Before he passed, I was lucky enough to meet James Hampton at a convention and talk about this episode. He said the Zone trooper car was the same one used in the Logan's Run tv show

I never will forget my appendix almost ruptured in 1985, and I watched this show every night while I was in the hospital for a week. So happy to see it again! I thought it had "Land of the Lost" vibes...

😊😊An online article has noted that the fourth episode Rock and Roll Suicide (1985) is the reason this show may never be on DVD or Blu Ray because of the songwriting royalties from bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones (and Bad Company and David Bowie as well), which are sung by Sterling family in this episode.

Yes, every so often for the past 40 years, I've thought about the scene in the supermarket where they have "Meat" and "Good Food." I don't know why that always stuck in my mind, but that scene is what made me finally search for the show! I find it pretty amazing that other commenters are saying the same thing about the supermarket scene - for some reason, it really stuck in our heads when we were kids.

This series could do well with a proper reboot, but make it something like limited run series with 10 or 12 one hour episodes where there is an overall begining middle and end story arc. Trouble with sci-fi series back in the 80's and 90's was the writers and producers had the green light to make a series but no idea how it would go or even an overall plot synopsis. It was just make a series and see how far you can take it. Some were lucky and we got a full story arc - begining, middle, and end. Others got canceled due to bad ratings before they even got a chance to get off the ground. Always pissed me off that some series I invested myself in never got the chance to come to a satisfying close. Otherworld was one of them.

All I remember from this show as a child was the pyramid with the eye. From that memory alone I was able to find the series, watch it and enjoy. It is too bad it was cancelled after 8 episodes, so much like Sam Beckett jumping through time, this poor family is stuck fleeing zone troopers jumping from province to province forever, that is unless someone can reboot it and stream it somewhere.

No... it was canceled mid-season. Probably expensive to produce and the ratings just weren't there. Probably a little too "far out" for most people.
Star Trek would have suffered the same fate had it not been for Gene Roddenberry whipping the fans into a fury toward the end of the first and second seasons and basically "forcing" it to be renewed... both the studio (Desilu and then Paramount after Gulf+ Western bought them out) and NBC were losing money on Star Trek when the original series was on the air... Mostly due to the high production cost and low ratings...

The society of THEL is very similar to the HUNGER GAMES world that came 3 decades later.
After UNIFICATION wars , a Capital District Imar ruling over 77 Provinces (13 Districts in HG) with Forbidden Zones between the provinces patrolled by Zone Troopers(Peace Keepers in HG). Each Province was centered around a particular Industry/Agricultural product/Energy/Resource/ect.
I wonder if it had gone on longer than just 8 episode they would have had some type of battle to the death between provinces with the winners getting a trip to Imar and seats on a ruling Council?
It would be a great idea to reboot this series considering the popularity of the Hunger Games movies. Maybe it was just ahead of its time.

It is sad that what the show writters wanted to do was 'too risky' for primetimr TV at the time. So I can honestly say this is a show that I would love to seena reboot of. With today's special effects and the 'walls of what is appropriate' have been obliterated, this concept could be very entertaining.

The music is definitely Sylvester Levay... sounds very much like the Airwolf theme, some of the same thematic elements-- the long held notes that warble down into an almost staccato tone, and the structure of the theme overall... I like it. Not as much as I liked the music in Airwolf, but still... it's easy to see they were scored at about the same time...

The dad doesn't go back and get his wallet out of the desert in the 'other world.' It's kind of like characters in movies leaving the door open.

The actress who played Nova gets no mention in the credits... odd considering how many lines she had.

In the late 70s those generics were a brand new thing. Packaging like that was popping up all over the place. It was a strange time.
