hope you are well. You look very strong and im glad you are still doing what you love. All the best wishes and take care.
Hey men, just opened up this video and just wanna wish you to get better fast! I fix smarthphones and computers by myself and in many ways you've been a huge influencer onthis note... Hope you get better soon! Keep up the good work
Yep, I've seen more for sale in lots like this too. Not sure how widespread these issues are but they seem to affect quite a few of them based on my Google searches.
They are useless unless you have a PS5 that's always connected to your homes wifi it only streams games from your PS5 console. And you need good wifi if ur using it out and about.
I preordered it and probably played it for half an hour. The latency makes it almost unplayable I’ve had it sitting in the box since. Wonder if I could make some money selling it to niche ps fans in a couple years lol
i was really waiting this video, i really love the architecture of the Portal and i LOVE using it everyday almost, especially now that i am far from home, this is a game changer and it works super fine. I’m treating this like a treasure because of how fragile it may be so, remember guys to clean the Portal and if you want to travel around with it, put it in a Laptop-like soft case inside a bag so it won’t get hit by accident.
I haven't seen any posts from you about your condition, if you've even made any. I hate hearing about it when you mentioned it late last year. I've been a subscriber of yours for at least 5 years. I just wanted to know if things are looking good for you?
Device from 2023 and Sony still didn't learn that material scratching in analogs causes that it will damage over time. I know they had to cut price, but still, oh god.
Planned obsolescence. Using scraping potentiometers and sheet metal which will always break. Hall effect sticks are on the market for YEARS now and they are still not using it.
Man I learned how to clean my ps5 and my kids Xbox series X from you. I’m sorry to hear that you’re going through chemo. I pray you have a full recovery. Thank you for continuing to make content.
Hope you are doing well with the chemo. Been there myself in recent years so know what a drain it is on you. Remaining positive is the best way as that can only help your recovery.
Your videos are always so amazing to watch. You actually inspired me to start my own youtube channel, and I would always go to your videos to help figure out how to fix my own consoles.
Hey Steve. Love the content! Just a comment for that “grease” you were wondering about. On power tools the triggers all use the same technology as those thumb-sticks. They use electrical lubricant to help with conductivity and the sliding of those contact points. You need to buy your own supply if you plan on continuing to repair those thumb sticks in the future. I have my own for repairing my power tools. Great job on everything you post! Keep up the hard work and I hope you a speedy recovery!
Ngl im super impressed on how simple the circuit is inside those joystick modules, just a flatten out potentiometer, really smart engineearing, shame they seem to desingage unintentionally like those 2 you had, such a simple fix and hard to fix because of those metal tabs. Also they insist on using potentiometer based systems that wear out, give it a year of normal use and you will start to see the black strip get faded as it gets grinded away by the metal contacts just like a regular joystick, causing drift or jittering, that grease you saw is probably there to reduce friction and make it last longer and work smoother but it won't stop the normal wear of it
I haven't binged your videos in a few months so it was a shock seeing you having to fight the big C but im rooting for you and gonna watch all the videos I missed wishing you all the best!

I gotta say at 3 min into the video I can already appreciate your professionalism. Good structure and what I find to be a solid process 💪🏼👍. Now back to the rest of the video 😂
Love your videos !! Keep going on ! I'm working in electronics and for the thumb stick you teardown, the black things on the flexPCB are the serigraphic resistors and by moving the Metal slide on to it, it changes the ouput voltage (that's a voltage divider) that is converted with ADCs to numerical signals. This are basically two linear potentiometers, one for X axis and the other for Y axis. The grease applied on it is to remove some frictions. Frictions are the biggest issue with analog stick. It removes some material (here serigraphy parts) and makes Analog sticks not working. As the difference with the Edge Controller that has Hall effect sensors (magnetic field). Whising you a speedy recovery, stay strong !

@@williamharris8367 That will happen on its own faster than any legeslative change
Right to repair means they cannot prevent you from aquiring the skills and parts anymore :
Manuals and shcematics are now fair play and cannot be "sued away" for copyright infringement anymore
Neither can they prevent you from buying parts from sellers : See Apple siezing legit parts/defective units at customs cause they have the apple logo on them. They have to prove counterfeit and trademark misuse intent to get them
Why would they pass a law if consoles are not included in this law? That's outrageously crazy.😢
@@williamharris8367The due diligence is on you to either learn, or pay someone that has put in the time to learn.
Because of you I bought my first Sodder and tool kit to pull apart computers and i been fixing all my electronics. Thank you.
Sony needs a lawsuit or something. those sticks are clearly junk and not even tested proper. so most will proberly fail
That ate Normal sticks and the elements are Seminar to the sticks in the joycon.
The are Not Design to Opel and repair.
Its cheaper to replace them
It probably doesn't help that a lot of people are trying to play quick twitch type of games I see a lot of people in Reddit doing that with the systems.
Hey brother, I was kind of running your video as background noise, I've been a long-time viewer though, and when I saw you on camera I thought, "Man, he doesn't look good, hope everything's okay..."
Then I read the comment section and realized what was going on. So sorry to hear you're going through this and I'll be praying for you and your family as you go through this fight.
Cancer took my sister and my 11-year-old niece is fighting her own battle right now. Stay strong, lots of love and respect.
great to see you looking so good my friend
I've watched your videos for a few years now, always enjoyed them from the start. My mom was recently diagnosed with skin cancer. Seeing you power through it like the unstoppable machine you are gives me a lot of hope.
I enjoyed your content before, but now your videos help me cope. Hope to see more soon.
You're the man Steve! All the best to you!
Hey Steve, I just looked on Amazon and AliExpress and it seems they do have replacement sticks for the PS Portal. 😊
Hi Steve, I'm from the Philippines. You inspired me to get back into my first love, repairing consoles, way back in 2015. I've seen a lot of your repair videos and they're great! Please stay positive man and keep inspiring people. 😇🤜
$180 used for something that costs $199.99 new...
Supply and demand, I guess
That's how a lot of things are these days. I don't understand it.
Same thing with steam decks. People buying for more than new, and they are available.
I would pay the extra 40 bucks and just have the manufacturer warranty or store return.
Sold my used and slightly battered Quest 2 128GB for 220 dollars a few weeks ago. Couldn't believe my luck.
You are truly more than a content creator, seeing how you went out of your way to break that last one to figure out what the problem was, while showing us speaks volumes of your dedication to make repairs viable and available for everyone.
I hope you are getting better. I love your content and you are sparking a great interest in my to learn more about electronics repair.
I wish I had half your skill, youre a legend Steve!
Be well ❤
I wonder what this liquid is... him spraying 2 the analog stick 2 minutes before XD I got the same memory as you, literally a gold fish! Love your content :)
@@zaborg17 the electronic contact cleaner evaporates itself at room temperature in some seconds. Probably the líquid was grease for the contact
The liquid was grease that they put inside the analog stick to keep them lubricated.
@Tronicsfix yeah they use it on cordless tools on the trigger switch I think bosch started the trend.
@@Tronicsfix i saw it later on the second stick, sorry if i seemed rude on the comment, didn’t mean to :(

i wish i could subscribe again for your detail and thoroughness.

So good to hear this!
I know, they suck
Thats why i didnt buy it. It is made to break
It's not that hard if you have a bit of practice. Just get started fixing things, they all tend to have similar processes. And it is satisfying to diagnose and fix them
Stay strong Steve don't give up,I watch your show for 2 years & it is great, Keep doing what you doing I'll keep you in my prayers 🙏🙏🕊️😇
Great video as always!
Glad you enjoyed!
Hey Steve, been a fan for a while now and I dont remember commenting ever. I hope you are well. You look very strong and im glad you are still doing what you love. All the best wishes and take care.
great vid tronics
Hey men, just opened up this video and just wanna wish you to get better fast! I fix smarthphones and computers by myself and in many ways you've been a huge influencer onthis note...
Hope you get better soon! Keep up the good work
Eleven?! Good gravy
Yep, I've seen more for sale in lots like this too. Not sure how widespread these issues are but they seem to affect quite a few of them based on my Google searches.
Great fixes, Steve. Shame about the ones you can’t get parts for, but hopefully they will be available somehow soon.
Yeah, that's what I'm hoping.
This was super interesting! Your videos usually are but to see the little components of the stick was incredible.
I didn't even know these things existed

@@Tronicsfix amazing news. You keep electronics alive. The universe needs to do right by you

Wishing and praying for your speedy recovery Sir!! I really enjoy your videos and have learned.
God bless.
sony loves making e-waste
Al the best to your recovery, man. Wish you a speedy recovery. ✌🏼
Device from 2023 and Sony still didn't learn that material scratching in analogs causes that it will damage over time. I know they had to cut price, but still, oh god.
IKR, an extra tenner and slap some decent HALLs in them.
@@GriotDNB ... Is "Hall" an acronym?

You are strong 💪!!! On chemo and still acting like nothing has happened. I hope you recover well!
I just read your blog and I am glad you doing better. All good vibes your way.
27:20 Amazing that you literally picked apart the problem to present a clear issue reveal.
Good have you come show videos while chemo... That's amazing how strong you stand up fight cancer. I'm enjoy with your mañy videos always taughted me learn faster through your videos Steve... Awesome God bless all TH-camrs too...
I gotta say at 3 min into the video I can already appreciate your professionalism. Good structure and what I find to be a solid process 💪🏼👍. Now back to the rest of the video 😂
Wow 😮 when you popped off the back of the first portal, it made my leg flinch with the popping sound!
So much love and respect for this guy.
Always thinking outside the box, fixing what can’t be fixed by the average person.
Keep up the good work!
Just found your channel and I love it man. Very nice work.
Side note: I find it absolutely HILARIOUS that all of these were probably broken due to rage.

Dude, i had no idea you are going through chemo, your resilience is admirable, keep up the stellar work dude !!! All will be good for you brother !!!
Very nice, and the right to repair is definitely a good mention!
You can probably borrow the thumbsticks and caps from some of the ones you dont have parts for, to repair the others. That way you'll have more working devices and fewer ones to get replacement parts for later.
Hey Tronic, get well man. my best wishes to you and your family. Thxx for all the videos

That was awesome, thank you for taking one of the thumbsticks apart in a way that allowed to validate the issue. Seems like this might be a common occurrence. Perhaps on dropped units.
