Neil Finn and his brother Tim founded the band "Split Enz" here in New Zealand. When they split up Neil went to Straylia and founded Crowded House. You missed the end off this video but this was their final performance and their final song that they would play together before dis-banding. Neil has since gone on to perform with Fleetwood Mac who do perform some of Neils songs also.

To be fair, Crowded House disbanding is about as believable as Farnham's final tour. They always get back together again. They've even had more than one of these "Final Performance at the Opera House". Not that I'm complaining - Neil and Crowded House are some of my favourite artists.

Neil was not a founding member of Split Enz, he replaced former guitarist Phil Judd, who went on to form The Swingers, and had a hit here in Australia with Counting The Beat.
Paul Hester was also in Split Enz, so it was just a case of adding bassist Nick Seymour. Later, a keyboard player was added and Tim popped in and out of the band.
I feel many reaction channel make a mistake by not paying any attention to Tim's solo stuff. Staring At The Embers, Through The Years and Fraction Too Much Friction were great, and Made My Day is one of the most uplifting songs you will ever hear!

Crowded House lead singer Neil Finn wrote this song. He explained in an interview with Goldmine: "I wrote that on my brother's piano. I'm not sure if I remember what the context was, exactly, but it was just about on the one hand feeling kind of lost, and on the other hand sort of urging myself on: Don't dream it's over. That one actually fell out literally, without me thinking about it too much." Definitions of deluge. a heavy rain. synonyms: cloudburst, downpour, pelting, soaker, torrent, waterspout. Peace out.

This is one of those standout songs. FWIW, if you have a convertible top, you can easily have a hole in it. A deluge is a big flood - like Noah's - which you can't catch in a paper cup. The song is about not giving up, delivered in the context of a relationship where people object to them being together, like Romeo & Juliet, rich family v poor family, etc.

Watching the music video I got a different take on the song.
I got that it was about the old world keeping a wall ( a literal wall in the case of the Berlin wall) around the younger generations to keep the status quo going.
Black v White. East v West.
      Rich v Poor...ect.
All to detract from what the globalist are really up to.
Witch is still going on today.

Neil Finn is an iconic Kiwi musician who has travelled with many band groups since the seventies. He has been acknowledged as one of the best song writers of his era. He has been performing with Fleetwood Mac over the last few years. Crowded House is an Australasian group based mainly in Australia. They were loved by fans on both sides of the Tasman Sea. PS Stan also does a great version of this song. Great reaction Britt 😀 ("Fall at Your Feet" @ Sydney Opera House)

Crowded House were always very "stream of consciousness" in their songs ~ this particular song is about sticking together, facing the challenges of everyday life, "they" being e.g. pressure from the family, a bad boss, a deadbeat job, not being where you want to be in life. As you picked up on, their name is very unassuming ~ Crowded House's songs were always about living a regular "little" life (and not being ashamed of it) ~ as opposed to most music today, which is always about being a star, wearing bling, and making it big (not actually a life most people will live). You are allowed to feel overwhelmed in your "little" non-winner regular life with Crowded House ~ they offer you comfort and even guidance in how to get through being a regular person living a regular life. It's very human - and humanE, in a sense - music. ✌😉

“It was one of those songs that came largely in one go, which doesn’t happen very often and is usually a good sign. In a sense, it was a private message from me to someone who was withdrawing from their world.” ~ Neil Finn ... So we probably can't really know what the song is about and just get to enjoy those luscious vocals and dreamy instrumentation.

Always reminds me of my grandparents. Like most countries, the Great Depression hit Canada hard too. When WWII broke out in 1939, my granddad enlisted. He'd lost his job and had a wife and seven kids to support. When they continued to scrape by, he asked for combat because a combat soldier made three times the money. He went to Juno Beach with the second wave of attack on D-Day. My dad was born in 1938, so the first memory he had of his father was when granddad came walking up their long driveway with his kitbag on his shoulder around 1945/46. I always imagine my grandparents signing letters to each other. (Granddad to Grandma) "Don't Dream it's Over". And Grandma to Granddad, "Don't Let them Win."

Have to agree with oblongsquare here... Carrack wrote some great songs, but this is pure Neil Finn. (I'm not aware of any Crowded House songs being written by Paul Carrack although, thinking about it, I can see how there's a bit of shared sensibility between Carrack and Finn when it comes to song lyrics.)

To answer your question about the picks, they're most likely just extras. Picks get lost all the time and many times, artists will throw their picks out to the audience as souvenirs. Also, while some picks do have a different sound, guitarist don't usually change the type of picks to get different sounds. Usually they just have a thickness and material they like and they just stick to that. For a future video, I'd recommend checking out Something So Strong! This is definitely my favorite of theirs, but that one is a close second.

  • @metoo7557

The picks on the stand is so that incase there is a problem (drops pick, pick breaks, or whatever happens) there is always extra picks on hand immediately and the song has the smallest amount of interruption. That's why they all do it.

Guitar picks on the mic stand - they are incase you drop them / throw them out into the crowd etc but they will all be the same pick (brand, shape. thickness, 'model'). But yes different picks will slightly effect the tone but more how you play, most guitarist will have specific picks they like to use cause its comfortable / suits their playing style

Crowded house are also very much considered a New Zealand band, the most important member - the co-founder singer song writer and guitarist of the band is a New Zealander and Crowded House was formed from the ruins of New Zealand band Split Enz breaking up, its quite hard to justify calling it an Australian band.

I remember hearing this song a lot on the radio when it first came out, but I don't think I really felt what it was about until I saw it in the Stephen King mini-series The Stand with Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald. There is a scene where two of the characters dance together while this song plays. They are trying to comfort each other because everyone else in their town has died. It is a very poignant moment. It is about not letting the obstacles in life get in between two people who care for each other. "We know that they won't win." Love in life is worth fighting for. I have loved the song ever since.

People put guitar picks on mic stands, so they are easy to grab. You can quickly grab a pick if you drop one, or you can throw them to the crowd. Neil doesn't strike me as the kind of person who throws guitar picks often. Crowded House was a band that was well respected but just couldn't really break big in the USA. This song was a huge hit though and was all over the radio. There's no question that it was their biggest song. I'm pretty sure that their drummer quit a few months before this, but came back for it. This was their final show. It was a big deal, and they were obviously loved in Australia. They did reunite in the early 2000's, but their drummer had passed away by then. They still tour with a different lineup.

The picks on the mic stand has a purpose. Picks can, and do wear out during a concert. You can also have different types of picks on the stand for different styles of play. It also allows you ready access to extra picks so you can randomly chuck a pick into the crowd and grab a new one. really makes the crowd react.

Sir Paul McCartney is quoted as saying: "I wish I could write music like Neil Finn" - and he is a huge fan.
You cut the video off too soon.
Context...this was their final song of their final concert farewell... Don't dream it's over, so it was emotional especially for the crowd there.
    💡Always play em out 👍

Long time guitar player here. And yeah it's pretty standard during live performance to use a pick holder on the mic stand.
And yeah different kinds of picks have different effects but usually there is a certain pick that you prefer and you just have a bunch of them up there.
Of course it's handy if you drop one but it really serves another purpose, which is every once in a while you flip the pick out into the audience with a flourish, and then either play with your fingers for a bit or immediately grab another pick and keep going. It's just a ritual of live performance for many many years now.

There are SO many great Crowded House tracks to list off, my fave would be Pineapple Head but everybody has already suggested their most popular hits - it’s a biiiig and very enjoyable rabbit hole to delve into - and then there’s Split Enz, if you can find Neil doing a live acoustic solo version of Message To My Girl on the piano, your ears will thank you! Absolutely love this band and Neil Finn, saw CH live in November 2022 and they are aging like a fine wine! 👌🏻

'They' is life and all the things that can get in between a couple in a relationship... a very talented song writer. Their best work 'I feel' is the album 'Together Alone.' it is a masterpiece, Neil says the best song he ever wrote, is Private Universe on that album, but Distance Sun was the hit off it. Give it a whirl, its gold.

I put Neil Finn in the league with Lennon and McCarthy (the Beatles) as a lyricist and songwriter. Crowded House produced some of the best, most creative pop music of the past 40 years. (And they're still at it.)
My wife and I have a Crowded House song that's "ours," but it's "Italian Plastic."

The song is about trying to maintain a relationship.
'They' are the naysayers, the people who are perhaps telling the other person in the relationship that it is over.
But to return to the top:
Freedom within and freedom without. This should be self explanatory, there is so much freedom inside of a relationship but a lot of people will try to justify that being outside of a relationship is actually real freedom. Eh, the lyrics are correct.
Towing the car, hole in the roof, possessions are causing suspicion. He doesn't have a lot. No working car, house in disrepair, not a lot to offer materially, suspecting someone else in her life, a sugar daddy adding to the possessions which he knows he hasn't bought.
Tales of waste and war while you turn to see what the tv guide is saying. The other person in the relationship is avoiding serious conversation and just immediately looking for the entertainment.
Finally trying to meet where she is, his own heart pounding, maybe dreading that she is about to end it (the shadows closing in).
But still trying to make it work, to remind her that the relationship doesn't need to be over.
Also, correct on all 3 counts regarding guitar picks. Some people keep dropping theirs, some break them, some might have different thicknesses on hand, particularly if they are switching guitars. Some players just want extras to throw out into the crowd.

guitarists want a bunch of picks handy because they drop them as well as they get worn places in them from the guitar strings....so they need to quickly have access to the next one.....some players go thru2 dozen a night.....some throw a lot out to the fans as they have the picks personalized with their names and logos.....

Hey Brit, the thing about songs like this is that the lyrics mean what they mean to you alone. A good example is the Jimi Hendrix version of "All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan. Who knows what that is about, but you cannot stop listening. Love your work ♥from Australia.

He was in his brothers band Split enz when he was younger and they were very different compared to this, worth a look, some beautiful songs there, hahaha and they dressed up with face paint an all, it was the 80s, Neil invited other guests from around the world and did a concert early 2000s, he asked his sons band who they wanted and They got to play with Eddie Vedder of course, 7 world's collide. On the pick thing...
Yeah, when playing, especially on a high-energy song, you can have picks flip out of your hand, so having extras where you can grab them in an instant and not lose the rhythm of the song is invaluable.

  • @hubrisnaut

lol, you reaction kids are a joy, "deluge" is a word for an overwhelming flood, powerful downpour of rain or 'inundate with a great quantity of something'. Picks are usually all the same of a musician's choice. Ingwe Malmstien talks about his hard pick selection and why he has so many. The feel gets worn out, chipped, broken or they come to a place in a song where one is not needed, like when finger picking or hammering. Eddie is a classic pick tosser.

I’ve always wondered if he meant “Don’t dream, (because) it’s over” (a message of sadness and resignation)
    or
“Don’t dream (that) it’s over (a message of hope and perseverance through anything).
I’ve always leaned towards the latter, because it seems like he’s willing to fight for the love he’s referring to.
Part of the ambiguity for me stems from the melancholic undertones of the song itself, which would suggest the ending of said love.
