  • If you’re a speed dip guy over the tradition wax method, give ZEP a shot. It’s $10 cheaper than Full Metal Jacket and Lowe’s carries it in stock so you don’t have to pay another $10 in shipping charges.

    I went and bought a 5 gallon jug of zep. Cheaper to buy that way and not by the gallon. Got everything dipped. Giving them a day or two to air out.

    My question is after cleaning off the new trap the grease and oil, do you rust up the trap before dipping it in full metal jacket or zep floor wax? Good video thank you.

    I used mop and glo last year with no problems, alot cheaper.
    What's your way on cleaning up traps after the season? I heard FMJ is really tuff to get off.

    I just posted a Part 1 video on my channel showing trap dipping in Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer. The Part 2 video will be ready soon and utilizes the Zep floor polish as a top coat. A few points for your viewers who will definitely want to know this. Keep reading.
    1) Per the OSHA Safety Data sheets, FMJ is classified as a floor polish. It has EXACTLY the same ingredients as are listed on the Zep OSHA Safety Data sheet, which is also a floor polish. For all intents and purposes they are exactly the same thing. Don't believe me? Google and read the data sheets yourself.
    2) If you are a Sam's Club member, their price on a gallon of the Zep is currently $11.98 and is normally in stock in any of their stores, so no shipping needed. FMJ is widely sold by trapping supply stores at about $26.95, or 125% higher price than the Zep, plus shipping is normally required. Remember, the products are the same.
    There is so much in hype in trapping that it is pitiful. Products that are readily available elsewhere at normal prices are often sold at extreme mark ups by trapping supply houses. Just because you buy a roll of wire or cable from a trapping supply house doesn't make it any better than if you buy the same wire or cable from a non-trapping vendor. Go to the trapping stores for genuine trapping products but don't pass up buying equivalent products from other vendors that do the exact same thing.
    3) The national ads for Lowes, as well as my local store, all price the gallon size of the Zep mentioned in this video at about $24.95, not the much lower price claimed in this video. Home Depot prices are comparable, making it nearly on par with FMJ in basic cost if you buy it somewhere other than Sam's Club. Again, Google the product on these store's websites and you will see what I am saying is true, at least as of January, 2019.

      Will it be difficult to remove or will boiling remove it ?

    • @TrehanCreekOutdoors
      @TrehanCreekOutdoors 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tim, I don't know yet. I have applied the Zep to all my traps and put them out on my line. I have made a number of catches with the traps and a few animals chewed on the traps pretty hard. They managed to chew both the wax and the Rustoleum off here and there in a few places. So I don't know how this type of treatment will hold up long term. But it is likely to last a full season, I would think.
      That said, the traps may need a fresh treatment next season. That might very well mean stripping off both the wax and the Rustoleum metal primer using some product or the other. I don't think boiling would do it but I honesty haven't tried that yet.
      However, since Zep is a floor wax I would expect it to come off pretty easily using Zep's floor wax stripper product. Getting the Rustoleum off might take some type of stripper that is made to remove that product.
      I've got the Part 2 video clips ready to assemble into a video and just need the time to put it together. Since this whole thing isn't a recommendation but is instead an experiment to see how this method holds up, once the season is over I will experiment some more to see what it takes to get the traps clear of these products so that regular trap dye and wax could be used for next season if this doesn't work out well.
      But so far, I am not unhappy with how the traps are holding up. They fire smoothly and are not rusting at all, which is the real reasons for this treatment. Other than animals chewing the finish off, I don't see any drawbacks yet.
      Thanks for your question. I appreciate your watching the video.

      @@TrehanCreekOutdoors thanks for the info. I also use Rustoluem. I hate traditional dye. I mix the paint with 50% acetone. Very happy w the results. Keep us updated on the longterm results of the Zep. I wonder how it would work on my conibears to keep them from rusting? How it would hold up w the traps being set in water? Sounds like a fun experiment!

      I hear your points on this stuff and agree it’s all the same stuff once u do some research. It’s good to know for when ur in a pinch or a time crunch to be able to conveniently get something that day. That said, I personally pay more and get it through the trappers supply places. I like to support ppl that support trapping and i am more happy with my purchase giving my money to a small time guy (trapper supply place) thats part of my tribe vs a place like lowes or something. Food for thought guys!

    What do you prefer as a dye prior to dipping them in this? Would it work ok after dying with black walnuts or ligwood crystals? After a catch do you redip them?

    • @biggstimetrapping9323
      @biggstimetrapping9323  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David. New traps I just boil to clean factory oils and they go straight in the floor wax. I dye all my traps the 2nd season in logwood dye. I do not redip after a catch. If I move to an entirely new property, I take all newly prepped traps with me though.

      Sometimes will put a nail in both sides of the offset. Most of the time we don’t even do that anymore because it’s such a small area to begin with. If we didn’t run offsets, we’d definitely add a nail before dipping.

    How long can you keep these products in the shed in the gallon container before it goes bad if at all. I just so happen to have zeps in the shed from the previous home owner not sure how long it’s been there. Is there anything to look for or smell for to tell if it’s bad?

    • @biggstimetrapping9323
      @biggstimetrapping9323  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dyeing isn’t necessary, but I would recommend it, except for when you’re running brand new traps. Sometimes it’s difficult to get new traps to “take” wax because they are free from rust. There are ways to encourage rust to coat new traps, but I’m not sure it’s worth it. If you do decide do dye your traps, you should do that before you dip them in ZEP or wax.

      Gary Sweatland - No sir. Just dip them in the ZEP (or FMJ if you prefer it). The ZEP is normally dry in 30 minutes. One coat will definitely work. I like to do it twice though, usually 12 hours apart.

      Hey Alex. Depends on the temp. If you can keep them in a 60 degree environment you shouldn’t have any issues. I have dipped in the evening and set them in the morning and had zero issues when allowing them to dry in my garage. If you can’t keep them at 60 or above for a while, I wouldn’t advise setting them. Tight chains!
