Laineylou, I also really appreciate Toni's 2 wonderful sister singing backup. They always get overlooked, and shouldn't. Sedaka's version is also great. He wrote it and sang it on his 1974 comeback album, but Captain & Tennille made it the unbelievable hit it was. It was also a product of when America still had optimism, completely gone now for decades never to return.

I think I remember hearing that they’d gotten divorced because of his health issues, but they stayed together. I couldn’t find anything that confirmed that, but I swear I remember hearing that there were legal issues about her being his caretaker. (Again, I could be remembering that all wrong.) Also, he had been The Beach Boys keyboard player in the early 1970s. Apparently Mike Love gave him “the Captain” nickname. And she was a backup singer for them. And apparently she did backup vocals on the Pink Floyd album, “The Wall”. And a strange twist... Bruce Johnston also sang backup, and he’s been the Beach Boys keyboard player for years. Bruce Johnston also wrote the Barry Manilow song, “I Write the Songs”. 🤪🤪🤪

Mike Love gave Daryl Dragon the nickname "Captain Keyboard" when he played keyboard for The Beach Boys. The nickname stuck. So he added the captains hat when he was with Toni Tenille.

Toni was also a temporary Beach Boy in the early 70's. She and the Captain were friends with the band and toured with them for a short time. There song Lonely Nights is another great song from them that you don't hear as much as their other hits.

The Captain & Teneille were extremely hot in the '70's. You might also want to check out: "The Way I Want to Touch You," "Do It to me One More Time" and "Back to the Island." Also, this song was written by legendary singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka who was a huge artist in his own right during the early '60's. Sedaka had a major comeback about the time this song came out thanks to an album entitled "Sedaka's Back". You might check the following Neil Sedaka Songs: "Bad Blood (with Elton John)", "The Immigrant" and "Love Among the Shadows." Pure pop magic!

Great song from songwriter Neil Sedaka, saw him in concert some years ago, he was incredible. He has written so many great songs J, you could check out Solitaire (which has been recorded by many artists), Calendar Girl, King of Clowns, One Way Ticket To The Blues, Our Last Song Together, Laughter In The Rain. So many impressive songs from him. Nice version ,they did it justice.

    Hey Jay!
The guy with the hat is the Captain and the girl is Tennille. They were married, and might still be if they're still around.
It looks like the backdrop is just people randomly picked off the street to sing parts of the song... that's how popular this thing was!
It was so popular and had so much air play that pretty much everybody knew the words.
I guarantee you, you could not turn on a radio in those days without hearing this song within the hour!
Also, if you'll notice the small keyboard on top of Tennille's piano is what she's playing the bass hand with.
Being a working musician back in the those days, myself, that is most likely a monophonic bass synthesizer, maybe even a "Moog" Synth, which is still popular today if you can find one!
I can tell in the video she's definitely playing the basehand on it.
From what I've read there was no bass guitar in it, just her playing that bass synth while playing the piano with the other hand. I have to admit I did like the song.
I was a real hard rocker at the time, but being a bass player how could I not like that song... the bass line carried the whole thing.

Darryl Dragon was the Captain. She is Toni Tennille. The backup singers are her sister. The song was written by Neil Sedaka, who had largely faded from the charts at this time (& you should check out Calendar Girl and the original Breaking Up Is Hard to Do), which is why they sing, "Sedaka is back" in the fade.
Give You Better Shop Around & Lonely Nights a listen.

At the end of the song, you can hear them say "Sedaka is back". Which is a nod to Neil Sedaka, who wrote the song and had several hits back in the 50s (Calender Girl, Breaking Up is Hard to Do (2 versions, 1 fast, 1 slow) Oh, Carol (written about singer/songwriter Carole King) and Laughter In The Rain.)

This was the biggest song of the year back in the 1970's. They were close to being a one hit wonder, but not quite. They parlayed the song into a summer TV variety show. They also did one of the hokiest songs ever, called "Muskrat Love."

In the early 1970s, Dragon played keyboards with the Beach Boys. He was fond of wearing a white yachting cap onstage. Singer Mike Love thus dubbed him "Captain Keyboard."
Toni Tennille was briefly a rare "Beach Girl" member of the Beach Boys, too.
