    Thanks for the memories. I lived next to Barmby (Asselby) for 10 years and loved every cold, wet, hot and sweaty (thunderbug) moment. We have walked that riverbank many times with our long passed dogs. Now we walk the Tehachapi men’s with our Yankees dogs.

    Lookin' good, Capt'n. Wahl clippers, mirror and #2 (or #3) for beard, side & back and #8 - #6 for top. And patience. And a vacuum cleaner. All my wife or teenage kid need help me on is the neckline trim. I've missed the socialisation of the barber but saved time and money going DYI. I'm enjoying your adventure.
    My friend from my youth has just taken ownership of his brand new bespoke narrowboat in Sheffield and are starting their own adventure to take it 'home' to the Thames shortly. I am sooo envious of you, David (Cruising the Cut), and now him.

    • @MinimalList

    Cawood is pronounced Kay-Wood. I lived there, in the row of houses by the river until I was 3. My gran and Uncle still live there. Lovely village.
    Another great, and very interesting video. Good to see everything from another perspective. Thanks Guys!
    We must have missed you at Naburn by a couple of days. I was stood where you moored with my little lad watching the fish a couple of weeks ago. Ps. The Swan has an app, you can order and pay on, and will bring beer and food to you if required 😉
    If you need any shopping delivering to you, the offers there 👌 Must be difficult when you're rural, although you've probably stocked up now.

    Beautiful cruise on a great day! And Michael, I'm about 2 months ahead of you with the beard. For the first time in 30 years I have more hair on the top of my head than on my face. Feels weird. But my wife says she's OK with a ponytail as long as I maintain the goatee look. But it's too much maintenance.

  • @simontaylor4791
    @simontaylor4791 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great blog guys
    Selby council.bought the toll bridge off the previous owners and removed the tolls as it congested the whole town
    That's the first time I have been under the bridge at cawood been ove r many times seen flooding there well up the light posts on the wooden structures which is probably why those pontoons are a mess
    There was also a castle at cawood Cardinal Wolsey is reputed to have some connection with it
    .Naburn is lovely apart from the sewage works which used to absolutely stink my grandad used to light his pipe up to fill the car up with smell of tobacco that was better than the sewage. We once passed a car parked in the opposite gateway having a picnic

    Enjoyed the vid, brought back some great memories of when i used to waterski there. By the way, White Cross Ski Club is the one you passed with the really wide slipway just past Cawood Bridge. The pontoons you pointed out as being White Cross, are actually Naburn Grange Ski Club, or at least they were when i used to waterski there 30 years ago

    Your 'wave' is called a tidal-bore. The most famous being in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada from the Bay of Fundy, which has the world's highest tides.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, technically this one I was talking about is not a bore, it’s just the tide proper, the Goole does get an actual bore wave occasionally, known locally as an Aegir, but it only forms on particularly high tides. As bores go I’m not sure Moncton’s is as famous anymore, on sheer number of tourists, as the Qiantang Bore, which hits 9m and 40kph and is just nuts to watch. Here in England the Severn Bore is the largest and most famous, though it’s a trickle compared to the Chinese one. M

    I was going to alert you to your mispronounciation of Cawood but found I've been beaten to it. Thars int Yurksheer na, no longer in the posh sarf! Keep up the good work though.

    I was just wondering, did the beard clippings go in the Derwent? Some poor canal boat captain will be cleaning his prop and wondering what the heck he found 😀

      Ah, that would be a problem if any boats actually visited! ☹️

    Good thing Michael trimmed his beard, he might have woken race memories of marauding Vikings! Great video by the way.

    I agree with other comments. The trimmed beard makes you look younger. Probably cooler for the summer too. :-)
    Okay this is an edit...maybe not cooler.
    At the end of the outtakes I think you meant full Gandalf!

    Excellent and informative about an area I hardly know. Never moved so far north when I had my narrowboat, so I find this very interesting. By the way, who is the young man you're with Jo? (End of 'beard' comments - promise!)

    The trim looks good. I do mine at about 3 month intervals. Going to York? I would live to visit the National Railroad Museum there. It opens on Aug 4. Also, what is an estimate of the number of locks that you have gone through? You have had lots of ups and downs on this adventure. It has been enjoyable to join you on it. At 7:15 Jo said that the boat was heeling slightly. Might that also be described as "minimal list"?

      We prefer a more minimal list to that! Sadly all the museums in York were still closed in our return trip. We will have to go back at some point in the future.

    2 years on from this vlog, you wouldnt believe the amount of wood debris floating up and down the same tidal stretch, not the pleasant cruise that you had.
