One of my all time favorite British SF show from the 80's! I first saw it on PBS in NYC in 1990--immediately fell in love with the setting and characters. Made by the same writer/creator of Blakes& and the evil robots in Doctor Who! Would love a remake some day.

Not perfect, but surprisingly decent zee-gee effects for the era and the budget. Interesting directorial choice to have the two opening crimes parallel each other so closely and ultimately be unconnected. Rather artsy, that. Also nice to a British character so open about how little there is to choose from between corporate USA and the (remarkably) still-extant USSR. Good reminder of how disgusted many folks in the UK were with the US after 7 years of Reagan's policies.
I wonder how long it will be before the US collapses under its own socio-political divisiveness and make this feel even more dated than having the USSR around? We might make it through 2024, but I wouldn't bet money on us getting to the point where the world has international star cops.

This was a great Cop Show haha. Oh yeah it also sort of was a scifi series too.
Thank you for casting it here. The special effects were great for their time but it wasn't about that.
It was the writing and the great characters that made this such a good series.
I wonder why it was not renewed for a second series ( season in the USA )
There was an earlier Scifi BBC series based on the Moon made in 1973 called " Moonbase 3 ".
Now process this.....The main character in Star Cops was Nathan Spring played by actor David Calder
The main character in Moonbase 3 was David Caulder played by actor Donald Houston
Coincidence....Irony....Temporal anomaly left because of time travel in the future?

    • @psammiad

Production was interrupted to a writers strike, and it was in a poor time slot, 830 on BBC2 on a week night, when people would be watching the main channels. It's dark in tone so wouldn't appeal to kids, and was on too late for them anyway. It just doesn't have the charm of other shows, so didn't get good ratings and wasn't renewed.

Thank you. Loved this when it was first transmitted and yep, even bought the boxset (remember them?). Only 2 negatives - 1) lippy ‘Pal’ Kensey annoyed - really annoyed - me as much as gobby Alan Carter in Space 1999 (only Season 1 natch - S2 being so bad I still ignore it). I’d have shot each/both of them out the nearest airlock early on 2) dreadful theme (unlike Enterprise which kinda grew on us, this one be 100% disposable). So, much like I Clavdivs - despite the cheapo rickety sets and sometimes stilted acting, it remains an enjoyable watch & isn’t that the point? Good ol’ 70s Auntie Beep - “Cheap ‘n Cheerful” [Unlike the American requirements: Space 1999 S2 - “Brash ‘n B/S”. Happy daze.

You have to admire any film or TV show whose reach exceeds its grasp. You can see the attempt of a solid hard sci-fi drama series; a realistic portrayal of near future space travel, speculative fiction of future crimes, the rise of artificial intelligence and domestic smart technology. Sure the special effects are dodgy, the sets are held together with sticky tape, the video, sound and editing quality looks cheap, and the wardrobe has dated as bad as any of the worst 80s fashion. But this could have really been something, given a better chance. A big part of its doom was the BBC (and British TV in general, for that matter) have always hated sci-fi, seeing it as "just for kids." Even Doctor Who was being slowly strangled to death at that point, and coming to the autumn of its golden age. A serious adult orientated British sci-fi drama never stood a chance. Gave a good effort though.

    • @Retroblique
      @Retroblique 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yep, and the BBC's disdain for its own production could clearly be seen in its scheduling. Star Cops was hidden away on BBC2, not a channel known for primetime drama, shown in an awkward 8:30pm - 9:20pm timeslot where it was in direct competition with BBC1's highest rated sitcom. And in the middle of summer, when TV audience were traditionally at their lowest. The BBC knew full well it would be unlikely to attract an audience and therefore they could cancel the show without anyone noticing it even existed in the first place.

BOX makes Siri seem like a precocious toddler wearing her mum's glasses and pretending to be a secretary!
The idea of BOX was brilliant! It presupposed the extent and availability of the internet, the ubiquitousness of Wi-Fi, and the reality of having a bit of AI in our pocket... a thing we all live with, today.
In fact, I liked the idea so much that I wrote a script, and shot a short film with friends in the early 90's, that featured a similar device that went a bit too far in that it independently arranged for the death of the owner's professional rival. But, no worries, it made it look like an accident. ;-]
