I'm in shock, like you brother! I know the song very well. It still gets a lot of radio play to this day. This performance was absolutely wild and far from the studio, BUT, I F*ing loved it!!! And so did that crowd. That singer. Marc Bolan, was amazing. I sadly read in the comments below that he passed very young. Tragic. I'm still stunned. Not only did he play the guitar with a tambourine, my man started whipping it with a belt or something. He brought out the Jimi Hendrix feathers for a few moments, looking to me like he was paying homage to his hero as he was on his knees playing like Jimi used to. My only complaint was that the singers were too loud compared to everyone else. But that's the engineer's fault, they were fire!!! I'm going to watch the original right now. Oh my goodness, that was madness. I got Hendrix and Jim Morrison vibes from him. It's like both of their spirits went into this man when they passed a few years before this.😳😳

@@setonhillstudios Man, I just went and watched the original. (Thanks for posting the link!) That was a whip he brought out. Wild! I also noticed he changed guitars before he started beating it up. Ned from Spain here for the mighty T REX !!! My buddy saw their 1 st tour in like 1972 ? He said the lead guy Marc Bolan came out blasting on his Les Paul and banging it with tambourines. He was wearing a t shirt with HIMSELF on it , covered in glitter and whatever else and just blew everyone away. He started as a street performer, got into the UK psych scene w / John's Children and then started Tyranosaurus Rex which was more hippy dippy acoustic and fairy dust. Then he got heavy and turned it into a crunchy riff machine but still had some spacey stuff too. His fans included The Beatles, The Stones, Bowie, The Turtles ( Flo and Eddie ) and a bazillion freaked out teenagers. White Stripes swiped a whole lotta T Rex to make their songs and vibe. Do the people on hear saying that this performance sucked and saying the studio version is better only listen to the radio ? Haven't they ever been to a concert ?😂😂 This is what a live performance should be like, absolute 🔥🔥🔥🔥
No disrespect but he was riffing back and forth with them at the end. I’m guessing he rehearsed with them, knew them etc. One of them was very enthusiastic I admit, but he must have had a say and heard them sing before. It’s not a bad reflection on him, I mean he beat his guitar up with a belt 😂 It was fun!
You reacted to Sweet recently. Marc Bolan is the godfather of glam rock ….he basically invented it. The make up, the OTT clothes, it became compulsory if you wanted to get anywhere in the popular British music scene. My first true hero. I’ve visited his memorial at Golders Green Crematorium in London, where The Who’s Keith Moon is also commemorated. RIP Marc.
Power Station did a good cover of this in 1985. Robert Palmer was singer and Andy Taylor on lead guitar. Check it out. Their version is titled "Get It On"
This is cocaine fuel at its finest! While not a perfect performance of this classic at all, this is amped up live rock to 100! Everyone on this stage is skyrocketing and pushing at 100 miles per hour! In sure they had the time of their lives, and in their own mind thought they should have won a Grammy! God bless Marc Bolan and T Rex!
Marc Bolan was 20 years ahead of his time unfortunately he died on his 29 birthday in a car accident Marc's girlfriend Gloria Jones was driving but she was injured in the accident. Gloria Jones was a keyboardist and vocalist for T-Rex
T.Rex & Marc Bolan was one of my absolute biggest influences. Especially Tony Visconti’s string arrangements with Flo & Eddie (Howard and Mark from the Turtles) vocals. I have every official, alternate, out-take, and bootleg of anything Marc Bolan ever did. He ranged from 50s DooWop, to Folk, to Glam, to Funk & Metal & did it less than a 10 year career, all while being acceptable to the masses. Extremely eclectic without ever being bizarre like Zappa. He sold millions and millions and had many number 1s. A HUGE catalog - You should check out the original 1969 version of “King of The Rumbling Spires” by Tyrannosaurus Rex. (They were a duo then.) You will appreciate the drums!
Don’t care for this version….but I do love this song and listen to it often. Marc Bolan & T Rex were one of the progenitors of Glam Rock back in the day along with bands like Sweet, Slade, The New York Dolls, just to name a few. Marc died in a car accident in 1977. He was 29.
UK Glam. The Midnight Special which this performance is from, quite often had their acts that were live to shorten or speed up their set due to commercial time. The studio lp version is a much more smoother groove.
Lead singer is Marc Bolan. Unfortunately, he died in a car crash 4 years after this performance. Only 29 years old. I love this live version. Nothing beats the energy and chaos of a live show. Especially the classic rock era, 60's-80's. And yes, I'm likely biased because that's basically my youth era (born in 1963). I'm old as dirt. 🤣
Love all T Rex and Marc Bolan . For a very long time flowers were left at the site of the accident in which he died. For all I know itvamstill happens - I no longer live in London so it's some time since I've travelled that road. I think my "era" is lasting a long time? - was born in 1944. Always loved, and still love, rock, hard rock, heavy metal, plus singers with big voices like Elvis Presley,,, Meat Loaf, Scott Walker, and Australia's John Farnham whose cover of Long Way to the Top, with his own band, backing singers and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is timeless. It would be a dreary world without music. Aug'24. UK. E ❤.
In 1973 I was 13-14 and had begun being able to go to concerts. I saw a lot of acts even in that first year but not these guys, though I would have loved to have seen them. So catchy while still rocking out. Marc Bolan was a real showman and got much better from the time of this concert until his death in an automobile accident in 1977.
The two guys that introduced them were the previous performers on the show, seals and crofts. Another group you should check out. Summer Breeze is now stuck in my head. 😂
Your reaction was priceless! Between your reaction and the so called "performance," I am laughing so much, that I am crying. 😅 Marc Bolan was the singer and guitarist. I think they had a few other songs if I remember correctly.
One of my all time fav clips! As pure as the nose candy they had before they went on :-) 71-73 T-Rex were huge in the UK. Not long after this clip Marc Bolan becomes romantically entwined with the backing singer wearing the red jumpsuit (Gloria Jones...singer of the original Tainted Love). In '77 they're both involved in a car crash just outside London and Marc was fatally injured.
This was Marc Bolan / Trex trying to get into the US. Bolan/Trex were huge whilst he was a live. in the UK and some of Europe. Marc brought out some classic songs that still stand the test of time.
The band the Power Station, which was comprised of Duran Duran’s John Taylor (bass) and Andy Taylor (guitar), plus solo artist Robert Palmer (vocals) and ex-Chic member Tony Thompson (drums) did a pretty cool cover of this song in 1985.
The girl closest to Marc was his girlfriend and inspiration for the song. She has sang it more tame than that. Marc has given multiple inspirations for the song. Most often about sex and/or the "dark spot" on the Gong. Other interviews he has implied it was about dropping acid (his primary vice). Other interviews he has said it was just about making a loud noise. Marc was incredible talent. But he was rarely clean or sober. Some of his primary band members: bass player, drummer and rhythm guitarist, say he was constantly one one. A young Elton John was invited to join the band but he couldn't last a month. He did make some appearances with the band but he said the amount of intoxication was too High even for him. While he dabbled in things, he was trying to stay focused on his career and couldn't while around Marc...
Check out the "Power Stations" version of this song. Robert Palmer vocals with the Taylor boys from Duran Duran (Andy and John) and Tony Thompson from Chic on Drums. I think you will love it since it's percussion strong!
