    Updated: Replaced my MAP sensor. That did it. Problem fixed.
    Hello SMA and anyone with insight, I have a crank and no start issue. I saw your other video on the Civic that had a broken Timing Belt. My '05 Pilot doesn't make that noise when I crank.
    It all started when I had a p0172 and p0458, no EGR codes. I checked and replaced my spark plugs, the EVAP solenoid valve (Honda OEM) and cranked, no start.
    I checked my coils with a volt meter and they all have resistance. To eliminate an issue with ignition, I sprayed starter fluid in the Throttle and it wanted to start. So that led me to believe it was a fuel issue.
    I checked all the fuses with a tester related to the ignition and fuel injection. They're ok. I even replaced them.
    My fuel pump does come on. i checked my fuel pressure with a gauge, and I have 50psi. I did notice my fuel gauge on the cluster fluctuate as I crank so I'm not sure if it's the Fuel Pump Relay, the Fuel Pump itself or the EGR. It's kinda hard to work in thw cold and rain on the side walk. Wished I parked in my driveway car port...ty for any help.

    Thank you so much, Eric. For doing this video. I happen to replace the camshaft seal and the EGR gasket. Due to an oil leak. After I was done the car ran normally for 15-20 minutes. Then it began to have the same problems as that Civic you worked on in this video. So I pull out that, EGR Valve and clean it as you did. Afterward, the car started normally and did the same procedures as you did. By removing the FI-ECU fuse. The car started normally again. Took it around the neighborhood then it almost died again at the first two stop signs. Once I got home I turn it off and on several times. It started normally. By then It was already Midnight. Tomorrow I am going to drive it around the neighborhood again to see how it behaves. Anyway, once again thank you so much. I was lucky to find this video. It sure cut down my stress level by a ton.

    Honda EGR valve lift sensor voltage should not exceed 1.25V at idle. Anything higher and the valve is considered stuck open. I had one a few years ago with a chunk of carbon like that. Doesn't happen too often, good work!

    After working at a car stereo/alarm shop, I take anything, of any value, out of my vehicle, before taking it into any shop. I saw many of our ‘techs’ (I use that term loosely) steal just about everything out of cars. Money, candy, CD’s, cigarettes, tools, drugs, credit cards, etc.
    One day, a cop brought his personal car in, to be worked on. For some stupid reason, he left a pistol under the front seat. One of our techs stole all of the bullets out of it. I can just imagine his surprise, when it went “click” instead of “bang”.
    Another time, one of our techs stole a one quart container of mercury, out of the trunk of a customer’s car. He walked around the shop, office and showroom, pouring it out, because it “looked really cool, when it hit the floor”. We all got three days off, without pay, while the owner had a hazmat company decontaminate the building.
    I know that mechanics are probably a more trustworthy bunch, but I have no more trust after seeing those customer’s cars being pillaged.

    I was still at fuel, spark, timing, mechanical, when you had already made the leap to EGR simply based on the presentation. We all thought, how'd he know that? Was it the intermittent, terrible running, responds to throttle presentation that made you think of it? Now I've got EGR on the brain, it won't get out of my head for weeks. Great video.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just go open the EGR on your car and see how it runs. MAP engines have a pretty distinct way of running with an open EGR.

    On older cars with bypass air, a crank, no start, follow by a crank start WITH accelerator pedal applied and a poor idle is typical of a stuck closed bypass valve. This would result in very high cranking vacuum.
    Most cars these days use electronic throttle control which eliminates the bypass valve.

    If it is out, and fixed, maybe a cleaning of the built up carbon on the inside of the assembly ?
    It's maybe a 20 minute job.
    Make sure it will not happen again in the near future.

    • @coollasice4175
      @coollasice4175 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was thinking the same thing. The EGR valve had a lot of bolt heads showing, so maybe it could be taken apart and cleaned. Even the pintle valve had a 6 point recess for a drive to remove.

    • @uzaiyaro
      @uzaiyaro 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally, I wouldn’t muck around disassembling stuff if it still works. Wait till it dies, or find a dead one, pull that apart, and see if there’s anything you need to watch out for. Unless it’s very cheap, then you might as well just smash a new one in anyway, and make sure the problem doesn’t come back.
      I’m probably being overly cautious here, personally, I love tearing shit apart, there are few things I love more in life than pulling stuff apart and finding out how it works. But it would suck to fix something dumb like this, only to think ‘hey, I might be nice and tear it down, clean it out properly’ only to break something in the process.
      Believe me, I know the temptation, but try to resist it, unless the thing is just grossly dirty and clogged anyway. And in that case, you’ve probably got bigger fish to fry. This just looks like standard carbon build up from a well running engine. It’s not always worth cleaning out every last bit, especially if the part still works.
      I’m not a professional mechanic, I’m only a home gamer, but I would be careful about this sort of stuff. As tempting as it may be to nip other stuff up and be a good mechanic for your customer, some customers cannot be reasoned with, and will throw a fit if you do something they didn’t ask for, even if you’re not charging for it, and even if it needed doing. Fix what you are asked to fix, and precisely no more, or less. By all means ask the customer if you see something, and by all means don’t charge for it, but don’t think you’re doing the right thing by ‘surprising’ them.
      I know, it’s stupid, but this is how the public is. Personally I’d be chuffed if my mechanic took initiative and nipped other stuff up. Other people decidedly are not, because they know best, even if their engine is full of sludge. Seems they forget ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ does not mean ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t maintain’.
      I could be full of shit, though. But this is how I’d swing it if I ever were a professional. Not that I’m smart enough for any of that, though.

    On 90s Toyotas, there's a vacuum solenoid that pulls on the EGR. This solenoid is known to go bad, and can easily be tested with a hand vacuum pump. My 95 Corolla was throwing an OBD1 code for EGR failure, so I thought I needed a new EGR,valve. But when I looked up the EGR test in the Toyota service manual, I realized that it was actually my EGR actuator solenoid valve. Much cheaper fix.
    Something also common on 90s Toyotas, at least Corollas and Previas, is that the intake passages clog with carbon and cause EGR flow to be "insufficient" and throws its own separate code. I cleaned my intake manifold in addition to the EGR actuator and don't have any codes anymore! Had I not cleaned the intake passages, I am certain I would've been faced with an insufficient flow code.
    On my 1995 Previa, it is throwing me an insufficient flow code. Its EGR works exactly like the Corolla's, so I performed the EGR tests and confirmed that I need to clean out the intake manifold

    Never had this before: I just got a crank no start on an 05 Legacy 2.5. Pulled small timing cover and saw the that the belt wasn't moving while cranking and the accessory belts weren't turning. Pulled the entire cover off and the timing notches were all frayed off at the crank....weird, I thought. Tensioner was weeping a bit, but no bearings/idlers were bad and the belt had less than 20k on it. Leak down test on passenger checked out while on the driver's side it showed a leak on cylinder 4 (towards the firewall). Pulled the driver's head and started replacing the valve until I noticed that the camshaft was having a real hard time turning over even though all the lifters were removed. Went deeper and pulled the cam to find the culprit: oil starvation to a couple of the mating surfaces almost seized the camshaft. The weakest link was the belt after trying to turn the non-lubricated cam. Solution: grab a head from a core I had lying around (2001), drill out and tap an EGR hole. Running like a champ! Tell wife and her reply was "Greeeaaaat....remember that tomorrow you're watching the kids so I can see 'Beauty and the Beast' with my sister."

I removed the carbon and cleaned it as best I could scraping with a screwdriver, reinstalled the valve and it jammed again a few miles later. I soda blasted the inside of the valve chamber because it was coated with a layer of carbon (I had to prop the valve open). Been fine ever since.

    To extend on your Honda radio code knowledge, most of the time you can find the code for the radio (and the GPS code if applicable) on a little white sticker somewhere on the car. Usually it is stuck on the sidewall of the glovebox either on the inside or outside (I've seen it on both). Another spot would be on the inside of the fuse panel lid under the hood. You're welcome :)

    Hey Eric O,
    I used a trick that you demonstrated on a video a while back. A Jeep that I was working on had a tie rod ball joint stud that was spinning with the nut. I put a box wrench on the nut and my impact on the 10 mm stud and reversed the direction. Worked like a charm and spun right off! Saved me a ton of time and energy! Thanks much

    I love what you do and the way you do it. You remind me of the way I do things in my shop. The same conclusions in a very similar way. Before I started watching your videos, I was planning to retire. It's been put on hold.

    sounds like Eric o needs to invest in a starter button, on some cars it's really hard to get to the starter but a lot of cars it's worth it to go to the starter or just the relay. to be able to crank a moter or just bump it over, but then we wouldn't be able to say hello to you're awesome wife. I love that you include her in you're videos. because behind every successful man is a good woman,

    I totally forgot about the EGR valve. when that was suggested by Eric O, I immediately agreed, since I had an EGR problem with my toyota and it displayed similar symptoms. great vid.

    My daughters Chevy equanx ran like crap with a bad egr valve. I couldnt believe it was doing what it was doing as far as bad running and set a code. We scanned it,found the issue,replaced it and back to the road again. I have cleaned the one in my Trailblazer,no issues.

    Need to having a 2005 Honda Civic ex special edition 1.7l . I replaced head gasket and water pump and timing belt and gaskets myself. After setting timing and valve gap I have crank no start. Fist crank it started for 3-5 seconds and died and never restarted. I never had any trouble before doing this work with the car just coolant overflow would come out and overheat the engine and I would park it. It doesn’t have a reall good compression but I think it never did but use to run ok. My question is after checking I had fuel spark and new cam sensor and rechecked timing and valve gap after no start it was all ok but no start. Your video shows using a vacuum gauge after the purge solenoid and you have 2 1/2 inches and I checked mine and I have zero. What am I missing? What could make my car not have any reading on gauge when cranking? Any suggestions would help and I appreciate your videos. Thanks

    A good none scan tool diag can be done with cold eng, start vehicle (assistant is necessary) and feel the egr pipe close to the intake. If it gets hot right away, there's egr flow and there shouldn't be. Stays cold...no flow.

    Hey Eric I’m looking to buy a little Honda CRV from about 1998 to 2004 because I like the older ones better because of less computer crap. Everything I’ve look at is anywhere from 69000 miles to 250.000 miles with either 4wheel to two wheel drive. What is the most common problem with them or what should I look for so as not to buy. Thanks for any info. Wayne
