Great review Vance. You and I have both tried a LOT of mods on our boats over the years and you I agree with every thing you said both good and bad about the boat and the mods. It's certainly a work in progress, but it keeps getting better and better. Have a good winter and keep thinking about what needs changed. Eventually, we'll get these boats dialed into perfection.

I'm getting there but still have a little way to go for sure Sam. I have to address the Lowrance transducer setup. Not sure how to extend the arm yet. I like the placement just need a half foot extension. Have a great winter too and thanks for watching and commenting. I already miss fishing so hopefully this Winter goes by quickly. Fish on.

I really enjoyed this review. When I saw it was 36 minutes, I thought, Wow it's a long one. But the video went by so fast. I appreciate how you talked about the mod fails. I've watched every video you've done and when I had my Sun Dolphin 8, I did a lot of the same Mods you showed. I had the rod holders in the 4 corners. I had the Anderson conectors for my trolling motor. I did use the EYE BOLT in the front to help pull the boat in and also to strap it to the trailer. I never built a table because I didn't have it long enough. All in all it was a great video. Anyone who has a PBR10 or wants to get one and is thinking about any kind of mods, I think this video is a must see. Fish on!!!

Great review. I'll be getting this boat in a few months. Planning on running it in the local lakes here in Asheville, NC. I'll also be bringing it out on the river for small mouth, trout and the local Musky population. For a budget boat, this thing checks all the boxes!

I sent my brand new Loomis over the rail on my Pelican on a dirty water lake. Pissed I motored away , found a big treble hook an hour later. Went back, 2nd cast I caught a Loomis! 😁
I'm on my second Pelican. I had the same one you got, just a bit leaky. I ended up splitting it and pulling out the water logged plywood and added liquid foam. Still was a water trap. I sold it, bought the Sun Dolphin version that was badged as field and stream, but it wasn't as stable as the pelican, didnt work so well in weather either. So I sold it last winter.
Then a few days ago, i'm on FB market place looking for a Utility trailer, First thing that pops up, a hardly used Bass Raider 10E with a 55lb Minn Kota for $600. I got it for $500. Stoked!
As far as the battery goes, I put it in the front on my last one and on the F&S, best place for it, balances the weight out, and I use quick connect tabs with a minn kota battery box. Quick and easy

I just got a Field & Stream Angler 8'. Never was interested in buying a boat due to needing a trailer. Now I can strap a boat on top of my SUV and drop it anywhere. 👍
Already got some drain plugs for the pontoons, since the Angler doesnt come with them. I also have a scupper drain on order, as well as a 3d printed shim to keep the boat from flexing when I tighten the drain down.
I already have some yoga mats to spare, so that seems like a no-brainer.

I recently purchased a new Bass Raider, had it registered and then registered a home made trailer for it after finishing the build. So it's almost ready for it's maiden voyage in one of Florida's gator infested lakes. Can't wait to try it soon. Still deciding on which gas powered motor to buy.
People like Vance who take the time to make these videos sharing all of their successes as well as their failures are greatly appreciated. It really could keep others from having expensive and perhaps tragic results if a modification makes the boat unstable. I too thought about the seat risers for my Bass Raider, but now I think I will stay with the lower, more stable stock seats. No sense in me needlessly feeding myself to the alligators just as I'm getting ready to start enjoying retirement. One question I do have. What is the best shaft length for a gas motor on this boat? The transom just seems a bit to high to work well with a short shaft engine, and there isn't much discussion about gas engine shaft lengths used on the Bass Raider. Will this pontoon boat require a longer shaft motor? 20 or more inches? Thanks for the video.

    • @fishingwithvance
      @fishingwithvance  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks very much for the kind words. I have the short shaft Honda and it works great. Those risers were bad news for us that's sure. Best of luck with your boat.

Thanks for watching Ira and I hope it helped. I have really enjoyed mine and have minor complaints after 8 years. I don't think you can go wrong with one of these depending on bodies of water you plan to fish. For smaller lakes and tough to get places, it is hard to beat. @@fishingwithvance Yea, I moved here to Florida last year and have been catching some decent bass, tilapia, catfish and even caught a nice 22" Bowfin. I fish from the banks and docks but it's time for me to get out on the lake to catch some big award winning bass so that's why I am shopping around for a small boat. I will need a trailer hitch on my car and a small trailer to take the boat to the lakes and backup into the lakes here!! I used to have a nice 10' aluminum boat years ago with a small motor and trolling motor but unfortunately I sold it. I love fishing! I was away from it for a long time but since moving to Florida I got back into it. Fishing all year here 365 days a year!! The fish here can be finicky though and they are smart!! As usual, great video! Have you or any of the other FWV crew ever have any issue with water getting in at the seam and saturating the foam? I see this mentioned a good bit in a FB group. Not just PBR, but pond prowlers and sun dolphins (which I own) too. I've only had mine 6 months, so I haven't noticed it. Seeing that you've had yours for 8 years and use it a lot every year, I was curious.

    • @fishingwithvance

Thanks very much Rob. None of us have had that issue I must say. Catter and Highlife have not used their 10E and 8E as much as the OG 10 of mine but no issues on the seam on any. I have thought about putting some flex seal around mine but haven't had to do it so far. I really have used the heck out of that 10 though that is a fact. I think I had to drain the pontoons maybe once. I imagine it has a lot to do with how much weight is on the boat. We all tend to exceed the weight with the mods but that's part of the fun lol. Thanks for watching my video on the PBR. I would recommend my playlist on the PBR if you haven't watched any of those videos on everything I have tried on the Pelican Bass Raider. You can always go to Fishingwithvance.com and click on the Pelican Mods tab. Having said that, I wish I had a better answer for you but I have not yet put the PBR on any Rivers. It is on my list to try and just bought a Honda 2.3 motor for it last season. Unfortunately, our rivers had gotten so low, I couldn't try it. I wish I had the experience to share and hopefully I am able to try that this season. Based on how fast my PBR went in the Lake with the Honda 2.3 last season, I would think it would handle the river. I love this little boat that is for sure. I think you will as well. Best of luck with it and let me know how it works out. Thanks for watching. I will be posting my river trips this season so please stay tuned. Fish on!

Can you mount the trolling motor at the stern and fish like it is the front of the boat. The stern mount is much beefier than the bow mount and I wondered if you could fish out of the back like it’s the front. Would the aerodynamics of the pontoons allow it.
Also, when I mount my Minn Kota (30 pound - hand operated) to the bow, it has a tendency to try and twist off - side to side. Part of the problem has to do with the metal mounting plates. When you tighten down, it is metal to metal or hard plastic to metal. In other words, it has a tendency to slide under torque. Thanks in advance.

I fish out of the back 95% of the time. I find when fishing out of the front, the boat sways all over the place. I haven't put a rudder on it as some do. The boat moves very little fishing out the back. When moving from point A to B, I drive forward otherwise, water tends to spill over the back of the boat. However, when traversing along the bank to cast at spots for Bass, I fish out the back and use reverse in the TM. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions or my answer isn't clear. Fella pondered it a minute, cocked his head, and said: "Why that's like catchin' you a woman, and then you just . . . " We all chuckled.

I respect that I really do. Now, if I kept all the bass I have caught out of my small lakes I fish, it would be ruined inside of 2 years. Some guy taking his kid there when I'm gone won't have a bass to catch. Keeping crappie, Catfish, bluegill etc... fine but not bass. Again, if I'm that hungry for fish, I'll head to Walmart and buy it. I respect others opinions and approaches. It's just not remotely my thing. Fish on and thanks for watching and for comment. I hope you keep watching.

Vance: I bought a new Bass Raider. My question concerns the bow-mounted rod holders. I bought 1&1/4 inch PVC but it doesn’t quite fit in the new straps which are quite stiff. Was wondering what size PVC you used or how you were able to get the PVC to fit? Thanks in advance. Really enjoy your videos.

Thanks Steve B for the kind words. I appreciate you watching. I just double checked and I have 1 & 1/2 inch PVC in mine. It is a tight fit no question but it stays in there pretty well. Congrats on getting your new PBR. Maybe the newer Raiders are changed for the front pole holders. Not sure. Have a great season with your new boat. Let me know if you have any other questions. Sorry I wasn't more help on this one. Fish on!

Vance: My bad. You are right. 1&1/2 inch PVC. Thanks again. Keep those videos coming. I really enjoy them.

Vance: I forgot to ask but I don’t yet see where you have (or have not) added a scupper plug. Can you weigh in on this modification. My new 10E sits outside on a boat lift recently constructed for the boat. I mainly fish canals on our lake. While the 10E will be covered, there is no roof overhead. Just wondering what you think about scuppers.

@@steveb.1701 Well Steve, I watched a few videos on it and actually bought everything I need to put one in but I just couldn't pull the trigger on drilling a hole in the boat. Water in the bottom of the boat hasn't been a big issue for me so have held off. I store the boat in my garage so rain other than when fishing isn't an issue. However, I honestly haven't hear of anyone having issues with their scupper plug they put in. I have to put on in at some point if I use my Honda more and go on bigger lakes as planned. I think Bass Brothers video on how to do it is one of the best ones out there including what all you need. Hope this helps. Fish on! th-cam.com/video/hcVTccxg9H4/w-d-xo.html

I, too, watched the Bass Brothers video and ordered all the scupper stuff. Then, I ran across a video posted by Jeff the Executioner where his PBR almost turned into a submarine. The scupper plug broke while out fishing and the PBR pontoons began to fill with water. I asked what he did about it and he replaced the Atwood-type scupper with a stainless steel version. Nothing is easy!!!

Be careful with the lithium ion batteries. If a freak accident happened and fire. There no stopping it. U will lose everything. And be swimming

Haven't heard of any issues with these in that way. I sure wouldn't want to be fishing when it burst into flames.

I have my pelican 8’ for 9 years and like till this day. If I ever got a replacement it will be a pelican. I have no interest in any other brand.
