  • One of the most northerly locations in North Lincolnshire this is located near the Northern end of the Lincoln Cliff overlooking Trent Falls, the confluence of the River Trent and the River Ouse. The Cliff is formed of Triassic Mudstone, which runs roughly North to South. There’s a steep ridge to the West of the village, which gives the village a panoramic view of the two rivers
It’s not all about the rivers. If like me, you’ve never been here before, this is a place you will want to come to after watching this video. It is absolutely amazing for a lot of other reasons. Part of it is a conservation area. That would the oldest part which includes Julian's Bower, Countess Close, and the hamlet of Walcot - all of which we’ll see as we journey around.
The village was once thought to be the location that the Romans called Aquis, but that name is now usually associated with the town of Buxton in Derbyshire, its full title being Aquis Arnemetiae. It appears in the Domesday Book as Alchebarge. Normally anywhere with the word “borough” in its name would mean a fort or a castle, but here that’s not the case
What it lacks in terms of amenities, it more than makes up for with landmarks. Julian’s Bower is a turf maze that overlooks the Flats. Although referred to as a maze, being unicursal - meaning it only has one way in and one path through, it is more accurately a labyrinth. Speaking of the Flats, that’s where the Ouse and Trent combine to form the Humber, one of the most breathtaking views I’ve ever seen
Let’s not forget Walcot, which also has some important bits of history to it, but this video is all about ALKBOROUGH.

Just a little more information; the house opposite the cafe is Tower House and dates back to 1770. It was built by Andrew Wilkinson who was a captain in the Royal Navy - you can find more information in the British museum and his grave is in the church yard. Tower House was owned by Sarah Gaunt and her husband, after whom Sarah Gaunt Gardens is named - just across from the Coronation Club. She did a lot of things for the village and was instrumental in bringing mains sanitation and electricity to the village, hence Sarah Gaunt Gardens was named after her. One of her sons, John Gaunt who lived in Tower House and recently passed away and one of her daughters still lives in the village in Sarah Gaunt Gardens.

It's a lovely walk in the woods along the top of the cliff to Kel Well. The well is good for finding tiny star shaped fossils and also the “devil's toenails”
