    I know this is an old video, but I am quite interested in how the twin carb setup worked with the kickdown "rod". I currently drive a single carb HIF38 Mini automatic, and the kickdown rod is connected to the throttle on the carb. I have been thinking about upgrading the carb to an HIF44 or set of twins, but I discarded the idea of twin carbs simple because I have a feeling it would require a bespoke bracket in order to connect the kickdown rod for the gearbox to the throttle.

    by the looks of it the engine and gearbox might have come out of a later mini since the engine isnt green neither the gearbox. here in the uk the mini was offered with an automatic gearbox till 1992

    I thought that cable ties were to high profile for the outer side of the boot?

    • @minimania
      @minimania  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, they fit without an issue.

    • @andytilney7609
      @andytilney7609 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you are correct they fit without issue, they also fall off without issue, fitting cable ties to C/V and pot joints is very bad practice, why don't you fit the correct boot clips,

    Great video, I started my conversion at the moment, I#m replacing the engine in my 1993 1275 auto from one from a late 1275 MPI so this will defiantly help. I decided to am stripping it down to put and then the replace everything that I need from the MPI including subframe, wiring loom, etc etc. However, I don't know though if the I need to modify the floor when swapping out the auto selector with the manual assembly?? Keep up the good work.

      Hmm...Interesting choice to go to the MPI ...normally we avoid those since they require the ECU and front radiator setup. It seems like you're adding a lot of complications to this swap that we would never attempt.
      However, the rod change gear lever should right through the floor in the same place. I'm doubting you'll need to modify the floor much to make it work as I'm not aware that the floorpans were specific for Automatics.

    Would like to know what is used to hold the bottom arm of the gear shift in place and how or from witch side do one remove it in order to free the shift from the gearbox?

    How about swapping in the other direction? Explanation of the differences in the block? Will all that fit a Moke?

    • @minimania
      @minimania  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The procedure for a Moke would have to be from a manual to an automatic since no Mokes were factory autos. Then you would need to add the auto front subrame and custom fabricate the mount for the auto shifter.
      The differences in auto and manual blocks isn't the main thing - it's the gearboxes. They mount differently because the mounts are different. That's why using the spacers is necessary when going from auto to manual if the subframe is not changed.

    What type of oil do the automatic gear takes and does it share the oil with the motor ??

    • @minimania
      @minimania  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It takes 10W-30 or 40 standard engine oil (non-synthetic) - and yes, the gearbox is the sump for the engine block - they share the oil.

    What thickness was the spacers you used between the mounts and engine, to take up the subframe distance?

    • @minimania
      @minimania  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ones we used were about 3/8" thick, if memory serves. However, they should have been about half that thick.
      Here's the kit we now offer for this: www.minimania.com/part/MSSK052/Classic-Mini-Engine-Mount-Conversion-Kit-Auto-Subframe-To-Manual-Engine

      Thanks mine are roughly that spec. If not, a little thinner. Which sounds about right. Thank you!

    Ruin a van with the AP auto !!, one of the cleverest gearboxes of all time, hot shift and left foot braking makes this super. Nuts.

    if you convert a automatic to a manual does this look exactly the same as a mini that was a manual from stock

    • @minimania
      @minimania  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, for the most part. You'd have to really look to be able to see what had been changed. Outwardly there's no way to tell the difference.

    • @rogerhudson9732
      @rogerhudson9732 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It looks basically the same except for having a clutch pedal to bother with and no straight forward/backward stick.
      The AP hot-shiftable auto/semi-auto was one of the great automotive developments of the 60s, and is still great.
      People just haven't maintained them properly, the right oil and regular changes of filter and oil , cleaning the magnetic particle trap.

    Do you still have the engine/automatic trans that came out of the van?

  • @grahamatkinson639
    @grahamatkinson639 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    didn't some minis actually come with an automatic gearbox? because I've seen them before they were called the Mini-O-Matics or the his or her gearbox and it was automatic or you could shift it without a clutch. it's like the modern cars with the fake standard shifting but in a mini.

    • @minimania
      @minimania  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean a semi-automatic transmission? No, they came with Autos and 4-speed manuals only.

      As far as we know, the vans, Estates (Countryman), and the pick ups were available from US Dealers during the MkI era.
