That black residue is actually teflon powder that comes from the teflon rings that seals the primary shaft. It's not needed its removal, since they act as solid lubricant helping the valves to act in the valve body. Just the little magnet in the basket filter is worth cleaning, imo.
Very helpful thank you - I used this video and did it in situ on a Megane II without removing radiator or battery. The hardest part was maintaining cleanliness with carb cleaner and brake cleaner. Disconnecting the 6 connectors down the side was hard too and I did crack the plastic carrier that holds them together.
+snapdragon69 I hope you solved the problem with your gearbox, right? I cracked one connector too. Yes you can do it in situ, but the car in this video was Megane Scenic II, there was not much room in front of gearbox. It was relatively easy to remove the front bumper and radiator too.
+VideOG Yes thanks - no more Check Gearbox and the shifts are smooth as butter. Previously, they were lumpy and the next year was usually a 'hiccup'. I only needed 1 litre of ATF to do the job as I didn't drain from the bottom as I didn't want to waste 4 litres if this was not the cause. I am waiting for 4 litres to get delivered and will do the drain, refill and level soon. Cheers!
hi hope you can please help me i have a 2003 citreon 1.6 automatic with the AL4 box on only done 33,000 miles and has passed every mot i was getting a slight nudge when selecting reverse or drive an auto specialist garage said needs a range switch and input sensor and recalibrating at cost of £600 ? but also said this may not cure it and may need a new ecu which you now cant get ? i had the oil changed and the oil was black but with no contaminents in ? this seemed to improve the box however once you drive say 20 miles im now getting a clunk when going from 1st to 2nd rest are smoothe changes but theres quite a clunk and nudge worse than before ? theres no fault coming up on dashboard and does not go into limp mode !! Acompany called 3d transmissions said over the phone i will need a reconditioned box at a cost of £3000 plus vat which is way out of my budget as im retired and on disability benefit due to long covid i really want to keep car as its just passed mot had a full service and had the timing belt and water pump replaced so if any one can help me with advice i would be truly gratefull i enjoyed the video thought it was very informative please help thankyou regards terry

I had issue with solenoid valve pressure regulator and at the garage at Preston they declined they can change just valves. Sold me a whole block, which appeared is refurbished in French factory charged me 750 pounds for the refurbished block and 150 vat, 900 in total and didn't allow me to keep my old block as they had contract to return them to be refurbished or if I need keep my part the 750 was to go more..

I have been with a jerking, blinking of S, * in dashboard plus alarm sound, then, ENGINE WITH LACK OF POWER. pedal to floor and does not accelerate, the only solution at the moment is to shutdown and restart engine. I have a peugeot 206 (2005) and i have read in forums and other sites that new borg warner's solenoids don't work with old ecu software versions but apparently you didn't have to do it. Do I need to update the software or does that model come with a software version compatible with the new parts? I really don't want to go with the peugeot dealer in my country. Thank you.

@@georgeg7005 yes, if your peugeot is 2002 or newer it has the uptaded ecu software and you can use the new solenoids (I bought them for cheap on amazon but I think they are cheaper on aliexpress) change the atf and level.it correctly using a lexia scanner, I used amsoil atf (similar viscosity at low temp, more viscous at higher temps, fully syntethic, easier to find and it really felt better), level the oil, delete code using lexia and problem solved.

+Joaquín Galvan Thanks for your comment! Yes I changed only 2 solenoids. With multimeter I just compared coil resistance with old solenoids, if I remember correctly, the resistance was between 1-2 ohms. Dont forget to use correct oil in this gearbox (Renault DP0 oil). And Buena suerte!

+Harry Brecher Two solenoids are the same. I bought them from here: goo.gl/TFyT4a You need Torx 20 and 30 wrench. I reccomend to do gearbox diagnostic first. If there are pressure related errors, then change of these valves may help. There may be many other things which cause gearbox malfunctioning. Good luck!
+Harry Brecher If you do it in situ, this is a useful tool as needs less clearance than a socket wrench and takes 1/4" or the hex bits like you use in an electric screwdriver.

Hi can I add a faulty brake switch causes the gearbox to not lock up so please check your foot brake switch first. Its a lot cheaper I only found out by accident before I brought the parts. Its to make sure the engine doesn't stall. Mine stalled a couple of times and I was really confused!
do you no anything about the parking brake? since i bought the car (Grand Scenic 05 Automatic) the handbrake handle never worked its allways worked automatically on and off. i found a 25 white amp under the passenger seat and was told that was for the handbrake, my handbrake worked when i took it out and replaced it. the only problem is when i put the handbrake on the message appears PARKING BRAKE FAULT and if i go to drive off atleast 30 seconds away, the handbrake wont manually work till i take fuse out then replace it all over again ect.. any help or advice would be appreciated thanks.
Please help me, after cleaning my al4 gearbox valvebody , car isnt move fast. Reverse also very slow. Oil colour and smell fine. Not bad. Manual valve adjested, multifunction switch adjested. All solonoid valves resistance ok. Line pressure at idel - 1.84bar. When accelerating pressure drops. Learning padel shows not carried out.

i read somewhere that after you replace the valve for a revised one, you need to update the gearbox software, as the old software is not compatible with the revised valve. maybe thats your problem?
I just did this repair and got the exact same problem. it was because I didn't connect the rod to the quadrant gear at the top. the video didn't show that bit at the end (apart from that the video was really helpful!)

Hi I have a question! Why this valves go bad?? I have disassembly one and I can see nothing ! And I have recently make a mistake, I had buy some valves with black connector and they are not Borg Warner. Put it in the gearbox and it was almost impossible to shift! After 1 minute the gearbox warning come on. So I clean the old ones and put them again. And the gearbox worked again and no oil pressure drop. I notice after a while that under 2000rpm it likes to lock up and leave it likes to lock up and leave it…………. Small problem for me. I have maybe changed the pressure valve with the lock up valve and maybe one of them was practically faulty! So not every valve with Black connector works on 100Hz PS.: I also clean the small filter in the unit that I think restrict the flow of oil and change the small O rings on the gearbox behind the valve unit

Hello, quick question if you could help me please. After changing the two solenoids the gearbox works as in i don't get the bang anymore and the error(Check gearbox), instead the car acts like sometimes the clutch is slipping(and i have an error Electronic fault). After the Electronic fault error disappears the gearbox works fine without the clutch slipping. Do you think it could be a software problem or something else mechanical needs to be changed? The car is a Renault Megane 2 hatchback 2007. Thank you

hello, thank you very much for the video. Befor im getting to open up my Peugeot 307 sw automatic gearbox. Whanted to ask if this repair will help in my case. Driving about 90km/h gearbox is in 4th gear, if I let the speed to drop to abot 70-80 km/h without use the break pedal, most of the time car will get a bang, gearbox faulty and 4th gear will not work until you restart engine by turning the car off and on again. If img going on 90 and use break pedal to slow down, im most likely will not get the bang, fault and loss of 4th gear. This been going for 6months, tried flushing the oil. My car has 109000km on speedo. Im sure oil filter havent been changed. Thank you in advance. Really good video again.
@@sb6162 Hi, I've change those, broke some bolts outside and inside valve body, but managed to complete the work, it took me a whole day 😃. I did around 10k km and now the gearbox is shifting hard 2-3 and sometimes from 3-4, sometimes it gaves me gearbox error, but not solenoid error, I am going to try to change them again this spring, hopefully it will shift ok again and to be able to sell the car as I have a baby and I need a bigger car. Worst auto gearbox ever anyway....
@@sb6162 Congrats, I have 307cc from 2005, I didn't do any software update as the old ones were Borg Warner, black ones. For 308 from 2008 I would first check if gearbox is al4. If it is al4 for sure you don't need any software update

Jou must unbolt the filling cap, which is located on top of the gearbox. You may need to remove the battery and battery bracket to see it. You need hose and funnel for easier refill.
There is 2 bolts which could be refill... One is torx and its very easily available but darn near impossible to open with my tools, torx bolt gives up before it open. Another one is big regular bolt hidden under some plastic electric thingy. Both look like they could be the one. Which one is it? Thank you. (Its amazing how I can find tons of help videos how to fix but refill is nowhere to be found.)

Followed your video (that is awesome by the way) but when i have changed and was ready too drive it wont move, dosent matter how mutch a rew the engine on either D or R. Have i missed something? And where's the pressure regulator? My Laguna's automatic transmission fails on high revs between 3rd and 4th. Maybe these are our problem too. ( BTW when I don't push it hard, the transmission just works well, so I have to push gas pedal carefully when it's shifting from 3rd to 4th...)

+Kalle Vihavainen Kiitos! You can change them without taking the whole block into a pieces. It is reccomended to clean inside the labyrinth also, but to be honest there was not much dirt inside.
I have a C3 2007 72,000kms , auto , the gears sticks , slip and over revs after driving for 20-30mins. Drained and replaced transmission fluid and still the same . Anyone know the solution ?

you have to split the gearbox,inside the housing,is a filter

How long did the fix last? Cause I heard the problem came again after 50k till 80k KM

Hi can I add a faulty brake switch causes the gearbox to not lock up so please check your foot brake switch first. Its a lot cheaper I only found out by accident before I brought the parts. Its to make sure the engine doesn't stall. Mine stalled a couple of times and I was really confused!

(Grand Scenic 05 Automatic) the handbrake handle never worked its
allways worked automatically on and off. i found a 25 white amp under
the passenger seat and was told that was for the handbrake, my handbrake
worked when i took it out and replaced it. the only problem is when i
put the handbrake on the message appears PARKING BRAKE FAULT and if i go
to drive off atleast 30 seconds away, the handbrake wont manually work
till i take fuse out then replace it all over again ect.. any help or

after cleaning my al4 gearbox valvebody , car isnt move fast. Reverse also very slow. Oil colour and smell fine. Not bad. Manual valve adjested, multifunction switch adjested. All solonoid valves resistance ok.

i read somewhere that after you replace the valve for a revised one, you need to update the gearbox software, as the old software is not compatible with the revised valve. maybe thats your problem?
I have also read about it, but I used original valves without any software manipulation.
Perhaps something was mechanically incorrectly reassembled, I mean the gear selector mechanism. You need to reopen valve cover and check it.
I just did this repair and got the exact same problem. it was because I didn't connect the rod to the quadrant gear at the top. the video didn't show that bit at the end (apart from that the video was really helpful!)

Hi I have a question! Why this valves go bad?? I have disassembly one and I can see nothing ! And I have recently make a mistake, I had buy some valves with black connector and they are not Borg Warner. Put it in the gearbox and it was almost impossible to shift! After 1 minute the gearbox warning come on. So I clean the old ones and put them again. And the gearbox worked again and no oil pressure drop. I notice after a while that under 2000rpm it likes to lock up and leave it likes to lock up and leave it…………. Small problem for me. I have maybe changed the pressure valve with the lock up valve and maybe one of them was practically faulty! So not every valve with Black connector works on 100Hz
PS.: I also clean the small filter in the unit that I think restrict the flow of oil and change the small O rings on the gearbox behind the valve unit

I used original Renault DP0 oli. There are some oils from other manufacturers which can be used.

Hello, quick question if you could help me please. After changing the two solenoids the gearbox works as in i don't get the bang anymore and the error(Check gearbox), instead the car acts like sometimes the clutch is slipping(and i have an error Electronic fault). After the Electronic fault error disappears the gearbox works fine without the clutch slipping. Do you think it could be a software problem or something else mechanical needs to be changed? The car is a Renault Megane 2 hatchback 2007. Thank you

Driving about 90km/h gearbox is in 4th gear, if I let the speed to drop to abot 70-80 km/h without use the break pedal, most of the time car will get a bang, gearbox faulty and 4th gear will not work until you restart engine by turning the car off and on again. If img going on 90 and use break pedal to slow down, im most likely will not get the bang, fault and loss of 4th gear. This been going for 6months, tried flushing the oil. My car has 109000km on speedo. Im sure oil filter havent been changed. Thank you in advance. Really good video again.

@@sb6162 Hi, I've change those, broke some bolts outside and inside valve body, but managed to complete the work, it took me a whole day 😃. I did around 10k km and now the gearbox is shifting hard 2-3 and sometimes from 3-4, sometimes it gaves me gearbox error, but not solenoid error, I am going to try to change them again this spring, hopefully it will shift ok again and to be able to sell the car as I have a baby and I need a bigger car. Worst auto gearbox ever anyway....
@@sb6162 Congrats, I have 307cc from 2005, I didn't do any software update as the old ones were Borg Warner, black ones. For 308 from 2008 I would first check if gearbox is al4. If it is al4 for sure you don't need any software update

Jou must unbolt the filling cap, which is located on top of the gearbox. You may need to remove the battery and battery bracket to see it. You need hose and funnel for easier refill.
There is 2 bolts which could be refill... One is torx and its very easily available but darn near impossible to open with my tools, torx bolt gives up before it open. Another one is big regular bolt hidden under some plastic electric thingy. Both look like they could be the one. Which one is it? Thank you. (Its amazing how I can find tons of help videos how to fix but refill is nowhere to be found.)

Hi, i run in too a big problem when i replaced the two solinods on my peugeot 307 automatic. Followed your video (that is awesome by the way) but when i have changed and was ready too drive it wont move, dosent matter how mutch a rew the engine on either D or R. Have i missed something? I refilled the amount of oil whit new oil and amount. Any ideas? Sry for my english

I reccomend to do gearbox diagnostic first. If there are pressure related errors, then change of these valves may help. There may be many other things which cause gearbox malfunctioning. Good luck!

And where's the pressure regulator? My Laguna's automatic transmission fails on high revs between 3rd and 4th. Maybe these are our problem too. ( BTW when I don't push it hard, the transmission just works well, so I have to push gas pedal carefully when it's shifting from 3rd to 4th...)
hey bro thank you for the video it was very helpfull , my car was running smooth just the auto and check engine was ccoming on all the time the scanner did say selenoid so I did what have done in the video and the plug of the selenoid was not connected rather pluging it I just changed both of them did everything as the vid now my car doesn't take D gear , any help ?? thank you

+Kalle Vihavainen Kiitos! You can change them without taking the whole block into a pieces. It is reccomended to clean inside the labyrinth also, but to be honest there was not much dirt inside.

I have a C3 2007 72,000kms , auto , the gears sticks , slip and over revs after driving for 20-30mins. Drained and replaced transmission fluid and still the same . Anyone know the solution ?
