He had never gotten around to divorcing June Child and so Gloria Jones basically got nothing when he died, it was all in trusts that had been set up previously. Gloria Jones and Rolan Bolan were living in poverty for several years until Gloria was able to get back on her feet again financially. Later, Rolan got a degree in Fine Arts (quietly paid for by Bowie), modeled for a while for Tommy Hilfiger, and started a music career of his own. Even later still, he got a substantial amount of money from a separate discretionary trust when June Child passed away. Rolan Bolan is now 45 years old. However, and this is simply amazing, considering how long ago Marc Bolan died, the bulk of his money is still in that discretionary trust, because of the way the trust is worded, and that's estimated to be somewhere between $38 million USD and $60 million USD. His only son cannot avail himself of that money. Gloria Jones is still alive and is now 75 years old.

Marc is indeed the Grandfather of Glam rock, and later in his career he started introducing mascara and eye makeup along with a nice set of pearls. He mentored David Bowie, Ian Hunter and quite a few others
I remember my older sister waking me one night after returning from a T. Rex gig in London. She was in tears telling me how Bolan had sat on the edge of the stage and sung while looking into her eyes. Being a 12 year Slade fanatic, I told her to f*** right off. Now, nearly 50 years later, I have adored T. Rex for years and can't imagine how I didn't get it. Still haven't told my sister that I like them.

I saw Marc Bolan open for Three Dog Night in in the early 70's. I was 14. What a vision to behold with the crushed velvet purple suit, purple glitter eye shadow and glitter in his hair. He definitely won the crowd over. I'm so glad I got to see him live.

The internet and youtube's algorithms will make sure it doesn't die. Examples - my daughter's high school choir did a Beatles medley for end of year in 2012. Black Sabbath / Pink Floyd etc. still have a huge following today, Mainstream music today is too timid to try new sounds or styles, so the kids look elsewhere for fresh stuff.

I played this song over and over again when it first came out in 1971. The song was off their successful ELECTRIC WARRIOR album. Lead singer Marc Bolan and T-Rex were a huge hit in England and this song featured Marc's friend Elton John on the piano. We lost Marc in a car accident on September 16 1977 weeks short of his 30th birthday RIP Marc going way too soon. 2 songs also woth a listen are HOT LOVE 💘 and PLANET QUEEN.

In 1971, when I was at school there two albums you had to get:- T-Rex - Electric Warrior Led Zeppelin - The Third Album For a short time, Marc was unbeatable. At the 1972 Xmas School Disco,. people lost their minds to "Solid Gold Easy Action." Many of my old school friends are sadly no longer here, but I can see them all dancing to Marc's irresistible beat nearly five decades ago.

This song was only known as" Bang a gong" in America as there was another song called "Get it on" released at the time and was thought it would be confusing. The rest of the world knows it as "Get it on".
That was by Chase on his first album. Chase. There you will really find the horn section. Bill Chase was what was referred to a a screech trumpet player, hitting really high notes. Livin' in Heat is off that album too
Mind boggling to think that T-Rex didn't hit it off big in the US at the time. In the UK he's still considered an icon of glam rock alongside David Bowie.
Interesting aside, Rick Wakeman did keyboards for the song and was paid almost nothing for the gig (9 pounds). Wakeman later played keyboards for the band Yes, and went on to a successful solo career. You should check out his album Journey to the Center of the Earth." The interesting bit is that when T-Rex did the song for Top of the Pops in 1971, they got Elton John to "play" the piano.
I saw Rick Wakeman in concert doing Journey To The Centre of the Earth in Sydney when I was a teenager in the 70’s. It was an unbelievable stage production! All those keyboards...and he played two at once it was mesmerising.

How I love watching you both and your open-minded reactions. The tree where Marc Bolan lost his life in a car accident back in 1977 is in Barnes, south west London. This spot has become a memorial to the hugely talented yet diminutive Marc. His partner, Gloria Jones, who was driving the car in which he died and son, Rolan, visited the spot and there is a TH-cam record of the event.
This blew up radio on its release in 1971. Dirty, Gritty but not overly nasty. The hook and the beat is infectious. They hit a Homerun with this tasty treat.

@Turtlenest1 Those are Congas. I have a pair sitting in my living room. Both Congas and Bongos are "single" headed. However, Bongos come as a "pair" of drums that are "permanently" attached to each other via a wood "bridge" and are much smaller - often held in the lap and/or between the knees. Congas can come single but are usually in pairs and even triplets, but they are not "attached" to each other. Pairs can be hooked on a single stand that holds them side by side, although the stand he is using in this video is different from mine. I also have Djembe, Ashiko and Doumbek drums as well as some other percussion instruments. A Djun Djun would be an example of a double headed drum - I don't have one of those. Congas are barrel shaped, Bongos and Ashikos are funnel shaped, Djembe and Doumbek are more or less (for lack of a better term) hour glass shaped - with one end being larger than the other, and a Djun Djun is cylinder shaped and is the only one out of those drums that is double headed. ✌👍🙂
I grew up in the 70's listening to him, as my sister's were much older than me, it was Marc Bolan for my eldest sister & David Bowie for my other one, can remember her painting his portrait for her art exam, she was devastated when he was killed in a car crash, so there was some great music played in our house thanks to my big sisters.

Ahh, good old Marc. I remember his first appearance on British TV in the early '70's I think. My mum said "Oh dear, I don't think that boy is quite right is he?" I like to think of him up there with the wings of a white swan, polishing his hubcap, diamond star halo.
Marc Bolan was a huge crush of my mums, when I was a toddler he was all you could hear playing... my mum adored him! As an aside, Marc Bolan's (the lead singer) girlfriend at the time was American singer Gloria Jones, who recorded the original version of "Tainted Love" (which was a monster worldwide hit by Soft Cell in 1981) in 1965.
The supergroup Power Station covered this in the 80's and their version was really good too, thanks to the vocals of Robert Palmer. Definitely worth checking out.
The song is called Get it On. It is on side two of T Rex's Electric Warrior album which I bought in 1971 and still have. Don't know why people insist on calling it Bang a Gong. Not only was Marc Bolan (real name Marc Feld) a prolific song writer he was also a very gifted poet.

Interesting aside, Rick Wakeman did keyboards for the song and was paid almost nothing for the gig (9 pounds). Wakeman later played keyboards for the band Yes, and went on to a successful solo career. You should check out his album Journey to the Center of the Earth." The interesting bit is that when T-Rex did the song for Top of the Pops in 1971, they got Elton John to "play" the piano.
I saw Rick Wakeman in concert doing Journey To The Centre of the Earth in Sydney when I was a teenager in the 70’s. It was an unbelievable stage production!

Here you go with “Glam Rock” at the beginning. Marc Bolan was great mates with Elton John & David Bowie. Marc was a Folk singer going nowhere until Elton suggested a more upbeat tune & T Rex was born along with Glam Rock. The girls went crazy over here in England for Marc.

You are correct. He was indeed a folk singer in the beginning. In 1964, Marc Bolan was seventeen years old, an aspiring folk singer, and was wearing jeans and a corduroy cap and doing covers of Bob Dylan songs under the stage name of Toby Tyler at small pubs. Kind of funny, huh?

How I love watching you both and your open-minded reactions. The tree where Marc Bolan lost his life in a car accident back in 1977 is in Barnes, south west London. This spot has become a memorial to the hugely talented yet diminutive Marc. His partner, Gloria Jones, who was driving the car in which he died and son, Rolan, visited the spot and there is a TH-cam record of the event.

@Turtlenest1 Those are Congas. I have a pair sitting in my living room. Both Congas and Bongos are "single" headed. However, Bongos come as a "pair" of drums that are "permanently" attached to each other via a wood "bridge" and are much smaller - often held in the lap and/or between the knees. Congas can come single but are usually in pairs and even triplets, but they are not "attached" to each other. Pairs can be hooked on a single stand that holds them side by side, although the stand he is using in this video is different from mine. I also have Djembe, Ashiko and Doumbek drums as well as some other percussion instruments. A Djun Djun would be an example of a double headed drum - I don't have one of those. Congas are barrel shaped, Bongos and Ashikos are funnel shaped, Djembe and Doumbek are more or less (for lack of a better term) hour glass shaped - with one end being larger than the other, and a Djun Djun is cylinder shaped and is the only one out of those drums that is double headed. ✌👍🙂
I grew up in the 70's listening to him, as my sister's were much older than me, it was Marc Bolan for my eldest sister & David Bowie for my other one, can remember her painting his portrait for her art exam, she was devastated when he was killed in a car crash, so there was some great music played in our house thanks to my big sisters.

Power Station, Robert Palmer’s group, did a fantastic cover of this in the 80s and it became one of their best! Definitely worthy of a reaction!
Marc Bolan (singer/songwriter/guitarist) was way ahead of his time. He initiated the "glam rock" era that generated Bowie and others and many ralry punk bands also identified him as an original and an inspiration. Following the Beatles "T-Rextasy" was the biggest thing in England for a 2 - 3 year period. The albums Electric Warrior and The Slider represented the summit of his career. For the most part songs on the mainstream radio were largely nicey nice let's hold hands, happy love songs (yes there were harder acts out there) So when this came out with swag and an element of raunch and attitude, with lyrics "your dirty sweet and your my girl", they jumped into a class of their own and iconic status. Today might be seen as passe but then it hit hard. This song was an important lesson your rock music history journey. That is why people suggested it. Keep on rockin

Ahh, good old Marc. I remember his first appearance on British TV in the early '70's I think. My mum said "Oh dear, I don't think that boy is quite right is he?" I like to think of him up there with the wings of a white swan, polishing his hubcap, diamond star halo.

Marc Bolan was a huge crush of my mums, when I was a toddler he was all you could hear playing... my mum adored him! I can remember her dying when he died in the Car Crash... he is still a beloved fav of my family... my daughters enjoy dancing to his music today :) another fantastic pick and reaction you guys are legends :) 😀😃

As an aside, Marc Bolan's (the lead singer) girlfriend at the time was American singer Gloria Jones, who recorded the original version of "Tainted Love" (which was a monster worldwide hit by Soft Cell in 1981) in 1965.
The supergroup Power Station covered this in the 80's and their version was really good too, thanks to the vocals of Robert Palmer. Definitely worth checking out.
On Power Station's version, Tony Thompson pounded on those drums like they owed him money...

The song is called Get it On. It is on side two of T Rex's Electric Warrior album which I bought in 1971 and still have. Don't know why people insist on calling it Bang a Gong.
Not only was Marc Bolan (real name Marc Feld) a prolific song writer he was also a very gifted poet.
It is Bang A Gong in the US as there was a song called Get It On already released. Record co thought it would be less confusing.

Now that you’ve heard it, you might be interested in the remake from ‘85 I think by The Powerstation (Robert Palmer, Andy Taylor (the guitarist from Duran Duran), John Taylor from Duran Duran, and Tony Thompson). It is louder and edgier. Whether that’s good or bad, it was a worthy remake.

First famous glam rocker! David Bowie was heavily influenced by Marc Bolan! Not a music video, but a tv performance! If you watched the movie Baby Driver, his song in there is Debora that he sings when he meets the waitress!
