His bass work on Bowie's album The Man Who Sold the World is just stellar. A rather massive presence on pretty much every song. He's made so many meaningful contributions over the decades.
WOOOOHOOOOO - I'm HERE for some MORE T. REX!!! THANKS, ALL!! HUGS!! ...and, TONY'S RIGHT - YA'LL DID look ADORABLE!!! :) STILL DO! Tony lookin' SHARP, TOO!
Thank You Tony Visconti! You played an important role in my early teenage years. Ride The White Swan, Hot Love, Get It On, and especially the Jeepster were some of the first songs that I got interested in during that strange period when a boy transforms from a childhood to something called a teenager. My first girl friend, who was a rather straight-soken person, told me that my biggest fault was that I did not look at all like Brian Connolly (lead singer of Sweet), but, on the other hand, if I would get my long hair curled, I would look a bit like Marc Bolan. For couple of weeks I vacillated between the two options: should I do it, or not. I hated the idea, because I thought it would make me look less manly, but then again, if I did it, would she... Eventually, the problem was solved. She found somebody who looked exactly like Brian Connolly.
Thank you, Mr. Visconti for bringing us the behind-the-scenes stories. Good stuff! 'Bang a Gong' is a song that just makes me happy. I will never tire of listening to it. As a side note, the last line where Marc Bolan says, 'Meanwhile, I'm still thinking,' was a line used by Chuck Berry in his song 'Little Queenie.' That's a golden oldie you really ought to check out!
Mr. Visconti played the bass on the David Bowie album "The Man Who Sold the World"...Outstanding classic late 60's/early 70's power trio style bass. On par with guys like Jack Bruce or Geezer Butler...
Many people outside the UK don't understand how important Bolan was to the music industry, the man was an absolute legend and a genius. There's been nobody like Bolan since and there never will be.The change from his acoustic Tyrannosaurus Rex stuff to songs like elemental child is mind blowing.
Probably commented this on the original video. But my god Marc Bolan was a beautiful man. Him and David Essex and their wonderful hair was why my mum fell for my dad and is long dark curly locks lol
Great show as always guys. I was lucky enough to play Marc’s Gibson Flying V guitar as shown in the video. A close friend of mine ran the T-Rex fan club for several years, and owned that guitar along with many items of memorabilia and stage outfits.
I saw T.Rex at the Fillmore East in New York City in 1971 - and they opened for Mountain!!!!! I'm still coming down from this amazing show, which was my second rock concert ever. (First was Sly and the Family Stone in Madison Square Garden) Man, those were the days!!!!!
OMG! Thank yo for bringing back such wonderful & great memories for me. My hub & I wo8uld be driving to Phoenix for concerts or drag races & he would play "Bang A Gong" full blast as we bopped on our seats driving down the freeway, singing at the top of our lungs. ROTFLMBO!! WE LOVED OUR MUSIC!! I can still see him using the steering wheel as an "air guitar" and then switch to "air drums". My husband passed over 10 yrs ago. I still miss him, so it is wonderful to have the fun memories. Thank you so much!!!
What a blast from the past y’all were so cute back then and now you’re even cuter ❣️ all around groovy song ,Thank you Tony for bringing it back around.Love your guitar.
ROB SQUAD, TONY VISCONTI HAS BEEN AN AMAZING GUEST AND I WANT TO GIVE MY APPRECIATION TO YOU GUYS, J AND AMBER, FOR HAVING THIS CHANNEL AND ALLOWING US TO LIVE VICARIOUSLY THROUGH YOU GUYS AND HEAR WHAT THESE GREAT PEOPLE IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS HAVE TO SAY!!! AGAIN THIS WAS SUCH A FANTASTIC IDEA THAT YOU GUYS HAVE COME UP WITH HERE AND I AM A FAN FOR LIFE!!!! I LOOK FORWARD TO THESE REACTIONS AND INTERVIEWS WITH THESE EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I idolized T rex when i was younger. I went to his memorial at the crash site and his home a couple of years ago, and have to admit i burst into tears when i saw it.
The only song on the "Electric Warrior" album I can live without is "Girl". The rest are great tunes. My top three in order are "Jeepster", "Motivator", and of course this one.
Tony Visconti has such range as a producer; from Bowie and T.Rex to Gentle Giant and the iconic acoustic singer-songwriter Ralph McTell Everything he does sounds so organic, warm and in the moment.
T Rex was my introduction to Music when I was a Child in London England in The Early 70's , saw this charismatic character on TV playing wild songs, huge T Rex fan , my favourites are "Electric Slim & The Factory Hen" about a guy who's girl turns to a call girl , fantastic song and lyrics, also "Left Hand Luke" about an outlaw, also "Highway Knees" beautiful and all his hit singles are so catchy Love Marc Bolan ❤️
Tony Visconti produced some of the early albums by the wonderful Ralph McTell! So different from T Rex and David Bowie, but great, creative productions.
I was 18 at the time,[1971].[I'm 70 now, About 12 of us ,all virile young men were on our usual bender weekend after working all week int steelworks and pits. After drinking in Rotherham town centre most of the day we decided to ''Get it on'',down to Clifton Park to see this guy,''Bolan & T-Rex''..It was a memorable weekend, for those of us who could remember after all the beer. Also on stage at the gig was Arthur Brown, crazy man, check out his hit single,''FIRE''...Well we can say..''We were there''..still enjoy Bang a Gong
So, true story here. in 1973 I was in the 8th grade, in Denver. A local radio station had a call-in line to make requests. I called it to request this song. But... I dialed the wrong number. When a lady answered (she sounded elderly), I just said "Bang a Gong, Get it On" and all I heard was a scream "Whaaat?!" and I hung up, thoroughly embarrassed. I can only imagine what she must have thought.
Tony Visconti is a popular music legend. I passed up the opportunity to talk to him when he was attending a gig by his long term girlfriend, Kristeen Young, who was performing at a north London pub venue (my friends' band was supporting her, but I would have been there anyway). I just couldn't think of what to say to him other than 'thank you', so I left it to my friends to bask in his aura. Kristeen is great as well, by the way. Check out her tracks You Always Win, The Devil Made Me, Kill The Father and Catland.
You finally got to the Band T Rex. The album Electric Warrior is probably one of the greatest albums of all time. Singer The late Marc Bolan was way ahead of his time, and also they were one of the first or the first glam rock bands
Elton and Marc would go on to become good friends. In fact, Elton performed “Bang A Gong (Get It On)” alongside T-Rex during the aforementioned 1971 Top of the Pops appearance.Sep 12, 2020
Tony Blackburn DJ at start From Top Of The Pops music show, Top 40. BBC Radio1. Is still DJ for BBC Radio 2 on a Saturday and Sundays Legendary DJ his main music is classic Soul from past decades.
Back then everything was recorded and the artists just mimed on ToTP. So Elton actually just mimed the Piano parts of "Get It On" (the UK/original title) for Top of the Pops. T Rex's original recording included Blue Weaver (Welsh guy) and Rick Wakeman on the Piano (playing different parts of the tune), with the Saxophone player from King Crimson. Marc was the only permanent member of T Rex, with others changing regularly. - Not sure how true it is, but it is reported that this song was so disliked by John Peel (very famous and VERY influential radio DJ) that it caused a rift between Marc & John who had been friends
Tony Visconti, stellar ! Love this channel and kudos to y’all from all the great work you do and also the great that you have some amazing people on your channel. love ,light and blessings yall! 😊
Hey, Amber & Jay, tell Tony that I grew up in Canarsie, Brooklyn, and we had Canarsie HS, and South Shore HS. The first five years of my life I grew up in East New York, around the corner from Thomas Jefferson HS. I currently live in Flatbush, not far from Bensonhurst.
The first time I heard Bang A Gong (Get It On), it was Power Station's version. It wasn't until much later that I actually heard T. Rex's version, which I like well enough (it feels way more laid back), but I'm more used to the heavyness of Power Station's version.
Fantastic addition to your repertoire adding an interview segment. This is a natural progression and evolution of your channels. Fantastic, well done! All the way from New Zealand.
OMG Tony Visconti!!! People don't understand just how important a producer is to a recording. Tony is a legend and a genius.
Tony was Legendary in The 70's A Real Innovator
@@MichaelLynch1 - He also had his footprint on other great recordings after the 70s, such as the Moody Blues album, "The Other Side Of Life".
@@shyman99 his behind the scenes commentary on Blackstar is very insightful
Especially when the song is Plastic Bertrand's Ça plane pour moi 😂

Elton John on piano with T-Rex. Pure Gold.
Tony Visconti!!! Wow!!
Bowie , Bolan Forever!!
.... and Elton John sitting over there on the keyboards and just playing his part like just a member of the band... :)
He was a big T-Rex fan & friend of Marc Bolan.
Tony Visconti - music Royalty. Jackpot!
I love watching the audience dance to these old 70s tunes!
sexy ladys in them 70s

T-REX BABY!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!
And in the video Elton John is on keyboards but he was miming he didn't play on the original recording.Im not sure who did maybe Rick Wakeman?
I first heard this song when I was in Jr. High and I fell in love with the song. It was so popular in the 70's.

Mr. Visconti played the bass on the David Bowie album "The Man Who Sold the World"...Outstanding classic late 60's/early 70's power trio style bass. On par with guys like Jack Bruce or Geezer Butler...
Bit of trivia - on the fade out he sings "meanwhile I'm still thinking". That was taken from the Chuck Berry song, "Little Queenie"
Nailed it! I commented on that too. I hadn't read your comment yet. Great catch! I was hoping that someone caught that!
Love, love, love this song.
What a review!!! Love Elton being in there (never seen this before) and I like the Chuck Berry tribute line, "I was still thinking!" Awesome!
WOW!!! Visconti is a producer LEGEND!! y’all should read his autobiography - absolute gold, what a scoop! well done guys!

Marc Bolan and Leslie West on the same show… I would have died. What an experience that must have been! 🔥👏🏼
Wow! When I clicked I thought you would be reacting to a Tony Visconti interview, but no - you have the man himself!

This was a great idea hope it keeps happening when time allows. Such great discussions
Before there was T Rex, there was Tyrannosaurus Rex with Marc Bolan which rarely had any play time.
That's right they played a different type of music in the old days and the switch to a more commercial sound didn't sit well with the whole band.
What a blast from the past y’all were so cute back then and now you’re even cuter ❣️ all around groovy song ,Thank you Tony for bringing it back around.Love your guitar.

The end line "meanwhile im still thinking " is a line from "little queenie"
Glamorock at its best
the song is actually called Get It On (its was the americans who re-named it Bang A Gong, for silly people who would mistake it for Chase's Get It On)
Marc Bolan had a tv show that can be found on youtube. He had many notable guests
As mentioned multiple times, Tony has such a lineage in music production - he is a genuine living legend in music.
Marc was ethereal, magnificent and pure magic.
I love 'Jeepster', '20th Century Boy', 'Slider'.
I love(d) the Chuck Berry quote on the way out.

I believe it was called bang a gong "get it on " in the US to avoid confusion with another song of the same name by a band name Chase.
