KIRTON IN LINDSEY: North Lincolnshire Parish #22 of 56

  • Here we have a town, situated half on top, and half on the side of the ridge known of the Lincoln Cliff, and at times on this walk around the town, that ridge and its unforgiving slope certainly come into play. The B1398 Lincoln to Scunthorpe road passes through the town, as does the B1400 which runs down the Northern side of the ridge to Messingham as the road to Cleatham
    This is generally a maze of narrow, sometimes windy and sometimes footpathless streets, and every single one has something on it of interest. As a civil parish with town status, naturally this is one of the largest in terms of population in the district with well over 3,000 people. The name Kirton is an interesting one. It’s the “in Lindsey” part that’s intruiging.
    This area was historically part of the West Riding of the Parts of Lindsey. In Kelly's Directory of Lincolnshire, both the 1900 and 1913 versions list the parish as being in West Lindsey. However, West Lindsey’s boundaries would change and this area became part of North Lincolnshire in 1996. Its name stands as something of an historical testament to Lincolnshire’s old divisions
    It had something called a “Bridewell” - a slang term for a correctional institution. It was partially demolished and its stone was re-used in other buildings in the town. There’s an interesting bit of local folklore pertaining to Ash Well, and there’s loads to discuss at the former RAF base to the South which is where I was able to have a go on a flight simulator.
    There’s LOADS here…enjoy Kirton Lindsey - or if you will, KIRTON IN LINDSEY.

    Your last part of the video brought back memories for me as I only ever saw Kirkton in Lindsey from the air during a week in July when I was one of the lucky Air Cadets to qualify for my Glider Pilots license (signed by Prince Philip Dube of Edinburgh whom I met later in life when my son got his Gold DoE presented in Edinburgh) I was billet at RAF Hemswell for the week & we bussed through to the Airfield every day for training m& flying. I soloed during the lunch break on the Friday. The week started with a hailstorm & finished with a very warm but hazy Thursday/Friday. Glad to get to see the place again & also the village, Thanks (PS I'm from Scotland so it was a long way for a 16 year old to go back in 1965)

    Sempre em sonho vi a cidade de Londres, mas não a conheço, estes dias sonhei q tinha meus filhos nesta cidade, não tenho filhos e também nunca tinha vista falar nesta cidade, este nome aparece em um sonho , morro no Brasil 😅 pelo q eu pesquisei na Internet está cidade de kirton fica na Inglaterra. Nunca nem tinha ouvido falar nem em nome! Somente neste sonho q eu tive! Fiquei muito impressionada.

    Just watched you're video this brought back a lot of memories for me. my grand parents used to live in the cottage behind the vickerage of the B1398 S. Cliff road back in the 1950, before they moved to Gainsborough, had a uncle living on Scotter rd then Todd court Messingham, and I do belief I've still got a cousin living living in Barnard Meadow, I was also stationed at RAF Hemswell back in the 1960's so lots of memories thank you

    The TV and Electricals shop shown around the 17 minute mark is Knights CB Centre , visited several times late 80s early 90s when CB was a massive hobby. All the other stuff came in when CB use dropped but they still supply CBs and equipment for the die-hards. Only really visited this shop and the town square, didn't realise how big the town was.

    • @TheVillageIdiot
      @TheVillageIdiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep its massive! Are CB radios still a thing Dave?

    Great video and history, however you are slightly wrong about the monument at the top of Traingate. It has nothing to do with Ash well it celebrates all the men and ladies that ploughed the fields. Ash well it situated down the hill behind the cottage you showed.

    • @TheVillageIdiot
      @TheVillageIdiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sources told me Ash Well was on that triangle. Not me thats wrong

    • @TheVillageIdiot
      @TheVillageIdiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, listening back to what I say, I don't imply any connection between the statue and the well.
      If its only just behind that cottage it is still the right area so thats good enough for me
      I did wonder what that statue was about though, so good to know!

    • @kliivesmythe467
      @kliivesmythe467 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheVillageIdiot I would check my sources first pal. It's no where near that triangle regardless of the statue or not.
