    Hi Pete , for some reason missed some of this this extended series on your collection , so hours of viewing ahead ! And delighted to discover Kedama , if you have any other obscure organ / keys in this vein do let me know . I love the heavy organ German prog early stuff . Hope all well !

    Hi Pete. That set of 3" CDs is rather nice. It goes without saying that I've heard of none of the bands and artists. When I was a kid I was fascinated by the paranormal, UFOs and the unexplained. Unfortunately over the years I've seen an increasing connection between those who are interested in the unexplained and the more insideous world of conspiracy theories. It's not fun any more. I should probably stay away from social media. Cheers - Hedley

      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Hedley, those 3" CDs are enticing - I've just ordered an adaptor so I can play them. The acts are all pretty obscure. I'm the same as you with regard to all things unexplained. I used to subscribe to Fortean Times and loved their approach to such topics. But as you state the whole world of conspiracy theories that is around now is a particularly disturbing and potentially dangerous environment which I try and keep clear of (though it does seem to be becoming more a part of mainstream culture sadly). I do still enjoy picking up the odd copy of FT sometimes though. Cheers... Pete

    A fine bunch of esoteric discs from the great Dave B. Must get hold of that mythos issue of Occult Detective... I saw Richard show Filibuster Saloon and thought they sounded appealing (especially when he mentioned the Canterbury word.) Hope summer is working out well with you, despite the weather. 😂

      Hi John, I was very grateful to Dave for sending me these CDs - particularly looking forward to the Folklore of the Moon set. I think you'd probably enjoy the Filibuster saloon CD as you enjoy the whole Canterbury scene. Been an eventful couple of weeks, but no summer really to speak of! Take care... Pete

    Happy very belated birthday Pete! Great idea for a video. Did you hear the story of what happened to Jimmy Nichol after the Beatles? Bit of a tragic story, though not as tragic as Jim Gordon. Some great albums associated with June 3 for sure. Still looking for Lola Vs Powerman by The Kinks (along with a lot of their other records). Obscured By Clouds is a really good album, I have the reissue of that. I recently acquired that Byrds two-fer. Cheers, James

      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you very much James. I don't actually know what happened to Jimmy Nichol - do I want to? Gave up trying to find those mid period Kinks albums out in the wild and went with the reissues when they came out. The easiest albums of theirs to find are the later Arista ones. I feel that Obscured is very much underrated. The Byrds two-fer is great - my favourite Byrds album combined with my very first introduction to country rock. Cheers... Pete

    Hi Pete, How are you doing? I hope you are well. Bad Reputation was my entry point for Thin Lizzy. It is a solid album IMO, that showcases Phil Lynott's song writing skills wonderfully. It was one of my first hard rock albums and I can remember feeling intimidated by the title track as a young lad. I am quite sure that it is one of a handful of albums released in the late 70s that would be a huge influence on the NWBHM scene that developed from about 1979. That Vardis album looks interesting. I have their first one. I think it is fair to say that quite a few of those early metal bands let themselves down by poor vocals. It's almost as if the singing became secondary to the rest of the racket they were making in the studio. LOL I have a silly question Pete regarding Can. Do you have all their records? Cheers

    • @soundsfromthewestcoast9939
      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi John, how are you? Been meaning to get in touch for quite a while. This was the first time I'd heard Bad Reputation. I know it's highly thought of but for me doesn't match albums like Johnny The Fox and Jailbreak - I'm also a fan of the early Eric Bell albums. NWOBHM albums are difficult to collect - very rarely see any of them and they're usually expensive. I don't quite have all the Can albums on vinyl - I'm missing one! I don't have the reunion album Rite Time which to be honest was never a favourite. Do have it on CD but not listened to it in years. Will send you an email soon (honest)... cheers... Pete

      @@soundsfromthewestcoast9939 I like the Eric Bell Lizzy too, though I have still to hear the first two. I ask about Can because I have a brand new copy of Out Of Reach, still sealed. I bought it a few years ago in a sale. I have nothing else by them so I'm not sure what to expect. Maybe I'll spin it and see. Hope all is well with you. I'll put together an e-mail soon. Cheers

      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@johnbellamy3406 Hi John, Out of Reach is a contentious album among both the fans and the band. At that point they'd changed line-up adding a couple of new guys and going for a funkier, jazzier, and at times poppier sound - far less experimental than they had been. It's different but I still quite enjoy it.

I see they reformed in the 2000s and did a number of albums for Musea - wonder what they're like? Sorry at my age I struggle to recall what I had for dinner so can't remember in which video I showed the Caravela Escarlate album - it's an excellent one though. Will definitely have to check out the keyboardist's album. All the best... Pete

    Breton (and also part Jewish...) I really appreciate this choice/florilege. Diaouled Ar menez means the devils from the mountains, fantastic to dance on. Tri Martelod is anthemic in Brittany. Shame you could not also show dancing :( Youenn Gwernig (whom you do not mention) sings in English, Breton and French. He is fantastic. Ar Sonnerien Du means the drunken musicians (Du=black, and also means drunk. I love them, I saw them even more than Stivell or Tri Yann), and Gweltaz Ar Fur (shame he does not get a mention and neither does An Triskell). (and then I love Klezma and Yiddish music...and I sing Brecht or Jazz, but my sisters and I sing about 20 Tri Yann songs together in Kann ha diskan. ) You can also look up Tremma: th-cam.com/video/fQvseDO8rXw/w-d-xo.html lol I have all the Breton LPs (since I have all of Tri Yann, Stivell, Ar Sonnerien Du, Diaouled Ar Menez) you mentioned except Kouerien Sant-Yann whom I find boring. My brother is a big fan of La Ripaille (Ripaille=binge eating), la Bamboche (une bamboche is a sort of big fete, with alcohol...Faire la bamboche: going on a bender) and Malicorne. I had never heard of la Chiffonie. I like it. same with Emmanuelle Parrenin. For Youenn Gwernig th-cam.com/video/xg5m18lt3pg/w-d-xo.html There are also a lot of folk bands in Sweden Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

      Thank you ever so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciated the translation of the various band names. I love to hear acts sing in their native languages as opposed to English, but often would like an English translation to read along to. Though really the human voice is just a musical instrument too. I showed only those acts for which I have some music on vinyl. I bought most of them back in the 70s and 80s when French and especially Breton music thanks to people like Stivell made it popular here in the UK. They are not so easy to find nowadays. Therefore I thank you for the links to other like minded groups - I will definitely check them out. I'm always on the lookout for more folk acts from around Europe - especially Italy as I'm of Italian extraction - especially traditional songs and tunes when done utilising electric instruments alongside more traditional ones in a progressive manner. Wishing you all the best... Peter

    Hello Pete. Great video. I'm familiar with quite a few of those bands, but probably as many are new to me. I'm afraid the minute I sense a whiff of Prog, I'm out the door. I think I've got three of the Alan Stivell albums you showed. I believe his dad recreated/created the Breton harp, based less on historical evidence, and more on how he thought it worked. Well, it might not be fully authentic, but it sounds nice. I tend to prefer the more straight folky stuff. I've got a great album by a group called Rosbif, who draw folk tunes from all across France and further afield. One of my favourite albums from last year was by a group called Sourdurent, who have a modern take on folk music from the Auvergne and sing in the old Occitan language. It would probably be up your street. What about Lee Negresses Vertes? Maybe a bit of a fusion of world musics, but with a healthy dose of Frenchness. Cheers - Hedley

      Hi Hedley, thanks for watching and commenting. I hadn't heard (or don't remember) that story of Stivell's dad and the creation of the Breton harp - interesting. I've never come across Rosbif. Just checked Discogs and they did two albums in the early 80s. Can't seem to find any audio clips but they look like they'd definitely be up my street. Ditto Sourdent, though here I managed to find a video of them and very much liked what I heard. I need to delve further into Occitanian music. I first came across it with the Japanese psych band Acid Mothers Temple who did an album called Novia which incorporated the style into it. In fact when I saw them live they played a piece which I remember at the time thinking " this is pure French folk al la Stivell"! Les Negresses Vertes I have heard of but never investigated their music - maybe I should. Thanks for the suggestions... Pete PS don't run scared from prog... just open up your heart to it and you will never regret it 😁

    Thanks Pete for this large panorama of the french Folk. I particullary enjoy Malicorne,LA BAMBOCHE and Tri Yann and if you love that genre there is another historical band in the same way of Malicorne with Jean francois Dutertre where Emmanuelle Parrenin began Who's name is MELUSINE, I just know their first albums. In France according to the regions We have various identities more or less strong and if Bretagne is the most famous and well known with their singing in Breton; Others régions like Corse,west of France but more specially Occitania Have numbers of groups maybe more latin sounds and Pyrenean for Occitania. My favorite group is very well known in Occitania His name is NADAU(christmas on occitan gascon from Bearn) and they sing from 1973 Always acclaimed with a large public in all the feasts of villages but à few publicity in the national medias. They sing in Occitan and sometimes on French but for the last décades only on CD or K7 and none vinyl. I'm 66 soon and spend half time in Mountains of Pays Basque(Euskadi) where there is also a long tradition of Folk groups almost every village has a group rather singing in Basque( as the other part of Basque country part of Spain very Folk and all kinds of styles With historical protest songs singers for autonomia like Benito Lertxundi or Imanol or Oskorri) The most historical 70's ERROBI in part of France and ITOIZ part of Spain. on your video I discovered group YS I never heard about before. Always happy yo see your various styles videos Cheers

      Hi Gérard, thank you for watching, and for the very interesting comments and recommendations. It's fascinating to hear how distinctive the music and culture of the different regions of France are. I've been fairly well aware of Breton music because it was the one that was best known over here in the UK with Stivell and others. I first came across music from Occitania surprisingly from the Japanese psych / noise band Acid Mothers Temple who incorporated some of it in one of their albums, but I've not investigated further. Just looked up Nadau on discogs and they look interesting. I also checked out Errobi and Itoiz and they again sounded very good. But the one of your recommendations that really impressed me were Melusine. I have never heard of them before, but they sound absolutely up my street! I see that 3 of their albums are available on Discogs from UK sellers for reasonable prices - I think I may very well end up buying them. I love discovering folk music from around Europe. Being of Italian descent I would love to find more from Italy though. Wishing you all the very best... Pete

      I found part of the records you mentionned on your video finder keepers but unhappily not the italian the one I liked better Gerardo Iacoucchi. Maybe next time. It's not easy to find italian prog groups I discovered on your videos nor scandinavian and particulary finish groups I'm very fond of, because I never search and buy on Internet but only markets fairs or record stores. In Italia I have a favorite singer with a long carrer I follow from à long time Gino Paoli but his voice is very particular and don't please everybody he's most a singer songs than musical research. On your video I rediscovered too Focus I had one album but had forgotten I'm now finding Focus II but not easy find . See you soon on a next video.

    My first Stivell album was the UKedition of Chemens deTerre, under the title, From Celtic Roots. Dan ar Bras guested with Fairport at Cropredy one year, I remember walking up the field to answer a call of nature, snd being stopped in my tracks by his amazing guitar on a cover of the classic Beatles B-side, Rain. I've never come across Ar Korrigan, or Ar Skloferien... and quite a few others it seems. Gwendal I know well, I even have a bootleg of them. I'm going to have to dig out my Malicorne CDs! You have a ton of stuff I don't have, I'm going to have to work my way through the video again, very carefully, and take notes!

I used to be able to find these albums quite easily in Newcastle during my university days - nowadays, apart from the very odd Stivell album, I never see them knocking around. I have a DVD somewhere of a Stivell concert in Manchester in 2000 which I filmed which I need to find and rewatch. Cheers... Pete

    I just stumbled upon your channel, thanks for sharing this great references with us. I originally come from Alsace i.e., a French area with some strong regional identity just like Bretagne (Brittany), speaking of which these '72 concerts Alan Stivell gave at the Olympia allowed traditional Celtic/Breton music to become known on the national but also continental scene as well as it was a chance offered to the Bretons (many lived in Paris then) to rediscover their identity. This came in the wake of May 68 events in Paris also known for its slogans such as ''Free The Speech'', thus contributed to the resurgence and the revival of regional identities. Brilliant compilation, Cheers, FVA

Only familiar with Alan Stivell and Gwendal, so lots to discover and check out..i can't think i've ever seen a majority of these titles here in the UK. I particularly love Gwendal when they do that folk reggae fusion, i recall hearing that at a friends' house 40 odd years ago on a compilation of theirs and was blown away by it. Thanks for showing.

If you like Stivell and Gwendal then I think there's more there that would appeal - the Emmanuelle Parrenin album come immediately to mind. Gwendal at the time took me a little while to fully appreciate mainly because of the jazz elements (which I wasn't really into back then). Hi Pete, This was a very educational video, and a lot of interesting music. While the part of US I live in was once French and part of the Louisiana purchase and the state capitol has a French based name, any of this will have to be sourced from elsewhere. The only thing in my collection that is French and folk would be Wegferend, which I may have mentioned to you in the past. They are on Bandcamp. Perhaps our friends in French speaking Canada will have some of this that does not require overseas shipping. I miss many things about home, but must admit Eurovision is not one of them. I only have one artist in my collection that was involved. The vocalist (Jahn Teigen) in Norwegian Popol Vuh, later to be Popul Ace, had some entries after he went solo and changed his style. Great video. I have to circle back to the Audio article. Take care, Richard

      Hi Richard. Most of these albums I bought back in the 70s and early 80s when they seemed quite easy to find in the UK. The rest I picked up on Discogs over the last 10 years. I never see them out in the wild anymore so pleased to have got them when I did. I remember you mentioning Wegferend. I checked them out and liked them. I was trying to find their albums here in the Uk but with no luck - will just have to get them off bandcamp and pay the extra postage! I checked out Dan Ar Bras' entry to Eurovision - not a bad folk number with pipes - not the usual Eurovision pap. Speaking of which didn't Norway win the competition with a folk number too (Secret Garden is the name that springs to mind but I can't recall whether that is the song or the band) - if I remember rightly it was pretty good and mostly instrumental (which helps). All the very best... Pete

      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939 I just checked out the Secret Garden tune. I have heard it before, but did not realize it had been part of Eurovision and won. It's not a bad tune. I did not see it from my normal sources, but should have check out Canadian sources. Canadian shipping can still be surprisingly expensive though. Did you see Frøislie's announcement?
