2008 Honda Civic No Crank No Start With Resolution Shows starter relay and more

  • I had a problem with my starter and a bad test result from an auto parts store that forced me to check the starter system of the car. Here I show how to check the starter relay, ignition switch and trace the wires in the car plus the test the starter yourself if necessary.

      My sister just drove her 08 civic coupe 9 hours from San Antonio Texas to north Mississippi hers does this and I have referred her to the standard brand of relays for replacement from. eBay avoid the stealership her civic has only a little over 100,000 K miles and it’s a stick not a automatic 😂

    Hey man, I’m having trouble with my 07Si and I think it’s the ignition switch. What happened to me is that the turning the key to II will turn on dash light but when attempting to start, it would shut off (all of it: dash light, door light, hazard, everything etc) do you think it’s the ignition or alternator?

    • @goddom
      @goddom  ปีที่แล้ว

      Alternator would mean your battery is dead. You can get your battery tested at a part store, but you have to make sure its charged up first. Your symptoms could be an ignition switch if it does this same thing multiple times in a row.

I spent 600$ on a starter replacement at a shop only to find out the problem was actually just a sensor called the clutch safety switch(makes sure your clutch is pressed in before car will start) please nobody make the mistake I made of buying a starter without verifying all other possibilities I am down a bunch of money when all I needed was a 20$ sensor I could have installed myself.

    • @goddom

      I don't think so, the alternator charges the battery, and if your battery isn't charging or id dying all the time, then it might be the alternator. No, but that's a pretty common symptom of the starter dying. Mine just didn't work one day. If your battery seems strong, and the wires to the starter seem like they are in good shape, its probably the starter. You can try replacing the relay and see if that helps, but relays tend to outlive starters.

      Hmmm, if I am reading this right, you try and start it, and nothing happens - it doesn't crank. Then you try again and it does crank. I am assuming all the lights on the dash come on? I think its the starter, but if I were you, just to be safe, check the ignition switch. In the video I show you how to check the wire that is coming into the engine bay in front of the driver. I would check it there real quick. If you get 12v at that wire when the key is in teh "start" position then the ignition switch, and relay are all good. I hope this helps!

    • @goddom
      @goddom  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its on the back side of the engine tucked up under the intake manifold. There are two wire clips that need to be unclipped. Then two bolts, one on bottom, and one on top. Once those are undone, you can pull the starter out a little, unclip the solenoid wire then unbolt the positive power wire. There are a few videos that show this. I used this one: th-cam.com/video/ChurcA2Ymjs/w-d-xo.html
      And this one: th-cam.com/video/edOFAzqowds/w-d-xo.html

      Oh and there is a bracket under the intake that needs to be removed. I removed the exhaust pipe as shown in the second video link and it helped a lot.

    Thank you for posting, the same thing happened to my 2009 civic. I did 6 battery, alternator, and starter diagnostic test at autozone and advance auto parts over the the last couple week I noticed the problem. All diagnostic tests came back normal. I went with my gut feeling, I replaced the starter, and it starts better than new!

    Great video. I have a 2009 CR-V that I just bought for my 16 year old daughter. Same problem you described but I haven't solved it yet. I bought a new starter but when I pulled the old one, I noticed that it is brand new. So, I had O'Reilly's Auto Parts test the starter and they said it was good. I reinstalled it. The battery is good , full charge, I replaced the cabin starter cutout relay just because and I replaced the ignition switch just because. I checked the immobilizer and it is good. When I turn the key, I do here the cabin relay click, but nothing else. I did look at the fusible links and they are all fine. Is the starter really bad?

    • @goddom
      @goddom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems like it. The last check is to make sure the wire going to the starter is seeing power, but I would probably bench test it with jumpers like I did in the video to be sure. But be very careful if you do that.

    So, if I’m getting continuity at the red wire, it’s narrowed down to the starter or battery? Battery tested good. No start is intermittent, hot or cold, nothing on key turn, no clicking or anything. Try it a couple times, then usually it will fire right up.

    • @goddom
      @goddom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct, and it's likely your starter that's dead.

    • @racer89gt
      @racer89gt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Eddy I’m at such a loss. Replaced starter, same problem. Got a brand new battery and it worked great for a few days, but the problem has resurfaced. I also cleaned the positive and negative terminals and grounds, with no change. This issue is driving me crazy. It seems to no-start worse when it’s cold outside, 30* F for example. What happens is first couple tries you get NOTHING. Then the next few tries you get the click/buzz from under the dash, but nothing from the starter. Then finally it will randomly fire off the starter and start like nothing is wrong.

    • @goddom
      @goddom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@racer89gt To me, the click-buzz sounds like an issue with the relay or the ignition switch. You might have a bad connection in there that is intermittent. I don't either of them as super expensive you might want to try changing out whichever is cheapest first. I hate suggesting just replacing things until its fixed, but this might be hard to diagnose with with just a multimeter.

    • @racer89gt
      @racer89gt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Eddy yeah that’s why this is puzzling. I put in a new ignition switch and had the exact same problem. Put the factory one back in. Are there any relays other than the one under the dash I should look at?
