Not sharing much information on the victim in a stalking case is the most respectful way to go I think as their privacy has already been violated so much by the stalker.

Finally some sort of a resolution. Obviously, nothing can lesson the pain and loss you all have to live with. But 50 years is as good as life without parole in the vast majority of cases, since life expectancy in prison is lower than in the rest of the population. What happened to your friend must be extremely difficult to live with, and I'm so, so sorry for your loss!

Stalkers are genuinely terrifying. I've had harrowing experiences with one. It's not always a person you'd expect. Vigilance is dire in such circumstances. This guy had a few crossed wires, that much is clear. And they're clearly dangerous. Stay alert everyone.

  • @RavenWing1972

    Woah looking good Britt!
As you already know my story, I will skip most of the details. My ex husband was a brutal, violent man. We were married for 15 years and the injuries he inflicted on me had me in ICU twice. I can't remember a day where I didn't get hit.
Then one day in the middle of the night I strapped my balls on and we fled, with the clothes on our backs.
We were stalked relentlessly for a very long time. I was so scared. Facing him in court was so terrifying, as the Judge spoke to me I puked all over our desk. That's how scared I was. Eventually I won the case and he wasn't allowed to know where we lived. I knew he would find us, so I had us move countries. Even then I feel like I have to look over our shoulder everywhere we go.
Stalking is (or was in my case) about control. He had to control everything about my life and when he couldn't do that anymore, his poor little narcissistic brain couldn't cope and he really lost it. I speak out on the importance of taking stalking seriously wherever I can as not every person that has to go through it is as lucky as I was.

It's so great that you're bringing all of these stalking cases to light because most of them I hadn't heard of. I think a lot of it speaks to the fact that our mental health systems all around the world need to be revamped. Not to mention our law enforcement system because I have to believe that if law enforcement had intervened in most of these cases in a serious and appropriate way that most of these things could have been prevented.

I have no idea why some becomes stalkers. I mean I´m a huge Benedict Cumberbatch-fan, but I´m not gonna find out where he lives, and begin to haunt him and his family. It must be because some crossed vires in the brain, to make you stalk someone. I really have no idea why, someone would do this to another person. As always, well done Brittney. Have a great weekend fellow-Bratpackers. Stay safe, see y´all monday.

Working in critical care for many years, I’d be curious if he had any neurological issues going on due to the that fact that so many people said it was completely out of character. It really seems there was a pretty quick, steady progression of change in his behavior. While not very common, I can think of a couple odd patient cases where a change of behavior was noted and then there was an acute event that prompted family to call EMS, we do a complete work up, and they were found to have large brain tumors, one also had a necrotic cavitation. I’ve seen severe dementia in patients whose symptoms have already debilitated them before 50, from being a fun loving person to aggressive and unable to care for themselves. Our frontal lobe makes us who we are: personality, impulsiveness, decision making, emotions, etc. when that is affected, either from trauma, lesions (cancerous or benign), chronic Neuro disorder, etc. it can completely change a person; it can be slowly over time or very fast.
Or maybe he had a mental breakdown. But as you were describing him prior to his change in behavior, that was my thought process.

Mental health is not taken seriously in this country as we have just seen this past week. It's brushed off or outright ignored. Then, when someone dies, it's all of a sudden something we should have dealt with. Hindsight is 20/20 for everyone in such sad circumstances. People who knew him knew he was struggling, but let it get to this point. That's the mindset I don't understand at all. I don't get stalking either, but those around him failed him. Including law enforcement.

Oof. This reminds me too much of my friend's dad. Trying not to give anything identifying away but, shortly after her mom told her dad she was divorcing him, he went in the middle of the night to absolutely DESTROY the restaurant they had built together about a decade before (do you know how dedicated you have to be to destroy an industrial oven?) and somehow rigged their old house (no one lived there but the mom went back sometimes to get stuff) to explode. She got to the house that morning and smelled something... off... so she called police. I think there were only a few hours left on whatever timer he had set? Luckily they were able to evacuate the ENTIRE street (the houses in this neighborhood are very close together) and disarm whatever he had set. He was discovered out on a boat in a local lake by ATF later that same night where he was arrested. That was such a stressful story to hear from her as it was unfolding and it was especially hard because she was in college out of state and trying to focus on her final exams.
Why do folks gotta make the WORST possible decisions in this situation? Like go to a bar and lay a random stranger like a normal depressed divorcee, don't bring the damn ATF into it!

It's a mindset that becomes very dangerous...it's like you starting thinking...everything good is gone. Kid is grown and moved on, my youth is gone, my wife/marriage is gone, this new exciting chick is gone, job is gone, friends are gone. Everything good, everything I love is gone. I got nothin left. Fuck it, go out in a blaze of glory. Now whether he meant to take the chick with him is anybody's guess.

What I'm about to say may sound unrelated, but I think it might have something to do with your question about motivation. As someone who lives less than an hour away from Lewiston where the horrific shootings happened, and who has family who live practically down the road (though they're safe, thank goodness), I have had a crazy few days and have been thinking a lot about how scary the world is. The Israel-Hamas war news itself was hard enough to listen to without this going on in my state. It feels like, as a society, people have moved away from personal responsibility for their actions and have convinced themselves that they are nothing more than slaves -- to their circumstances, to the voices in their head, to the weapons that are readily available to them. And certainly, we should do more as a country to stop horrible things from happening, but I just want everyone who feels that desperate to know that I understand what it feels like to be overwhelmed by my feelings. I have OCD and am constantly obsessed with one thing or another. I have dark, intrusive thoughts that just come out of nowhere and upset me. But at the end of the day, even if you can't be brave enough to save lives by stepping in front of gunfire or even be brave enough to get past the awful things that have happened to you, you can start with the bare minimum. You can choose not to inflict pain on others just because you're hurting. Making them into victims won't help your situation. It will just push people away and make you more miserable. And if you end up killing yourself, what will have been the point? You have the power of life and death in your hands. So why not choose life? Isn't that more noble? You can achieve something that the world has been trying to accomplish for decades, centuries even. You can help reduce crime by starting with yourself. Do it for yourself if not for us. Know in your heart you were strong enough to rise above the petty ugliness of the world.
Sorry, I just had to say that and hope it helps someone who's struggling to get their life back on track.
"It's hard to be a man when there's a gun in your hand." Tears For Fears
