I'm struggling with appropriate words..Rarely, I find a video that forbids me to stop watching..Tha narration is inspiring and educational..Your craftsmanship leaves me in awe! Thank you for sharing my new favorite!
Such a great video. Perfect blend of woodworking and philosophy. And I learned something new! I've never seen a hinge made that way and now I can't WAIT to try that technique. Most channels pander for a subscribe. You earned yours.
Wow , that left me speechless. I think of all the woodworking videos I have ever seen and nothing compares to this. Glad I found your channel, just subscribed
I have order many of Barry's keepsake treasure boxes and each and everyone has been a hit with the receipient. Thanks for sharing this video, now I know how much expertise and craftmanship goes into the making these the treasures.
Thank you so much for sharing your skills, knowledge and wisdom. I want to make pieces that will bring happiness, and will be cherished now and in the future.
What a wonderful video. I recently made five keepsake boxes for each of my grandchildren. All the while I was making them I thought of all the treasures they might add to them over the years. In each one I put something for them to remember me by. Especially liked what you made these for, my wife is a Clemson alumni.
I just discovered your channel and I am really blown away ... wisdom & woodworking. Please continue to make videos. I feel like you've made me a better a woodworker and an even better person.
Absolutely loved watching this video, you’re a true craftsman that is making a lasting memory for whomever is lucky enough to receive one of your keepsake boxes. You have received a new subscriber from me, look forward to watching all of your videos. Also enjoyed your introductory commentary.
Thank you for sharing! This is a very humbling video! Absolutely beautiful work! You are a very talented artist! I tell everyone make a box and focus on keeping it square to begin with and watch everything start changing the way you approach everything you make in the future experience will eventually prevail!
That format video is so enjoyable to watch. Your skills are 1st rate my friend. Beautiful monologue to describe the meaning of the box and the boxes themselves are gorgeous. you should have way more subscribers. Keep going you will grow for sure.
Excellent video. I have never seen that dovetail jig. I always cut mine by hand but this is really neat. Kind of like the Leigh dovetail jig but looks way cheaper! Rob Cosman sells hinge jig bits that have the centering pin within the bit. Almost the same thing you have but saves one small step. I’ve been thinking of getting one to try these. So neat. Thanks for sharing this story.
Thanks! That is a Keller Dovetail jig and as far as tools go, yeah, it’s not expensive at all. I got the jig from Rob Cosman about 4 to 5 years ago and learned to do this from him. Rob is a wealth of great information. Thanks for watching!
Howdy, love what you do. Hoping for some input here. I'm going to try to do something like your wood hinges. My idea isn't all that practical for mass production, but I wanted to run it by you to see if there's something I'm not thinking of. I was going to put a couple of slab ends piece on end and cut the hinge dowels with holes in it using my CNC. I'll over build them and cherry pick the best ones. Might use different woods. Then run a brass rod through it. paste wax the rod and between the dowels and glue on the end dowels but leave the brass exposed on the ends.
I've got more to ask, but the first one is the most important to me. I want to line the box with 1/8 inch of cedar and have been thinking if its better to laminate them before I glue up, or miter it and laminate it after the fact. And if I do it that way, how do I clamp it. small clamps and reverse them to push is all I can come up with.
That is something I’d like to see pictures of. I have often thought my hinges would work better and be easier to make if I used a solid rod through the middle. I’d be interested to see how yours turns out.
When I make these boxes into humidors, I usually miter the ends of a solid piece. If I were to laminate them I believe I would do so before and give them time to dry and move as much as they’re going to.
@@The1842com Oh, I'm not laminating... maybe alternating the dowel hinges. I could have been more clear on that. I think you're saying I'm good... so thank you!
@@The1842com I'll do my best to remember to tag you. I'm only worried it being too loose. In my head, there's an advantage to the tiny offsets from the welding rod pieces which gives a little needed friction to the open/close
Since I became disabled five years ago I have lost most of the ability to do anything with my hands. I even drop silverware sometimes. So I watch a lot of woodworking videos Justin keep connected. but this video was far more than that for me. It was beautiful and inspiring and honestly makes me a little “homesick“ for what I used to be able to do. This is something that would have inspired me to make a beautiful box for my little girl. I’m so happy that you realize your gift and have so much love for the process. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you. This is instantly my new favorite channel. Do you sell these boxes?
I had a video on my TH-cam page where I did the hinges but not sure it is any better. I am putting together something now to make one in more detail. Thanks for the question.
I don’t. The deeper “inward” you cut the channel for the hinge, the less it will open before the top will hit the back. The more you move the position of the hinge towards the outside of the box, the more it will open. Not to say I haven’t been forced to put a chain in a couple, but if done correctly I shouldn’t have to. I plan on doing a more detailed video that explains how this works.
Amazing work! I create keepsake boxes as well and find your hinge exceptional! could you provide a link for the hinge center drill jig? I've been looking but either can't find it to I'm using the wrong search terms.
Yes Sir. The man that I bought mine from is Rob Cosman. Here is a link to that page. When you make some, make sure I get to see them! robcosman.com/collections/woodhinge

Awesome Video. Great narrative. The hinge design is very unique.
Thank you! I’m working on a more detailed video for the hinges. I hope you’ll come back and watch! I appreciate your time!!
I couldn't have said it. Better myself about box making. I've never heard anybody talk about box making like the way you did.
Sounds like we have the same feeling about making things for other people. Thanks for watching!
This video was an absolute beautiful thing to watch! Loved all your words my friend!
Thank you!
I like to make boxes. I saved this to watch over and over. I need to explore that hinge method.
Thanks for the save. I hope you get something from it. Maybe I can do a more detailed video on the hinges.
Thank you so much for sharing your skills, knowledge and wisdom. I want to make pieces that will bring happiness, and will be cherished now and in the future.

It was spiritual, and that is what woodworking does for me!

Thank you SO much! I truly appreciate the kind words!
Loved the Neil Peart reference!
I’ve been a drummer forever. He was never NOT my hero.
@@The1842comNeil would have appreciated your philosophical approach to your work. Neil was pretty much every teenage boy in the 80’s hero.

IM going to ask here: Do you have a more in-depth video on that style of hinge making?
I had a video on my TH-cam page where I did the hinges but not sure it is any better. I am putting together something now to make one in more detail. Thanks for the question.
Thanks

do ya put a chain inside to prevent it over stressing the hinge?
