Marc Bolan a legend here in UK, Trex had lots of huge hits. Lead singer Marc died in a car crash age 29 in 1977. Always a legend

It was called "Get It On" in the UK but there was an American record out at the same time. I think Marc's wife Gloria Jones is one of the backing singers. She wrote the classic "Tainted Love" that Marc Almond of Soft Cell covered as a tribute. Marc was Bowie's idol back in the London Mod scene. He had a crazy hippy period as Tyrannosaurus Rex then re-invented as a wild glamrock band T Rex. He was great. To add an earlier band Johns Children were kicked off a The Who tour for being too wild on stage.

The vibe from the late 60s to the mid 70s was purely magical. Just from 73 & 74 you had music like this, and Brother Louie, Black Betty. If you notice the background singers belting out and adding so much, there was "Take a Walk on The Wild Side and the now controversial "And the coloured girls go.. shoop de shoop" and people were happy. Cars with actual engines and styling, amazing movies unrestrained by censorship, and genuine love between people and even races. We were free, and happy, and could love who we wanted. Then came the oil crisis, and then disco, and disco begat the 80s and the censorial "moral majority" and then the worship of unrestrained capitalistic greed (for the few). Then literally everyone forgot how to make god songs, and good movies were banned, and then "devices" became the new pagan God. How far we have fallen, but we still have the cherished old pile of albums and 45s (please explain to Lulu lol) to remind us that once, here in this little blue planet paradise, we could love and we could listen, and we could dance together.

The Best line up 71 to 73 didn't they rock the joint? That was the famous Gloria Jones who become the mother of Marc's child Rolan, the other one is Marsha Hunt another 60s Legend. Mickey Finn was on bongos, that was the best T.Rex line up during those years. Steve Currie was the bass man and Bill Legend on Drums. That T.Shirt Mickey is wearing I am wearing that right now as I type this. My daughter is a printer and she made me a copy of that. Aye we kinda freaked out in our glam rock gear back then it was a lot of fun too. The extra guitarist who joined in 73 was Jack Green he was only in the band for a short while.

Rex were a British rock band. They were formed in London in 1967 as Tyrannosaurus Rex and changed their name to T. Rex in 1970.T. Rex vastly influenced several genres over several decades including glam rock ...The drums are the conga drums. The bongos consist of two small conical drums that are attached to one another by a wooden block or metal bridge. I think the lady with the Afro was Gloria Jones-the original singer of Tainted Love. She was driving the car in 1977 when she ploughed into a tree killing Bolan, just before he would have turned 30. They had a young son together. T Rex were second only to Slade as the biggest band here in the UK in the 1970's-though this was their only US top ten hit.

T- Rex had many hits in the 70s in the UK...in fact the very first single I bought was T-Rex, Teenage Dream!
Marc Bolan was an incredible talent and another "what if" musician. He was killed in a car crash at the age of 29...the Mini 1275GT driven by his partner Gloria Jones, veered off the road on Barnes Common, hitting a fence then a tree. Both had been drinking. Marc was killed instantly and Gloria was badly hurt. Marc had never learned to drive having had a premonition he would die in a car crash!

Two things proven: you three are the best AND that old music was the best ever - before or since. I love the gent (dad?) going in and out. That generation, as mum knows, was the best. The clothes, the hair, the confidence. You know why? We were raised in the fifties and early sixties. No helicoptering. We walked to school. We stayed out all day in the summer, coming home only for lunch and dinner. So we were confident and walked around like we owned the place. Couldn’t wait to get out of the home and get a car. Today’s youth could take a page or two out of our book. Right mum? You three rock!

There’s another video version of this song I’ve often seen, from England’s “Top of the Pops” show, that features Elton John on piano. I say “features”-not sure how much, if any, piano sound he really contributes to the performance. I guess he simply was also a guest on that particular episode and sat in. Also, pretty sure that episode is just a lip-sync to the studio version of the song, not the live one you reviewed here. For what it’s worth. Also, as others have noted, the Robert Palmer/Duran Duran (two members)/Chic (drummer Tony Thompson) group called The Power Station covered this song in the mid-1980s-it’s worth a listen.
I continue to enjoy your videos. Thanks for the content. 🙂

The Bang a Gong bit was added to the title in the US, in the UK was just Get it on . Was evidently another song with the title Get it on in the US released before this ..
T Rex or Tyrannosaurus Rex as they were originally known were one biggest pop bands of the early 1970's . Had many hits in the UK not sure about the states .
Ride a white swan Hot Love Jeepster Telegram Sam Metal Guru amongst others !!!

Robert Palmer and Power station did a killer cover of this song in the eighties.

Despite the trappings Bolan was an old fashioned rock n roller brought up to date

I’m not a massive T.Rex fan but Get it on is a great song but I also have in my playlist 20th Century Boy and Children of the Revolution. If you get the chance to check them out I don’t think you will be disappointed

A friend of mine went to the very first Glastonbury - Glastonbury Fayre - in 1970 and T Rex were on the bill. They were huge in the early 1970's and yes...judging from your reaction - Marc was hot back in the day!...still is:). You should check out Metal Guru, Ride a White Swan, fantastic stuff. Sadly, Marc died in a car crash in 1977.

You nedd to check out 20th Century Boy from this band. And also check out The Powerstation covering Bang A Gong. It was a huge hit in the mid 80s.

Marc Bolan created and defined the glam rock genre and set the style for most rock bands of the 70s

We loved Marc Bolan and T-Rex. Sadly Bolan died in a car crash. We named our first son Marc after him. Before T-Rex they were called Tyrannosaurus Rex which was more "psychedelic folk". I saw them both live.

They added 'Bang a Gong' to the title because there was already a song called 'Get It On'.

The US didn't really have a glam rock revolution. In the UK Bowie, Marc Bolan, Roxy Music - even Slade and The Sweet - influenced sound, fashion and an edgy lifestyle. Americans like Iggy Pop and Lou Reed were welcomed into the circle.

Yeah they did. But it happened in the 80s with bands like Poison, Cinderella and the like.

They would gone all the way but sorry to say - the lead singer & guitarist, Mark Bolan, was killed early on. Motorcycle crash, I think. The platform shoes 👞 were glam too. Fun band. Fun times! Thank you for sharing this!
