We love Split Enz in Australia. They are from New Zealand. This is from 1980. This spent 13 weeks at number 1 here. Tim and Neil Finn wrote the songs and lead sing. Their voices sit so well together. Neil is very young here. When Split Enz broke up he then went on to form Crowded house. Someone asked Paul Mccartney what is it like to be the world's greatest songwriter. He said he didn't know you would have to ask Neil Finn.

Neil Finn is a titan of kiwi music. Split Enz were his brother Tim's band and Tim sings lead on many of their songs. The Enz were known for their way out clothes and hair esp in their early days. Their suits were on display for a time at our national museum. Neil joined Split Enz later on then when they broke up he formed Crowded House which Tim briefly joined for a period. They also released solo albums and an album as a duo, The Finns. Both have sons. Liam and Harper, who have released singles.

      @@WeirdAlpha Hi Tamara.
The show was in my hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan Canada at the "Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts", a 2000 seat theater with immaculate acoustics. In fact, when it was completed in 1970, it was rated as having the 2nd best accoustics of any theater in North America. Musical artists absolutely LOVE performing there. You can see the astonishment in their faces, as the music they've played 1000s of times before has never sounded as GREAT to THEM!
It was one of the 1st theaters to utilize a Computer assisted architectural design for the interior of the performing space, and had the space age looking acoustic tiles in an angled ceiling.
Back in the day, no matter where I purchased a ticket for a Rock Show there, I would simply "rush" the stage and stand/ dance right at the lip of center stage! Which was ok, because no one actually sat in their seats....its a Rock Concert, not a funeral!
The very 1st band to play the Center of the Arts was PINK FLOYD!
      SPLIT ENZ was wonderful!
The lighting seemed to form coloured geometric shapes, like a large cone lying on its side.
I think the drummer was sporting a beatnick-like goatee. I'd never seen a drum kit set on an angle in the back corner. Allowed you to see more of him, instead of hidden behind tom toms.
But as mentioned, it is the accoustics of this theater that made all the percussion and Bass throb through the atmosphere. It was like a musical trance the whole night!
40 years ago, I could REALLY DANCE!
This venue is now known as the "Conexus Arts Centre".
I also saw THE POLICE there in 1980! From the same front stage vantage point. I could have tugged on STING'S pant leg all night long!
      Cheers!🍒✌🍁✌🍒

Awesome you reacted to this song, because I listened to their CD, The Best of Split Enz - History Never Repeats, just this morning! Split Enz was founded in the '70s by Tim Finn and Phil Judd. After Judd left, Tim's younger brother, Neil was invited to join. The band had many members and several line-ups; their earlier period included circus-like makeup and costumes. Other favorite songs of theirs are: Message to My Girl, Six Months in a Leaky Boat, Dirty Creature, One Step Ahead, and Give It A Whirl.

Split Enz was founded by Tim Finn. Eventually they hired his kid teenaged brother Neil Finn -- same singer-guitarist from the later Crowded House.
This was Split Enz' first hit, written by Neil.

Those Finn brothers were ridicously handsome and you were either a Tim girl or a Neil girl. I loved Tim. Still do. They were a band of phenomenal musicians and two brilliant singer songwriters. Just check out every Enz song. You won't be disappointed.

Nigel Griggs on bass, he's serious talent as well as Eddie Rayner on synth/keyboards, Noel Crombie you MUST look up, he is ONE OF A KIND artist, he designed and made the Split Enz clothes just for starters, percussionist, inventor, inspired individual.... A little background for you, Jay. Split Enz got started in the mid to late 70s in Auckland, New Zealand, mostly starting when Tim Finn (the Guitarist in the Brown suit) and the other members were students at Auckland University. There were some personnel changes as they became more successful and Tim asked his younger Brother, Neill - the singer on this track, to join the band. In the early 80's they shifted to Australia, where they became very successful, then to England where it started well, then ran into a small shipwreck when they released a new single called "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" - JUST as the Falklands War started. Not unnaturally the Thatcher government had it banned. The band returned to Australia and kept on churning out great songs before "Officially" splitting up in the late 80s. Neil Finn went on the be part of the startup of Crowded House as their lead singer, and Tim embarked on a solo career. Most recently, Neil was invited to replace Lindsay Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac and has moved to LA, where he is currently based, recording with the Mac. Neil and Stevie Nicks have just released a song dedicated to assisting the Homeless here in Auckland,

Split Enz began in New Zealand as a very theatrical band and were quite radical. They were very heavy on the makeup and costumes and they acted almost like puppets, both on stage and in videos. By the time this song came out in 1980 on the True Colours album they had been signed by Mushroom Records in Australia and had "softened" their look somewhat to become more commercially appealing. This song really launched them internationally.
Check out some of their earlier stuff to see such as "Late Last Night", "My Mistake" and "I See Red" to get an idea of how different and unique they were, then compare that to later songs "History Never Repeats", "Six Months In A Leaky Boat" and "Message To My Girl" and the change in look and sound is plain to see.
Awesome band and they were great to see live in their heyday.

Tim Finn started Split Enz in New Zealand in the 70's. They were active through the 70's and early 80's. When his baby brother, Neil, was old enough he also joined the band. Neil and Tim then traded off on lead vocals. If you want to hear some Split Enz with Tim Finn as lead singer, check out the gorgeous I Hope I Never, or Six Months in a Leaky Boat.
Also, if you are in the mood for more try My Mistake, Straight Old Line, History Never Repeats, Shark Attack, I See Red, Message to My Girl, One Step Ahead, Dirty Creature, and Poor Boy. All classic Split Enz.
