  • I decided it was time to remove the Zep Floor Polish from my coach. It has been over a year since I applied Zep to the exterior of my Coach. I felt as the temperatures were warming it was time I give the RV some much needed attention. After working with Zep Floor stripper on this project I came to some conclusions I feel need to be said as it relates to Floor Polish and RV exteriors! Watch and find out!

After you apply approximately 5 coats you need to do the following for maintenance follow up. Every year apply one additional coat of Zep floor polish. This will keep it from flaking like you experienced

I used to clean floors for a living and floor wax breaks down between 1 to 3 years. This is why the floors have to be completely stripped before you apply new wax. Furthermore, you did an incredible job stripping the wax off your coach!

Nathan&Shianne - I'm in agreement with you! I Zepped my RV about a year ago and it looked amazing! It was SO easy and I was VERY pleased. I started with the roof and at the recommendation of numerous TH-camrs and social medial posts, I ended up doing the whole coach. But after 6-8 months, I started to see small areas on the coach that appeared somewhat dirtier than the rest and they wouldn't wash clean. Fast forward to this past week, I needed to replace the old, cracked factory decals and as I removed them, the difference became blatantly obvious! The Zep wax had, as you mentioned, been collecting significant amounts of dirt and dust that was unnoticed until I removed the decals. My only option was to do what you did; I purchased the stripper and scrubbed the Zep Wax off and then buffed out the finish with a rotary buffer & compound then waxed. The job took me almost three full days and was extremely labor intensive. Now it looks new again! I definitely don't want to go through that again! So here's my take... Don't Zep it! Spend one day a year properly sealing it with a quality wax. There's a trade-off for everything, and this trade-off was not worth it!

Any vehicle that has decals removed is going to show a huge difference in the color that is under the decal. It is common sense that the decal has been protecting the color that is under it. That 100% is not the fault of Zep.

I cannot argue with your experience but it does not match mine. After a year of travel and exposure to the elements, I finally washed my Zep treated RV. It came perfectly clean with just a rinsing. It was the first time ever I did not have black streaking. With 10 minutes of spraying with a hose the RV looked like I had just waxed it .... with one exception. The nose of the RV was thoroughly splattered with dried on bugs. So I stripped and rewaxed the nose. Stripping was really easy and did not require a spray bottle or hand work. I dipped a sponge mop in dilute ammonia, applied to the RV and rinsed off the old wax. I just did the nose but I could have done the whole RV in less than 15 minutes. I will never go back to using rub on wax finishes. The Zep finish looks great and costs virtually nothing. I applied many coats to my RV, recoated the nose and still have 2/3rd of the bottle remaining. BTW, flaking of the Zep is highly likely to poor surface prep. A dilute ammonia strip is needed before using Zep to remove any old carnuba wax.

I appreciate your comment and will leave it for others to read! It's a very informative second opinion! I too, was very pleased after a year! My complaints came after I stripped the coach of the old floor polish.. one thing I'll note specifically, I didn't use a dilution of ammonia rather I used the Zep floor stripper.. which may have ammonia.. Your solution may be much stronger than mine! Also, your application of Zep could have been thinner and better applied making it easier to remove. We know that it hadn't been on as long mine had been.. so for those reasons it's possible you have gotten a different result. Again I'll leave your comment and my response as well. This is productive for the viewer! Thankyou!

It has been close to 2 years since I first applied the ZEP. At the end of last Summer I did wash the RV. Then I took a 4 month trip with lots of bug splatters, dust, and mud. I returned at the start of winter and did not even wash the RV. It still looks like it was freshly treated with ZEP. The shine is good, no signs of yellow or deterioration. I will give it a wash and probably apply an additional coat to boost the shine. I think that surface prep is the key. I started by hand scrubbing the entire RV with Bar Keepers Friend and a Scotch pad.

I even used and old credit card to scrape the polish off while using a spray bottle of the stripper at the same time. Spray and scrape. I stripped it 4 times total. It discolored some of my decals but not that bad. About 4 hours of elbow grease and it’s off. Good thing I only did 1/2 of my moty. Would’ve died doing the whole thing. Yes, I also made the mistake (IMO) of listening to RV U Tubers and applied the ZEP polish to my Class C. Looked great for under a year and now it's all blotchy. When I bought this big white rig, the previous owners allowed what I call "perma-grime" to attach itself to the bottom half. I used a cutting compound and buffer to remove it and it looked 150% better. But then I applied the wax and regret it. I just tried the same cutting compound but this time the results are inconsistent......so......looks like I'll have to remove it chemically like you did. Thanks for potentially sacrificing your finish to do this experiment.....hopefully will save me a lot a anguish in doing mine if it went wrong!!!

I use this on my boat and I find that multiple coats, up to 8, builds the film thickness to where the coating is more durable. I wash and reapply several maint. coats each spring and have been using the same base coating since 2012. When it finally does need to be removed due to age flaking etc, I find using the stripper full strength in a spray bottle and using a white scrub pad with a hose cleans it off very quickly and easily. For me, the acrylic lasts far longer than wax with much less maint. between yearly applications. I can fully strip a 32 foot cruiser in less than a day and reapply 10 coats in another day. It takes far longer to compound and wax and it doesn't last in salt water nearly as long as the acrylic. Also doesn't require much elbow grease effort as opposed to buffing.

I had a quite different experience with my coach. I'm wondering if it was the type of polish? I used the Zep Wet Look product. (Prep work was horrendous! LOL. My coach was a 12 year old, 1998 Newmar, badly oxidized. I spent 40 hours scrubbing the entire surface with Barkeepers Friend.)I applied five very thin coats of the Zep and got a finished product that looked showroom new. I did not experience a problem with dirt (or bugs) sticking to it. Dirt just rinsed off with a hose and bugs came off with a soapy rag. I sold the coach five years later and the finish looked as good as the day I applied it. No yellowing or bubbling off. I know there are several types of Zep floor polishes and as I said, perhaps we used a different product. My current coach is five years old and I'm contemplating Zepping it. After watching your video, now I'm hesitant.

Great post and I appreciate the positive feedback! I am certainly willing to assume user error on my part! I encourage a different opinion in the comments bc I want this to be an open contemplation of Zep’s use for the RV industry. I had a great experience for the first year plus. My negative view came after I cleared it off and seen the yellowing that had occurred that I didn’t notice until it was removed. I feel the yellowing/Greying was a result of microscopic penetration as well general dirt staining the Zep layer. Now, I will say if you get several years out of the Zep bf having to remove and replace the work or if by more washings you keep it looking flawless then it’s certainly a worthwhile endeavor! I just wonder how often folks apply it and sell off the old coach for a newer one without ever encountering the removal process. It’s a real job, and once it’s removed declares yellowing or no yellowing! And actually, I’ve worked way more off camera trying to remove the Zep and now more than a year later there’s still zep on my coach.. truth.. I still think it can be a worthwhile endeavor, But its a lesser of two evils thing, in my opinion! Regular polish can’t look that good that long..

The ZEP makes the color lighter by a bit, plus, even though I put on 5 coats of ZEP, it won't shine like the other, non-ZEP side. It's shiny, yes, but not like the original finish.
So when I removed a portion of the ZEP, I immediately noticed the base color of the RV is darker. Apparently, ZEP gives things a whitish color cast. Not surprising, since the polish is white when you apply it. I guess 5 coats makes it lighter with each coat. It really shows up though on my brown color RV.

Thank You! I've been looking for someone who explains what happens down the road with the Zep. I bought a bottle a few months ago and was still undecided as to whether to use it or not. I did wash the 16 year old coach and removed all of the oxidation and it looked quite good. My question with the Zep was what do you do with it as it ages. Take it off, and then put it back on again? I don't think so. I think a good polish wax will do just fine.

This is true! Zep isn't user friendly. It appears to be but living with it on your Rv for an extended period of time proves otherwise. As with everything, it has its up sides and down sides.. but ultimately it's more work and less clean.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on these Zep products. As a new sales rep for the company I have been doing lots of research on customer feedback. Reading the title of this video I was nervous/shocked thinking that a Zep product either did not work or ruined your coach but I actually got a different message (correct me if I am wrong) - the Zep Floor Polish worked well for a long period of time but was tricky to remove when you no longer wanted it on your coach. In your opinion, would Zep Floor Polish be an excellent product if your removal process was easier? if used for flooring (with no plans in the future to remove for any reason)? Thank you for helping me to become an expert in my new position!

Thankyou for reaching out, I suppose my most important question would be, “is the product porous?”. I can’t speak for it’s true and intended application “flooring”, Yet for a while, the market turned to the product for exterior Rv applications. There was a natural angst for folks using waxes that didn’t last. Your product will last but it’s not really intended for Rv exteriors. I think most in the Rv industry have moved on to ceramic coatings as it is intended for automotive exteriors. My review is based on the product for a non intended use. Which practically nullifies any real worl review for its real purpose. I’d like to know if it’s porous for confirmation of an assumption that it created a layer of dirt and grime that imbedded itself in the Zep layer I had put on the Rv. The last thing I’d ask is, do you all sell automotive/Rv specific products and are you all producing ceramic products I could use and review? If so you could send them my way and I’ll do a video and review of those products. Thankyou and have a blessed day.

Leanne: If you would, please contact the chemists and inquire about adding a UV inhibitor/blocker specifically for RV use. If you do, I feel the new polish would fly off the shelves with proper introductions.
I maintain this polish on my RV and have no issues with it. It’s the ONLY thing that works on old tired sun worn RV surfaces short of a full repaint.

Interesting take on the ZEP/RV conversation, thanks. Did you use the ZEP Commercial Floor Sealer before applying the wax? There are threads that suggest the sealer "fill in" the porous areas of the fiberglass. In fact, there is a 4 step ZEP process, but I am wary of putting anything on the RV that might tear it up. My apologies if this is covered in another video.

    • @nathanshiannetinsley5723
      @nathanshiannetinsley5723  6 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm not sure of the sealer.. I would personally think it to be an option to seal the polish. In that instance the floor polish would be less susceptible to grit and greying? Interesting thought.. but honestly the removal is such a pain, I'd never suggest Zep floor Polish again for an rv.. it takes the smooth finish off of the coach and it sorta looks like an extremely poor hard lacquer job. It's almost impossible to have a smooth surface using Zep. And after all my work to remove it.. there's still places on the Rv that aren't completely clean.. hmm looks like I could do another video..

My conundrum is that the cleaner/wax i use does not render nearly the shine that the Zep gives. Secondly, no one has a true understanding of the products positives and negatives until they’ve applied it and then removed it.. you just can’t know what has really happened with the layer of Zep until you remove it and see if it yellowed or greyed over time, it can fool you

    • @lishayost144

I don't think he would do all that work to remove the ZEP for views. I can see how something made for indoor floors would not have UV protection, and that is probably the number one problem with using ZEP on an RV. Someone mentioned in the comments about using a UV protectant layer after putting on a bunch of coats of ZEP. Adding the UV protection would probably make using ZEP worth it. But then you'd probably just have to keep adding another coat of the UV protectant each year to keep it good. I think with everything, there is just going to be maintenance, no matter what you choose. I don't have an RV, but I'm planning on using rejex as needed on my ram promaster camper van.

There’s several reasons why I wouldn’t take down any of my videos dealing with Zep Floor polish.. after-all, it’s an experience that I went through that others can follow. Many may come to my conclusions or they may have different experiences. If you read other comments you will find I keep the conversation open for those who still enjoy their Zep. The beauty of TH-cam is you share your life as it happens and after about 7 months I was still very happy with the product. However, in about a year and a half, I learned some things I shared with my audience on why I wouldn’t use Zep again.. I have even more videos detailing what I did in Zep’s place.. These videos taken together paint a picture of the path Zep led me down.. my conclusion being.. it’s a great product for floors, not Rv’s and you can see why over time I would come to that conclusion with the videos. People learn that it looks good when initially applied and even looks good 7 months later.. but you find out, a person who had tried and experienced Zep and recommended it eventually came to loathe it! I hope this helps you! I’ve got a good friend who seen at least a couple of my videos (good and bad) and decided he’d still give it a try.. he even sent me photos.. I gave him advice on proper application! But I personally (have been there and done that) and for many reasons would never put it on my RV again!

I did this job and it was extremely labor intensive. It took me three days to remove the Zep and then finish it properly (two days for stripping and one to buff & wax). After the Zep was removed, I used a high speed rotary buffer with a product called Menzerna - 1000 grit. This by itself brought my shine back to its original luster, but living in a Florida Coastal area, I also sealed it with an ocean polymer! It looks as good as new (if not better)! I'd rather give my rig a quick buffing once a year than to ever go through the Zep hassle again!
