The Chesterfield is a lovely canal. We moored in Retford for a few days, no trouble. Very nice town. Realise you probably know every inch of the Chesterfield by now!! 👌
Its 35 years since I've been down to the Chesterfield canal from gringley. We were often down there playing and swimming. Once fell in at top lock. The brickworks is possibly being converted to a marina.
@@MinimalList ha ha that's what you say now, but later in the video it was removed! Just a bit of fun, I wasn't doubting your ability to remove the chimney when needed, but have heard many stories of lost and damaged chimneys 😊😊👍👍
We’ve only had one close call with ours, thankfully... we whip it off pretty much anytime we move, except when we know the way ahead’s clear of low bridges, as having it off means a much colder boat! M
The dream is to see it open all the way to Chesterfield, there's even plans for a basin in the centre of town. Thanks for continuing to take us along on your cruises.
We hired the boat you moored next to in West Stockwith Basin in 2017, glad to see they are still around. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the Chesterfield Canal as I have followed all your adventures. We hire 2 or 3 times a year and have covered several of your journeys apart from tidal rivers. Sorry you could not get to Canada but it probably best to stay isolated in your narrow boat in these times than getting stranded abroad. Stay safe and enjoy the Chesterfield Canal.
I hope this find you all well! Funny thing today, I noticed I dont duck when you go under a low bridge any more! Thanks again for taking me along! A dream life. Stay safe and healthy!!!!
Thank you for the great Vlog. I agree, that is a really lovely canal and there is some very pleasant scenery along the way. I hope George and Jo enjoyed the opportunity to just get out and walk along the towpath. He has been such a great partner for you and he really is living a dog's dream life. So sorry that the Canada trip had to be called off, could be a few months yet before you get to see your Mom, Michael. Hope she is keeping well and safe. Stay Safe everybody.
What a lovely area in which to be stuck. Good move not getting on the flight.. I know so many people currently stuck thousands of miles from their homes. Have never seen much of that canal.. looks lovely. Take care all of you.
We have been in the Chesterfield for Two month now but haven’t got past Retford. What we have seen we really love. We are lucky to be spending lockdown here.
Loved the video! hope your mum is doing well Michael. I've been following the channel for quite some time now, and really enjoy the zen views and music. It's amazing how far you can get on a boat! Thanks for being amazing creators here on TH-cam, keep up the good work! Wishing you health through these times from Edmonton, Canada
So sorry you had to cancel your trip to Canada to see Michael mum ,hope you make it there soon ,great video very interesting ,jo great cometary has usually so interesting love them all , take care keep safe please,John
Great vlog Micheal and Jo. My best stretch of the Chesterfield Canal is between Kiverton and Worksop some great countryside plus loads of locks. Keep safe and have fun..
The Chesterfield canal would be wonderful if ti ever gets to Chesterfield, especially if they build a mooring basin there like Sheffield, but currently the idea of 30 lock flight above Worksop, just for 3km of canal to Kiveton is not something I would easily convince my better half is worth doing. Last time I was in Shireoaks was 1984 filming the miners strike... nothing there now.
The Cuckoo boats - the Chesterfield Canal Trust have built one from scratch using traditional techniques and No Power Tools! When you get to Shireoaks it is moored up in the marina there. There are a good few drops of our (Lesley and myself) blood in that boat! They do Sponsored Pulls along the length of the canal to raise money, and were featured on an edition of Countryfile on BBC. Oh - and the first old brickworks you passed is being re-purposed as a new marina, allegedly.
The chesterfield has a reputation for being one of the loveliest on the system and also one of the shallowest. Certainly looks lovely . Stay safe guys and enjoy .
Thank you for continuing to post. Being in the US, I envy you the opportunity to cruise on your boat. The downside is I'm shopping for a narrow boat (although my wife has no idea that I am.) and I wish I could do what you are doing. Please stay safe and healthy and keep up the good work.
Lovely to see some cruising, hopefully restrictions will be lifted slightly before you run out of footage . I’m sorry your trip to see Michaels Mum was cancelled though, take care guys xx
Hope you are all ok in these strange times. Your right about mooring in the towns they are fine, but you are about to come to the most beautiful section of canal in the country (my opinion) Shireoaks and above . Stay safe and update when you can.
good choice staying put, we live on Vancouver Island and our Kids/Grandkids live in the Interior, breaks our hearts not to be able to visit them, stay safe guys.
Thanks - that is a lovely section. On your way back, whenever that is, do walk to the top of Gringley Hill, you can see Lincoln on a clear day. At 9:45, did George get a biscuit? He was asking nicely.
Nice vlog. Hope your mom is well Michael. My mom is in assisted living so no live visits since January. She is ok tho. In the US there have been lots of outbreaks in nursing homes... so keeping my fingers crossed... stay safe
Hope she stays safe, cause yeah here in the UK it seems it’s care homes that have been hit the worst. Mom is ok at the moment, at home and safe, just very bored. M
Thanks for another great video!! I'm behind on watching, so I'll have to catch up. I agree M has good tastes. That brick (cabin?) building sitting in a field next to a wooded area looks awesome. Reminds me of my little cottage without the brick work and chimney. Mine sits about 70 feet from the woods and overlooks several acres of grassed over muck ground that the wildlife love. P.S. Sadie says Hi and best wishes to George. P.S.S. we're happy to see you guys are doing OK! Best Wishes!!
When you get to Retford your about 1 hour away from me....Chesterfield canal trust are about to apply for planning to restore another 2.5 miles....from Staveley to Renishaw....take a look on their web page....stay safe guys....Regards Mick
Thanks guys hope you are ok up there. It's looking a little more hopeful that we can get moving soon. I was able to empty the Swamp Duck on the day before lockdown, but I have now replenished everything and just waiting for the green light. I managed to get 6 videos out for children during lock down but have wound them up today in the hope that I can do some real filming soon. Found your vlogging videos very useful and will encourage me to be a bit more organised with footage storage, but I really need a new lap top. The Chesterfield is only 30 mins away from me but would take a least a week by boat. I had planned to walk the last bit but obviously things are on hold. Take care you three. Cheers Alan. x
Boy are they ever on hold. We’d like to walk the last bit as well, or at least Jo and George would, but we’ve got to get there first, and water levels and weed are already starting to be a problem. M
Very sorry you were unable to visit Michael’s mum, but the silver lining is that you got to explore the Chesterfield! I assume you’re now self isolating on the Chesterfield? Or maybe not?? Stay well, and stay safe!
I finished work on 13th march, moved out our house on 19th march all i had to do was get on a plane to the uk and buy a narrow boat. Seemed fairly straightforwards at the time but just didnt happen. If we are lucky we may get back there by September ........ Bugger
Good Morning~Hey, maybe it's not such a bad thing not to be able to travel right now. I live on the border with Canada, and on May 10, or there about we are suppose to be treated to an Arctic Blast! So, visiting her later in the summer would probably be a better idea. xx from Northern Michigan US
The former pump house is spectacular. It was on the market a few years ago for £850,000, I remember lusting after it online! A lot of money obviously, but for what you get actually quite a bargain! Fingers crossed for a lottery win!
Sort you didn’t get to make your trip to Canada. 😕 March 17th was the last day I worked, been laid off ever since due to pandemic. I work for FCA Canada, I think we *might* be going back by May 14th or so. I enjoy your videos had lots of time to watch, or rewatch. 😁
Jo - bought your e-book about your travels last night & read it right away & loved it - it left me wanting to hear even more details about your adventures! I really don't think I could have gone to all those countries by myself, no way! I am wondering how you guys picked the name George for your dog - did you name him after that monkey that Michael befriended? lol And Michael, I'm so sorry for you that you weren't able to make the visit to your mom & hope that she is in good spirits and health & that you will be able to see her soon!!!
You two looked really nice in this video. During the exit interview, when Michael commented on his hair being a problem, I was noticing that both of your hairstyles look very good on you. I don’t typically notice such things and I think that relaxation looks very good on you both! It’s nice to see. James Brindley (sic?) had his hands full when he died. He was also working on a tunnel, as well as a lock that required some unusual changes to function properly. I am curious, now, on what happened to him. Tell me, again, what the boats on that canal were called? They weren’t live aboards and were pulled by horses.....coocoo something? Have NEVER heard of them and would like to learn more. I can’t get over the change with you two and I really like it! Thanks for sharing!! I hope that your mom is okay, Michael, and that there is ample opportunities to visit with her after they have developed an effective vaccine for this virus that will not be named. Question: Do you have any idea what has happened with Journey with Jono? He was cruising with the two ladies on their Narrowboat, they had teamed up and then he just disappeared. I am actually concerned (not that I am never concerned about people). Thanks for a great video!
Jono is about and occasionally tweeting, I think the issue for all of us is lockdown isn’t very vlogable. I’m sure he’ll come roaring back when we all get unstuck. Mom’s okay, just bored as we are. As for Brindley, I think it was diabetes that ultimately got him. Poor fellow. M
When were all the demolitions for the houses done? Recently? A real shame in my opinion ☹ but someone probably made lots of money... Hope your mom is doing well.
Sorry you couldn't get to Canada, but we've benefited from your lovely cruise on the Chesterfield Canal, which is new territory to me. And would you buy the converted pump house (large) or the small brick building with tall chimney, next to a pond, in the middle of a field? Hmm, not sure about that. Anyway none of us is having to make that choice!
Wow! Cruising! And you're not fretting about water. To be fair, it's the time warp having an effect again. It's really odd watching you, knowing that in but a few short days, you too will be restricted to repetitive water trips and I can't scoff. I am the world's worst water worrier when cruising. In fact, as an engineer, I am always a bit puzzled why the various tanks on board are never measured - only by dipping and that only the diesel tank. That would be one of the very minor specifications if I could have a boat built - Stainless steel water tanks, with a usable contents gauge. Stainless steel diesel tank - with a gauge - and even a 'You need a pump out' gauge on the waste tank. By the way, it seems you guys all watch each other's vlogs? So, did you see David's first 'Snooping in someone else's boat' vlog? A Fabulous boat, largely designed by themselves, a Greek couple, working with the EU in (I assume, Brussels) and owning a boat on the UK canals. It's not really a Hybrid as we understand, say, a Prius, because regenerative braking and so on, is not possible, but this boat had a huuuuuuge battery tank and an electric motor (and bow thruster too.) The figures he quoted for average use with the very large Solar array, were absolutely staggering. Days without running the engine. Check it out, Michael at least will love it. Nice vlog guys, pity we know how it ends.
We may one day see that twisted spire, even if we’ve got to use a bus to get there. Hopefully this all unlocks before the weed socks in enough that we’ve got to leave the end till later. I’ve not seen that CC video, will check it out! M
The Black Prince boats we hired in 2021 both had gauges on the water tank. And non-operational gauges on the pump-out toilets… Nothing on the diesel, but it’s unlikely you’ll go so far in 1-2 weeks that you’ll run out…
No problems with that chimney drawing in all weather. If you ever get to see inside, please take us along..
