  • My response to the questions set by Rob Walker for this year's vinyl tag - hope you enjoy.
PS need to make a correction - showed Kraftwerk's Autobahn as a 1975 album - in fact it was from 1974.

Pete - a great response video. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Your answer to Decade was inspired. I saw a photo of Grace Slick with Janice (in her fur hat) which I thought might make a good painting. All the best for 2024! My Tag video is still being edited. Cheers Bill

Hi Bill, thanks for that. I just had to have the best of the 60s along with the best of the 70s so had to go with 1966-75 😁. I think with Janis and Grace together the party may soon become absolute chaos! Look forward to your response. All the best for 2024...Pete

Pete, I’m very late to watching your response, knew it would be worth the wait. I’ve also never heard of that Manchester band, very interesting. Great dinner guests. I think a healthy dose of Southern Comfort would loosen your tongue. Keith Reid was a great loss. He also wrote lyrics for a number of their solo records. I had to go with the US, but on a different day it would be the UK. Thanks so much for the kind shoutout. . No one would ever want to revoke your VC membership, your channel is an essential view. Not too late to get more soul into your collection. I’d love to see you expand your series to Scandinavian prog bands maybe? Great response my friend. Cheers.

No need to apologise Jack, I'm way behind myself. If it wasn't for the prog element I very well may have gone for the US myself - I mean could I do without Dylan and The Dead! I really have to finish off the Krautrock series (only 2 maybe 3 left to do) before I can do another country, but I also need to be doing them more regularly otherwise I'd still be at it in another 20 years (especially as at the rate I keep adding stuff to the collection. Thanks and all the very best... Pete

Hello Pete! I’m Cosmic Brian. I don’t believe we’ve met but I m really enjoying your TAG video! I love your taste in music! We have common ground in the genres we listen to! Love that you chose Uriah Heep for 2 or more albums in a year! Also some really great 45’s Wow garage psych stuff looks incredible! Great set!
If you like psych and Prog stuff then funk is like the psych of soul music! Here are some bands to check out Brass Construction, Jimmy Castor Bunch, Funkadelic/Parliament, and BT Express.
This was awesome! Thanks for sharing! I subbed and look forward to perusing your other videos! ✨✌️👽✨

Hi Brian, than you for watching and for the kind words! I've just seen that you have your own channel which I'm ashamed to say I've not come across before. As you say we seem to have some significant crossovers in our musical tastes. I'm going to be checking out your channel later today - looking forward to it.
If you don't already know it then you really should check out Fruits de Mer - lots of great psych and prog.
I have been getting into funk more over recent years - though I have to admit I like it more when the rock element is there. I've got 4 early Funkadelic albums which I think are great. Parliament had less of the rock element so I never used to be as keen on them, but probably should revisit. I think I've heard of Brass Construction and BT Express, but not Jimmy Castor - will check them out. Do you know the Axiom Funk album Funkcronomicon which is a Bill Laswell project with people like Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell? If not check it out - great heavy funk and rock.
Thanks again, and I hope we'll be communicating again soon - all the best for 2024... Pete

An enjoyable Tag video Pete. Very Prog and Psych rich. I notice we both showed Abbey Road but to answer different questions. I'm also happy that your video was longer than mine. LOL I'd like to get my videos down to 15 minutes at the most going forward but never seem to make that happen. Happy New Year.

Thanks John. I've given up trying to keep my videos short - I thought restricting the number of records I showed would do that but they still came out at 24 minutes long! And it's not as if in my rambling I was saying anything insightful and worth listening to. All the best. . Pete

Great response Pete! I chose those two Coral albums too and like you I preferred the acoustic one, Holy Joe's Coral Island Medicine Show. I'd never heard Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura before, so gave the a listen. That's alot of heavy psych guitars duelling going on... reminds me of Black Angel's Death Song by the VU. Don't think my wife would appreciate it being played around the house, but I enjoyed it! Always liked Bob at Budokan too, its got a softer sound, but an enjoyable listen. The Japanese singer songwriter sounds very interesting, going to need to have a listen to that too. Really enjoyed the video and will be tuning in for more tips! Cheers, Jack

Hi Jack, just been checking out your response to the tag - and your very first VC video - excellent sir. If you'd like something abit less free-form and heavy from Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura then try their last album The Grand Celestial Purge - as I said more in the jamming 70's Dead vein - your wife may be able to handle that one a bit better. I know why some people have a problem with Dylan's Budokan album but I've always enjoyed it. From viewing your response I think you could very well like Hako Yamasaki - give her a try.
Thanks again for watching and commenting, and best of luck for 2024 and more VC videos... Pete

    Hi Pete.
Have been enjoying the 2024 Vinyl Tag responses and yours is naturally no exception.
Rick Wakeman is definitely a great raconteur and would make a brilliant dinner guest.
The cover on Steeleye’s Below The Salt is one of my favourites ever.
Believe it or not I don’t have a copy of Ziggy Stardust! It’s an excellent album, I used to own an original 70s copy and but I guess I regard it as one of those classic albums which is always readily available. Same goes for Dark Side of the Moon.
Your Kraut Rock videos are a great resource and I would definitely appreciate something similar with Italian of French music. I know it would involve a lot of work but...😊
From The Witchwood is wonderful. Strawbs don’t get enough mention in the VC.
Looking forward to more videos in 2024. Take care, John.

    • @soundsfromthewestcoast9939
      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi John, glad you enjoyed it. I know what you mean about not owning a copy of a classic album which is always readily available, and probably which you know so well anyway, My example of this is Rumours - I keep on meaning to get a copy, but there's always something less common that I end up buying instead. The Krautrock series really needs to be wrapped up, but I need to find a new video editor before I can do it.
Totally agree the Strawbs need to be shown more love here on the VC. I know though that some people have a problem with Dave Cousin's vocals.
Let's keep our fingers crossed for a good 2024 - all the best... Pete

Happy New Year! Fantastic response, Pete! It’s been a challenge for me to watch and create videos as well. Hoping to do more of both in this new year. I’ve seen Rick Wakeman as well and you are spot on about his story telling. I’m afraid the others at your dinner party may not get a word in though. As expected you’ve provided some interesting artists unfamiliar to me that I need to investigate. And yes I’m looking forward to the remainder of your krautrock series and am giving you a big thumbs up for expanding that to the Italian prog scene or whatever else you have in mind. This was enjoyable! I’m hoping to get a response in this weekend. I hope all is well on your end. Best wishes to you in 2024!

Hi Bill, good to hear from you. Life does have a knack of getting the way of you doing things you like doesn't it. I hope you'll find more time to view and get some videos out yourself in 2024. I think my dinner party would be total chaos, there'd only be Thompson to to keep some semblance of order. Once I can find a new video editor I hope to return to doing the rest of my Krautrock series. Looking forward to seeing your response to the tag. Take care, and all the very best for this year.

Hi Pete, I've seen your comment so know it's snap on the Coral albums - glad you decided to make the trip to HMV. I played the game on decade but have always thought of 66-75 as my favourite run of 10 years too. Not familiar with that Manchester band. Great call on '7 and 7 is' box (damn I should have thought of that!). Wow Grace and Janis together in their prime could be trouble...Nice Porcupine Tree, not seen that before. Nice tag, cheers Dale

Hi Dale, those Coral albums are really good, I'm going to have to delve back into their catalogue. I had decided to feature 7 FdM singles for this and 7x7 is was at the front so it seemed ideal for this exercise. Agree Grace and Janis could kick up a storm (not to mention Wakeman in his drinking days), but there's always Thompson there to try and ensure things don't go too out of hand. Cheers... Pete

Great response Pete and a happy new year to you. ( again).
I really must investigate Fruits De Mer, Dale at Gatefold33 talks about them a lot and they seem to release a lot of interesting records.
I always think i should enjoy Porcupine Tree but their stuff just doesn't hit the spot for me, strange as i like prog and psych.
I really enjoyed your Krautrock videos, they were really informative and introduced me to some great acts i wouldn't have hitherto explored.
I think Phaedra was one of the first TD albums i heard too, along with Rubycon ( my personal favourite) .
I note this video is clockibg in at alnost 40 mins, mine is nearly 45 and still uploading!!.

Hi Rob, I really think you'd find lots to like on FdM - sign up with them so you get the notifications (as they often sell out very quickly).
Which version of PT have you tried? I love their Delerium years - the early stuff is very psychedeilc, and then moves into a more Pink Floyd vein - wonderful stuff. Not keen overly keen on what they became after they left the label - first very Radiohead influence it seemed to me (not a fan of that band), and then got heavier. Try the early stuff if you haven't already, you might find that more to your taste.
Thanks for the kind words on my Krautrock videos, I really need to finish them off once I can find a new video editor that allows me to do subtitles.
Love those early Virgin period Tangs albums!
45 minutes! I feel better now. Mind you you can't have too much of a good thing. I take it it is still uploading as not seeing it yet - looking forward to it.

I had to stream that Hako Yamasaki right away, liked it a lot, very impressive as she was eighteen or something when debut was released, sounds really deep and personal. I decided to check them out and was blown away so had to get them. Love just about anything FdM put out - there's just so much love and care taken with their releases. The Manchester band was Desmadrados Soldados de Ventura (don't sound like an English band do they - don't know where the name comes from). Never seen anyone mention them but I enjoy their work.

Hi Pete, Lovely response. I particularly enjoyed your response to your favorite decade. I have drafted my responses, but had not thought of that legal interpretation. I best stick to perhaps the obvious decade for me. Interesting album that nobody will have. Your Krautrock videos are great. You would certainly have my vote for extending the series to other areas should you be so inclined. Take care, Richard

Hi Richard, thanks for watching. I had to go the way I did with the decade so as to avoid the punk era! I need to finish those Krautrock videos, but have to find a new video editor first - my current one was recently upgraded and now subtitling is part of the pro-version and hence has to be paid for. I would like to do a similar exercise with Italian and French prog and folk (and maybe even a Scandinavian one eventually?). Just watched your excellent take on the tag - will be commenting shortly. Some nice choices here. Always nice to see some Fairport and the Japanese singer songwriter will be added to my developing list of 'must hears' from that country. Exactly the same span of ten years that I picked! 😉
You're going to have to spell the name of that Manchester band for me! 😅
The original Budokan Dylan double album is one of my favourites of his.
I wonder if there's a digital version of that 7" singles box set? I hope so.
I'd swap Grace for Sandy, but otherwise I'm good with your choices.
Surely you have Maggot Brain, by Funkadelic? If not, go get a copy Immediately!
Those Japanese albums sound interesting. What's her name again?
I'd love you to extend the Krautrock series to other countries. How about some Turkish psych & folk-rock?
Voyage 34 is one case where I think the CD is better, as it isn't split over 2 sides, and yes, I much prefer the Delerium period of Porcupine Tree too.

If I had gone with a traditional decade then it would have been the 70s definitely.
I so wanted to pick Germany, but for the overall quality and range of styles it had to be the UK.
