Best (ie Favourite) Folk Bands of the British Isles

My response to the general thread that's doing the rounds about the best British bands. I've decided to restrict the choice purely to folk music (a favourite genre of mine). And when I say 'best' I of course mean 'my favourite' please bear that in mind (though my favourites are the best 😁).

    Hi Pete, great to see you and enjoyed the eclectic selection. That Capability Brown jacket looks like a weird variation on Hot Chocolate's Greatest Hits! I tend now to avoid buying any record over £20, and even that much puts me in a bad mood.😆 I guess at least when you've spent quite a bit on a particular record, you're going to be pre-disposed to enjoy it.

      Hi James, I think I know which Hot Chocolate album you're referring to but even that one was a lot better than the Capability Brown cover. The daft thing about spending that much on a single album (even if it is a double) is that I wouldn't think twice at spending the same amount on say 10 albums none of which match the quality of that album - never mind the quality feel the width! I probably should be more selective even if it means spending a bit more... but I just want to try so many... sad 😥.

    That Änglagård sounds great Pete, glad that you desided to pick it up. I have only one cd from the band, Hybris. I have bought just a few over 50 euros recs and have never regret those buys, I think neither will you. Leon Redbone one sounds like entertaining, I like those kind of deep vocals like Leonard Cohen and Fabrizio de Andre. Hope you find something cool also next week, cheapheat perhaps:) Cheers!

      Änglagård have been favourites of mine for 20+ years but never seen a vinyl copy of one of their albums. So despite my initial guilt at having spent so much on a single (well double actually) album I'm sure in the end I won't regret it. I too have a penchant for deep vocals - loved Leon Redbone's music for a long time - there's something about the authenticity of the performances that really appeals. All the best... Pete

    I listened to Moondawn years ago and loved it. I tried listening to another one shortly after I forget which, I found it a bit boring and didn’t have as much progression as Moondawn. I skimmed some other albums released before and after Moondawn and found the same issue. What album is closest to Moondawn, as in the two sides start slower and quieter and as the song goes in it sounds bigger and bigger. A recommendation would be appreciated. Thanks for the video.

    Hi Pete, I may need more sermons to kick the habit, though I fear them not effective. Many years back a good friend of mine gave me a singing Homer Simpson Santa with his own take on Christmas songs and one of them goes into using the phrase "pollywollydoodle all day". Now I know more about the origins.. I am fairly familiar with 3 of the 4 Audience albums, Friend Friends Friends being the exception. I think Lunch has good moments and there's a sound I like, but not quite up to the first one or House on the Hill as you note. I would have gotten it on vinyl from a used bin as well though. I have not dug into that VdGG album yet. It is so tempting to go to the early material. You have my complete sympathy, empathy and general understanding for the Änglagård purchase. I think the CD cost me enough. Both that and Annekdoten are great finds, but Prog på Svenska is an extra special find! Have fun next weekend! Take care, Richard

    • @soundsfromthewestcoast9939
      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Richard. It's going to be interesting listening to Lunch - the track I needle dropped is the first one on the album, but it is meant to be the best. Collect the early VDGG first - up to World Record if you haven't already done so. The latter stuff is still very good, but like you I tend to go to the early albums first. Never see vinyl copies of Änglagård and Anekdoten at the fairs normally so it was really a no-brainer to get them even at the price of the Änglagård (the Anekdoten was great value after the 25% discount. I don't know why Änglagård have never reissued their albums! All the best... Pete

  • @johnbellamy3406

    Hi Pete, The cover on that Wild Turkey album reminds me of the cover on the second Siouxsie And The Banshees album. Take a look to see what I mean. That couple on the Audience cover look like Hinge and Bracket. The needle drop you did sounds really good. It sounds like quite intense proto metal. I'd be interested to hear more about that Anekdoten album. I really like their first album, Vemod. I recently got the album released in 2007, A Time Of Day, but it almost sounds like a different band. That one you showed has their best reviews. I've been tempted to get it. Ohhhhh Wooow. Änglagård. Nice. You've just gained God like status Pete. I am so impressed. That has to be the find of the year. You lucky so and so you. And such a beautiful LP cover too. Why they don't reissue their albums I'll never understand... (jealous rant)..... Well done mate. That is absolutely superb. 👍

    • @soundsfromthewestcoast9939
      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi John, do you mean Join Hands with the 4 military figures on the cover? Would never have occurred to me as I'm not a Siouxsie fan. Hinge and Brackett - love it 😂. The needle drop was the first track and it does sound good, but it's meant to be the best on the album. The first two Anekdoten albums are superb, but as this one is so highly rated I'm really looking forward to giving it a spin. Not heard A Time of Day so can't comment on that one, but I have read that they went for a different sound with that one, more in a Radiohead vein, which wouldn't bode well for me as I'm not a Radiohead fan. I have never, ever seen an Änglagård vinyl album before anywhere so I just had to have it. Like you I don't understand why they have never reissued their albums - if Anekdoten can do it so can they! Would also love to see the Morte Macabre album out on vinyl too. Take care... Pete

    I've seen that Leon Redbone LP, but never really looked at the cover with the great Chuck Jones illustration. Is the cartoon "One Froggy Evening" (featuring that character) known in England? The Wild Turkey has a couple of brilliant songs in "Dulwich Fox" and "To the Stars." LOVE Audience's "Stand By the Door"; the rest of the album never stuck in my mind much. Did not know Gilgamesh's Another Fine Tune had been reissued. That has been on my want list for years.

    • @soundsfromthewestcoast9939

      You know I don't know why but it didn't click with me that it was a Chuck Jones illustration. I've just watched the cartoon - wonderful stuff, but I don't remember having seen it before. Looking forward to giving the Wild Turkey a spin. Stand By The Door seems to be the one that most people rate most highly from the Lunch album - have to see. I never see Gilgamesh albums out in the wild, so really pleased that they've been reissued - just need the archive album Arriving Twice to also get the vinyl reissue treatment too (though I doubt somehow that it'll happen) . Cheers... Pete

Nice record-fair haul though 😊 I thought I recognised Glen Cornick with his distinctive headband when you showed the Wild Turkey gatefold. I don't know that relatively recent VDGG album and I actually thought it was a CD only release. Talking of which, I have that second Gilgamesh album on CD, brilliant Canterbury material. Great to see your latest extravagant purchases, hoping you might do a book video soon. Take care, John.

      Hi John, I think it's too late for me now - I'm doomed to vinyl hell! The later VDGG albums are very good, but to be perfectly honest not up to the early ones up to 1976 for me. The Gilgamesh is a must - so glad it's been reissued as you never see original copies around. Don't think I'll be doing another book video, I've really stepped away from Book Tube to a large degree - though I have for quite a while thought of doing a music book video on here. All the best... Hi John, you're definitely making a great start with your Schulze collection. From the early period you should definitely add Picture Music and the two Body Love albums. But, for me, you're missing one of his greatest albums in 'X' - possibly my favourite of his. Check out the first live double too. I really like Audentity too - it's a more avant-garde at times album which not everyone is keen on. In Blue and Kontinuum are worth checking out too. And you should definitely try the first two Wahnfried albums Time Actor and Tonwelle - superb albums. To be honest you can't really go wrong with 90% of the albums he did!

    A huge achievement, showcasing a very impressive collection. I've not ventured beyond the early 80s with Tangerine Dream - did the electronic musical world catch up with them orveven overtake them?

    • @soundsfromthewestcoast9939
      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Post the mid 80's Tangerine Dream went down a more digital route using a lot of presets and the music became more mainstream and a lot less experimental - they even had a female sax player at one time. Though they did release so many albums in the 90s up to Froese's death that I've always thought that within there there is likely to be some decent music, it would just be a big job to seek it all out. However what I've heard (and bought) from the band post Edgar has definitely been a step back towards their earlier material and is quite good.

    Excellent! I was just telling my guitar instructor when he asked about what Krautrock is that he should check out your videos if he wants to dive in. I only have a touch of Tangerine Dream and the Wegmuller album out of this lot, and that obviously needs to change. Complex jazzy Canterbury Krautrock is a lovely combination of words. A bit of Karn Evil inspiration in the first Triumvirat album. My one dealer has a reissue of the Twenty Six still I believe, so might start with a pickup there. I actually got to see Bruce for the first time live on the Born To Run Tour in Boston. He started the tour in 1974 and it continued through March of 1977. I saw Queen for the first time live in 1977 at Boston Garden. Did you ever get to see any of the bands that you showed live? Excellent post Pete. You choose some great ones. Enjoyed it~ Rob/Boston

      Hi Rob, envious that you got to see both Bruce and Queen in the 70s. I've seen Bruce 3 time - once 2 nights in a row in Manchester, and the last time with the Sessions Band, and I've seen Queen twice - the last time at Maine Road stadium in 1986 supported by Status Quo. never got to see Led Zep, but I did see Page & Plant once , and Plant solo once. The artists I've seen most live of the ones I showed are Hawkwind and Richard Thompson both quite a lot of times (double figures). I only saw The Dead once (81) but have seen Bob Weir & ratdog 8 times I think (and Phil and Friends once). Of the rest... Steeleye 4 or 5, VDGG 3, Hillage 2, Dylan 2, Roy Harper 2, Neil Young 2, and TD, Gottsching, Hatfields, Zappa, Rainbow, Schulze, Floyd, Be Bop Deluxe, Tull, Ronnie Lane, PFM, Heldon, Purple and Stivell all once only.

      Happy new year to you too Mike. I have to admit I forgot about the Renaissance - it could very easily have been included in the prog 25. Ommadawn just missed the cut... but on another day? Wish You Were Here is in the Prog 25. Siren missed out too - I only like the early Roxy, and of them it would be my least favourite (not keen on the Avalon and later period). Face The Music - a good album, but again just missed out... 1975 was a pretty good year so quite a few albums had to be missed unfortunately 😥. You've got some good taste there with your top 5.
