def if you have the a6000 or a6300 only, the 10-18 is a must. Even if you have your full frame with the zeiss, sometimes you wanna go light just grab the a6000 and the 10-18 for your trip.
I rolls with the 16-35 on the A7R II. I did want a 10mm, and found the Voigtlander 10mm f/5.6 Heliar-Hyper Wide for FE mount. This is an amazing wide angle with no fisheye effect. Great vid.
I shoot stills only and shoot in tandem with an A7iii and A6600... My Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens lives on my A7iii while I use either the 10-18mm or the 70-350mm Sony lens on the crop format A6600. The 10-18mm matches very well with the Tamron and the 70-350mm also matches very will with that lens. The advantages of the 10-18mm and 70-350mm lenses on the A6600 are their small form factors which make carrying the second camera relatively easy... The OSS on the crop format lenses combined with the IBIS of the A6600 allows me to shoot at slow shutter speeds. I have been able to get sufficiently sharp imagery from the A6600 and 70-350mm lens at 1//20 second while extended to 350mm.
Great video bud. I'm all set with an 18-35 rn, but will definitely look out for more lens videos from you soon! This was definitely helpful in at least giving me information about lenses I was considering! :) Keep em' coming!
Don't understand why the 10/18 is cropped on a sony 6500. What is that lens designed for what camera? Enjoy your tutorials. Going to get a 6500. What are good lenses for it. Thanks
this was a nice thorough video. that wooden desk looked massive next to your bed bc of the wide angle though. I have a gimbal coming in soon and I've considered both. the 24mm range is what I looking for. what about the 25 Batis or even the 28/2 with the wide adapter? -Joe
Please calculate (crop factor): 16 x 1,5 = 24 mm 35 x 1,5 = 52,5 mm that ist not really wide angle 10 x 1,5 = 15 mm that ist quite wide in case of APS-C sensonr 18 x 1,5 = 27 mm that is quite "normal"
This was super useful, thanks. I'm trying to think of a good vlog setup for a trip I have coming up. I'm thinking 10-18mm on A7rII in crop/super 35 mode. It's light weight enough and image quality for video is solid.
I have the 6300 and have been using the 18-105 for vlogging but I would really like to have something a little bit wider (and lighter) for day to day use and then have the 18-105 as a secondary lens to use on occasions. Would you recommend it for that?
Good to know! One other question. Does it make noise trying to focus when in autofocus mode? Ive heard that some Sony lenses will do that so I really want to avoid any that do.
Does anyone know why some of Sony's lenses come in the orange box and some in the white box? Are they being sold in different countries or is one packaging older than the other?
Just got the Sony A6300 and will use it with a Canon 50mm/1.4 that I bought years ago for my old 70D. Aside from the 50mm/ 1.4, what other lens do you suggest I add? My next trip will be in Mexico for a wedding if that helps. I would just hate to buy another lens that's similar to the one I already have.....Looking for a little variation
great comparrison man!I have the A7S and the 10-18mm and I think im gonna upgrade to the 16-35mm just because of barrol distortion, it goes crazy at any focal lenght, people should be aware of that also ;) cheers!
You can actually go to 18mm in full frame on the 10-18 mm if you remove a little bit of plastique at the back of the lens , pretty easy to do , just a little screw
Great video! I love the 10-18 for Gimbal work on my a6000. I can switch between the 10-18 and my 35 mm 1.8 on the Zhiyun Crane and not throw off the balance. Great combo.
I got a Sony a5100 with a F4 10-18mm lens. And when I shoot in manual mode at F4, the video looks extremely flat and looks nothing like yours. Is the image quality because of my a5100?
Great video Do you recommend using the 16-35mm on a6300 for photography, I actually have the 10-18 for landscape and since 16-35mm is equivalent to 24-52 on aps-c i thought they would make a great combination
the a6500 has a great video feature called clear image zoom, where you can crop in 2.0x to the sensor and keep full 4k pixel readout (instead of downsample from 6.5 to 4k on super 35mm). I am considering switching my 10-18mm to 16-35mm f/4 for my gimbal setup, since I can effectively reach to 100mm with clear image zoom. is the 16-35 problematic to fly on a zhiyun crane??
you miss the point of the 10-18 on aps-c because in 35mm equivalent is like a 15-27mm which is surely a good range for super wide to wide in FF terms. Would be nice to reach 30mm but still not bad.
+NOBA TECH you called it limited like a 15 to 27mm effective range is very uncommon. if it was a true 10-18 then yes it will be weirder since it will be an all ultra wide zoom but that is not the case. THAT is my point.
Keep making these Sony videos! This helped out a ton! I'm now set on the a6500 + 10-18mm. I know this lens will be great for TH-cam and for shooting while traveling. Keep it up!
Great review! Congrats! I think i'll go for the 16-35 (i also use both Full Frame and APS-C) but i'm curious: how about shooting some portrait at the long end (35mm) on Full Frame? What kind of blur does the 16-35 eventually provides?
good video! but im wondering, how far the distance between ur stand point and the camera?? inside your room and when u're outside. this is will help me to choose the lens.. thanks
By usable I mean on full frame camera :). It doesn't affect the flare resistance too as far as I tested... I use it on 7r2 and with some custom made profiles from internet the distortion is correctable. It is also big fun to shoot at 12mm on full frame.
if i have to choose, either a6300 + 10-18 OR a7ii + 16-35 mainly for landscape use, which one would you recommend? Is the image quality of the full frame combined with 16-35 significantly better than a6300 with 10-18, or just small difference only?
Nice video :) Have you tried the 12mm F/2.8 Touit lens? I have a hard time deciding between this and Sony 10-18mm. 95% stills, landscapes and travelling. For a6300. Thanks for any suggestions! :)
So i've been shooting on a canon t5i for a while and its time to step my game up. I'm leaning towards the a6300 because its a beast but finding a lens to pair with it is making it so hard. I want something with autofocus, wide would be fantastic and of course stabilization is great too, but I can't spend more than 400-500 on a lens. Any suggestions or should I just break the bank and go big?
Thank U for this video, I have to buy the A6500 and I was struggling about the lens choose and now I don’t have no doubt to get the 10-18 mm because on C-sensor the 16-35 is not so wide 👍
Hello! I am confused and I need some help! At 4:11 you say that your APSC lens still has a crop factor on your APSC camera has a crop factor. I thought that the sony lenses for APSC would not have a crop factor because they were designed for their APSC cameras, thanks if you respond!
This is all very confusing.... bear with me, I am a complete amateur. If I fit this lens to my A6000....... am I going to get a 10mm wide angle or not ? I'm looking to replace my 16mm pancake plus converter because if I take images that have tall objects in the side of the frame ( like a light house or a church tower) the tall object appears to lean into the centre of the image.......
Hey, question for you, is that white box the US or the International version of the Sel1018? I just ordered 2 from best buy and got one in a white box and one in an orange box.
+NOBA TECH im a lil bit confused, so basically i can use non full frame lens on a7 series? and i also can use full frame lens on apsc camera? im using a5100.
Quick Question: I'm a vlogger, and wanted to know exactly how far away from the camera were you when you were shooting with the 16-35 on your A6300? Would that set up be ideal at arms length (with a joby tripod) to capture my face at a fair distance? Or would it be too close to my face? I ask, because I currently use a Canon 70D with a Sigma 16-35 F1.8 and that length seems to be fine, since they are APS-C design to APS-C. But since the A6300 is an APS-C and the Sony 16-35 is full frame, I'm not sure how it would look. Thank you!
Hey Noba, where did you get that nice wooden hot shoe cover? Which brand is it? I think It's unique for Sony Alpha models, right? Thank you in advance, cheers from Italy!
Look at it this way the Canon 11-24 is USD 2,899/- and the 10-18 is USD 800/- So the 10-18 is the best way to go down to 12 mm on the Sony full frame without an adapter and on the A6000/6300 it is an essential piece of wide angle glass! So if I had to chose one wide angle to share between the two Sony cameras FF and Crop I would go for the 10-18 every time. For the 24-35 range of FF you now have the awesome 24-70 f/2.8 G Master!
Hey man great video, gave me a good idea of everything! I'm buying an a6500 soon and was wondering if you think the 16-35 is a good all around lens for things like cinema montages, music videos, and lifestyle stuff (like vlogs)? Also is it a sharp lens? That's one of my large concerns as I am new to Sony. Thank you!
IMO the 18 to 105 is same as the zeiss in image quality, bigger range and non extending operation. Does not have as much as close distance, but for an overall great lens the 18 105 is better.
hi I'm looking at buying the new A6500 because I've heard that the A6300 overheats. Do you find that a problem with your 6300 would you still recommend it - I'm going to use it on a Crane stabalizer.
thank you for your review. now I really confuse to switch to sony Fullframe but I can't find the great affordable wide-angle lens such as 10-18 on APSC , 12-24 price is extremely high
This is incorrect. If you even examine your own footage you'll see. At 10mm you can see its much wider than the 16mm on the SEL1635Z, you even comment on the SEL1018Z zoomed in to "about" 15mm where it gives a similar FOV as the 16mm FF lens. Mostly focal lengths written on lenses are their true focal lengths with respect to 35mm film/FF sensors. There is no equivalence calculation done on the focal length when using an APS-C lens on a FF camera unless the lens manufacturer is strange and puts equivalent FL markings on their lenses (like compact cameras often have). The 1.5 crop factor is from the APS-C sensor being used, so in fact when using the 10-18 on the A6000 it gives an equivalent of 15-27mm FOV. Using the 16-35 gives equivalent of 24-52 FOV on APS-C sensor.
Cool video thanks helped me alot :) Got a A7RII and am thinking about getting the 10-18mm. Even with APS-C on i still have about 18-19MP which really is enough for most purpose except printing very large photos and for post online it is more than enough.
Hi, Very informative. Thanks :) I have a question. I am really considering this lens, but what worries me is the distortion. When I look at your table even at the sweet spot 15mm it looks very weird due to the wavy distortion. On the other hand I do not understand why it distort so much as it is actually near the sweet spot where the distortion should be quite negligible. Did you switch on auto lens correction for this video? Would be really good to know as I am considering it for some architecture videos.
Hey Noba Tech. Just wondering, I just bought the 10mm-18mm for my Sony Alpha a6000 and it looks really great on the a6000 from some videos I've been watching on TH-cam (Getting mine 10mm tomorrow) lol but my question is, should I upgrade to the Sony Alpha 6300? I'm going to be Vloging in Japan in 2 weeks and want your opinion on if I should upgrade or not?
Thanks for your help! ^_^ jw, do you think the new Sony Alpha a6400 will have a headphone jack? will it becoming out soon if you know? That would be the best TH-cam camera ever if you ask me lol
thank you so much dude! now i understand what's full frame and apsc, and cropping, and vignetting. if it wasn't for this video i wouldn't have known this and still probably confused. thank you!
Very very usefull video dude, many thx . I have a question, I wanted to buy 16mm 2.8 with the wide converter for my a6500 so it gives me 10mm but I saw that is very bad sharped lense, so any comperation btw 16mm and 10mm? Especialy about the sharpness factor I donno of u have any info about the other lens 16mm! Thx again
Your presentation is very good but that focal length comparison is not accurate. You don't apply crop factor to lens made for APSC that's why it's called apsc lens. Those lenses have almost the same field of view. And if you get an ultra wide lens for the tele end then you're doing it wrong lol ☺✌
Rafa R you're actually wrong you know. Focal length is the distance between the convergence point of the light, and the sensor. The only difference between a crop lens, and a full frame lens, is the size of the projected circle. A crop lens on a full frame body would just look slightly wider, with heavy vignetting. Crop lenses only do exactly that, crop the image. I hope this was easy to understand.
@MJR07 I'm pretty sure you didnt understand me because You didnt address anything that I was talking about. I said that these lenses, on their respective sensor sized camera, yield about the same field of view. Based on the sensor crop factor for sony sensors 1.5x. Lenses are not "cropping" anything, the "crop" refers to apsc sized sensors that are a crop of the full frame sensors and the lenses are made to match. The physics of the lens dont change based on the camera (sensor), The sensor can either see more or less of what each lens provides based on it's size. Hope this was easy to understand.
Let me see if i get it. Basically the problem is that NOBA TECH said that when you put a full frame lens on a aps-c camera, the image gets narrower because of the lens, when its actually just about the croped sensor in itself. Is that it??
he was correct there, that's not it. It was a nice video. The issue is applying a crop factor to a lens that is physically and specifically made to fit the apsc sensor. Only a full frame lens is subject to a crop factor.
what is the difference on 16-35 mm Vs. 16-70 mm lens? both are Zeiss lens but, besides focal length what would be the difference? the 16-35 mm cost more, but nobody can seem to tell me why.
I was incorrect in thinking that apertures convert depending on sensor size; the Sony 16-35mm still has an F4 aperture when used on an aps-c camera. It won't make the image brighter because it doesn't direct all that light onto the smaller sensor, otherwise the field of view would also be wider.
10-18mm is the focal length... This is a caracteristic of a lens, the size of the sensor behind it is irrelevant when we are talking about the focal length. The crop factor is only to approximate the FOV on a "traditionnal" camera
That is not how it works. An apsc lens is different than a full frame lens. 10mm apsc lens on and apsc camera that it is made for has the same field of view as the 16mm ff lens on ff Camera. These lenses are almost the same as far as field of view known their respective bodies (16-35 is a little longer like 10-24mm apsc lens.)
Great video man, different light funny and informative, keep going. Just wish sony ad a more wide lense for full frame in a more affordable price. I am thinking in sigma maybe
Love ur videos so crispy..Great job.. all the effort u put on these videos thats outstanding.. respect for that. I am thinking of buying a6300 and a gud lens for that.. what would be ur pick.. one lens for video and photoss
def if you have the a6000 or a6300 only, the 10-18 is a must.
Nice! Sounds like you have your lenses set!
His math is bad.... 10-18 = 15-27 on full frame
Hes totally right
LOL, 10 x 1.5 = 15, clown
Great video bud. I'm all set with an 18-35 rn, but will definitely look out for more lens videos from you soon! This was definitely helpful in at least giving me information about lenses I was considering! :) Keep em' coming!
every lens review should be something like this, good work. Subbed
-Joe
Please calculate (crop factor):
16 x 1,5 = 24 mm
35 x 1,5 = 52,5 mm that ist not really wide angle
10 x 1,5 = 15 mm that ist quite wide in case of APS-C sensonr
18 x 1,5 = 27 mm that is quite "normal"
You don't need to add crop factor to a full frame lens. Cheers!
This was super useful, thanks. I'm trying to think of a good vlog setup for a trip I have coming up. I'm thinking 10-18mm on A7rII in crop/super 35 mode. It's light weight enough and image quality for video is solid.

Yass, awesome video Jerry! Question: do you record in a flat picture profile? Also, do you have any plugins for color grading?
Just got the Sony A6300 and will use it with a Canon 50mm/1.4 that I bought years ago for my old 70D. Aside from the 50mm/ 1.4, what other lens do you suggest I add? Is the 10-18mm white box an old version or what? What's the difference between this one and the orange one? Thanks!!!
Great video comparison thanks! Did you notice the a6300 looked brighter, any ideas?
great comparrison man!I have the A7S and the 10-18mm and I think im gonna upgrade to the 16-35mm just because of barrol distortion, it goes crazy at any focal lenght, people should be aware of that also ;)

why didnt you take the 16-70 f4? Whats the different with that 16-35? thank you for responding..
Great video and timing as I'm about to pull the trigger on the FF lens for my A7R II
Wow. This was super comprehensive! Thanks for the variety of tests!
I know it will be heavy ,but will it work well?
I got a Sony a5100 with a F4 10-18mm lens. And when I shoot in manual mode at F4, the video looks extremely flat and looks nothing like yours. Is the image quality because of my a5100?
Great video
Do you recommend using the 16-35mm on a6300 for photography, I actually have the 10-18 for landscape and since 16-35mm is equivalent to 24-52 on aps-c i thought they would make a great combination
Why you did not show 2 pictures to see how is the sharpness between the 2 lenses?
the a6500 has a great video feature called clear image zoom, where you can crop in 2.0x to the sensor and keep full 4k pixel readout (instead of downsample from 6.5 to 4k on super 35mm).

Awesome! I'm planning on buying my a6500 at the end of May, if it's not gone by then I'll buy it!
Why not the A7 II ?
why the highlights so blown out? don't both cameras shoot s-log 3?
Great review! Congrats! I think i'll go for the 16-35 (i also use both Full Frame and APS-C) but i'm curious: how about shooting some portrait at the long end (35mm) on Full Frame? What kind of blur does the 16-35 eventually provides?
good video! but im wondering, how far the distance between ur stand point and the camera?? inside your room and when u're outside. this is will help me to choose the lens.. thanks
Hey Jerry!! By "croping" do you mean using a "clearZoom" feature?
If you remove the rear baffle of the 10-18 as I did :) you will find it much more usable between 12 and 18mm. Only the weird distortion stays.
By usable I mean on full frame camera :). It doesn't affect the flare resistance too as far as I tested... I use it on 7r2 and with some custom made profiles from internet the distortion is correctable. It is also big fun to shoot at 12mm on full frame.

I recommend using the play memory app to remotely control your lens. Great video, it helped a lot.
dude.. nice video man... are you shooting 4k in 30fps or 24fps in this video?
Nice video :) Have you tried the 12mm F/2.8 Touit lens? I have a hard time deciding between this and Sony 10-18mm. 95% stills, landscapes and travelling. For a6300. Thanks for any suggestions! :)
When you know you want the 16-35 but you love how small the 10-18 is,...... lilterally uhhh
Awesome, just tweeted you :)
Thank You. This is exactly what I was looking for so long. Thank you so much for the video.

I use this on my A7R for Photography and i get some crazy shots in the cities. Best lens for that ultra wide angle
I am using the 10-18 and I love it. Check out my latest TH-cam video to see some real life examples.
What about image quality (sharpness etc..) - Which is better?
Thank U for this video, I have to buy the A6500 and I was struggling about the lens choose and now I don’t have no doubt to get the 10-18 mm because on C-sensor the 16-35 is not so wide 👍

Hey, question for you, is that white box the US or the International version of the Sel1018? I just ordered 2 from best buy and got one in a white box and one in an orange box.
Two really nice looking lenses man!! Great video, I'm jealous haha
Any thoughts on the Sony f4 16-70 compared to these?
Would the 16-35mm for my Sony a6000 be a good upgrade from the 19mm sigma lens?
NOBA TECH is there a cheaper alternative for Sony a6000?
The 10-18 is very expensive imo for an aps-C lens.
Sure but f4 on aps-c? i'd had hoped for eighter a lower price, or a wider aperture.
+NOBA TECH im a lil bit confused, so basically i can use non full frame lens on a7 series? and i also can use full frame lens on apsc camera? im using a5100.

can you suggest me zoom lens for Sony A58Y camera ? from india
Very accurate and to the point. Thank you!

+NOBA TECH Yes the new 24-70 is expensive but it is not too heavy and totally awesome!

IMO the 18 to 105 is same as the zeiss in image quality, bigger range and non extending operation. Does not have as much as close distance, but for an overall great lens the 18 105 is better.
What would you recommend for the first lens for the a7sii!?
hi I'm looking at buying the new A6500 because I've heard that the A6300 overheats. Do you find that a problem with your 6300 would you still recommend it - I'm going to use it on a Crane stabalizer.
The firmware update hasn't helped a lot of people. I wonder if it was earlier models and they've secretly fixed it without saying in later models.
great vid, thanks for taking the great amount of time for the two.
hey noba love your videos man, was wondering what lens you used for this video? Was it the 28mm?
thank you for your review. now I really confuse to switch to sony Fullframe but I can't find the great affordable wide-angle lens such as 10-18 on APSC , 12-24 price is extremely high
The best option for price is the Batis 18mm I love that lens. And it’s not as bad in price as the 12-24
What camera & lens do you use for this video? looks awesome ;)
Looks stunning, thanks ;)
Do you use autofocus or is is manually set? :)
Hi I was just watching another youtuber vloger and he said that the 16-35mm is the equivalent of a 10mm on his sony as7ii? i am confused?
Thank for the help!!
Thanks :)
I have a question.
That would be the best TH-cam camera ever if you ask me lol
which is the best cheap non kit lens for video recording on the a 6300
Thank you very much for your interesting video.
You've provided me with all the information I was looking for.
Cheers!
that is when you have an fe camera though. for solely apsc that 1018 is quite important and useful as well
Which do you recommend from the two lens for the a7rii? I’m looking for just wide angle super sharp!
Thank you for this! Super helpful video.
Kindly suggest Cheap Lenses for Sony A58.
thank you so much dude! now i understand what's full frame and apsc, and cropping, and vignetting. if it wasn't for this video i wouldn't have known this and still probably confused. thank you!
Very very usefull video dude, many thx .
I have a question, I wanted to buy 16mm 2.8 with the wide converter for my a6500 so it gives me 10mm but I saw that is very bad sharped lense, so any comperation btw 16mm and 10mm? Especialy about the sharpness factor
I donno of u have any info about the other lens 16mm!
Look on the official sony page for the 10-18 which is an APSC specific lens. It says "35 mm equivalent focal length: 15-27 mm" right on there
for vlog wiht a7iii better 16-35 or 28mm f2 orrrrrr 24 1.4 ? jesus im so confuseeeee
what is the difference on 16-35 mm Vs. 16-70 mm lens? both are Zeiss lens but, besides focal length what would be the difference? the 16-35 mm cost more, but nobody can seem to tell me why.
build quality. Thing is very heavy.
What about picture quality?
Aperture. The 16-70 gives a constant F/4 on APS-C, while the 16-35 gives a constant F/4 on full frame, which translates to F/2.8 when used on APS-C.
I was incorrect in thinking that apertures convert depending on sensor size; the Sony 16-35mm still has an F4 aperture when used on an aps-c camera. It won't make the image brighter because it doesn't direct all that light onto the smaller sensor, otherwise the field of view would also be wider.
What are you using for AF-C? flexible spot or wide? i can see some pulsating light happening near the Gopro and the light on the far right side.
Cool! did you ever pick up the 24-70mm?
great video just what i was looking for, i have a 14mm full frame lens, considering to get a6300
amazing review buddy! really helpful. the 6300 and the 10-18 is a perfect combination. but I'm still saving for the S7ii
7S II? :)
How does the 16-35 perform in low lighting...since you use an as
meant a7s not "as" sorry
Why not compare the 16-70 ? How does that factor with these for the A6300
excellent thanks
Thank you for the video! That is what I was looking for. A comparison between both lenses on both cameras. :)
If the 10-18 is an apsc lens, then why does it still have a crop factor when paried with the 6300, an apsc camera?
That's how it works. Every lens has the mm expressed for fullframe, you always have to apply the crop factor when it's about apsc or m43.
These lenses are almost the same as far as field of view known their respective bodies (16-35 is a little longer like 10-24mm apsc lens.)
which is an alternative to the wide angle as 10-18 for sony e?
Thank you so much for the video,
In your opinion what do you think if we add the famous Sigma 18-35 1.8(MC11) to this comparison ?
Great video man, different light funny and informative, keep going. Just wish sony ad a more wide lense for full frame in a more affordable price. I am thinking in sigma maybe
What camera does the apsc lens does not crop in?
hey what camera and lens are you using to record this with ?
Anybody know if I could use the 10-18 on a7iii in full frame mode? I saw here he said he used 10-18 in full frame on the a7sii
Maybe one day Ill be on that sony train :) great video Jerry!
Love ur videos so crispy..Great job.. all the effort u put on these videos thats outstanding.. respect for that. I am thinking of buying a6300 and a gud lens for that.. what would be ur pick.. one lens for video and photoss
can u post the link??
I have a funny question!
Does a7sii IBIS work with apcs lenses?
if you had to choose between 16-35mm and 28mm for vlog , which lens you choose ?ps GREAT video!
you're a natural in front of the camera! Fantastic, helpful review!
Great video Noba!
