From one woodworker to another; great workmanship my friend! I have the same tools from good ole Rob Cosman, in fact, (I’ve bought several of his tools over the years). My customers all talk about the wooden hinges. You are right, they are definitely worth taking the time to do. I loved the soothing sound of your voice too. I have liked your video and was going to subscribe, but alas there is no SUBSCRIBE button to be found. “The 1842” I have written that down, and will check back from time to time. ☮️

@The1842 Barry this video is my introduction to your channel. You popped up in my feed. At the age of 50, I find myself reinventing myself and my life. I've been to hell and back so many times they installed a revolving door with my name on it. These last few years have been particularly rough for me. So here's me relearning woodworking and learning new things so I can start my own woodworking business repurposing and refurbishing items to keep them out of the landfill.
I woke up before my alarm this morning and couldn't get back to sleep. Since I believe a smart person should learn something new every day, I hopped on TH-cam university and there you were! Your words and your mother's words of wisdom ...wow...still resonating so hard I had to write them inside the front cover of my research scribbler! I had to pause and rewind to make sure I didn't miss any of it. I kid you not! I had to pause it and cry as I felt something release inside my heart, my mind...dare I say my soul?! Almost like little pops of pain letting go and suddenly I can breathe a little bit more.
What you said...truly words to live by my friend! I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I subscribed after hearing the cadence of your voice, your words of wisdom and watching your attention to detail...however I must say you are wrong on one thing. There is nothing simple about those hinges! Just about anyone can slap a hunk of metal on and call it done. Your hinges...that's quality craftsmanship rarely found in our throw away world!
As I raised my boys I would frequently remind them of some things. Like "Just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD do something!" It was usually because they just did something stupid or dangerous...lol. Apparently it must have sunk into my eldest because the school principal heard him saying it to some kids pulling a prank...bahaha. The other thing I would tell them is "Be careful what you do or say because what you do or say can affect other people. Is what you are doing positive or negative. You may not even know it but what you do or say matters. Manners matter so do the right thing even if it's hard."
Today...you have affected me here in Nova Scotia and I thank you. I had to stop the video to tell you this. I'm looking forward to the rest of it.

Thank you Sir. I have no words to express my gratitude for your message. This and this alone is the reason I do these videos. I want to remind people that we have so much to be grateful for and if we have been blessed with a gift, to share it with as many as possible.
You and I were raised by a generation that taught us respect, honor and compassion. If I can give anyone any advice in what they do it would be to put that into your work. It IS what will set you apart from the pack. I have no doubt you will succeed in your endeavors! If I can help you, let me know.

Thanks for sharing the whole process including your so relatable mistake.
Rob Cosman has given the wood working community so much invaluable information and tools, but the asking price for that dowel hinge kit is a bit steep for what it is if you're only doing a few of these a year imo. An idea occured to me perhaps trying to use a 1/4" drive metric (for imperial size dowels) socket to hold dowel tightly, then use a VIX centering bit in the square end. Dunno if it'll work just a idea that popped in my head.

@The1842 Wow...powerful words in the beginning, beautiful craftsmanship in the middle and powerful meaning in the end...now that's a video worth watching! Thanks for the lesson! Definitely shared it.
I'm from the "life is short with no guarantees" school of thought. I often say work smarter not harder because my body is filled with arthritis, etc. I love a good tool or jig. "Right tool for the right job!" As the saying goes.
I see you like a good jig too. I see you have a lot of dowel drilling to do as well. Your soft sided clamp gave me an idea for your shop. Why not make a grippy style clamp to hold 10 dowels vertically at a time? Then setup a fence on a drill press to run the clamp along instead of constantly fitting the little dowel thingy. Your hands must be sore after all that dowel drilling! Take a long strip of wood, drill a series of holes vertically slightly larger than your dowels. It should fully encase the dowels to provide full length support. Rip down the center of the holes. Using a brush, coat each half with a thin coat of silicone to stop the dowels from spinning while drilling. Put a hinge on one end and a locking pin on the other for simplicity of use. Make a few them so you can set them up in batches. Not only will this make it easier on your hands, but it will remove the frustration of switching back and forth between drills. It will speed the process up so you have more time to play with your adorable furry foreman! Besides which...it will make your dowels more consistent on the inside.
I've recently repaired a jewellery box for a friend. She lost many things in a flood. During my research I discovered you can get really nice miniature hardware for legs and handles. You said you were looking for ways to set your work apart...dark brass or bronze would look great on those boxes! However, a thought occurred to me...considering what those boxes are for (peace to the fallen and thank you for serving your country and mine.). Don't the warriors get a purple heart for saving others? I'm not American so please forgive my lack of knowledge on this. Why not make 4 legs or a base from purple heart wood! Can't get more symbolic than that. Like if you made one for an athlete to hold their medals you could use bronze, silver or gold for the legs.
I have a process question (trying to learn). When you make your dowels...do you get less blow-out and more consistency on the drill through your cool jig or on the router? I need to set something up and I'm limited on supplies. My hand planing skills suck because I've only learned it from TH-cam university. Would it look OK if I used a round over bit with the router on both edges of the same side of a board then cut the opposite edge off the board on the table saw? In theory it would be round on the hinge side and flat on the surface...a "fake" dowel...lol.

I think whatever method you used to get that thing to be the size needed, you should do. A friend of mine has always said, “ If it works is it really a dumb idea “?
